A Three-parameter Family Of Involutions In The Riordan Group Defined By Orthogonal Polynomials

We show how to define, for every Riordan group element $(g(x), f(x))$, an involution in the Riordan group. More generally, we show that for every pseudo-involution $P$ in the Riordan group, we can define a new involution beginning with an arbitrary element $(g(x), f(x))$ in the Riordan group. We then use this result to show that certain two-parameter families of orthogonal polynomials defined by a Riordan array can lead to involutions in the Riordan group, and we give an explicit form of these involutions.

Jointly Learning Clinical Entities and Relations with Contextual Language Models and Explicit Context

We hypothesize that explicit integration of contextual information into an Multi-task Learning framework would emphasize the significance of context for boosting performance in jointly learning Named Entity Recognition (NER) and Relation Extraction (RE). Our work proves this hypothesis by segmenting entities from their surrounding context and by building contextual representations using each independent segment. This relation representation allows for a joint NER/RE system that achieves near state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on both NER and RE tasks while beating the SOTA RE system at end-to-end NER & RE with a 49.07 F1.

On the inversion of Riordan arrays

Many Riordan arrays play a significant role in algebraic combinatorics. We explore the inversion of Riordan arrays in this context. We give a general construct for the inversion of a Riordan array, and study this in the case of various subgroups of the Riordan group. For instance, we show that the inversion of an ordinary Bell matrix is an exponential Riordan array in the associated subgroup. Examples from combinatorics and algebraic combinatorics illustrate the usefulness of such inversions. We end with a brief look at the inversion of exponential Riordan arrays. A final example places Airey's convergent factor in the context of a simple exponential Riordan array.

Characterizations of the Borel triangle and Borel polynomials

We use Riordan array theory to give characterizations of the Borel triangle and its associated polynomial sequence. We show that the Borel polynomials are the moment sequence for a family of orthogonal polynomials whose coefficient array is a Riordan array. The role of the Catalan matrix in defining the Borel triangle is examined. We generalize the Borel triangle to a family of two parameter triangles. Generating functions are expressed as Jacobi continued fractions, as well as the zeros of appropriate quadratic expressions. The Borel triangle is exhibited as a Hadamard product of matrices. We investigate the reversions of the triangles studied. We introduce the notion of Fuss-Borel triangles and Fuss-Catalan triangles. We end with some remarks on the Catalan triangle.

On a Central Transform of Integer Sequences

We use the concept of the half of a lower-triangular matrix to define a transformation on integer sequences. We explore the properties of this transformation, including in some cases a study of the Hankel transform of the transformed sequences. Starting from simple sequences with elementary rational generating functions, we obtain many sequences of combinatorial significance. We make extensive use of techniques drawn from the theory of Riordan arrays.

On the Central Description of the Group of Riordan Arrays

We provide an alternative description of the group of Riordan arrays, by using two power series of the form $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} g_n x^n$, where $g_0 \ne 0$ to build a typical element of the constructed group. We relate these elements to Riordan arrays in the usual description, showing that each newly constructed element is the vertical half of a "usual" element. The product rules and the construction of the inverse are given in this new description, which we call a "central" description, because of links to the central coefficients of Riordan arrays. This is done for the case of ordinary generating functions. Finally, we briefly look at the exponential case.

Some observations on the Rueppel sequence and associated Hankel determinants

Starting with a definition based on the Catalan numbers, we carry out an empirical study of the Rueppel sequence. We use the Hankel transform as the main technique. By means of this transform we find links to such sequences as the Jacobi sequence and the paper-folding sequence. We also study several number arrays defined by this sequence, which are analogs of the important Catalan triangles of combinatorics. We identify a sequence related to the Golay-Rudin-Shapiro sequence that plays a fundamental role in linking the Hankel transforms of the paper with classical sequences. Examples are given where certain privileged permutations appearing in the Leibnitz formula for determinants have a special role.

On the Group of Almost-Riordan Arrays

We study a super group of the group of Riordan arrays, where the elements of the group are given by a triple of power series. We show that certain subsets are subgroups, and we identify a normal subgroup whose cosets correspond to Riordan arrays. We give an example of an almost-Riordan array that has been studied in the context of Hankel and Hankel plus Toepliz matrices, and we show that suitably chosen almost-Riordan arrays can lead to transformations that have interesting Hankel transform properties.

Comparing two matrices of generalized moments defined by continued fraction expansions

We study two matrices $N$ and $M$ defined by the parameters of equivalent $S$- and $J$-continued fraction expansions, and compare them by examining the product $N^{-1}M$. Using examples based on the Catalan numbers, the little Schröder numbers and powers of $q$, we indicate that this matrix product is an object worthy of study. In the case of the little Schröder numbers, we find that the matrix $N$ has an interleaved structure based on two Riordan arrays.

Laurent Biorthogonal Polynomials and Riordan Arrays

We show that Laurent biorthogonal polynomials whose defining three-term recurrence have constant coefficients have coefficient arrays that are Riordan arrays. For each such family of Laurent biorthogonal polynomials we associate in a natural way a family of orthogonal polynomials. We also extend these results to a notion of generalized orthogonal polynomials whose recurrence depends on three parameters.

On the Hankel transform of C-fractions

We study the Hankel transforms of sequences whose generating function can be expressed as a C-fraction. In particular, we relate the index sequence of the non-zero terms of the Hankel transform to the powers appearing in the monomials defining the C-fraction. A closed formula for the Hankel transforms studied is given. As every power-series can be represented by a C-fraction, this gives in theory a closed form formula for the Hankel transform of any sequence. The notion of multiplicity is introduced to differentiate between Hankel transforms.

An orthogonal polynomial coefficient formula for the Hankel transform

We give an explicit formula for the Hankel transform of a regular sequence in terms of the coefficients of the associated orthogonal polynomials and the sequence itself. We apply this formula to some sequences of combinatorial interest, deriving interesting combinatorial identities by this means. Further insight is also gained into the structure of the Hankel transform of a sequence.

Eulerian polynomials as moments, via exponential Riordan arrays

Using the theory of exponential Riordan arrays and orthogonal polynomials, we demonstrate that the "descending power" Eulerian polynomials, and their once shifted sequence, are moment sequences for simple families of orthogonal polynomials, which we characterize in terms of their three-term recurrence. We obtain the generating functions of the polynomial sequences in terms of continued fractions, and we also calculate their Hankel transforms.

Hankel transform of a sequence obtained by series reversion II - aerating transforms

This paper provides the connection between the Hankel transform and aerating transforms of a given integer sequence. Results obtained are used to establish a completely different Hankel transform evaluation of the series reversion of a certain rational function $Q(x)$ and shifted sequences, recently published in our paper \cite{part1}. For that purpose, we needed to evaluate the Hankel transforms of the sequences $\seqn{α^2 C_n-βC_{n+1}}$ and $\seqn{α^2 C_{n+1}-βC_{n+2}}$, where $C=\seqn{C_n}$ is the well-known sequence of Catalan numbers. This generalizes the results of Cvetkovi\' c, Rajković and Ivković \cite{CRI}. Also, we need the evaluation of Hankel-like determinants whose entries are Catalan numbers $C_n$ and which is based on the recent results of Krattenthaler \cite{krattCat}. The results obtained are general and can be applied to many other Hankel transform evaluations.

Invariant number triangles, eigentriangles and Somos-4 sequences

Using the language of Riordan arrays, we look at two related iterative processes on matrices and determine which matrices are invariant under these processes. In a special case, the invariant sequences that arise are conjectured to have Hankel transforms that obey Somos-4 recurrences. A notion of eigentriangle for a number triangle emerges and examples are given, including a construction of the Takeuchi numbers.

Riordan arrays and the LDU decomposition of symmetric Toeplitz plus Hankel matrices

We examine a result of Basor and Ehrhardt concerning Hankel and Toeplitz plus Hankel matrices, within the context of the Riordan group of lower-triangular matrices. This allows us to determine the LDU decomposition of certain symmetric Toeplitz plus Hankel matrices. We also determine the generating functions and Hankel transforms of associated sequences.
