Reconfiguration of Spanning Trees with Degree Constraint or Diameter Constraint

We investigate the complexity of finding a transformation from a given spanning tree in a graph to another given spanning tree in the same graph via a sequence of edge flips. The exchange property of the matroid bases immediately yields that such a transformation always exists if we have no constraints on spanning trees. In this paper, we wish to find a transformation which passes through only spanning trees satisfying some constraint. Our focus is bounding either the maximum degree or the diameter of spanning trees, and we give the following results. The problem with a lower bound on maximum degree is solvable in polynomial time, while the problem with an upper bound on maximum degree is PSPACE-complete. The problem with a lower bound on diameter is NP-hard, while the problem with an upper bound on diameter is solvable in polynomial time.

Decremental Optimization of Dominating Sets Under the Reconfiguration Framework

Given a dominating set, how much smaller a dominating set can we find through elementary operations? Here, we proceed by iterative vertex addition and removal while maintaining the property that the set forms a dominating set of bounded size. This can be seen as the optimization variant of the dominating set reconfiguration problem, where two dominating sets are given and the question is merely whether they can be reached one from another through elementary operations. We show that this problem is PSPACE-complete, even if the input graph is a bipartite graph, a split graph, or has bounded pathwidth. On the positive side, we give linear-time algorithms for cographs, trees and interval graphs. We also study the parameterized complexity of this problem. More precisely, we show that the problem is W[2]-hard when parameterized by the upper bound on the size of an intermediary dominating set. On the other hand, we give fixed-parameter algorithms with respect to the minimum size of a vertex cover, or d+sd+s where dd is the degeneracy and ss is the upper bound of output solution.

Linear transformations between dominating sets in the TAR-model

Given a graph GG and an integer kk, a token addition and removal ({\sf TAR} for short) reconfiguration sequence between two dominating sets DsD_{\sf s} and DtD_{\sf t} of size at most kk is a sequence S=⟨D0=Ds,D1…,Dℓ=Dt⟩S= \langle D_0 = D_{\sf s}, D_1 \ldots, D_\ell = D_{\sf t} \rangle of dominating sets of GG such that any two consecutive dominating sets differ by the addition or deletion of one vertex, and no dominating set has size bigger than kk. We first improve a result of Haas and Seyffarth, by showing that if k=Γ(G)+α(G)−1k=Γ(G)+α(G)-1 (where Γ(G)Γ(G) is the maximum size of a minimal dominating set and α(G)α(G) the maximum size of an independent set), then there exists a linear {\sf TAR} reconfiguration sequence between any pair of dominating sets. We then improve these results on several graph classes by showing that the same holds for KℓK_{\ell}-minor free graph as long as k≥Γ(G)+O(ℓlog⁡ℓ)k \ge Γ(G)+O(\ell \sqrt{\log \ell}) and for planar graphs whenever k≥Γ(G)+3k \ge Γ(G)+3. Finally, we show that if k=Γ(G)+tw(G)+1k=Γ(G)+tw(G)+1, then there also exists a linear transformation between any pair of dominating sets.

Reconfiguration of Spanning Trees with Many or Few Leaves

Let GG be a graph and T1,T2T_1,T_2 be two spanning trees of GG. We say that T1T_1 can be transformed into T2T_2 via an edge flip if there exist two edges e∈T1e \in T_1 and ff in T2T_2 such that T2=(T1∖e)∪fT_2= (T_1 \setminus e) \cup f. Since spanning trees form a matroid, one can indeed transform a spanning tree into any other via a sequence of edge flips, as observed by Ito et al. We investigate the problem of determining, given two spanning trees T1,T2T_1,T_2 with an additional property ΠΠ, if there exists an edge flip transformation from T1T_1 to T2T_2 keeping property ΠΠ all along. First we show that determining if there exists a transformation from T1T_1 to T2T_2 such that all the trees of the sequence have at most kk (for any fixed k≥3k \ge 3) leaves is PSPACE-complete. We then prove that determining if there exists a transformation from T1T_1 to T2T_2 such that all the trees of the sequence have at least kk leaves (where kk is part of the input) is PSPACE-complete even restricted to split, bipartite or planar graphs. We complete this result by showing that the problem becomes polynomial for cographs, interval graphs and when k=n−2k=n-2.
