Implementation of a double-path multimode interferometer using a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

We realize a double-path multimode matter wave interferometer with spinor Bose-Einstein condensate and observe clear spatial interference fringes as well as a periodic change of the visibility in the time domain, which we refer to as the time domain interference and which is different from the traditional double-path interferometer. By changing the relative phase of the two paths, we find that the spatial fringes first lose coherence and recover. As the number of modes increases, the time domain interference signal with the narrower peaks is observed, which is beneficial to the improvement of the resolution of the phase measurement. We also investigated the influence of initial phase configuration and phase evolution rate between different modes in the two paths. With enhanced resolution, the sensitivity of interferometric measurements of physical observables can also be improved by properly assigning measurable quantities to the relative phase between two paths.

Isolated Structures in Two-Dimensional Optical Superlattice

Overlaying commensurate optical lattices with various configurations called superlattices can lead to exotic lattice topologies and, in turn, a discovery of novel physics. In this study, by overlapping the maxima of lattices, a new isolated structure is created, while the interference of minima can generate various "sublattice" patterns. Three different kinds of primitive lattices are used to demonstrate isolated square, triangular, and hexagonal "sublattice" structures in a two-dimensional optical superlattice, the patterns of which can be manipulated dynamically by tuning the polarization, frequency, and intensity of laser beams. In addition, we propose the method of altering the relative phase to adjust the tunneling amplitudes in "sublattices." Our configurations provide unique opportunities to study particle entanglement in "lattices" formed by intersecting wells and to implement special quantum logic gates in exotic lattice geometries.

Observation of Quantum Equilibration in Dilute Bose Gases

We investigate experimentally the dynamical relaxation of a non-integrable quantum many-body system to its equilibrium state. A Bose-Einstein condensate is loaded into the first excited band of an optical lattice and let to evolve up to a few hundreds of milliseconds. Signs of quantum equilibration are observed. There is a period of time, roughly 40 ms long, during which both the aspect ratio of the cloud and its momentum distribution remain constant. In particular, the momentum distribution has a flat top and is not a Gaussian thermal distribution. After this period, the cloud becomes classical as its momentum distribution becomes Gaussian.
