Non-Commutative Stochastic Processes and Bi-Free Probability

In this paper, a connection between bi-free probability and the theory of non-commutative stochastic processes is examined. Specifically it is demonstrated that the transition operators for non-commutative stochastic processes can be modelled using technology from bi-free probability. Several important examples are recovered with this approach and new formula are obtained for processes with free increments. The benefits of this approach are also discussed.

Restricted invertibility of continuous matrix functions

Motivated by an influential result of Bourgain and Tzafriri, we consider continuous matrix functions $A:\mathbb{R}\to M_{n\times n}$ and lower $\ell_2$-norm bounds associated with their restriction to certain subspaces. We prove that for any such $A$ with unit-length columns, there exists a continuous choice of subspaces $t\mapsto U(t)\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ such that for $v\in U(t)$, $\|A(t)v\|\geq c\|v\|$ where $c$ is some universal constant. Furthermore, the $U(t)$ are chosen so that their dimension satisfies a lower bound with optimal asymptotic dependence on $n$ and $\sup_{t\in \mathbb{R}}\|A(t)\|.$ We provide two methods. The first relies on an orthogonality argument, while the second is probabilistic and combinatorial in nature. The latter does not yield the optimal bound for $\dim(U(t))$ but the $U(t)$ obtained in this way are guaranteed to have a canonical representation as joined-together spaces spanned by subsets of the unit vector basis.

Majorization in C*-algebras

We investigate the closed convex hull of unitary orbits of selfadjoint elements in arbitrary unital C*-algebras. Using a notion of majorization against unbounded traces, a characterization of these closed convex hulls is obtained. Furthermore, for C*-algebras satisfying Blackadar's strict comparison of positive elements by traces or for collections of C*-algebras with a uniform bound on their nuclear dimension, an upper bound for the number of unitary conjugates in a convex combination required to approximate an element in the closed convex hull within a given error is shown to exist. This property, however, fails for certain "badly behaved" simple nuclear C*-algebras.

Closed Convex Hulls of Unitary Orbits in C$^*$-Algebras of Real Rank Zero

In this paper, we study closed convex hulls of unitary orbits in various C$^*$-algebras. For unital C$^*$-algebras with real rank zero and a faithful tracial state determining equivalence of projections, a notion of majorization describes the closed convex hulls of unitary orbits for self-adjoint operators. Other notions of majorization are examined in these C$^*$-algebras. Combining these ideas with the Dixmier property, we demonstrate unital, infinite dimensional C$^*$-algebras of real rank zero and strict comparison of projections with respect to a faithful tracial state must be simple and have a unique tracial state. Also, closed convex hulls of unitary orbits of self-adjoint operators are fully described in unital, simple, purely infinite C$^*$-algebras.

Independences and Partial $R$-Transforms in Bi-Free Probability

In this paper, we examine how various notions of independence in non-commutative probability theory arise in bi-free probability. We exhibit how Boolean and monotone independence occur from bi-free pairs of faces and establish a Kac/Loeve Theorem for bi-free independence. In addition, we prove that bi-freeness is preserved under tensoring with matrices. Finally, via combinatorial arguments, we construct partial $R$-transforms in two settings relating the moments and cumulants of a left-right pair of operators.

On Operator-Valued Bi-Free Distributions

In this paper, operator-valued bi-free distributions are investigated. Given a subalgebra $D$ of a unital algebra $B$, it is established that a two-faced family $Z$ is bi-free from $(B, B^{\mathrm{op}})$ over $D$ if and only if certain conditions relating the $B$-valued and $D$-valued bi-free cumulants of $Z$ are satisfied. Using this, we verify that a two-faced family of matrices is $R$-cyclic if and only if they are bi-free from the scalar matrices over the scalar diagonal matrices. Furthermore, the operator-valued bi-free partial $R$-, $S$-, and $T$-transforms are constructed. New proofs of results from free probability are developed in order to facilitate many of these bi-free results.

The Schur-Horn Problem for Normal Operators

We consider the Schur-Horn problem for normal operators in von Neumann algebras, which is the problem of characterizing the possible diagonal values of a given normal operator based on its spectral data. For normal matrices, this problem is well-known to be extremely difficult, and in fact, it remains open for matrices of size greater than $3$. We show that the infinite dimensional version of this problem is more tractable, and establish approximate solutions for normal operators in von Neumann factors of type I$_\infty$, II and III. A key result is an approximation theorem that can be seen as an approximate multivariate analogue of Kadison's Carpenter Theorem.

Freely Independent Random Variables with Non-Atomic Distributions

We examine the distributions of non-commutative polynomials of non-atomic, freely independent random variables. In particular, we obtain an analogue of the Strong Atiyah Conjecture for free groups thus proving that the measure of each atom of any $n \times n$ matricial polynomial of non-atomic, freely independent random variables is an integer multiple of $n^{-1}$. In addition, we show that the Cauchy transform of the distribution of any matricial polynomial of freely independent semicircular variables is algebraic and thus the polynomial has a distribution that is real-analytic except at a finite number of points.

Normal Limits of Nilpotents in C*-Algebras

We will investigate the intersection of the normal operators with the closure of the nilpotent and quasinilpotent operators in various C*-algebras. A complete characterization will be given for type I and type III von Neumann algebras with separable predual and for unital, simple, purely infinite C*-algebras. Some restrictions that prevent normal operators from being limits of quasinilpotent operators will be given. The case of AF C*-algebras will be of particular interest. In addition, the closure of the span of the nilpotent operators and the distance from a projection to the nilpotent operators of various C*-algebras will be examined.

Closed Unitary and Similarity Orbits of Normal Operators in Purely Infinite C*-Algebras

We will investigate the norm closure of the unitary and similarity orbits of normal operators in unital, simple, purely infinite C*-algebras. An operator theoretic proof will be given to the classification of when two normal operators are approximately unitarily equivalent in said algebras with trivial K_1-group. Some upper and lower bounds for the distance between unitary orbits will be obtained based on these methods. In addition, a complete characterization of when one normal operator is in the closed similarity orbit of another normal operator will be given for unital, simple, purely infinite C*-algebras and type III factors with separable predual.

On a Notion of Exactness for Reduced Free Products of C*-Algebras

We will study some modifications to the notion of an exact C*-algebra by replacing the minimal tensor product with the reduced free product. First we will demonstrate how the reduced free product of a short exact sequence of C*-algebras with another C*-algebra may be taken. It will then be demonstrated that this operation preserves exact sequences. We will also establish that adjoining arbitrary k-tuples of operators in a free way behaves well with respect to taking ultrapowers.
