A lattice QCD perspective on weak decays of b and c quarks Snowmass 2022 White Paper

Lattice quantum chromodynamics has proven to be an indispensable method to determine nonperturbative strong contributions to weak decay processes. In this white paper for the Snowmass community planning process we highlight achievements and future avenues of research for lattice calculations of weak $b$ and $c$ quark decays, and point out how these calculations will help to address the anomalies currently in the spotlight of the particle physics community. With future increases in computational resources and algorithmic improvements, percent level (and below) lattice determinations will play a central role in constraining the standard model or identifying new physics.

Simulating Quantum Mechanics with a $θ$-term and an 't Hooft Anomaly on a Synthetic Dimension

A topological $θ$-term in gauge theories, including quantum chromodynamics in 3+1 dimensions, gives rise to a sign problem that makes classical Monte Carlo simulations impractical. Quantum simulations are not subject to such sign problems and are a promising approach to studying these theories in the future. In the near term, it is interesting to study simpler models that retain some of the physical phenomena of interest and their implementation on quantum hardware. For example, dimensionally-reducing gauge theories on small spatial tori produces quantum mechanical models which, despite being relatively simple to solve, retain interesting vacuum and symmetry structures from the parent gauge theories. Here we consider quantum mechanical particle-on-a-circle models, related by dimensional reduction to the 1+1d Schwinger model, that possess a $θ$-term and realize an 't Hooft anomaly or global inconsistency at $θ= π$. These models also exhibit the related phenomena of spontaneous symmetry breaking and instanton-anti-instanton interference in real time. We propose an experimental scheme for the real-time simulation of a particle on a circle with a $θ$-term and a $\mathbb{Z}_n$ potential using a synthetic dimension encoded in a Rydberg atom. Simulating the Rydberg atom with realistic experimental parameters, we demonstrate that the essential physics can be well-captured by the experiment, with expected behavior in the tunneling rate as a function of $θ$. Similar phenomena and observables can also arise in more complex quantum mechanical models connected to higher-dimensional nonabelian gauge theories by dimensional reduction.

(1+1)-d U(1) Quantum link models from effective Hamiltonians of dipolar molecules

We study the promising idea of using dipolar molecular systems as analog quantum simulators for quantum link models, which are discrete versions of lattice gauge theories. In a quantum link model the link variables have a finite number of degrees of freedom and discrete values. We construct the effective Hamiltonian of a system of dipolar molecules with electric dipole-dipole interactions, where we use the tunable parameters of the system to match it to the target Hamiltonian describing a U(1) quantum link model in 1+1 dimensions.

Quark Flavor Physics Review

I review the status of lattice-QCD calculations relevant to quark flavor physics. The recent availability of physical-mass ensembles with large physical volumes generated by a growing number of lattice collaborations is an exciting development and I discuss their impact on the landscape of lattice flavor physics calculations. The activities of the newly formed FLAG-2 collaboration which provides averages of quantities calculated in lattice QCD that are relevant for quark flavor physics are also discussed. My talk covers (a subset of) the same quantities reviewed by FLAG-2, including results for $K$, $D_{(s)}$, and $B_{(s)}$ meson decay constants and semileptonic decay form factors, as well as for hadronic matrix elements of neutral ($K$, $D$, and $B_{(s)}$) meson mixing. I also briefly discuss recent progress towards understanding nonleptonic $K$ decay and long-distance contributions to $Δm_K$.

Semileptonic decays $B\rightarrow D^{(*)}lν$ at nonzero recoil

We have analyzed the semileptonic decays $B\rightarrow D\ellν$ and $B\rightarrow D^*\ellν$ on the full suite of MILC (2+1)-flavor asqtad ensembles with lattice spacings as small as 0.045 fm and light-to-strange-quark mass ratios as low as 1/20. We use the Fermilab interpretation of the clover action for heavy valence quarks and the asqtad action for light valence quarks. We compute the hadronic form factors for $B\rightarrow D$ at both zero and nonzero recoil and for $B\rightarrow D^*$ at zero recoil. We report our results for $|V_{cb}|$.

Form factors for $B$ to $Kll$ semileptonic decay from three-flavor lattice QCD

We study the $B \to Kl^+l^-$ semileptonic decay process in three-flavor lattice QCD. We analyze several ensembles generated by the MILC collaboration at different lattice spacings and sea-quark masses. We use the asqtad improved staggered action for the light quarks and the clover action with the Fermilab interpretation for the heavy $b$ quark. We present preliminary results for the vector current induced form factors for a range of kaon energies. Our analysis includes chiral and continuum extrapolations based on SU(2) staggered χPT.

A determination of the B_s^0 and B_d^0 mixing parameters in 2+1 lattice QCD

We report on the advances in our unquenched calculation of the matrix elements relevant for the analysis of B^0-\bar B^0 mixing using the Asqtad (light quark) and Fermilab (heavy quark) actions. We have calculated the hadronic parameters for the mass and width differences in the neutral B meson system. Preliminary results are presented for f_{B_q}^2 B_q as well as for the ratio ξ^2=f_{B_s}^2 B_{B_s}/f_{B_d}^2 B_{B_d}.

The Semileptonic Decays $B\toπlν$ and $D\toπlν$ from Lattice QCD

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the form factors and differential decay rates for semileptonic decays of the heavy-light mesons $B$ and $D$ to the final state $πlν$. The results are obtained with three methodological improvements over previous lattice calculations: a matching procedure that reduces heavy-quark lattice artifacts, the first study of lattice-spacing dependence, and the introduction of kinematic cuts to reduce model dependence. We show that the main systematics are controllable (within the quenched approximation) and outline how the calculations could be improved to aid current experiments in the determination of~$|V_{ub}|$ and~$|V_{cd}|$.

B and D Meson Decay Constants in Lattice QCD

We have calculated the decay constants of B and $D$ mesons with lattice QCD. We use an $O(a)$ improved action that takes light quark actions as a starting point, tuned so that it can be directly applied at the physical masses of the $b$ and $c$ quarks. Our results are $f_B = 164 \err{+14}{-11} \pm 8$ MeV, $f_{B_s} = 185 \err{+13}{-8} \pm 9$ MeV, $f_D = 194 \err{+14}{-10} \pm 10$ MeV, and $f_{D_s} = 213 \err{+14}{-11} \pm 11$ MeV in the quenched approximation. The first error in each case is statistical, and the second is from perturbation theory. We show that discretization errors are under control in our approach, and smaller than our statistical errors. The effects of the quenched approximation may raise our quenched result by up to 10%.

The Self-Energy of Massive Lattice Fermions

We address the perturbative renormalization of massive lattice fermions. We derive expressions-valid to all orders in perturbation theory and for all values of the bare fermion mass-for the rest mass, the kinetic mass, and the wave-function renormalization factor. We obtain the fermion's self energy at the one-loop level with a mass-dependent, $O(a)$ improved action. Numerical results for two interesting special cases, the Wilson and Sheikholeslami-Wohlert actions, are given. The mass dependence of these results smoothly connects the massless and infinite-mass limits, as expected. Combined with Monte Carlo calculations our results can be employed to determine the quark masses in common renormalization schemes.

Properties of Low-Lying Heavy-Light Mesons

We present preliminary results for the B meson decay constant and masses of low-lying heavy-light mesons in the static limit. Calculations were performed on the lattice in the quenched approximation using multistate smearing functions generated from a Hamiltonian for a spinless relativistic quark. The 2S--1S and 1P--1S mass splittings are measured. Using the 1P--1S charmonium splitting to set the overall scale, the ground state decay constant, f_B, is 319 +- 11 (stat) MeV.
