$\mathbb{Z}_4$-symmetric perturbations to the XY model from functional renormalization

We employ the second order of the derivative expansion of the nonperturbative renormalization group to study cubic ($\mathbb{Z}_4$-symmetric) perturbations to the classical $XY$ model in dimensionality $d\in [2,4]$. In $d=3$ we provide accurate estimates of the eigenvalue $y_4$ corresponding to the leading irrelevant perturbation and follow the evolution of the physical picture upon reducing spatial dimensionality from $d=3$ towards $d=2$, where we approximately recover the onset of the Kosterlitz-Thouless physics. We analyze the interplay between the leading irrelevant eigenvalues related to $O(2)$-symmetric and $\mathbb{Z}_4$-symmetric perturbations and their approximate collapse for $d\to 2$. We compare and discuss different implementations of the derivative expansion in cases involving one and two invariants of the corresponding symmetry group.

Thermodynamics of the two-dimensional XY model from functional renormalization

We solve the nonperturbative renormalization-group flow equations for the two-dimensional XY model at the truncation level of the (complete) second-order derivative expansion. We compute the thermodynamic properties in the high-temperature phase and compare the non-universal features specific to the XY model with results from Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, we study the position and magnitude of the specific heat peak as a function of temperature. The obtained results compare well with Monte Carlo simulations. We additionally gauge the accuracy of simplified nonperturbative renormalization-group treatments relying on $ϕ^4$-type truncations. Our computation indicates that such an approximation is insufficient in the high-$T$ phase and a correct analysis of the specific heat profile requires account of an infinite number of interaction vertices.

Quantum wetting transitions in two dimensions: an alternative path to non-universal interfacial singularities

We consider two-dimensional ($d=2$) systems with short-ranged microscopic interactions, where interface unbinding (wetting) transitions occur in the limit of vanishing temperature $T$. For $T=0$ the transition is characterized by non-universal critical properties analogous to those established for thermal wetting transitions in $d=3$, albeit with a redefined capillary parameter $\tildeω$. Within a functional renormalization-group treatment of an effective interfacial model, we compute the finite temperature phase diagram, exhibiting a line of interface unbinding transitions, terminating at $T=0$ with an interfacial quantum critical point. At finite $T$ we identify distinct scaling regimes, reflecting the interplay between quantum and thermal interfacial fluctuations. A crossover line marking the onset of the quantum critical regime is described by the $d=3$ interfacial correlation-length exponent $ν_{||}$. This opens a new way to investigate the non-universal character of $ν_{||}$ without penetrating the true critical regime. On the other hand, the emergent interfacial quantum critical regime shows no signatures of non-universality.

Fluctuations of imbalanced fermionic superfluids in two dimensions induce continuous quantum phase transitions and non-Fermi liquid behavior

We study the nature of superfluid pairing in imbalanced Fermi mixtures in two spatial dimensions. We present evidence that the combined effect of Fermi surface mismatch and order parameter fluctuations of the superfluid condensate can lead to continuous quantum phase transitions from a normal Fermi mixture to an intermediate Sarma-Liu-Wilczek superfluid with two gapless Fermi surfaces -- even when mean-field theory (incorrectly) predicts a first order transition to a phase-separated "Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer plus excess fermions" ground state. We propose a mechanism for non-Fermi liquid behavior from repeated scattering processes between the two Fermi surfaces and fluctuating Cooper pairs. Prospects for experimental observation with ultracold atoms are discussed.

Critical Casimir forces for O(N) models from functional renormalization

We consider the classical O(N)-symmetric models confined in a d-dimensional slab-like geometry and subject to periodic boundary conditions. Applying the one-particle-irreducible variant of functional renormalization group (RG) we compute the critical Casimir forces acting between the slab boundaries. The applied truncation of the exact functional RG flow equation retains interaction vertices of arbitrary order. We evaluate the critical Casimir amplitudes Δ_f(d,N) for continuously varying dimensionality between two and three and N = 1,2. Our findings are in very good agreement with exact results for d=2 and N=1. For d=3 our results are closer to Monte Carlo predictions than earlier field-theoretic RG calculations. Inclusion of the wave function renormalization and the corresponding anomalous dimension in the calculation has negligible impact on the computed Casimir forces.

Quantum interface unbinding transitions

We consider interfacial phenomena accompanying bulk quantum phase transitions in presence of surface fields. On general grounds we argue that the surface contribution to the system free energy involves a line of singularities characteristic of an interfacial phase transition, occurring below the bulk transition temperature T_c down to T=0. This implies the occurrence of an interfacial quantum critical regime extending into finite temperatures and located within the portion of the phase diagram where the bulk is ordered. Even in situations, where the bulk order sets in discontinuously at T=0, the system's behavior at the boundary may be controlled by a divergent length scale if the tricritical temperature is sufficiently low. Relying on an effective interfacial model we compute the surface phase diagram in bulk spatial dimensionality $d\geq 2$ and extract the values of the exponents describing the interfacial singularities in $d\geq 3$.

Nematic Quantum Criticality Without Order

We consider a two-dimensional interacting Fermi system which displays a nematic phase within mean-field theory. The system is analyzed using a non-perturbative renormalization-group scheme. We find that order-parameter fluctuations can suppress the nematic order obtained in mean-field theory even at zero temperature. For a suitable choice of parameters a quantum critical point surrounded by a disordered phase can be realized, giving rise to quantum critical behavior in the absence of an ordered regime in the phase diagram.

Singular non-ordering susceptibility at a Pomeranchuk instability

We study magnetic susceptibilities of two-dimensional itinerant electron systems exhibiting symmetry-breaking Fermi surface distortions, the so-called d-wave Pomeranchuk instability, in a magnetic field. In a pure forward scattering model, the longitudinal susceptibility chi^{zz} is found to exhibit a jump at a critical point. The magnitude of this jump diverges at a tricritical point. When scattering processes involving finite momentum transfers are allowed for, chi^{zz} is expected to diverge also at a critical point. The system displays multiple critical fluctuations. We argue that the features of chi^{zz} are general properties associated with singularities of a non-ordering susceptibility, leading to implications for a variety of materials including Sr_3Ru_2O_7.
