Trion formation and unconventional superconductivity in a three-dimensional model with short-range attraction

A three-fermion problem in a three-dimensional lattice with anisotropic hopping is solved by discretizing the Schroedinger equation in momentum space. Interparticle interaction comprises on-site Hubbard repulsion and in-plane nearest-neighbor attraction. By comparing the energy of three-fermion bound clusters (trions) with the energy of one pair plus one free particle, a trion formation threshold is accurately determined, and the region of pair stability is mapped out. It is found that the "close-packed" density of fermion pairs is highest in a strongly anisotropic model. It is also argued that pair superconductivity with the highest critical temperature is always close to trion formation, which makes the system prone to phase separation and local charge ordering.

Periodically Driven Adiabatic Bipolarons

Small lattice bipolarons driven by external harmonic fields are considered in the adiabatic approximation. Resonant excitation of ions modulates the trapping potential and promotes hole transfer between neighboring atomic layers. It leads to a dramatic decrease of the apparent bipolaron mass compared to the undriven case. This effect offers an explanation for dynamic stabilization of superconductivity at high temperatures recently observed in layered cuprates.

Ferromagnetism and Borromean binding in three-fermion clusters

A three-particle spin-1/2 fermion problem with on-site repulsion and nearest-neighbor attraction is solved on the two-dimensional square lattice by discretizing a Schroedinger equation in momentum space. Energies of bound complexes (trions) and their binding conditions are obtained. For total spin S = 1/2, a wide region of trion instability toward decaying into a stable singlet pair plus a free fermion is identified. The instability is attributed to the formation of a wave function node upon addition of the third fermion. In the S = 3/2 sector, trions are found to form before triplet pairs indicating Borromean binding. In the strong repulsion, strong attraction limit the system transitions from an S = 1/2 ground state to a ferromagnetic S = 3/2 ground state in agreement with the Nagaoka theorem for a four-site plaquette.

Transient electrophoretic current in a nonpolar solvent

The transient electric current of surfactants dissolved in a nonpolar solvent is investigated both experimentally and theoretically in the parallel-plate geometry. Due to a low concentration of free charges the cell can be completely polarized by an external voltage of several volts. In this state, all the charged micelles are compacted against the electrodes. After the voltage is set to zero the reverse current features a sharp discharge spike and a broad peak. This shape and its variation with the compacting voltage are reproduced in a one-dimensional drift-diffusion model. The model reveals the broad peak is formed by a competition between an increasing number of charges drifting back to the middle of the cell and a decreasing electric field that drives the motion. After complete polarization is achieved, the shape of the peak stops evolving with further increase of the compacting voltage. The spike-peak separation time grows logarithmically with the charge content in the bulk. The time peak is a useful measure of the micelle mobility. Time integration of the peak yields the total charge in the system. By measuring its variation with temperature, the activation energy of bulk charge generation has been found to be 0.126 eV.

Path integrals in the physics of lattice polarons

A path-integral approach to lattice polarons is developed. The method is based on exact analytical elimination of phonons and subsequent Monte Carlo simulation of self-interacting fermions. The analytical basis of the method is presented with emphasis on visualization of polaron effects, which path integrals provide. Numerical results on the polaron energy, mass, spectrum and density of states are given for short-range and long-range electron-phonon interactions. It is shown that certain long-range interactions significantly reduce the polaron mass, and anisotropic interactions enhance polaron anisotropy. The isotope effect on the polaron mass and spectrum is discussed. A path-integral approach to the Jahn-Teller polaron is developed. Extensions of the method to lattice bipolarons and to more complex polaron models are outlined.
