Expected Precision of Higgs Boson Partial Widths within the Standard Model

We discuss the sources of uncertainty in calculations of the partial widths of the Higgs boson within the Standard Model. The uncertainties come from two sources: the truncation of perturbation theory and the uncertainties in input parameters. We review the current status of perturbative calculations and note that these are already reaching the parts-per-mil level of accuracy for the major decay modes. The main sources of uncertainty will then come from the parametric dependences on alpha_s, m_b, and m_c. Knowledge of these parameters is systematically improvable through lattice gauge theory calculations. We estimate the precision that lattice QCD will achieve in the next decade and the corresponding precision of the Standard Model predictions for Higgs boson partial widths.

Lattice calculation of the zero-recoil form factor of anti-B --> D* lepton anti-neutrino: toward a model independent determination of |V(cb)|

We develop a new method in lattice QCD to calculate the form factor F(1) at zero recoil. This is the main theoretical ingredient needed to determine |V(cb)| from the exclusive decay anti-B --> D* lepton anti-neutrino. We introduce three ratios, in which most of statistical and systematic error cancels, making a precise calculation possible. We fit the heavy-quark mass dependence directly, and extract the 1/m_Q^2 and three of the four 1/m_Q^3 corrections in the heavy-quark expansion. In this paper we show how the method works in the quenched approximation, obtaining F(1) = 0.913 (+0.024-0.017)(+/-0.016)(+0.003-0.014)(+0.000-0.016)(+0.006-0.014) where the uncertainties come, respectively, from statistics and fitting, matching lattice gauge theory to QCD, lattice spacing dependence, light quark mass effects, and the quenched approximation. We also discuss how to reduce these uncertainties and, thus, to obtain a model-independent determination of |V(cb)|.

The Semileptonic Decays $B\toπlν$ and $D\toπlν$ from Lattice QCD

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the form factors and differential decay rates for semileptonic decays of the heavy-light mesons $B$ and $D$ to the final state $πlν$. The results are obtained with three methodological improvements over previous lattice calculations: a matching procedure that reduces heavy-quark lattice artifacts, the first study of lattice-spacing dependence, and the introduction of kinematic cuts to reduce model dependence. We show that the main systematics are controllable (within the quenched approximation) and outline how the calculations could be improved to aid current experiments in the determination of~$|V_{ub}|$ and~$|V_{cd}|$.

B and D Meson Decay Constants in Lattice QCD

We have calculated the decay constants of B and $D$ mesons with lattice QCD. We use an $O(a)$ improved action that takes light quark actions as a starting point, tuned so that it can be directly applied at the physical masses of the $b$ and $c$ quarks. Our results are $f_B = 164 \err{+14}{-11} \pm 8$ MeV, $f_{B_s} = 185 \err{+13}{-8} \pm 9$ MeV, $f_D = 194 \err{+14}{-10} \pm 10$ MeV, and $f_{D_s} = 213 \err{+14}{-11} \pm 11$ MeV in the quenched approximation. The first error in each case is statistical, and the second is from perturbation theory. We show that discretization errors are under control in our approach, and smaller than our statistical errors. The effects of the quenched approximation may raise our quenched result by up to 10%.

Recent Lattice Results on the Light Quark Masses

I discuss old and new determinations of the light quark masses using lattice QCD. Most lattice results using various approximations can be fit together in a simple picture which is consistent with lower values than conventionally supposed: in the quenched approximation for the strange quark mass in the MS bar scheme, m_s(2 GeV) = 95 (16) MeV, and for the average of the u and d quark masses, m_l(2 GeV) = 3.6 (6) MeV. An estimate of the effects of light quark loops yields answers lower still: m_s(2 GeV) in the range 54 - 92 MeV, and m_l(2 GeV) in the range 2.1 - 3.5 MeV.

Status of Lattice QCD

Significant progress has recently been achieved in the lattice gauge theory calculations required for extracting the fundamental parameters of the standard model from experiment. Recent lattice determinations of such quantities as the kaon $B$ parameter, the mass of the $b$ quark, and the strong coupling constant have produced results and uncertainties as good or better than the best conventional determinations. Many other calculations crucial to extracting the fundamental parameters of the standard model from experimental data are undergoing very active development. I review the status of such applications of lattice QCD to standard model phenomenology, and discuss the prospects for the near future.
