$\textit{Ab initio}$ electronic factors of the $A$ and $B$ hyperfine structure constants for the $5s^25p6s \; ^{1,3}\! P^{\rm o}_{1}$ states in Sn I

Large-scale $\textit{ab initio}$ calculations of the electric field gradient, which constitutes the electronic contribution to the electric quadrupole hyperfine constant $B$, were performed for the $5s^25p6s$ $^{1,3}\!P^{\rm o}_1$ excited states of tin, using three independent computational strategies of the variational multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method and a fourth approach based on the configuration interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm theory. For the $5s^25p6s$ $^{1}\!P^{\rm o}_1$ state, the final value of $B/Q =703(50)$ MHz/b differs by $0.4\%$ from the one recently used by Yordanov ${\it et~al.}$ [Communications Physics ${\bf 3}$, 107 (2020)] to extract the nuclear quadrupole moments, $Q$, for tin isotopes in the range $^{(117-131)}$Sn from collinear laser spectroscopy measurements. Efforts were made to provide a realistic theoretical uncertainty for the final $B/Q$ value of the $5s^25p6s\,^{1}\!P^{\rm o}_1$ state based on statistical principles and on correlation with the magnetic dipole hyperfine constant $A$.

Benchmarking calculations with spectroscopic accuracy of excitation energies and wavelengths in sulfur-like tungsten

Atomic properties of S-like W are evaluated through a state-of-the-art method, namely, the multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) method combined with the relativistic configuration interaction (RCI) approach. The level energies, wavelengths, and transition parameters involving the 88 lowest levels of W$^{+58}$ (W LIX) are calculated. We discuss in detail the relative importance of the valence- and core-valence electron correlation effects, the Breit interaction, the higher order retardation correction beyond the Breit interaction through the transverse photon interaction, and the quantum electrodynamical (QED) corrections. The present level energies are highly accurate, with uncertainties close to what can be achieved from spectroscopy. As such, they provide benchmark tests for other theoretical calculations of S-like W and should assist the spectroscopists in their assignment/identification of observed lines in complex spectra.

Energy level structure and transition data of Er$^{2+}$

The main aim of this paper is to present accurate energy levels of the ground [Xe]$4f^{12}$ and first excited [Xe]$4f^{11}5d$ configurations of Er$^{2+}$. The energy level structure of the Er$^{2+}$ ion was computed using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock and relativistic configuration interaction (RCI) methods, as implemented in the GRASP2018 program package. The Breit interaction, self-energy and vacuum polarization corrections were included in the RCI computations. The zero-first-order approach was used in the computations. Energy levels with the identification in $LS$ coupling for all (399) states belonging to the [Xe]$4f^{12}$ and [Xe]$4f^{11}5d$ configurations are presented. Electric dipole (E1) transition data between the levels of these two configurations are computed. The accuracy of the these data are evaluated by studying the behaviour of the transition rates as functions of the gauge parameter as well as by evaluating the cancellation factors. The core electron correlations were studied using different strategies. Root-mean-square deviations obtained in this study for states of the ground and excited configurations from the available experimental or semi-empirical data are 649 cm$^{-1}$, and 747 cm$^{-1}$, respectively.

Natural orbitals in multiconfiguration calculations of hyperfine structure parameters

We are reinvestigating the hyperfine structure of sodium using a fully relativistic multiconfiguration approach. In the fully relativistic approach, the computational strategy somewhat differs from the original nonrelativistic counterpart used in Jönsson et al. (Phys. Rev. A 53 (1996) 4021). Numerical instabilities force us to use a layer-by-layer approach that has some broad unexpected effects. Core correlation is found to be significant and therefore requires to be described in an adequate orbital basis. The natural-orbital basis provides an interesting alternative to the orbital basis from the layer-by-layer approach, allowing us to overcome some deficits of the latter, giving rise to magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constant values in excellent agreement with observations. Effort is made to assess the reliability of the natural-orbital bases and to illustrate their efficiency.

Core correlation effects in multiconfiguration calculations of isotope shifts in Mg I

The present work reports results from systematic multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations of isotope shifts for several well-known transitions in neutral magnesium. Relativistic normal and specific mass shift factors as well as the electronic probability density at the origin are calculated. Combining these electronic quantities with available nuclear data, energy and transition level shifts are determined for the $^{26}$Mg$-^{24}$Mg pair of isotopes. Different models for electron correlation are adopted. It is shown that although valence and core-valence models provide accurate values for the isotope shifts, the inclusion of core-core excitations in the computational strategy significantly improves the accuracy of the transition energies and normal mass shift factors.

Electric dipole moments of superheavy elements - A case study on copernicium

The multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) method was employed to calculate atomic electric dipole moments (EDM) of the superheavy element copernicium (Cn, $Z=112$). The EDM enhancement factors of Cn, here calculated for the first time, are about one order of magnitude larger than those of Hg. The exponential dependence of enhancement factors on atomic number $Z$ along group 12 of the periodic table was derived from the EDMs of the entire homolog series, $^{69}_{30}$Zn, $^{111}_{\phantom{1}48}$Cd, $^{199}_{\phantom{1}80}$Hg, $^{285}_{112}$Cn, and $^{482}_{162}$Uhb. These results show that superheavy elements with sufficiently large half-lives are good candidates for EDM searches.

Extended relativistic configuration interaction and many-body perturbation calculations of spectroscopic data for the $n \leq 6$ configurationsin ne-like ions between Cr XV and Kr XXVII

Level energies, wavelengths, electric dipole, magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole, and magnetic quadrupole transition rates, oscillator strengths, and line strengths from combined relativistic configuration interaction and many-body perturbation calculations are reported for the 201 fine-structure states of the $2s^2 2p^6$, $2s^2 2p^5 3l$, $2s 2p^6 3l$, $2s^2 2p^5 4l$, $2s 2p^6 4l$, $2s^2 2p^5 5l$, and $2s^2 2p^5 6l$ configurations in all Ne-like ions between Cr XV and Kr XXVII. Calculated level energies and transition data are compared with experiments from the NIST and CHIANTI databases, and other recent benchmark calculations. The mean energy difference with the NIST experiments is only 0.05%. The present calculations significantly increase the amount of accurate spectroscopic data for the $n >3$ states in a number of Ne-like ions of astrophysics interest. A complete dataset should be helpful in analyzing new observations from the solar and other astrophysical sources, and is also likely to be useful for modeling and diagnosing a variety of plasmas including astronomical and fusion plasma.

Multiconfiguration calculations of electronic isotope shift factors in Al I

The present work reports results from systematic multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations of electronic isotope shift factors for a set of transitions between low-lying states in neutral aluminium. These electronic quantities together with observed isotope shifts between different pairs of isotopes provide the changes in mean-square charge radii of the atomic nuclei. Two computational approaches are adopted for the estimation of the mass- and field shift factors. Within these approaches, different models for electron correlation are explored in a systematic way to determine a reliable computational strategy and estimate theoretical error bars of the isotope shift factors.

A Novel Method to Determine Magnetic Fields in low-density Plasma e.g. Solar Flares Facilitated Through Accidental Degeneracy of Quantum States in Fe$^{9+}$

We propose a new method to determine magnetic fields, by using the magnetic-field induced electric dipole transition $3p^43d\,^4\mathrm{D}_{7/2}$ $\rightarrow$ $3p^5\, ^2\mathrm{P}_{3/2}$ in Fe$^{9+}$ ions. This ion has a high abundance in astrophysical plasma and is therefore well-suited for direct measurements of even rather weak fields in e.g. solar flares. This transition is induced by an external magnetic field and its rate is proportional to the square of the magnetic field strength. We present theoretical values for what we will label the reduced rate and propose that the critical energy difference between the upper level in this transition and the close to degenerate $3p^43d\, ^4\mathrm{D}_{5/2}$ should be measured experimentally since it is required to determine the relative intensity of this magnetic line for different magnetic fields.

Hyperfine dependent $gf$-values of Mn I lines in the 1.49 $-$ 1.80 $μ$m H-band

The three Mn I lines at 17325, 17339 and 17349 Å~are among the 25 strongest lines ($\log(gf)>0.5$) in the H-band. They are all heavily broadened due to hyperfine structure and the profiles of these lines have so far not been understood. Earlier studies of these lines even suggested that they were blended. In this work, the profiles of these three infra-red (IR) lines have been studied theoretically and compared to experimental spectra to assist in the complete understanding of the solar spectrum in the IR. It is shown that the structure of these lines can not be described in the conventional way by the diagonal $A$ and $B$ hyperfine interaction constants. The off-diagonal hyperfine interaction not only has large impact on the energies of the hyperfine levels, but also introduces a large intensity redistribution among the hyperfine lines, changing the line profiles dramatically. By performing large-scale calculations of the diagonal and off-diagonal hyperfine interaction and $gf$-values between the upper and lower hyperfine levels and using a semi-empirical fitting procedure, agreement between our synthetic and experimental spectra was achieved. Furthermore, we compare our results with observations of stellar spectra. The spectra of the Sun and the K1.5 III red giant star Arcturus were modelled in the relevant region, $1.73-1.74$ $μ$m using our theoretically predicted $gf$-values and energies for each individual hyperfine line. Satisfactory fits were obtained and clear improvements were found using our new data compared with the old available Mn I data. A complete list of energies and $gf$-values for all the $3d^54s({^7S})4d$ e$^{6}$D $-$ $3d^54s({^7S})4f$ w$^{6}$F hyperfine lines are available as supplementary material online, whereas only the stronger lines are presented and discussed in detail in this paper.

Magnetic-field-dependent angular distributions and linear polarizations of emissions from the $2p^53s~^3P_2$ state in Ne-like ions

We studied the effect of an external magnetic field on the angular distributions and the linear polarizations of emissions from the $2s^22p^53s~^3P^o_2$ state in Ne-like ions. Since a B-dependent E1 decay channel is opened by the magnetic field and competes with the inherent M2 transition, the angular distributions and the linear polarizations strongly depend on the magnetic field strength (B). As an example, we illustrated the effect in Ne-like Mg. The B-dependent angular distributions and linear polarization degrees can also be considered as a tool for diagnostics of the magnetic field in plasmas.

Measurement of the Kr XVIII 3d $^2D_{5/2}$ lifetime at low energy in a unitary Penning trap

A different technique is used to study the radiative decay of a metastable state in multiply ionized atoms. With use of a unitary Penning trap to selectively capture Kr$^{17+}$ ions from an ion source at NIST, the decay of the 3d $^2D_{5/2}$ metastable state is measured in isolation at low energy, without any active cooling. The highly ionized atoms are trapped in the fine structure of the electronic ground configuration with an energy spread of 4(1) eV, which is narrower than within the ion source by a factor of about 100. By observing the visible 637 nm photon emission of the forbidden transition from the 3d $^2D_{5/2}$ level to the ground state, we measured its radiative lifetime to be $τ=$ 24.48 ms +/- 0.28(stat.) ms +/- 0.14(syst.) ms. Remarkably, various theoretical predictions for this relativistic Rydberg atom are in agreement with our measurement at the 1% level.

The effect of an external magnetic field on the determination of E1M1 two-photon decay rates in Be-like ions

In this work we report on ab initio theoretical results for the magnetic field induced 2s2p ^3P_0 - 2s^2 ^1S_0 E1 transition for ions in the beryllium isoelectronic sequence between Z=5 and 92. It has been proposed that the rate of the E1M1 two-photon transition 2s2p ^3P_0 - 2s^2 ^1S_0 can be extracted from the lifetime of the ^3P_0 state in Be-like ions with zero nuclear spin by employing resonant recombination in a storage-ring. This experimental approach involves a perturbing external magnetic field. The effect of this field needs to be evaluated in order to properly extract the two-photon rate from the measured decay curves. The magnetic field induced transition rates are carefully evaluated and it is shown that, with a typical storage-ring field strength, it is dominant or of the same order as the E1M1 rate for low- and mid-Z ions. Results for several field strengths and ions are presented and we also give a simple Z-dependent formula for the rate. We estimate the uncertainties of our model to be within 5% for low- and mid-Z ions, and slightly larger for more highly charged ions. Furthermore we evaluate the importance of including both perturber states, ^3P_1 and ^1P_1, and it is shown that excluding the influence of the ^1P_1 perturber overestimates the rate by up to 26% for the mid-Z ions.

Theoretical investigations on magnetic field induced $2p^53s^3P_{0,2} - 2p^6^1S_0$ transitions in Ne-like ions without nuclear spin

We report theoretical results for magnetic field induced $2p^53s^3P_{0,2} - 2p^6^1S_0$ E1 transitions in Ne-like ions with zero nuclear spin (I=0) between Mg III and Zn XXI as well as in Ne I. We demonstrate that it is important to include both ``perturber'' states $2p^53s^1P_1$ and $2p^53s^3P_1$ in order to produce reliable transition rates. Furthermore, we investigate the trends of the rates along the isoelectronic sequence of the $2p^53s^3P_{0,2} - 2p^6^1S_0$ transitions and their competition with the $2p^53s^3P_0 - 2p^53s^3P_1$ M1 and the $2p^53s^3P_2 - 2p^6^1S_0$ M2 decays. For the $2p^53s^3P_0$ state the magnetic field induced transition becomes the dominant decay channel for the light elements even in a relatively weak magnetic field, and it will therefore prove useful in diagnostics of the strength of magnetic fields in different plasmas. The influence of an external magnetic field on the lifetime of the $2p^53s^3P_2$ state is much smaller but still observable for the ions near the neutral end of the sequence. As a special case, the magnetic field effect on the lifetimes of $2p^53s^3P_{0,2}$ states of neutral $^{20}$Ne is discussed. It is found that the lifetimes are drastically reduced by a magnetic field, which may be an underlying reason for the discrepancies in the lifetime of the $2p^53s^3P_2$ state between experiment (14.73(14) s) and theory (17.63 s).

Toward Calculations with Spectroscopic Accuracy: the 2s2.2p 2Po_{3/2} - 2s2p2 4P_{5/2} Excitation Energy in Boron

No lines have been observed for transitions between the doublet and quartet levels of B I. Consequently, energy levels based on observation for the latter are obtained through extrapolation of wavelengths along the iso-electronic sequence for the 2s2.2p 2Po_{3/2} - 2s2p2 4P_{5/2} transition. In this paper, accurate theoretical excitation energies from a newly developed partitioned correlation function interaction (PCFI) method are reported for B I that include both relativistic effects in the Breit-Pauli approximation and a finite mass correction. Results are compared with extrapolated values from observed data. For B I our estimate of the excitation energy, 28959 +/- 5 cm^{-1}, is in better agreement with the values obtained by Edlén et al. (1969) than those reported by Kramida and Ryabtsev (2007). Our method is validated by applying the same procedure to the separation of these levels in C II

Effects of the electron correlation and Breit and hyperfine interactions on the lifetime of the 2p$^5$3s states in neutral neon

In the framework of the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method, we investigate the transition properties of four excited states in the $2p^53s$ configuration of neutral neon. The electron correlation effects are taken into account systematically by using the active space approach. The effect of higher-order correlation on fine structures is shown. We also study the influence of the Breit interaction and find that it reduces the oscillator strength of the $^3P^o_1 - ^1S_0$ transition by 17%. It turns out that the inclusion of the Breit interaction is essential even for such a light atomic system. Our ab initio calculated line strengths, oscillator strengths and transition rates are compared with other theoretical values and experimental measurements. Good agreement is found except for the $^3P^o_2 - ^1S_0$ M2 transition for which discrepancies of around 15% between theories and experiments remain. In addition, the impact of hyperfine interactions on the lifetimes of the $^3P^o_0$ and $^3P^o_2$ metastable states is investigated for the $^{21}$Ne isotope (I=3/2). We find that hyperfine interactions reduce the lifetimes drastically. For the $^3P^o_0$ state the lifetime is decreased by a factor of 630.

Mass- and field-shift isotope parameters for the $2s - 2p$ resonance doublet of lithium-like ions

It was recently shown that dielectronic recombination measurements can be used for accurately inferring changes in the nuclear mean-square charge radii of highly-charged lithium-like neodymium [Brandau et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100 073201 (2008)]. To make use of this method to derive information about the nuclear charge distribution for other elements and isotopes, accurate electronic isotope shift parameters are required. In this work, we calculate and discuss the relativistic mass- and field-shift factors for the two $2s ^{2}S_{1/2} - 2p ^{2}P^{o}_{1/2,3/2}$ transitions along the lithium isoelectronic sequence. Based on the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method, the electron correlation and the Breit interaction are taken into account systematically. The analysis of the isotope shifts for these two transitions along the isoelectronic sequence demonstrates the importance and competition between the mass shifts and the field shifts.

$M_F$-dependent Hyperfine Induced Transition Rates in an External Magnetic Field for Be-like $^{47}$Ti$^{18+}$

Hyperfine induced $2s2p~^3P_0 \rightarrow 2s^2~^1S_0$ transition rates in an external magnetic field for Be-like $^{47}$Ti were calculated based on the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method. It was found that the transition probability is dependent on the magnetic quantum number $M_F$ of the excited state, even in the weak field. The present investigation clarified that the difference of the hyperfine induced transition rate of Be-like Ti ions between experiment [Schippers {\sl et al.}, Phys Rev Lett {\bf 98}, (2007) 033001(4)] and theory does not result from the influence of external magnetic field.

Saturation spectra of low lying states of Nitrogen: reconciling experiment with theory

The hyperfine constants of the levels 2p2(3P)3s 4P_J, 2p2(3P)3p 4Po_J and 2p2(3P)3p 4Do_J, deduced by Jennerich et al. [Eur. Phys. J. D 40 (2006) 81] from the observed hyperfine structures of the transitions 2p2(3P)3s 4P_J - 2p2(3P)3p 4Po_J' and 2p2(3P)3s 4P_J - 2p2(3P)3p 4Do_J' recorded by saturation spectroscopy in the near-infrared, strongly disagree with the ab initio values of Jönsson et al. [J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 43 (2010) 115006]. We propose a new interpretation of the recorded weak spectral lines. If the latter are indeed reinterpreted as crossover signals, a new set of experimental hyperfine constants is deduced, in very good agreement with the ab initio predictions.

MCDHF calculations of the electric dipole moment of radium induced by the nuclear Schiff moment

The multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock theory (MCDHF) has been employed to calculate the electric dipole moment of the 7s6d 3D2 state of radium induced by the nuclear Schiff moment. The results are dominated by valence and core-valence electron correlation effects. We show that the correlation effects can be evaluated in a converged series of multiconfiguration expansions.
