Cluster algebraic description of entanglement patterns for the BTZ black hole

We study the thermal state of a two dimensional conformal field theory which is dual to the static BTZ black hole in the high temperature limit. After partitioning the boundary of the static BTZ slice into $N$ subsystems we show that there is an underlying $C_{N-1}$ cluster algebra encoding entanglement patterns of the thermal state. We also demonstrate that the polytope encapsulating such patterns in a geometric manner for a fixed $N$ is the cyclohedron ${\mathcal C}_{N-1}$. Alternatively these patterns of entanglement can be represented in the space of geodesics (kinematic space) in terms of a Zamolodchikov $Y$-system of $C_{N-1}$ type. The boundary condition for such an $Y$-system is featuring the entropy of the BTZ black hole.

The associahedron as a holographic entanglement polytope

By employing the ${\rm AdS}_3/{\rm CFT}_2$ correspondence in this note we observe an analogy between the structures found in connection with the Arkani-Hamed-Bai-He-Yan (ABHY) associahedron used for understanding scattering amplitudes, and the one used for understanding space-time emerging from patterns of entanglement. The analogy suggests the natural interpretation for the associahedron as a holographic entanglement polytope associated to the ${\rm CFT}_2$ vacuum. Our observations hint at the possibility that the factorization properties of scattering amplitudes are connected to the notion of separability of space-time as used in the theory of holographic quantum entanglement.

$X$-States From a Finite Geometric Perspective

It is found that $15$ different types of two-qubit $X$-states split naturally into two sets (of cardinality $9$ and $6$) once their entanglement properties are taken into account. We {characterize both the validity and entangled nature of the $X$-states with maximally-mixed subsystems in terms of certain parameters} and show that their properties are related to a special class of geometric hyperplanes of the symplectic polar space of order two and rank two. Finally, we introduce the concept of hyperplane-states and briefly address their non-local properties.

Scanning space-time with patterns of entanglement

In the ${\rm AdS}_3/{\rm CFT}_2$ setup we elucidate how gauge invariant boundary patterns of entanglement of the CFT vacuum are encoded into the bulk via the coefficient dynamics of an $A_{N-3}$, $N\geq 4$ cluster algebra. In the static case this dynamics of encoding manifests itself in kinematic space, which is a copy of de Sitter space ${\rm dS}_2$, in a particularly instructive manner. For a choice of partition of the boundary into $N$ regions the patterns of entanglement, associated with conditional mutual informations of overlapping regions, are related to triangulations of geodesic $N$-gons. Such triangulations are then mapped to causal patterns in kinematic space. For a fixed $N$ the space of all causal patterns is related to the associahedron ${\mathcal K}^{N-3}$ an object well-known from previous studies on scattering amplitudes. On this space of causal patterns cluster dynamics acts by a recursion provided by a Zamolodchikov's $Y$-system of type $(A_{N-3},A_1)$. We observe that the space of causal patterns is equipped with a partial order, and is isomorphic to the Tamari lattice. The mutation of causal patterns can be encapsulated by a walk of $N-3$ particles interacting in a peculiar manner in the past light cone of a point of ${\rm dS}_2$.

Berry curvature, horocycles and scattering states in $AdS_3/CFT_2$

By studying the space of geodesics in $ADS_3/CFT_2$ and quantizing the geodesic motion, we relate scattering data to boundary entanglement of the CFT vacuum. The basic idea is to use a family of plane waves parametrized by coordinates of the space of geodesics i.e. kinematic space. This idea enables a simple calculation of the Berry curvature living on kinematic space. As a result we recover the Crofton form with a coefficient depending on the scattering energy. In arriving at these results the space of horocycles is used. We show that this new space used in concert with kinematic space incorporates naturally the gauge degrees of freedom responsible for an analogue of Berry's Phase. Horocycles also give a new geometric look to the strong subadditivity relation in terms of lambda lengths giving rise to shear coordinates of geodesic quadrangles. A generalization for geodesic polygons then reveals an interesting connection with $A_{n}$ cluster algebras. Here the cluster variables are the lambda lengths related to the regularized entropies of the boundary via the Ryu-Takayanagi relation. An elaboration of this idea indicates that cluster algebras might provide a natural algebraic means for encoding the gauge invariant entanglement patterns of certain boundary entangled states in the geometry of bulk geodesics. Finally using the language of integral geometry we show how certain propagators connected to the bulk, boundary and kinematic spaces are related to data of elementary scattering problems. We also present some hints how these ideas might be generalized for more general holographic scenarios.

The Coupled Cluster Method and Entanglement

The Coupled Cluster (CC) and full CI expansions are studied for three fermions with six and seven modes. Surprisingly the CC expansion is tailor made to characterize the usual SLOCC entanglement classes. It means that the notion of a SLOCC transformation shows up quite naturally as a one relating the CC and CI expansions, and going from the CI expansion to the CC one is equivalent to obtaining a form for the state where the structure of the entanglement classes is transparent. In this picture entanglement is characterized by the parameters of the cluster operators describing transitions from occupied states to singles, doubles and triples of non occupied ones. Using the CC parametrization of states in the seven mode case we give a simple formula for the unique SLOCC invariant $\mathcal{J}$. Then we consider a perturbation problem featuring a state from the unique SLOCC class characterized by $\mathcal{J}\neq 0$. For this state with entanglement generated by doubles we investigate the phenomenon of changing the entanglement type due to the perturbing effect of triples. We show that there are states with real amplitudes such that their entanglement encoded into configurations of clusters of doubles is protected from errors generated by triples. Finally we put forward a proposal to use the parameters of the cluster operator describing transitions to doubles for entanglement characterization. Compared to the usual SLOCC classes this provides a coarse grained approach to fermionic entanglement.

Classification of multipartite systems featuring only $|W\rangle$ and $|GHZ\rangle$ genuine entangled states

In this paper we present several multipartite quantum systems featuring the same type of genuine (tripartite) entanglement. Based on a geometric interpretation of the so-called $|W\rangle$ and $|GHZ\rangle$ states we show that the classification of all multipartite systems featuring those and only those two classes of genuine entanglement can be deduced from earlier work of algebraic geometers. This classification corresponds in fact to classification of fundamental subadjoint varieties and establish a connection between those systems, well known in Quantum Information Theory and fundamental simple Lie algebras.

Embedding qubits into fermionic Fock space, peculiarities of the four-qubit case

We give a fermionic Fock space description of embedded entangled qubits. Within this framework the problem of classification of pure state entanglement boils down to the problem of classifying spinors. The usual notion of separable states turns out to be just a special case of the one of pure spinors. By using the notion of single, double and mixed occupancy representation with intertwiners relating them a natural physical interpretation of embedded qubits is found. As an application of these ideas one can make a physically sound meaning of some of the direct sum structures showing up in the context of the so-called Black-Hole/Qubit Correspondence. We discuss how the usual invariants for qubits serving as measures of entanglement can be obtained from invariants for spinors in an elegant manner. In particular a detailed case study for recovering the invariants for four-qubits within a spinorial framework is presented. We also observe that reality conditions on complex spinors defining Majorana spinors for embedded qubits boil down to self conjugate states under the Wootters spin flip operation. Finally we conduct a study on the explicit structure of $Spin(16,\mathbb{C})$ invariant polynomials related to the structure of possible measures of entanglement for fermionic systems with 8 modes. Here we find an algebraically independent generating set of the generalized SLOCC invariants and calculate their restriction to the dense orbit. We point out the special role the largest exceptional group $E_8$ is playing in these considerations.

A Notable Relation between $N$-Qubit and $2^{N-1}$-Qubit Pauli Groups via Binary ${\rm LGr}(N,2N)$

Employing the fact that the geometry of the $N$-qubit ($N \geq 2$) Pauli group is embodied in the structure of the symplectic polar space $\mathcal{W}(2N-1,2)$ and using properties of the Lagrangian Grassmannian ${\rm LGr}(N,2N)$ defined over the smallest Galois field, it is demonstrated that there exists a bijection between the set of maximum sets of mutually commuting elements of the $N$-qubit Pauli group and a certain subset of elements of the $2^{N-1}$-qubit Pauli group. In order to reveal finer traits of this correspondence, the cases $N=3$ (also addressed recently by Lévay, Planat and Saniga [J. High Energy Phys. 2013 (2013), no. 9, 037, 35 pages, arXiv:1305.5689]) and $N=4$ are discussed in detail. As an apt application of our findings, we use the stratification of the ambient projective space ${\rm PG}(2^N-1,2)$ of the $2^{N-1}$-qubit Pauli group in terms of $G$-orbits, where $G \equiv {\rm SL}(2,2)\times {\rm SL}(2,2)\times\cdots\times {\rm SL}(2,2)\rtimes S_N$, to decompose $\underlineπ({\rm LGr}(N,2N))$ into non-equivalent orbits. This leads to a partition of ${\rm LGr}(N,2N)$ into distinguished classes that can be labeled by elements of the above-mentioned Pauli groups.

Coffman-Kundu-Wootters inequality for fermions

We derive an inequality for three fermions with six single particle states which reduces to the sum of the famous Coffman-Kundu-Wootters inequalities when an embedded three qubit system is considered. We identify the quantities which are playing the role of the concurrence, the three-tangle and the invariant $\det ρ_A+\det ρ_B+\det ρ_C$ for this tripartite system. We show that this latter one is almost interchangeable with the von Neumann entropy and conjecture that it measures the entanglement of one fermion with the rest of the system. We prove that the vanishing of the fermionic "concurrence" implies that the two particle reduced density matrix is a mixture of separable states. Also the vanishing of this quantitiy is only possible in the GHZ class, where some genuie tripartite entanglement is present and in the separable class. Based on this we conjecture that this "concurrence" measures the amount of entanglement between pairs of fermions. We identify the well-known "spin-flipped" density matrix in the fermionic context as the reduced density matrix of a special particle-hole dual state. We show that in general this dual state is always canonically defined by the Hermitian inner product of the fermionic Fock space and that it can be used to calculate SLOCC covariants. We show that Fierz identities known from the theory of spinors relate SLOCC covariants with reduced density matrix elements of the state and its "spin-flipped" dual.

Entanglement classification of three fermions with up to nine single-particle states

Based on results well known in the mathematics literature but have not made their debut to the physics literature yet we conduct a study on three-fermionic systems with six, seven, eight and nine single-particle states. Via introducing special polynomial invariants playing the role of entanglement measures the structure of the SLOCC entanglement classes is investigated. The SLOCC classes of the six- and seven-dimensional cases can elegantly be described by special subconfigurations of the Fano plane. Some special embedded systems containing distinguishable constituents are arising naturally in our formalism, namely, three-qubits and three-qutrits. In particular the three fundamental invariants $I_6$, $I_9$, and $I_{12}$ of the three-qutrits system are shown to arise as special cases of the four fundamental invariants of three-fermions with nine single-particle states.

Entanglement in fermionic Fock space

We propose a generalization of the usual SLOCC and LU classification of entangled pure state fermionic systems based on the Spin group. Our generalization uses the fact that there is a representation of this group acting on the fermionic Fock space which when restricted to fixed particle number subspaces recovers naturally the usual SLOCC transformations. The new ingredient is the occurrence of Bogoliubov transformations of the whole Fock space changing the particle number. The classification scheme built on the Spin group prohibits naturally entanglement between states containing even and odd number of fermions. In our scheme the problem of classification of entanglement types boils down to the classification of spinors where totally separable states are represented by so called pure spinors. We construct the basic invariants of the Spin group and show how some of the known SLOCC invariants are just their special cases. As an example we present the classification of fermionic systems with a Fock space based on six single particle states. An intriguing duality between two different possibilities for embedding three-qubit systems inside the fermionic ones is revealed. This duality is elucidated via an interesting connection to configurations of wrapped membranes reinterpreted as qubits.

'Magic' Configurations of Three-Qubit Observables and Geometric Hyperplanes of the Smallest Split Cayley Hexagon

Recently Waegell and Aravind [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 45 (2012), 405301, 13 pages] have given a number of distinct sets of three-qubit observables, each furnishing a proof of the Kochen-Specker theorem. Here it is demonstrated that two of these sets/configurations, namely the $18_{2} - 12_{3}$ and $2_{4}14_{2} - 4_{3}6_{4}$ ones, can uniquely be extended into geometric hyperplanes of the split Cayley hexagon of order two, namely into those of types ${\cal V}_{22}(37; 0, 12, 15, 10)$ and ${\cal V}_{4}(49; 0, 0, 21, 28)$ in the classification of Frohardt and Johnson [Comm. Algebra 22 (1994), 773-797]. Moreover, employing an automorphism of order seven of the hexagon, six more replicas of either of the two configurations are obtained.

Hitchin functionals are related to measures of entanglement

According to the Black Hole/Qubit Correspondence (BHQC) certain black hole entropy formulas in supergravity can be related to multipartite entanglement measures of quantum information. Here we show that the origin of this correspondence is a connection between Hitchin functionals used as action functionals for form theories of gravity related to topological strings, and entanglement measures for systems with a small number of constituents. The basic idea acting as a unifying agent in these seemingly unrelated fields is stability connected to the mathematical notion of special prehomogeneous vector spaces associated to Freudenthal systems coming from simple Jordan algebras. It is shown that the nonlinear function featuring these functionals and defining Calabi-Yau and generalized Calabi-Yau structures is the Freudenthal dual a concept introduced recently in connection with the BHQC. We propose to use the Hitchin invariant for three-forms in 7 dimensions as an entanglement measure playing a basic role in classifying three-fermion systems with seven modes. The representative of the class of maximal tripartite entanglement is the three-form used as a calibration for compactification on manifolds with $G_2$ holonomy. The idea that entanglement measures are related to action functionals from which the usual correspondence of the BHQC follows at the tree level suggests that one can use the BHQC in a more general context.

Qubits from extra dimensions

We link the recently discovered black hole-qubit correspondence to the structure of extra dimensions. In particular we show that for toroidal compactifications of type IIB string theory simple qubit systems arise naturally from the geometrical data of the tori parametrized by the moduli. We also generalize the recently suggested idea of the attractor mechanism as a distillation procedure of GHZ-like entangled states on the event horizon, to moduli stabilization for flux attractors in F-theory compactifications on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau four-folds. Finally using a simple example we show that the natural arena for qubits to show up is an embedded one within the realm of fermionic entanglement of quantum systems with indistinguishable constituents.

Two-Center Black Holes, Qubits and Elliptic Curves

We relate the U-duality invariants characterizing two-center extremal black hole solutions in the stu, st^2 and t^3 models of N=2, d=4 supergravity to the basic invariants used to characterize entanglement classes of four-qubit systems. For the elementary example of a D0D4-D2D6 composite in the t^3 model we illustrate how these entanglement invariants are related to some of the physical properties of the two-center solution. Next we show that it is possible to associate elliptic curves to charge configurations of two-center composites. The hyperdeterminant of the hypercube, a four-qubit polynomial invariant of order 24 with 2894276 terms, is featuring the j invariant of the elliptic curve. We present some evidence that this quantity and its straightforward generalization should play an important role in the physics of two-center solutions.

STU attractors from vanishing concurrence

Concurrence is an entanglement measure characterizing the {\it mixed} state bipartite correlations inside of a pure state of an $n$-qubit system. We show that after organizing the charges and the moduli in the STU model of $N=2$, $d=4$ supergravity to a three-qubit state, for static extremal spherically symmetric BPS black hole solutions the vanishing condition for all of the bipartite concurrences on the horizon is equivalent to the attractor equations. As a result of this the macroscopic black hole entropy given by the three-tangle can be reinterpreted as a linear entropy characterizing the {\it pure} state entanglement for an arbitrary bipartite split. Both for the BPS and non-BPS cases explicit expressions for the concurrences are obtained, with their vanishing on the horizon is demonstrated.

STU Black Holes as Four Qubit Systems

In this paper we describe the structure of extremal stationary spherically symmetric black hole solutions in the STU model of D=4, N=2 supergravity in terms of four-qubit systems. Our analysis extends the results of previous investigations based on three qubits. The basic idea facilitating this four-qubit interpretation is the fact that stationary solutions in D=4 supergravity can be described by dimensional reduction along the time direction. In this D=3 picture the global symmetry group $SL(2,R)^{\times 3}$ of the model is extended by the Ehlers SL(2,R) accounting for the fourth qubit. We introduce a four qubit state depending on the charges (electric, magnetic and NUT) the moduli and the warp factor. We relate the entanglement properties of this state to different classes of black hole solutions in the STU model. In the terminology of four qubit entanglement extremal black hole solutions correspond to nilpotent, and nonextremal ones to semisimple states. In arriving at this entanglement based scenario the role of the four algebraically independent four qubit SL(2,C) invariants is emphasized.

The attractor mechanism as a distillation procedure

In a recent paper it has been shown that for double extremal static spherically symmetric BPS black hole solutions in the STU model the well-known process of moduli stabilization at the horizon can be recast in a form of a distillation procedure of a three-qubit entangled state of GHZ-type. By studying the full flow in moduli space in this paper we investigate this distillation procedure in more detail. We introduce a three-qubit state with amplitudes depending on the conserved charges the warp factor, and the moduli. We show that for the recently discovered non-BPS solutions it is possible to see how the distillation procedure unfolds itself as we approach the horizon. For the non-BPS seed solutions at the asymptotically Minkowski region we are starting with a three-qubit state having seven nonequal nonvanishing amplitudes and finally at the horizon we get a GHZ state with merely four nonvanishing ones with equal magnitudes. The magnitude of the surviving nonvanishing amplitudes is proportional to the macroscopic black hole entropy. A systematic study of such attractor states shows that their properties reflect the structure of the fake superpotential. We also demonstrate that when starting with the very special values for the moduli corresponding to flat directions the uniform structure at the horizon deteriorates due to errors generalizing the usual bit flips acting on the qubits of the attractor states.

The Veldkamp space of multiple qubits

We introduce a point-line incidence geometry in which the commutation relations of the real Pauli group of multiple qubits are fully encoded. Its points are pairs of Pauli operators differing in sign and each line contains three pairwise commuting operators any of which is the product of the other two (up to sign). We study the properties of its Veldkamp space enabling us to identify subsets of operators which are distinguished from the geometric point of view. These are geometric hyperplanes and pairwise intersections thereof. Among the geometric hyperplanes one can find the set of self-dual operators with respect to the Wootters spin-flip operation well-known from studies concerning multiqubit entanglement measures. In the two- and three-qubit cases a class of hyperplanes gives rise to Mermin squares and other generalized quadrangles. In the three-qubit case the hyperplane with points corresponding to the 27 Wootters self-dual operators is just the underlying geometry of the E6(6) symmetric entropy formula describing black holes and strings in five dimensions.

Special entangled quantum systems and the Freudenthal construction

We consider special quantum systems containing both distinguishable and identical constituents. It is shown that for these systems the Freudenthal construction based on cubic Jordan algebras naturally defines entanglement measures invariant under the group of stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC). For this type of multipartite entanglement the SLOCC classes can be explicitly given. These results enable further explicit constructions of multiqubit entanglement measures for distinguishable constituents by embedding them into identical fermionic ones. We also prove that the Plucker relations for the embedding system provide a sufficient and necessary condition for the separability of the embedded one. We argue that this embedding procedure can be regarded as a convenient representation for quantum systems of particles which are really indistinguishable but for some reason they are not in the same state of some inner degree of freedom.

A study of two-qubit density matrices with fermionic purifications

We study 12 parameter families of two qubit density matrices, arising from a special class of two-fermion systems with four single particle states or alternatively from a four-qubit state with amplitudes arranged in an antisymmetric matrix. We calculate the Wooters concurrences and the negativities in a closed form and study their behavior. We use these results to show that the relevant entanglement measures satisfy the generalized Coffman-Kundu-Wootters formula of distributed entanglement. An explicit formula for the residual tangle is also given. The geometry of such density matrices is elaborated in some detail. In particular an explicit form for the Bures metric is given.
