A study of the requirements of p-11B fusion reactor by tokamak system code

Most tokamak devices including ITER exploit the D-T reaction due to its high reactivity, but the wall loading caused by the associated 14MeV neutrons will limit the further development of fusion performance at high beta. To explore p-11B fusion cycle, a tokamak system code is extended to incorporate the relativistic bremsstrahlung since the temperature of electrons is approaching the rest energy of electron. By choosing an optimum p-11B mix and ion temperature, some representative sets of parameters of p-11B tokamak reactor, whose fusion gain exceeds 1, have been found under the thermal wall loading limit and beta limit when synchrotron radiation loss is neglected. However, the fusion gain greatly decreases when the effect of synchrotron radiation loss is considered. Helium ash also plays an important role in the fusion performance, and we have found that the helium confinement time must be below the energy confinement time to keep the helium concentration ratio in an acceptable range.

Ultimately-scaled electrodes for contacting individual atomically-precise graphene nanoribbons

Bottom-up synthesized graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are quantum materials that can be structured with atomic precision, providing unprecedented control over their physical properties. Accessing the intrinsic functionality of GNRs for quantum technology applications requires the manipulation of single charges, spins, or photons at the level of an individual GNR. However, experimentally, contacting individual GNRs remains challenging due to their nanometer-sized width and length as well as their high density on the metallic growth substrate. Here, we demonstrate the contacting and electrical characterization of individual GNRs in a multi-gate device architecture using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) as ultimately-scaled electrodes. The GNR-SWNT devices exhibit well-defined quantum transport phenomena, including Coulomb blockade, excited states, and Franck-Condon blockade, all characteristics pointing towards the contacting of an individual GNR. Combined with the multi-gate architecture, this contacting method opens a road for the integration of GNRs in quantum devices to exploit their topologically trivial and non-trivial nature.

Hanle detection for optical clocks

Considering the strong inhomogeneous spatial polarization and intensity distribution of spontaneous decay fluorescence due to the Hanle effect, we propose and demonstrate a universe Hanle detection configuration of electron-shelving method for optical clocks. Experimental results from Ca atomic beam optical frequency standard with 423 nm electron-shelving method show that a designed Hanle detection geometry with optimized magnetic field direction, detection laser beam propagation and polarization direction, and detector position can improve the fluorescence collection rate by more than one order of magnitude comparing with that of inefficient geometry. With the fixed 423 nm fluorescence, the improved 657 nm optical frequency standard signal intensity is presented. And the potential application of the Hanle detection geometry designed for facilitating the fluorescence collection for optical lattice clock with a limited solid angle of the fluorescence collection has been discussed. This Hanle detection configuration is also effective for ion detection in ion optical clock and quantum information experiments. Besides, a cylinder fluorescence collection structure is designed to increase the solid angle of the fluorescence collection in Ca atomic beam optical frequency standard.
