Hölder continuity of $ω$-minimizers of functionals with generalized Orlicz growth

We show local Hölder continuity of quasiminimizers of functionals with non-standard (Musielak--Orlicz) growth. Compared with previous results, we cover more general minimizing functionals and need fewer assumptions. We prove Harnack's inequality and a Morrey type estimate for quasiminimizers. Combining this with Ekeland's variational principle, we obtain local Hölder continuity for $ω$-minimizers.

Riesz spaces with generalized Orlicz growth

We consider a Riesz $ϕ$-variation for functions $f$ defined on the real line when $φ:Ω\times[0,\infty)\to[0,\infty)$ is a generalized $Φ$-function. We show that it generates a quasi-Banach space and derive an explicit formula for the modular when the function $f$ has bounded variation. The resulting $BV$-type energy has previously appeared in image restoration models. We generalize and improve previous results in the variable exponent and Orlicz cases and answer a question regarding the Riesz--Medvedev variation by Appell, Banaś and Merentes [\emph{Bounded Variation and Around}, Studies in Nonlinear Analysis and Applications, Vol. 17, De Gruyter, Berlin/Boston, 2014].

A proof of Hall's conjecture on length of ray images under starlike mappings of order $α$

Assume that $f$ lies in the class of starlike functions of order $α\in [0,1)$, that is, which are regular and univalent for $|z|<1$ and such that $${\rm Re} \left (\frac{zf'(z)}{f(z)} \right ) > α~\mbox{ for } |z|<1. $$ In this paper we show that for each $α\in [0,1)$, the following sharp inequality holds: $$ |f(re^{iθ})|^{-1} \int_{0}^{r}|f'(ue^{iθ})| du \leq \frac{Γ(\frac12)Γ(2-α)}{Γ(\frac32-α)} ~\mbox {for every $r<1$ and $θ$}. $$ This settles the conjecture of Hall (1980).

Maximal regularity for local minimizers of non-autonomous functionals

We establish local $C^{1,α}$-regularity for some $α\in(0,1)$ and $C^α$-regularity for any $α\in(0,1)$ of local minimizers of the functional \[ v\ \mapsto\ \int_Ωϕ(x,|Dv|)\,dx, \] where $ϕ$ satisfies a $(p,q)$-growth condition. Establishing such a regularity theory with sharp, general conditions has been an open problem since the 1980s. In contrast to previous results, we formulate the continuity requirement on $ϕ$ in terms of a single condition for the map $(x,t)\mapsto ϕ(x,t)$, rather than separately in the $x$- and $t$-directions. Thus we can obtain regularity results for functionals without assuming that the gap $\frac qp$ between the upper and lower growth bounds is close to $1$. Moreover, for $ϕ(x,t)$ with particular structure, including $p$-, Orlicz-, $p(x)$- and double phase-growth, our single condition implies known, essentially optimal, regularity conditions. Hence, we handle regularity theory for the above functional in a universal way.

Characterization of generalized Orlicz spaces

The norm in classical Sobolev spaces can be expressed as a difference quotient. This expression can be used to generalize the space to the fractional smoothness case. Because the difference quotient is based on shifting the function, it cannot be used in generalized Orlicz spaces. In its place, we introduce a smoothed difference quotient and show that it can be used to characterize the generalized Orlicz-Sobolev space. Our results are new even in Orlicz spaces and variable exponent spaces.
