Snowmass White Paper: Effective Field Theories for Condensed Matter Systems

We review recent progress and a number of future directions for applications of effective field theory methods to condensed matter systems broadly defined. Our emphasis is on areas that have allowed a fertile exchange of ideas between high energy physics and many-body theory. We discuss developments in the effective field theory of spontaneous symmetry breaking, of hydrodynamics and non-equilibrium dynamics more generally, fracton phases of matter, and dualities between 2+1 dimensional field theories. We furthermore discuss the application of effective field theory to non-Fermi liquids, the dynamics of entanglement entropy and to condensed matter aspects of cosmology.

Hydrodynamic effective field theory and the analyticity of hydrostatic correlators

We study one-loop corrections to retarded and symmetric hydrostatic correlation functions within the Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theory framework for relativistic hydrodynamics, focusing on charge diffusion. We first consider the simplified setup with only diffusive charge density fluctuations, and then augment it with momentum fluctuations in a model where the sound modes can be ignored. We show that the loop corrections, which generically induce non-analyticities and long-range effects at finite frequency, non-trivially preserve analyticity of retarded correlation functions in spatial momentum due to the KMS constraint, as a manifestation of thermal screening. For the purposes of this analysis, we develop an interacting field theory for diffusive hydrodynamics, seen as a limit of relativistic hydrodynamics in the absence of temperature and longitudinal velocity fluctuations.

Einstein's Equations in Matter

Einstein's equations in matter are gravitational analogues of Maxwell's equations in matter, providing an effective classical description of gravitational fields. We derive Einstein's equations in matter for relativistic fluids, and use them to illustrate how the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations are modified by the matter's response to curvature. For a gas of massive fermions, we evaluate how the effective Newton's constant and other susceptibilities depend on the temperature and density. In anti-de Sitter space, we study the $O(1/(T\ell)^2)$ corrections to the geometries sourced by perfect fluids, and illustrate the breakdown of hydrostatics in AdS at small temperatures.

Non-universality of hydrodynamics

We investigate the effects of stochastic interactions on hydrodynamic correlation functions using the Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theory. We identify new "stochastic transport coefficients" that are invisible in the classical constitutive relations, but nonetheless affect the late-time behaviour of hydrodynamic correlation functions through loop corrections. These results indicate that classical transport coefficients do not provide a universal characterisation of long-distance, late-time correlations even within the framework of fluctuating hydrodynamics.

Thermodynamics of polarized relativistic matter

We give the free energy of equilibrium relativistic matter subject to external gravitational and electromagnetic fields, to one-derivative order in the gradients of the external fields. The free energy allows for a straightforward derivation of bound currents and bound momenta in equilibrium. At leading order, the energy-momentum tensor admits a simple expression in terms of the polarization tensor. Beyond the leading order, electric and magnetic polarization vectors are intrinsically ambiguous. The physical effects of polarization, such as the correlation between the magneto-vortically induced surface charge and the electro-vortically induced surface current, are not ambiguous.

On thermal fluctuations and the generating functional in relativistic hydrodynamics

We discuss a real-time generating functional for correlation functions in dissipative relativistic hydrodynamics which takes into account thermal fluctuations of the hydrodynamic variables. Starting from the known form of these correlation functions in the linearized regime, we integrate to find a generating functional which we can interpret within the CTP formalism, provided the space-time and internal global symmetries are realized in a specific manner in the (r,a) sectors. We then verify that this symmetry realization, when implemented in an effective action for hydrodynamic fields in the (r,a) basis, leads to a consistent derivative expansion for the constitutive relations at the nonlinear level, modulo constraints associated with the existence of an equilibrium state.

Chiral conductivities and effective field theory

We construct the three-dimensional effective field theory which reproduces low-momentum static correlation functions in four-dimensional quantum field theories with U(1) axial anomalies and a dynamical vector gauge field, in thermal equilibrium. We compute radiative corrections to parity-violating chiral conductivities, to leading order in the effective theory. All of the anomaly-induced transport is susceptible to radiative corrections, except for certain two-point functions which are required by symmetry to vanish.

Towards hydrodynamics without an entropy current

We present a generating functional which describes the equilibrium thermodynamic response of a relativistic system to external sources. A variational principle gives rise to constraints on the response parameters of relativistic hydrodynamics without making use of an entropy current. Our method reproduces and extends results available in the literature. It also provides a technique for efficiently computing n-point zero-frequency hydrodynamic correlation functions without the need to solve the equations of hydrodynamics.

Parity-Violating Hydrodynamics in 2+1 Dimensions

We study relativistic hydrodynamics of normal fluids in two spatial dimensions. When the microscopic theory breaks parity, extra transport coefficients appear in the hydrodynamic regime, including the Hall viscosity, and the anomalous Hall conductivity. In this work we classify all the transport coefficients in first order hydrodynamics. We then use properties of response functions and the positivity of entropy production to restrict the possible coefficients in the constitutive relations. All the parity-breaking transport coefficients are dissipationless, and some of them are related to the thermodynamic response to an external magnetic field and to vorticity. In addition, we give a holographic example of a strongly interacting relativistic fluid where the parity-violating transport coefficients are computable.

The stickiness of sound: An absolute lower limit on viscosity and the breakdown of second order relativistic hydrodynamics

Hydrodynamics predicts long-lived sound and shear waves. Thermal fluctuations in these waves can lead to the diffusion of momentum density, contributing to the shear viscosity and other transport coefficients. Within viscous hydrodynamics in 3+1 dimensions, this leads to a positive contribution to the shear viscosity, which is finite but inversely proportional to the microscopic shear viscosity. Therefore the effective infrared viscosity is bounded from below. The contribution to the second-order transport coefficient $τ_π$ is divergent, which means that second-order relativistic viscous hydrodynamics is inconsistent below some frequency scale. We estimate the importance of each effect for the Quark-Gluon Plasma, finding them to be minor if $η/s = 0.16$ but important if $η/s = 0.08$.

Holography and hydrodynamics: diffusion on stretched horizons

We show that long-time, long-distance fluctuations of plane-symmetric horizons exhibit universal hydrodynamic behavior. By considering classical fluctuations around black-brane backgrounds, we find both diffusive and shear modes. The diffusion constant and the shear viscosity are given by simple formulas, in terms of metric components. For a given metric, the answers can be interpreted as corresponding kinetic coefficients in the holographically dual theory. For the near-extremal Dp, M2 and M5 branes, the computed kinetic coefficients coincide with the results of independent AdS/CFT calculations. In all the examples, the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density is equal to \hbar/(4πk_B), suggesting a special meaning of this value.
