Orbital order in degenerate Hubbard models : A variational study

We use the Gutzwiller variational many-body theory to investigate the stability of orbitally ordered states in a two-band Hubbard-model without spin degrees of freedom. Our results differ significantly from earlier Hartree-Fock calculations for this model. The Hartree-Fock phase diagram displays a large variety of orbital orders. In contrast, in the Gutzwiller approach orbital order only appears for densities in a narrow region around half filling.

Evidence of ferromagnetic quantum phase transition in Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$VS$_3$

Resistivity under pressure and magnetization measurements on Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$VS$_3$ single crystals with 0 $\leq x \leq$ 0.18 and no sulphur deficiency show an abrupt onset of ferromagnetic (FM) order at a critical value $x$=0.07, concomitant to a change of the magnetic properties at the metal-insulator transition (MIT) and to a collapse of the unit cell at ambient temperature. A reduction of the MIT temperature to 50 K upon $x$ that scales as the V-S distance is also observed. This gives evidence of a chemical pressure induced quantum phase transition that stabilizes the incipient FM order of BaVS$_3$. The $0.07<x$ results suggest a coexistence of FM and metallic phases at larger $x$.

Gutzwiller variational theory for the Hubbard model with attractive interaction

We investigate the electronic and superconducting properties of a negative-U Hubbard model. For this purpose we evaluate a recently introduced variational theory based on Gutzwiller-correlated BCS wave functions. We find significant differences between our approach and standard BCS theory, especially for the superconducting gap. For small values of $|U|$, we derive analytical expressions for the order parameter and the superconducting gap which we compare to exact results from perturbation theory.

Low-field octupoles and high-field quadrupoles in URu2Si2

The recent experimental finding of large-amplitude antiferromagnetism induced by uniaxial strain shows that the "hidden" low-field order of URu2Si2 breaks time reversal invariance. We propose a new crystal field model which supports T(beta)z octupolar order in the low-field phase, and quadrupolar order in a disjoint high-field phase. The temperature dependence of the linear and third order magnetic susceptibility is in good agreement with the observed behavior.
