Asymptotics of parabolic Green's functions on lattices

For parabolic spatially discrete equations, we consider Green's functions, also known as heat kernels on lattices. We obtain their asymptotic expansions with respect to powers of time variable $t$ up to an arbitrary order and estimate the remainders uniformly on the whole lattice. The spatially discrete (difference) operators under consideration are finite-difference approximations of continuous strongly elliptic differential operators (with constant coefficients) of arbitrary even order in $\mathbb R^d$ with arbitrary $d\in\mathbb N$. This genericity, besides numerical and deterministic lattice-dynamics applications, allows one to obtain higher-order asymptotics of transition probability functions for continuous-time random walks on $\mathbb Z^d$ and other lattices.

Dynamics of Discrete Time Systems with a Hysteresis Stop Operator

We consider a piecewise linear two-dimensional dynamical system that couples a linear equation with the so-called stop operator. Global dynamics and bifurcations of this system are studied depending on two parameters. The system is motivated by modifications to general-equilibrium macroeconomic models that attempt to capture the frictions and memory-dependence of realistic economic agents.

Rattling in spatially discrete diffusion equations with hysteresis

The paper treats a reaction-diffusion equation with hysteretic nonlinearity on a one-dimensional lattice. It arises as a result of the spatial discretization of the corresponding continuous model with so-called nontransverse initial data and exhibits a propagating microstructure --- which we call {\em rattling} --- in the hysteretic component of the solution. We analyze this microstructure and determine the speed of its propagation depending on the parameters of hysteresis and the nontransversality coefficient in the initial data.

Asymptotics of sign-changing patterns in hysteretic systems with diffusive thresholds

We consider a reaction-diffusion system including discontinuous hysteretic relay operators in reaction terms. This system is motivated by an epigenetic model that describes the evolution of a population of organisms which can switch their phenotype in response to changes of the state of the environment. The model exhibits formation of patterns in the space of distributions of the phenotypes over the range of admissible switching strategies. We propose asymptotic formulas for the pattern and the process of its formation.

Recent Advances in Reaction-Diffusion Equations with Non-Ideal Relays

We survey recent results on reaction-diffusion equations with discontinuous hysteretic nonlinearities. We connect these equations with free boundary problems and introduce a related notion of spatial transversality for initial data and solutions. We assert that the equation with transverse initial data possesses a unique solution, which remains transverse for some time, and also describe its regularity. At a moment when the solution becomes nontransverse, we discretize the spatial variable and analyze the resulting lattice dynamical system with hysteresis. In particular, we discuss a new pattern formation mechanism --- {\it rattling}, which indicates how one should reset the continuous model to make it well posed.

Stability for semilinear parabolic problems in $L_2$, $W^{1,2}$, and interpolation spaces

An asymptotic stability result for parabolic semilinear problems in $L_2(Ω)$ and interpolation spaces is shown. Some known results about stability in $W^{1,2}(Ω)$ are improved for semilinear parabolic mixed boundary value problems. The approach is based on Amann's power extrapolation scales. In a Hilbert space setting, a better understanding of this approach is provided for operators satisfying Kato's square root problem; as a side result some equivalent characterizations of these operators are obtained.

Asymptotics of solutions for nonlocal elliptic problems in plane angles

We investigate asymptotic behavior of solutions for nonlocal elliptic boundary value problems in plane angles and in ${\mathbb R}^2\backslash\{0\}$. Such problems arise as model ones when studying asymptotics of solutions for nonlocal elliptic problems in bounded domains. We obtain explicit formulas for the asymptotic coefficients in terms of eigenvectors and associated vectors of both adjoint nonlocal operators (acting in spaces of distributions) and formally adjoint (with respect to the Green formula) nonlocal problems.

Asymptotics of solutions for nonlocal elliptic problems in plane bounded domains

The paper is devoted to the study of asymptotic behavior of solutions for nonlocal elliptic problems in weighted spaces. We deal with the most difficult case where the support of nonlocal terms intersects with the boundary of a plane bounded domain. In this situation, a general form of the asymptotics is investigated and coefficients in the asymptotics are calculated.

Bounded perturbations of two-dimensional diffusion processes with nonlocal conditions near the boundary

We study the existence of Feller semigroups arising in the theory of multidimensional diffusion processes. We study bounded perturbations of elliptic operators with boundary conditions containing an integral over the closure of the domain with respect to a nonnegative Borel measure without assuming that the measure is small. We state sufficient conditions on the measure guaranteeing that the corresponding nonlocal operator is the generator of a Feller semigroup.

Generalized solutions of nonlocal elliptic problems

An elliptic equation of order $2m$ with general nonlocal boundary-value conditions, in a plane bounded domain $G$ with piecewise smooth boundary, is considered. Generalized solutions belonging to the Sobolev space $W_2^m(G)$ are studied. The Fredholm property of the unbounded operator corresponding to the elliptic equation, acting on $L_2(G)$, and defined for functions from the space $W_2^m(G)$ that satisfy homogeneous nonlocal conditions is proved.

Nonlocal elliptic problems with nonlinear argument transformations near the points of conjugation

We consider elliptic equations of order $2m$ in a domain $G\subset\mathbb R^n$ with nonlocal conditions that connect the values of the unknown function and its derivatives on $(n-1)$-dimensional submanifolds $Υ_i$ (where $\bigcup_iΥ_i=\partial G$) with the values on $ω_{is}(\overlineΥ_i)\subset\overline G$. Nonlocal elliptic problems in dihedral angles arise as model problems near the conjugation points $g\in\overlineΥ_i\capΥ_j\ne\varnothing$, $i\ne j$. We study the case where the transformations $ω_{is}$ correspond to nonlinear transformations in the model problems. It is proved that the operator of the problem remains Fredholm and its index does not change as we pass from linear argument transformations to nonlinear ones.

Nonlocal problems for elliptic equations in dihedral angles and the Green formula

Nonlocal problems for higher-order elliptic operators in dihedral and plane angles are considered. The Green formula is obtained, which leads to adjoint problems that take the form of nonlocal transmission problems in dihedral and plane angles. This allows us to establish necessary conditions of Fredholm solvability and sufficient conditions of one-valued solvability for nonlocal problems in dihedral angles.

On the existence of a Feller semigroup with atomic measure in nonlocal boundary condition

The existence of Feller semigroups arising in the theory of multidimensional diffusion processes is studied. An elliptic operator of second order is considered on a plane bounded region $G$. Its domain of definition consists of continuous functions satisfying a nonlocal condition on the boundary of the region. In general, the nonlocal term is an integral of a function over the closure of the region $G$ with respect to a nonnegative Borel measure $μ(y,dη)$, $y\in\partial G$. It is proved that the operator is a generator of a Feller semigroup in the case where the measure is atomic. The smallness of the measure is not assumed.

On the Fredholm and unique solvability of nonlocal elliptic problems in multidimensional domains

We consider elliptic equations of order $2m$ in a bounded domain $Q\subset\mathbb R^n$ with nonlocal boundary-value conditions connecting the values of a solution and its derivatives on $(n-1)$-dimensional smooth manifolds $Γ_i$ with the values on manifolds $ω_{i}(Γ_i)$, where $\bigcup_i\overline{Γ_i}=\partial Q$ is a boundary of $Q$ and $ω_i$ are $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms. By proving a priori estimates for solutions and constructing a right regularizer, we show the Fredholm solvability in weighted space. For nonlocal elliptic problems with a parameter, we prove the unique solvability.

On the index instability for some nonlocal elliptic problems

The Fredholm index of unbounded operators defined on generalized solutions of nonlocal elliptic problems in plane bounded domains is investigated. It is known that nonlocal terms with smooth coefficients having zero of a certain order at the conjugation points do not affect the index of the unbounded operator. In this paper, we construct examples showing that the index may change under nonlocal perturbations with coefficients not vanishing at the points of conjugation of boundary-value conditions.

preprint2014arXiv

On the stability of the index of unbounded nonlocal operators in Sobolev spaces

Unbounded operators corresponding to nonlocal elliptic problems on a bounded region $G\subset\mathbb R^2$ are considered. The domain of these operators consists of functions from the Sobolev space $W_2^m(G)$ being generalized solutions of the corresponding $2m$-order elliptic equation with right-hand side from $L_2(G)$ and satisfying homogeneous nonlocal boundary conditions. It is known that such unbounded operators have the Fredholm property. It is proved in the paper that low-order terms in the differential equation do not affect the index of the operator. Conditions under which nonlocal perturbations on the boundary do not change the index are also formulated.

Pattern formation in parabolic equations containing hysteresis with diffusive thresholds

We consider a reaction-diffusion system with discontinuous reaction terms modeled by non-ideal relays. The system is motivated by an epigenetic population model of evolution of two-phenotype bacteria which switch phenotype in response to variations of environment. We prove the formation of patterns in the phenotype space. The mechanism responsible for pattern formation is based on memory (hysteresis) of the non-ideal relays.

Smoothness of generalized solutions for nonlocal elliptic problems on the plane

We study smoothness of generalized solutions of nonlocal elliptic problems in plane bounded domains with piecewise smooth boundary. The case where the support of nonlocal terms can intersect the boundary is considered. We announce conditions that are necessary and sufficient for any generalized solution to possess an appropriate smoothness (in terms of Sobolev spaces). The proofs are given in the forthcoming paper.

preprint2014arXiv

Solvability of nonlocal elliptic problems in Sobolev spaces

We study elliptic equations of order $2m$ with nonlocal boundary-value conditions in plane angles and in bounded domains, dealing with the case where the support of nonlocal terms intersects the boundary. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions under which nonlocal problems are Fredholm in Sobolev spaces and, respectively, in weighted spaces with small weight exponents. We also obtain an asymptotics of solutions to nonlocal problems near the conjugation points on the boundary, where solutions may have power singularities.

preprint2014arXiv

Solvability of the boundary value problem for some differential--difference equations

Solvability and smoothness of generalized solutions to boundary value problems for not self-adjoint differential-difference equations are studied. Necessary and sufficient conditions of Fredholmian solvability (with index zero) are established. Smoothness of generalized solutions is considered in terms of index of the corresponding differential--difference operator.

The consistency conditions and the smoothness of generalized solutions of nonlocal elliptic problems

We study smoothness of generalized solutions of nonlocal elliptic problems in plane bounded domains with piecewise smooth boundary. The case where the support of nonlocal terms can intersect the boundary is considered. We find conditions that are necessary and sufficient for any generalized solution to possess an appropriate smoothness (in terms of Sobolev spaces). Both homogeneous and nonhomogeneous nonlocal boundary-value conditions are studied.

Unbounded perturbations of two-dimensional diffusion processes with nonlocal boundary conditions

The existence of Feller semigroups arising in the theory of multidimensional diffusion processes is studied. Unbounded perturbations of elliptic operators (in particular, integro-differential operators) are considered in plane bounded regions. Their domain of definition is given by a nonlocal boundary condition involving the integral over the closure of the region with respect to a nonnegative Borel measure. The support of the measure may intersect with the boundary, and the measure need not be small. We formulate sufficient conditions on unbounded perturbations of elliptic operator and on the Borel measure in the nonlocal boundary condition which guarantee that the corresponding nonlocal operator is a generator of a Feller semigroup.

Well-posedness of parabolic equations containing hysteresis with diffusive thresholds

We study complex systems arising, in particular, in population dynamics, developmental biology, and bacterial metabolic processes, in which each individual element obeys a relatively simple hysteresis law (a non-ideal relay). Assuming that hysteresis thresholds fluctuate, we consider the arising reaction-diffusion system. In this case, the spatial variable corresponds to the hysteresis threshold. We describe the collective behavior of such a system in terms of the Preisach operator with time-dependent measure which is a part of the solution for the whole system. We prove the well-posedness of the system and discuss the long-term behavior of solutions.

preprint2013arXiv

Systems of reaction-diffusion equations with spatially distributed hysteresis

We study systems of reaction-diffusion equations with discontinuous spatially distributed hysteresis in the right-hand side. The input of hysteresis is given by a vector-valued function of space and time. Such systems describe hysteretic interaction of non-diffusive (bacteria, cells, etc.) and diffusive (nutrient, proteins, etc.) substances leading to formation of spatial patterns. We provide sufficient conditions under which the problem is well posed in spite of the discontinuity of hysteresis. These conditions are formulated in terms of geometry of manifolds defining hysteresis thresholds and the graph of initial data.

preprint2012arXiv

Reaction-diffusion equations with spatially distributed hysteresis

The paper deals with reaction-diffusion equations involving a hysteretic discontinuity in the source term, which is defined at each spatial point. In particular, such problems describe chemical reactions and biological processes in which diffusive and nondiffusive substances interact according to hysteresis law. We find sufficient conditions that guarantee the existence and uniqueness of solutions as well as their continuous dependence on initial data.

preprint2012arXiv

Uniqueness of transverse solutions for reaction-diffusion equations with spatially distributed hysteresis

The paper deals with reaction-diffusion equations involving a hysteretic discontinuity in the source term, which is defined at each spatial point. Such problems describe biological processes and chemical reactions in which diffusive and nondiffusive substances interact according to hysteresis law. Under the assumption that the initial data are spatially transverse, we prove a theorem on the uniqueness of solutions. The theorem covers the case of non-Lipschitz hysteresis branches arising in the theory of slow-fast systems.

Symmetric periodic solutions of parabolic problems with hysteresis

We consider the heat equation in a multidimensional domain with nonlocal hysteresis feedback control in a boundary condition. Thermostat is our prototype model. We construct all periodic solutions with exactly two switching on the period and study their stability. Coexistence of several periodic solutions with different stability properties is proved to be possible. A mechanism of appearance and disappearance of periodic solutions is investigated.
