RiffleScrambler - a memory-hard password storing function

We introduce RiffleScrambler: a new family of directed acyclic graphs and a corresponding data-independent memory hard function with password independent memory access. We prove its memory hardness in the random oracle model. RiffleScrambler is similar to Catena -- updates of hashes are determined by a graph (bit-reversal or double-butterfly graph in Catena). The advantage of the RiffleScrambler over Catena is that the underlying graphs are not predefined but are generated per salt, as in Balloon Hashing. Such an approach leads to higher immunity against practical parallel attacks. RiffleScrambler offers better efficiency than Balloon Hashing since the in-degree of the underlying graph is equal to 3 (and is much smaller than in Ballon Hashing). At the same time, because the underlying graph is an instance of a Superconcentrator, our construction achieves the same time-memory trade-offs.

Computable bounds on the spectral gap for unreliable Jackson networks

The goal of this paper is to identify exponential convergence rates and to find computable bounds for them for Markov processes representing unreliable Jackson networks. First we use the bounds of Lawler and Sokal in order to show that, for unreliable Jackson networks, the spectral gap is strictly positive if and only if the spectral gaps for the corresponding coordinate birth and death processes are positive. Next, utilizing some results on birth and death processes, we find bounds on the spectral gap for network processes in terms of the hazard and equilibrium functions of the one dimensional marginal distributions of the stationary distribution of the network. These distributions must be in this case strongly light-tailed, in the sense that their discrete hazard functions have to be separated from zero. We relate these hazard functions with the corresponding networks' service rate functions using the equilibrium rates of the stationary one dimensional marginal distributions. We compare the obtained bounds on the spectral gap with some other known bounds.

Empirical process of residuals for regression models with long memory errors

We consider the residual empirical process in random design regression with long memory errors. We establish its limiting behaviour, showing that its rates of convergence are different from the rates of convergence for to the empirical process based on (unobserved) errors. Also, we study a residual empirical process with estimated parameters. Its asymptotic distribution can be used to construct Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Cramér-Smirnov-von Mises, or other goodness-of-fit tests. Theoretical results are justified by simulation studies.

Some results on random design regression with long memory errors and predictors

This paper studies nonparametric regression with long memory (LRD) errors and predictors. First, we formulate general conditions which guarantee the standard rate of convergence for a nonparametric kernel estimator. Second, we calculate the Mean Integrated Squared Error (MISE). In particular, we show that LRD of errors may influence MISE. On the other hand, an estimator for a shape function is typically not influenced by LRD in errors. Finally, we investigate properties of a data-driven bandwidth choice. We show that Averaged Squared Error (ASE) is a good approximation of MISE, however, this is not the case for a cross-validation criterion.

Strong Stationary Duality for Möbius Monotone Markov Chains: Unreliable Networks

For Markov chains with a partially ordered finite state space we show strong stationary duality under the condition of Möbius monotonicity of the chain. We show relations of Möbius monotonicity to other definitions of monotone chains. We give examples of dual chains in this context which have transitions only upwards. We illustrate general theory by an analysis of nonsymmetric random walks on the cube with an application to networks of queues.

The exact asymptotic for the stationary distribution of some unreliable systems

In this paper we find asymptotic distribution for some unreliable networks. Using Markov Additive Structure and Adan, Foley, McDonald method, we find the exact asymptotic for the stationary distribution. With the help of MA structure and matrix geometric approach, we also investigate the asymptotic when breakdown intensity is small. In particular, two different asymptotic regimes for small breakdown intensity suggest two different patterns of large deviations, which is confirmed by simulation study.
