Top-Down Anatomy of Flavor Symmetry Breakdown

A top-down approach to the flavor puzzle leads to eclectic flavor groups which include modular and traditional flavor symmetries. Based on examples of semirealistic T2/Z3 orbifold compactifications of heterotic string theory, we discuss the breakdown patterns of the eclectic flavor group via the interplay of vacuum expectation values (vevs) of moduli and flavon fields. This leads to an attractive flavor scheme with various possibilities to obtain "flavor hierarchies" through the alignment of these vevs. Despite the fact that the top-down approach gives strong restrictions for bottom-up flavor model building, it seems to be well suited to provide a realistic flavor pattern for quarks and leptons.

Siegel modular flavor group and CP from string theory

We derive the potential modular symmetries of heterotic string theory. For a toroidal compactification with Wilson line modulus, we obtain the Siegel modular group $\mathrm{Sp}(4,\mathbb{Z})$ that includes the modular symmetries $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})_T$ and $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})_U$ (of the "geometric" moduli $T$ and $U$) as well as mirror symmetry. In addition, string theory provides a candidate for a CP-like symmetry that enhances the Siegel modular group to $\mathrm{GSp}(4,\mathbb{Z})$.

The eclectic flavor symmetry of the $\boldsymbol{\mathbb{Z}_2}$ orbifold

Modular symmetries naturally combine with traditional flavor symmetries and $\mathcal{CP}$, giving rise to the so-called eclectic flavor symmetry. We apply this scheme to the two-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold, which is equipped with two modular symmetries $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})_T$ and $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})_U$ associated with two moduli: the Kähler modulus $T$ and the complex structure modulus $U$. The resulting finite modular group is $((S_3\times S_3)\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_4)\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ including mirror symmetry (that exchanges $T$ and $U$) and a generalized $\mathcal{CP}$-transformation. Together with the traditional flavor symmetry $(D_8\times D_8)/\mathbb{Z}_2$, this leads to a huge eclectic flavor group with 4608 elements. At specific regions in moduli space we observe enhanced unified flavor symmetries with as many as 1152 elements for the tetrahedral shaped orbifold and $\langle T \rangle = \langle U \rangle = \exp(π\,\mathrm{i}\,/\,3)$. This rich eclectic structure implies interesting (modular) flavor groups for particle physics models derived form string theory.

Eclectic Flavor Groups

The simultaneous study of top-down and bottom-up approaches to modular flavor symmetry leads necessarily to the concept of eclectic flavor groups. These are nontrivial products of modular and traditional flavor symmetries that exhibit the phenomenon of local flavor enhancement in moduli space. We develop methods to determine the eclectic flavor groups that can be consistently associated with a given traditional flavor symmetry. Applying these methods to a large family of prominent traditional flavor symmetries, we try to identify potential candidates for realistic eclectic flavor groups and show that they are relatively rare. Model building with finite modular flavor symmetries thus appears to be much more restrictive than previously thought.

Eclectic flavor scheme from ten-dimensional string theory -- I. Basic results

In a consistent top-down approach based on orbifold compactifications, modular and traditional flavor symmetries combine nontrivially to the so-called eclectic flavor symmetry. We extend this scheme from two extra dimensions, discussed previously, to the six extra dimensions of string theory. By doing so, new insights on the nature of CP and its spontaneous breaking emerge. Moreover, we identify a new interpretation of R-symmetries as unbroken remnants from modular symmetries that are associated with geometrically stabilized complex structure moduli. Hence, all symmetries (i.e. modular, traditional flavor, CP and R) share a common origin in string theory: on a technical level, they are given by outer automorphisms of the Narain space group. The eclectic top-down approach leads to a very restrictive scheme with high predictive power. It remains a challenge to connect this with existing bottom-up constructions of modular flavor symmetry.

Lessons from eclectic flavor symmetries

A top-down approach to the flavor problem motivated from string theory leads to the concept of eclectic flavor groups that combine traditional and modular flavor symmetries. To make contact with models constructed in the bottom-up approach, we analyze a specific example based on the eclectic flavor group Omega(1) (a nontrivial combination of the traditional flavor group Delta(54) and the finite modular group T') in order to extract general lessons from the eclectic scheme. We observe that this scheme is highly predictive since it severely restricts the possible group representations and modular weights of matter fields. Thereby, it controls the structure of the Kaehler potential and the superpotential, which we discuss explicitly. In particular, both Kaehler potential and superpotential are shown to transform nontrivially, but combine to an invariant action. Finally, we find that discrete R-symmetries are intrinsic to eclectic flavor groups.

Predicting the orbifold origin of the MSSM

MSSM-like string models from the compactification of the heterotic string on toroidal orbifolds (of the kind $T^6/P$) have distinct phenomenological properties, like the spectrum of vector-like exotics, the scale of supersymmetry breaking, and the existence of non-Abelian flavor symmetries. We show that these characteristics depend crucially on the choice of the underlying orbifold point group $P$. In detail, we use boosted decision trees to predict $P$ from phenomenological properties of MSSM-like orbifold models. As this works astonishingly well, we can utilize machine learning to predict the orbifold origin of the MSSM.

String scale interacting dark matter from $π_1$

We show that in a wide class of string derived models of particle physics, heavy string modes with masses around the GUT scale can serve as a viable dark matter candidate. These heavy string modes wind around specific cycles in the extra-dimensional space, closely related to the fundamental group $π_1$. As a consequence of a non-trivial $π_1$, there is an exact discrete symmetry that stabilizes such winding strings. The dark matter candidate couples to the Standard Model via gravity and via the exchange of heavy string states. We find that, for reasonable values of the string coupling, our dark matter candidate can be produced in sizable amounts via freeze-in. Our scheme applies to many string constructions, including Calabi-Yau compactifications, and can be tested against constraints from the CMB.

Contrast data mining for the MSSM from strings

We apply techniques from data mining to the heterotic orbifold landscape in order to identify new MSSM-like string models. To do so, so-called contrast patterns are uncovered that help to distinguish between areas in the landscape that contain MSSM-like models and the rest of the landscape. First, we develop these patterns in the well-known $\mathbb{Z}_6$-II orbifold geometry and then we generalize them to all other $\mathbb{Z}_N$ orbifold geometries. Our contrast patterns have a clear physical interpretation and are easy to check for a given string model. Hence, they can be used to scale down the potentially interesting area in the landscape, which significantly enhances the search for MSSM-like models. Thus, by deploying the knowledge gain from contrast mining into a new search algorithm we create many novel MSSM-like models, especially in corners of the landscape that were hardly accessible by the conventional search algorithm, for example, MSSM-like $\mathbb{Z}_6$-II models with $Δ(54)$ flavor symmetry.

Infinite number of MSSMs from heterotic line bundles?

We consider heterotic E8xE8 supergravity compactified on smooth Calabi-Yau manifolds with line bundle gauge backgrounds. Infinite sets of models that satisfy the Bianchi identities and flux quantization conditions can be constructed by letting their background flux quanta grow without bound. Even though we do not have a general proof, we find that all examples are at the boundary of the theory's validity: the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau equations, which can be thought of as vanishing D-term conditions, cannot be satisfied inside the Kaehler cone unless a growing number of scalar Vacuum Expectation Values (VEVs) is switched on. As they are charged under various line bundles simultaneously, the gauge background gets deformed by these VEVs to a non-Abelian bundle. In general, our physical expectation is that such infinite sets of models should be impossible, since they never seem to occur in exact CFT constructions.

Singlet extensions of the MSSM with Z_4^R symmetry

We discuss singlet extensions of the MSSM with $\Z4^R$ symmetry. We show that holomorphic zeros can avoid a potentially large coefficient of the term linear in the singlet. The emerging model has both an effective mu term and a supersymmetric mass term for the singlet mu_N which are controlled by the gravitino mass. The mu term turns out to be suppressed against mu_N by about one or two orders of magnitude. We argue that this class of models might provide us with a solution to the little hierarchy problem of the MSSM.

Geography of Fields in Extra Dimensions: String Theory Lessons for Particle Physics

String theoretical ideas might be relevant for particle physics model building. Ideally one would hope to find a unified theory of all fundamental interactions. There are only few consistent string theories in D=10 or 11 space-time dimensions, but a huge landscape in D=4. We have to explore this landscape to identify models that describe the known phenomena of particle physics. Properties of compactified six spatial dimensions are crucial in that respect. We postulate some useful rules to investigate this landscape and construct realistic models. We identify common properties of the successful models and formulate lessons for further model building.

Heterotic non-Abelian orbifolds

We perform the first systematic analysis of particle spectra obtained from heterotic string compactifications on non-Abelian toroidal orbifolds. After developing a new technique to compute the particle spectrum in the case of standard embedding based on higher dimensional supersymmetry, we compute the Hodge numbers for all recently classified 331 non-Abelian orbifold geometries which yield N=1 supersymmetry for heterotic compactifications. Surprisingly, most Hodge numbers follow the empiric pattern h^(1,1) - h^(2,1) = 0 mod 6, which might be related to the number of three standard model generations. Furthermore, we study the fundamental groups in order to identify the possibilities for non-local gauge symmetry breaking. Three examples are discussed in detail: the simplest non-Abelian orbifold S_3 and two more elaborate examples, T_7 and Δ(27), which have only one untwisted Kaehler and no untwisted complex structure modulus. Such models might be especially interesting in the context of no-scale supergravity. Finally, we briefly discuss the case of orbifolds with vanishing Euler numbers in the context of enhanced (spontaneously broken) supersymmetry.

Schoen manifold with line bundles as resolved magnetized orbifolds

We give an alternative description of the Schoen manifold as the blow-up of a Z2xZ2 orbifold in which one Z2 factor acts as a roto-translation. Since for this orbifold the fixed tori are only identified in pairs but not orbifolded, four-dimensional chirality can never be obtained in heterotic string compactifications using standard techniques alone. However, chirality is recovered when its tori become magnetized. To exemplify this, we construct an E8xE8' heterotic SU(5) GUT on the Schoen manifold with Abelian gauge fluxes, which becomes an MSSM with three generations after an appropriate Wilson line is associated to its freely acting involution. We reproduce this model as a standard heterotic orbifold CFT of the (partially) blown down Schoen manifold with a magnetic flux. Finally, in analogy to a proposal for non--perturbative heterotic models by Aldazabal et al. we suggest modifications to the heterotic orbifold spectrum formulae in the presence of magnetized tori.

Classification of symmetric toroidal orbifolds

We provide a complete classification of six-dimensional symmetric toroidal orbifolds which yield N>=1 supersymmetry in 4D for the heterotic string. Our strategy is based on a classification of crystallographic space groups in six dimensions. We find in total 520 inequivalent toroidal orbifolds, 162 of them with Abelian point groups such as Z_3, Z_4, Z_6-I etc. and 358 with non-Abelian point groups such as S_3, D_4, A_4 etc. We also briefly explore the properties of some orbifolds with Abelian point groups and N=1, i.e. specify the Hodge numbers and comment on the possible mechanisms (local or non-local) of gauge symmetry breaking.

Origin of family symmetries

Discrete (family) symmetries might play an important role in models of elementary particle physics. We discuss the origin of such symmetries in the framework of consistent ultraviolet completions of the standard model in field and string theory. The symmetries can arise due to special geometrical properties of extra compact dimensions and the localization of fields in this geometrical landscape. We also comment on anomaly constraints for discrete symmetries.

String Constraints on Discrete Symmetries in MSSM Type II Quivers

We study the presence of discrete gauge symmetries in D-brane semi-realistic compactifications. After establishing the constraints on the transformation behaviour of the chiral matter for the presence of a discrete gauge symmetry we perform a systematic search for discrete gauge symmetries within local semi-realistic D-brane realizations, based on four D-brane stacks, of the MSSM and the MSSM with three right-handed neutrinos. The systematic search reveals that Proton hexality, a discrete symmetry which ensures the absence of R-parity violating terms as well as the absence of dangerous dimension 5 proton decay operators, is only rarely realized. Moreover, none of the semi-realistic local D-brane configurations exhibit any family dependent discrete gauge symmetry.

The mu term and neutrino masses

The well-known Giudice-Masiero mechanism explains the presence of a mu term of the order of the gravitino mass, but does not explain why the holomorphic mass term is absent in the superpotential. We discuss anomaly-free discrete symmetries which are both compatible with SU(5) unification of matter and the Giudice-Masiero mechanism, i.e. forbid the mu term in the superpotential while allowing the necessary Kaehler potential term. We find that these are Z_M^R symmetries with the following properties: (i) M is a multiple of four; (ii) the Higgs bilinear H_u H_d transforms trivially; (iii) the superspace coordinate theta has charge M/4 and, accordingly, the superpotential has charge M/2; (iv) dimension five proton decay operators are automatically absent. All Z_M^R symmetries are anomaly-free due to a non-trivial transformation of a Green-Schwarz axion, and, as a consequence, a holomorphic mu term appears at the non-perturbative level. There is a unique symmetry that is consistent with the Weinberg operator while there is a class of Z_M^R symmetries which explain suppressed Dirac neutrino masses.

Discrete R symmetries for the MSSM and its singlet extensions

We determine the anomaly free discrete R symmetries, consistent with the MSSM, that commute with SU(5) and suppress the $μ$ parameter and nucleon decay. We show that the order M of such $Z_M^R$ symmetries has to divide 24 and identify 5 viable symmetries. The simplest possibility is a $Z_4^R$ symmetry which commutes with SO(10). We present a string-derived model with this $Z_4^R$ symmetry and the exact MSSM spectrum below the GUT scale; in this model $Z_4^R$ originates from the Lorentz symmetry of compactified dimensions. We extend the discussion to include the singlet extensions of the MSSM and find $Z_4^R$ and $Z_8^R$ are the only possible symmetries capable of solving the $μ$ problem in the NMSSM. We also show that a singlet extension of the MSSM based on a $Z_{24}^R$ symmetry can provide a simultaneous solution to the $μ$ and strong CP problem with the axion coupling in the favoured window.

No-go theorems for R symmetries in four-dimensional GUTs

We prove that it is impossible to construct a grand unified model, based on a simple gauge group, in four dimensions that leads to the exact MSSM, nor to a singlet extension, and possesses an unbroken R symmetry. This implies that no MSSM model with either a Z_{M>=3}^R or U(1)_R symmetry can be completed by a four-dimensional GUT in the ultraviolet. However, our no-go theorem does not apply to GUT models with extra dimensions. We also show that it is impossible to construct a 4D GUT that leads to the MSSM plus an additional anomaly-free symmetry that forbids the mu term.

The Orbifolder: A Tool to study the Low Energy Effective Theory of Heterotic Orbifolds

The orbifolder is a program developed in C++ that computes and analyzes the low-energy effective theory of heterotic orbifold compactifications. The program includes routines to compute the massless spectrum, to identify the allowed couplings in the superpotential, to automatically generate large sets of orbifold models, to identify phenomenologically interesting models (e.g. MSSM-like models) and to analyze their vacuum-configurations.

A unique Z_4^R symmetry for the MSSM

We consider the possible anomaly free Abelian discrete symmetries of the MSSM that forbid the mu-term at perturbative order. Allowing for anomaly cancellation via the Green-Schwarz mechanism we identify discrete R-symmetries as the only possibility and prove that there is a unique Z_4^R symmetry that commutes with SO(10). We argue that non-perturbative effects will generate a mu-term of electroweak order thus solving the mu-problem. The non-perturbative effects break the Z_4^R symmetry leaving an exact Z_2 matter parity. As a result dimension four baryon- and lepton-number violating operators are absent while, at the non-perturbative level, dimension five baryon- and lepton-number violating operators get induced but are highly suppressed so that the nucleon decay rate is well within present bounds.

An involuted orbifold MSSM

A compactification of the E_8 x E_8 heterotic string on a Z_2 x Z_2 orbifold equipped with an additional freely acting involution is presented. This model reproduces the exact chiral MSSM spectrum with matter parity and a non-trivial Yukawa structure. The key ingredient is a freely acting Wilson line associated to the involution, breaking SU(5) to SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1)_Y. This work is based on a talk given at the "9th Hellenic School and Workshop on Elementary Particle Physics and Gravity" and reviews the results of a collaboration with M. Blaszczyk, S. Groot Nibbelink, M. Ratz, F. Ruehle and M. Trapletti.

Heterotic mini-landscape (II): completing the search for MSSM vacua in a Z_6 orbifold

We complete our search for MSSM vacua in the Z_6-II heterotic orbifold by including models with 3 Wilson lines. We estimate the total number of inequivalent models in this orbifold to be 10^7. Out of these, we find almost 300 models with the exact MSSM spectrum, gauge coupling unification and a heavy top quark. Models with these features originate predominantly from local GUTs. The scale of gaugino condensation in the hidden sector is correlated with properties of the observable sector such that soft masses in the TeV range are preferred.

Heterotic MSSM on a Resolved Orbifold

We construct an MSSM with three generations from the heterotic string compactified on a smooth 6D internal manifold using Abelian gauge fluxes only. The compactification space is obtained as a resolution of the T6/Z2xZ2xZ2-free orbifold. The Z2-free involution of such a resolution breaks the SU(5) GUT group down to the SM gauge group using a suitably chosen (freely acting) Wilson line. Surprisingly, the spectrum on a given resolution is larger than the one on the corresponding orbifold taking into account the branching and Higgsing due to the blow-up modes. The existence of extra resolution states is closely related to the fact that the resolution procedure is not unique. Rather, the various resolutions are connected to each other by flop transitions.

String-derived MSSM vacua with residual R symmetries

Recently it was shown that there is a unique Z_4^R symmetry for the MSSM which allows the Yukawa couplings and dimension five neutrino mass operator, forbids the mu term and commutes with SO(10). This Z_4^R symmetry contains matter parity as a subgroup and forbids dimension four and five proton decay operators. We show how to construct string vacua with discrete R symmetries in general and this symmetry in particular, and present an explicit example which exhibits the exact MSSM spectrum, the Z_4^R symmetry as well as other desired features such as gauge-top unification. We introduce the Hilbert basis method for determining all D-flat configurations and efficient algorithms for identifying field configurations with a desired residual symmetry. These methods are used in an explicit example, in which we describe in detail how to construct a supersymmetric vacuum configuration with the phenomenologically attractive Z_4^R symmetry. At the perturbative level, this is a supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum in which almost all singlet fields (moduli) are fixed.

A Z2xZ2 standard model

We present a Z_2 x Z_2 orbifold compactification of the E_8 x E_8 heterotic string which gives rise to the exact chiral MSSM spectrum. The GUT breaking SU(5) to SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y is realized by modding out a freely acting symmetry. This ensures precision gauge coupling unification. Further, it allows us to break the GUT group without switching on flux in hypercharge direction, such that the standard model gauge bosons can remain massless when the orbifold singularities are blown up. The model has vacuum configurations with matter parity, a large top Yukawa coupling and other phenomenologically appealing features.

Accions

Axion fields provide the most elegant solution to the strong CP problem. In string compactifications it is difficult to obtain an axion whose decay constant is consistent with current cosmological bounds. We examine this question in theories with accidental U(1) symmetries that appear as low energy remnants of discrete symmetries. We refer to the axion-like particles from the spontaneous breakdown of these symmetries as accions. In such systems, the accion decay constant depends on the vacuum configuration and can be lowered to fit the bounds. Furthermore, we find that such accions with consistent decay constant can be embedded in special vacua of Z_6-II orbifold models with realistic features.

Local Grand Unification and String Theory

The low energy effective action of string theory depends strongly on the process of compactification and the localization of fields in extra dimensions. Explicit string constructions towards the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) reveal interesting results leading to the concept of local grand unification. Properties of the MSSM indicate that we might live at a special location close to an orbifold fixed point rather than a generic point in Calabi-Yau moduli space. We observe an enhancement of (discrete) symmetries that have various implications for the properties of the MSSM such as proton stability as well as solutions to the flavor problem, the μ-problem and the strong CP-problem.

Mirage Torsion

Z_NxZ_M orbifold models admit the introduction of a discrete torsion phase. We find that models with discrete torsion have an alternative description in terms of torsionless models. More specifically, discrete torsion can be 'gauged away' by changing the shifts by lattice vectors. Similarly, a large class of the so-called generalized discrete torsion phases can be traded for changing the background fields (Wilson lines) by lattice vectors. We further observe that certain models with generalized discrete torsion are equivalent to torsionless models with the same gauge embedding but based on different compactification lattices. We also present a method of classifying heterotic Z_NxZ_M orbifolds.

Exploring the SO(32) Heterotic String

We give a complete classification of Z_N orbifold compactification of the heterotic SO(32) string theory and show its potential for realistic model building. The appearance of spinor representations of SO(2n) groups is analyzed in detail. We conclude that the heterotic SO(32) string constitutes an interesting part of the string landscape both in view of model constructions and the question of heterotic-type I duality.
