Local eigenvalue statistics for higher-rank Anderson models after Dietlein-Elgart

We use the method of eigenvalue level spacing developed by Dietlein and Elgart (arXiv:1712.03925) to prove that the local eigenvalue statistics (LES) for the Anderson model on $Z^d$, with uniform higher-rank $m \geq 2$, single-site perturbations, is given by a Poisson point process with intensity measure $n(E_0)~ds$, where $n(E_0)$ is the density of states at energy $E_0$ in the region of localization near the spectral band edges. This improves the result of Hislop and Krishna (arXiv:1809.01236), who proved that the LES is a compound Poisson process with Lévy measure supported on the set $\{1, 2, \ldots, m \}$. Our proofs are an application of the ideas of Dieltein and Elgart to these higher-rank lattice models with two spectral band edges, and illustrate, in a simpler setting, the key steps of the proof of Dieltein and Elgart.

On the local eigenvalue statistics for random band matrices in the localization regime

We study the local eigenvalue statistics $ξ_{ω,E}^N$ associated with the eigenvalues of one-dimensional, $(2N+1) \times (2N+1)$ random band matrices with independent, identically distributed, real random variables and band width growing as $N^α$, for $0 < α< \frac{1}{2}$. We consider the limit points associated with the random variables $ξ_{ω,E}^N [I]$, for $I \subset \mathbb{R}$, and $E \in (-2,2)$. For Gaussian distributed random variables with $0 \leq α< \frac{1}{7}$, we prove that this family of random variables has nontrivial limit points for almost every $E \in (-2,2)$, and that these limit points are Poisson distributed with positive intensities. The proof is based on an analysis of the characteristic functions of the random variables $ξ_{ω,E}^N [I]$ and associated quantities related to the intensities, as $N$ tends towards infinity, and employs known localization bounds of \cite{schenker, peled, et. al.}, and the strong Wegner and Minami estimates \cite{peled, et. al.}. Our more general result applies to random band matrices with random variables having absolutely continuous distributions with bounded densities. Under the hypothesis that the localization bounds hold for $0 < α< \frac{1}{2}$, we prove that any nontrivial limit points of the random variables $ξ_{ω,E}^N [I]$ are distributed according to Poisson distributions.

The density of states and local eigenvalue statistics for random band matrices of fixed width

We prove that the local eigenvalue statistics for $d=1$ random band matrices with fixed bandwidth and, for example, Gaussian entries, is given by a Poisson point process and we identify the intensity of the process. The proof relies on an extension of the localization bounds of Schenker \cite{schenker} and the Wegner and Minami estimates. These two estimates are proved using averaging over the diagonal disorder. The new component is a proof of the uniform convergence and the smoothness of the density of states function. The limit function, known to be the semicircle law with a band-width dependent error \cite{bmp,dps,dl,mpk}, is identified as the intensity of the limiting Poisson point process. The proof of these results for the density of states relies on a new result that simplifies and extends some of the ideas used by Dolai, Krishna, and Mallick \cite{dkm}. These authors proved regularity properties of the density of states for random Schrödinger operators (lattice and continuum) in the localization regime. The proof presented here applies to the random Schrödinger operators on a class of infinite graphs treated by in \cite{dkm} and extends the results of \cite{dkm} to probability measures with unbounded support. The method also applies to fixed bandwidth RBM for $d=2,3$ provided certain localization bounds are known.

Band functions in the presence of magnetic steps

We complete the analysis of the band functions for two-dimensional magnetic Schrödinger operators with piecewise constant magnetic fields. The discontinuity of the magnetic field can create edge currents that ow along the discontinuity that have been described by physicists. Properties of these edge currents are directly related to the behavior of the band functions. The effective potential of the fiber operator is an asymmetric double well (eventually degenerated) and the analysis of the splitting of the bands incorporates the asymmetry. If the magnetic field vanishes, the reduced operator has essential spectrum and we provide an explicit description of the band functions located below the essential spectrum. For non degenerate magnetic steps, we provide an asymptotic expansion of the band functions at infinity. We prove that when the ratio of the two magnetic fields is rational, a splitting of the band functions occurs and has a natural order, predicted by numerical computations.

Decorrelation estimates for random Schrödinger operators with non rank one perturbations

We prove decorrelation estimates for generalized lattice Anderson models on $Z^d$ constructed with finite-rank perturbations in the spirit of Klopp \cite{klopp}. These are applied to prove that the local eigenvalue statistics $ξ^ω_{E}$ and $ξ^ω_{E^\prime}$, associated with two energies $E$ and $E'$ satisfying $|E - E'| > 4d$, are independent. That is, if $I,J$ are two bounded intervals, the random variables $ξ^ω_{E}(I)$ and $ξ^ω_{E'}(J)$, are independent and distributed according to a compound Poisson distribution whose Lévy measure has finite support. We also prove that the extended Minami estimate implies that the eigenvalues in the localization region have multiplicity at most the rank of the perturbation.

The multiplicity of eigenvalues of the Hodge Laplacian on 5-dimensional compact manifolds

We study multiplicity of the eigenvalues of the Hodge Laplacian on smooth, compact Riemannian manifolds of dimension five for generic families of metrics. We prove that generically the Hodge Laplacian, restricted to the subspace of co-exact two-forms, has nonzero eigenvalues of multiplicity two. The proof is based on the fact that Hodge Laplacian restricted to the subspace of co-exact two-forms is minus the square of the Beltrami operator, a first-order operator. We prove that for generic metrics the spectrum of the Beltrami operator is simple. Because the Beltrami operator in this setting is a skew-adjoint operator, this implies the main result for the Hodge Laplacian.

Characterization of bulk states in one-edge quantum Hall systems

We study magnetic quantum Hall systems in a half-plane with Dirichlet boundary conditions along the edge. Much work has been done on the analysis of the currents associated with states whose energy is located between Landau levels. These edge states are localized near the boundary and they carry a non-zero current. In this article, we study the behavior of states with energy close to a Landau level that are referred to as bulk states in the physics literature. The magnetic Schrödinger operator is invariant with respect to translations in the direction of the edge and is a direct integral of operators indexed by a real wave number. We analyse the fiber operators and prove new asymptotics on the band functions and their first derivative as the wave number goes to infinity. We apply these results to prove that the current carried by a bulk state is small compared to the current carried by an edge state. We also prove that the bulk states are exponentially small near the edge.

Eigenvalue statistics for random Schrodinger operators with non rank one perturbations

We prove that certain natural random variables associated with the local eigenvalue statistics for generalized lattice Anderson models constructed with finite-rank perturbations are compound Poisson distributed. This distribution is characterized by the fact that the Levy measure is supported on at most a finite set determined by the rank. The proof relies on a Minami-type estimate for finite-rank perturbations. For Anderson-type continuum models on $\R^d$, we prove a similar result for certain natural random variables associated with the local eigenvalue statistics. We prove that the compound Poisson distribution associated with these random variables has a Levy measure whose support is at most the set of positive integers.

Edge currents and eigenvalue estimates for magnetic barrier Schrödinger operators

We study two-dimensional magnetic Schrödinger operators with a magnetic field that is equal to b>0 for x > 0 and (-b) for x < 0. This magnetic Schrödinger operator exhibits a magnetic barrier at x=0. The unperturbed system is invariant with respect to translations in the y-direction. As a result, the Schrödinger operator admits a direct integral decomposition. We analyze the band functions of the fiber operators as functions of the wave number and establish their asymptotic behavior. Because the fiber operators are reflection symmetric, the band functions may be classified as odd or even. The odd band functions have a unique absolute minimum. We calculate the effective mass at the minimum and prove that it is positive. The even band functions are monotone decreasing. We prove that the eigenvalues of an Airy operator, respectively, harmonic oscillator operator, describe the asymptotic behavior of the band functions for large negative, respectively positive, wave numbers. We prove a Mourre estimate for perturbations of the magnetic Schrödinger operator and establish the existence of absolutely continuous spectrum in certain energy intervals. We prove lower bounds on magnetic edge currents for states with energies in the same intervals. We also prove that these lower bounds imply stable lower bounds for the asymptotic currents. We study the perturbation by slowly decaying negative potentials and establish the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalue counting function for the infinitely-many eigenvalues below the bottom of the essential spectrum.

Edge states induced by Iwatsuka Hamiltonians with positive magnetic fields

We study purely magnetic Schrödinger operators in two-dimensions $(x,y)$ with magnetic fields $b(x)$ that depend only on the $x$-coordinate. The magnetic field $b(x)$ is assumed to be bounded, there are constants $0 < b_- < b_+ < \infty$ so that $b_- \leq b(x) \leq b_+$, and outside of a strip of small width $-ε< x < ε$, where $0 < ε< b_-^{-1/2}$, we have $b(x) = b_\pm x$ for $\pm x > ε$. The case of a jump in the magnetic field at $x=0$ corresponding to $ε=0$ is also studied. We prove that the magnetic field creates an effective barrier near $x=0$ that causes edge currents to flow along it consistent with the classical interpretation. We prove lower bounds on edge currents carried by states with energy localized inside the energy bands of the Hamiltonian. We prove that these edge current-carrying states are well-localized in $x$ to a region of size $b_-^{-1/2}$, also consistent with the classical interpretation. We demonstrate that the edge currents are stable with respect to various magnetic and electric perturbations. For a family of perturbations compactly supported in the $y$-direction, we prove that the time asymptotic current exists and satisfies the same lower bound.

Optimal Wegner estimate and the density of states for N-body, interacting Schrodinger operators with random potentials

We prove an optimal one-volume Wegner estimate for interacting systems of $N$ quantum particles moving in the presence of random potentials. The proof is based on the scale-free unique continuation principle recently developed for the 1-body problem by Rojas-Molina and Veselic \cite{RM-V1} and extended to spectral projectors by Klein \cite{klein1}. These results extend of our previous results in \cite{CHK:2003,CHK:2007}. We also prove a two-volume Wegner estimate as introduced in \cite{chulaevsky-suhov1}. The random potentials are generalized Anderson-type potentials in each variable with minimal conditions on the single-site potential aside from positivity. Under additional conditions, we prove the Lipschitz continuity of the integrated density of states (IDS) This implies the existence and local finiteness of the density of states. We also apply these techniques to interacting $N$-particle Schrödinger operators with Delone-Anderson type random external potentials.

Semiclassical Szego limit of resonance clusters for the hydrogen atom Stark Hamiltonian

We study the weighted averages of resonance clusters for the hydrogen atom with a Stark electric field in the weak field limit. We prove a semiclassical Szego-type theorem for resonance clusters showing that the limiting distribution of the resonance shifts concentrates on the classical energy surface corresponding to a rescaled eigenvalue of the hydrogen atom Hamiltonian. This result extends Szego-type results on eigenvalue clusters to resonance clusters. There are two new features in this work: first, the study of resonance clusters requires the use of non self-adjoint operators, and second, the Stark perturbation is unbounded so control of the perturbation is achieved using localization properties of coherent states corresponding to hydrogen atom eigenvalues.

The spectral shift function for compactly supported perturbations of Schrödinger operators on large bounded domains

We study the asymptotic behavior as L \to \infty of the finite-volume spectral shift function for a positive, compactly-supported perturbation of a Schrödinger operator in d-dimensional Euclidean space, restricted to a cube of side length L with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The size of the support of the perturbation is fixed and independent of L. We prove that the Cesàro mean of finite-volume spectral shift functions remains pointwise bounded along certain sequences L_n \to \infty for Lebesgue-almost every energy. In deriving this result, we give a short proof of the vague convergence of the finite-volume spectral shift functions to the infinite-volume spectral shift function as L \to\infty . Our findings complement earlier results of W. Kirsch [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 101, 509 - 512 (1987), Int. Eqns. Op. Th. 12, 383 - 391 (1989)] who gave examples of positive, compactly-supported perturbations of finite-volume Dirichlet Laplacians for which the pointwise limit of the spectral shift function does not exist for any given positive energy. Our methods also provide a new proof of the Birman--Solomyak formula for the spectral shift function that may be used to express the measure given by the infinite-volume spectral shift function directly in terms of the potential.

Uniform convergence of spectral shift functions

The spectral shift function ξ_{L}(E) for a Schrödinger operator restricted to a finite cube of length L in multi-dimensional Euclidean space, with Dirichlet boundary conditions, counts the number of eigenvalues less than or equal to E \in \RR created by a perturbation potential V. We study the behavior of this function ξ_{L}(E) as L to infinity for the case of a compactly-supported and bounded potential V. After reviewing results of Kirsch [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 101, 509-512 (1987)], and our recent pointwise convergence result for the Cesàro mean [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 138, 2141-2150 (2010)], we present a new result on the convergence of the energy-averaged spectral shift function that is uniform with respect to the location of the potential V within the finite box.

A lower bound for the density of states of the lattice Anderson model

We consider the Anderson model on the multi-dimensional cubic lattice and prove a positive lower bound on the density of states under certain conditions. For example, if the random variables are independently and identically distributed and the probability measure has a bounded Lebesgue density with compact support, and if this density is essentially bounded away from zero on its support, then we prove that the density of states is strictly positive for Lebesgue-almost every energy in the deterministic spectrum.
