(MS)SM-like models on smooth Calabi-Yau manifolds from all three heterotic string theories

We perform model searches on smooth Calabi-Yau compactifications for both the supersymmetric E8xE8 and SO(32) as well as for the non-supersymmetric SO(16)xSO(16) heterotic strings simultaneously. We consider line bundle backgrounds on both favorable CICYs with relatively small h_11 and the Schoen manifold. Using Gram matrices we systematically analyze the combined consequences of the Bianchi identities and the tree-level Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau equations inside the Kahler cone. In order to evaluate the model building potential of the three heterotic theories on the various geometries, we perform computer-aided scans. We have generated a large number of GUT-like models (up to over a few hundred thousand on the various geometries for the three heterotic theories) which become (MS)SM-like upon using a freely acting Wilson line. For all three heterotic theories we present tables and figures summarizing the potentially phenomenologically interesting models which were obtained during our model scans.

Calabi-Yau compactifications of non-supersymmetric heterotic string theory

Phenomenological explorations of heterotic strings have conventionally focused primarily on the E8xE8 theory. We consider smooth compactifications of all three ten-dimensional heterotic theories to exhibit the many similarities between the non-supersymmetric SO(16)xSO(16) theory and the related supersymmetric E8xE8 and SO(32) theories. In particular, we exploit these similarities to determine the bosonic and fermionic spectra of Calabi-Yau compactifications with line bundles of the non-supersymmetric string. We use elements of four-dimensional supersymmetric effective field theory to characterize the non-supersymmetric action at leading order and determine the Green-Schwarz induced axion-couplings. Using these methods we construct a non-supersymmetric Standard Model(SM)-like theory. In addition, we show that it is possible to obtain SM-like models from the standard embedding using at least an order four Wilson line. Finally, we make a proposal of the states that live on five branes in the SO(16)xSO(16) theory and find under certain assumptions the surprising result that anomaly factorization only admits at most a single brane solution.

Line bundle embeddings for heterotic theories

In heterotic string theories consistency requires the introduction of a non-trivial vector bundle. This bundle breaks the original ten-dimensional gauge groups $\text{E}_8\times\text{E}_8$ or $\text{SO}(32)$ for the supersymmetric heterotic string theories and $\text{SO}(16) \times \text{SO}(16)$ for the non-supersymmetric tachyon-free theory to smaller subgroups. A vast number of MSSM-like models have been constructed up to now, most of which describe the vector bundle as a sum of line bundles. However, there are several different ways of describing these line bundles and their embedding in the ten-dimensional gauge group. We recall and extend these different descriptions and explain how they can be translated into each other.

Twisted superspace: Non-renormalization and fermionic symmetries in certain (heterotic string inspired) non-supersymmetric field theories

Inspired by the tachyon-free non-supersymmetric heterotic SO(16)xSO(16) string we consider a special class of non-supersymmetric field theories: Those that can be obtained from supersymmetric field theories by supersymmetry breaking twists. We argue that such theories, like their supersymmetric counter parts, may still possess some fermionic symmetries as left-overs of the super gauge transformations and have special one-loop non-renormalization properties due to holomorphicity. In addition, we extend the supergraph techniques to these theories to calculate some explicit supersymmetry-breaking corrections.

Infinite number of MSSMs from heterotic line bundles?

We consider heterotic E8xE8 supergravity compactified on smooth Calabi-Yau manifolds with line bundle gauge backgrounds. Infinite sets of models that satisfy the Bianchi identities and flux quantization conditions can be constructed by letting their background flux quanta grow without bound. Even though we do not have a general proof, we find that all examples are at the boundary of the theory's validity: the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau equations, which can be thought of as vanishing D-term conditions, cannot be satisfied inside the Kaehler cone unless a growing number of scalar Vacuum Expectation Values (VEVs) is switched on. As they are charged under various line bundles simultaneously, the gauge background gets deformed by these VEVs to a non-Abelian bundle. In general, our physical expectation is that such infinite sets of models should be impossible, since they never seem to occur in exact CFT constructions.

Model building with the non-supersymmetric heterotic SO(16)xSO(16) string

In this talk we review recent investigations of the non-supersymmetric heterotic SO(16)xSO(16) string on orbifolds and smooth Calabi-Yaus. Using such supersymmetry preserving backgrounds allows one to re-employ commonly known model building techniques. We will argue that tachyons do not appear on smooth Calabi-Yaus to leading order in alpha' and g_s. Twisted tachyons may arise on singular orbifolds, where some of these approximations break down. However, they get lifted in full blow-up. Finally, we show that model searches is viable by identifying over 12,000 of SM-like models on various orbifold geometries.

Non-supersymmetric heterotic model building

We investigate orbifold and smooth Calabi-Yau compactifications of the non-supersymmetric heterotic SO(16)xSO(16) string. We focus on such Calabi-Yau backgrounds in order to recycle commonly employed techniques, like index theorems and cohomology theory, to determine both the fermionic and bosonic 4D spectra. We argue that the N=0 theory never leads to tachyons on smooth Calabi-Yaus in the large volume approximation. As twisted tachyons may arise on certain singular orbifolds, we conjecture that such tachyonic states are lifted in the full blow-up. We perform model searches on selected orbifold geometries. In particular, we construct an explicit example of a Standard Model-like theory with three generations and a single Higgs field.

Renormalization of a Lorentz invariant doubled worldsheet theory

Manifestly T-duality covariant worldsheet string models can be constructed by doubling the coordinate fields. We describe the underlying gauge symmetry of a recently proposed Lorentz invariant doubled worldsheet theory that makes half of the worldsheet degrees of freedom redundant. By shifting the Lagrange multiplier, that enforces the gauge fixing condition, the worldsheet action can be cast into various guises. We investigate the renormalization of this theory using a non-linear background / quantum split by employing a normal coordinate expansion adapted to the gauge-fixed theory. The propagator of the doubled coordinates contains a projection operator encoding that half of them do not propagate. We determine the doubled target space equations of motion by requiring one-loop Weyl invariance. Some of them are generalizations of the conventional sigma model beta-functions, while others seem to be novel to the doubled theory: In particular, a dilaton equation seems related to the strong constraint of double field theory. However, the other target space field equations are not identical to those of double field theory.

Torus partition functions and spectra of gauged linear sigma models

Worldsheet (0,2) gauged linear sigma models are often used to study supersymmetric heterotic string compactifications with non-trivial vector bundles. We make use of supersymmetric localization techniques to determine their one-loop partition functions. In particular we derive conditions which ensure that the full partition function is modular invariant and we propose a method to determine the massless and massive target space matter spectrum.

Heterotic warped Eguchi-Hanson spectra with five-branes and line bundles

We consider heterotic strings on a warped Eguchi-Hanson space with five-brane and line bundle gauge fluxes. The heterotic string admits an exact CFT description in terms of an asymmetrically gauged SU(2)xSL(2,R) WZW model, in a specific double scaling limit in which the blow-up radius and the string scale are sent to zero simultaneously. This allows us to compute the perturbative 6D spectra for these models in two independent fashions: i) Within the supergravity approximation we employ a representation dependent index; ii) In the double scaling limit we determine all marginal vertex operators of the coset CFT. To achieve agreement between the supergravity and the CFT spectra, we conjecture that the untwisted and the twisted CFT states correspond to the same set of hyper multiplets in supergravity. This is in a similar spirit as a conjectured duality between asymptotically linear dilaton CFTs and little string theory living on NS-five-branes. As the five-brane charge is non-vanishing, heterotic (anti-)five-branes have to be added in order to cancel irreducible gauge anomalies. The local spectra can be combined in such a way that supersymmetry is preserved on the compact resolved T^4/Z_2 orbifold by choosing the local gauge fluxes appropriately.

MSSM-like models on Z(8) toroidal orbifolds

We extend the promising heterotic string searches for MSSM-like models to Z_8 orbifolds. There exist five inequivalent Z_8 toroidal orbifolds distinguished by two types of twists that act on five different torus lattices; one of which cannot be represented as a Lie-algebra root lattice. Contrary to previous investigations, we study the consequences of the different underlying orbifold torus lattices. Therefore, rather than focussing on one particular geometry, we perform systematic model searches on these five Z_8 orbifolds simultaneously, taking all possible inequivalent SU(5) and SO(10) gauge shifts as our starting point. We present cumulative Tables and Figures comparing the chiral SM and vector-like exotic spectra on these geometries.

Schoen manifold with line bundles as resolved magnetized orbifolds

We give an alternative description of the Schoen manifold as the blow-up of a Z2xZ2 orbifold in which one Z2 factor acts as a roto-translation. Since for this orbifold the fixed tori are only identified in pairs but not orbifolded, four-dimensional chirality can never be obtained in heterotic string compactifications using standard techniques alone. However, chirality is recovered when its tori become magnetized. To exemplify this, we construct an E8xE8' heterotic SU(5) GUT on the Schoen manifold with Abelian gauge fluxes, which becomes an MSSM with three generations after an appropriate Wilson line is associated to its freely acting involution. We reproduce this model as a standard heterotic orbifold CFT of the (partially) blown down Schoen manifold with a magnetic flux. Finally, in analogy to a proposal for non--perturbative heterotic models by Aldazabal et al. we suggest modifications to the heterotic orbifold spectrum formulae in the presence of magnetized tori.

A Lorentz invariant doubled worldsheet theory

We propose a Lorentz invariant version of Tseytlin's doubled worldsheet theory that makes T-duality covariance of the string manifest. This theory can be derived as a gauge fixed version of Buscher's gauging procedure, in which the left-over gauge field component acts as a Lagrange multiplier. This description can naturally account for fractional linear O(D,D) transformations of the metric and b-field. It is capable of describing non-geometric backgrounds; geometric and non-geometric fluxes are encoded in the doubled anti-symmetric tensor field strength.

Super Weyl invariance: BPS equations from heterotic worldsheets

It is well-known that the beta functions on a string worldsheet correspond to the target space equations of motion, e.g. the Einstein equations. We show that the BPS equations, i.e. the conditions of vanishing supersymmetry variations of the space-time fermions, can be directly derived from the worldsheet. To this end we consider the RNS-formulation of the heterotic string with (2,0) supersymmetry, which describes a complex torsion target space that supports a holomorphic vector bundle. After a detailed account of its quantization and renormalization, we establish that the cancellation of the Weyl anomaly combined with (2,0) finiteness implies the heterotic BPS conditions: At the one loop level the geometry is required to be conformally balanced and the gauge background has to satisfy the Hermitean Yang-Mills equations.

Gauged Linear Sigma Models for toroidal orbifold resolutions

Toroidal orbifolds and their resolutions are described within the framework of (2,2) Gauged Linear Sigma Models (GLSMs). Our procedure describes two-tori as hypersurfaces in (weighted) projective spaces. The description is chosen such that the orbifold singularities correspond to the zeros of their homogeneous coordinates. The individual orbifold singularities are resolved using a GLSM guise of non-compact toric resolutions, i.e. replacing discrete orbifold actions by Abelian worldsheet gaugings. Given that we employ the same global coordinates for both the toroidal orbifold and its resolutions, our GLSM formalism confirms the gluing procedure on the level of divisors discussed by Lust et al. Using our global GLSM description we can study the moduli space of such toroidal orbifolds as a whole. In particular, changes in topology can be described as phase transitions of the underlying GLSM. Finally, we argue that certain partially resolvable GLSMs, in which a certain number of fixed points can never be resolved, might be useful for the study of mini-landscape orbifold MSSMs.

Green-Schwarz Mechanism in Heterotic (2,0) Gauged Linear Sigma Models: Torsion and NS5 Branes

Heterotic string compactifications can be conveniently described in the language of (2,0) gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs). Such models allow for Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI)-terms, which can be interpreted as Kahler parameters and axions on the target space geometry. We show that field dependent non-gauge invariant FI-terms lead to a Green-Schwarz-like mechanism on the worldsheet which can be used to cancel worldsheet anomalies. However, given that these FI-terms are constrained by quantization conditions due to worldsheet gauge instantons, the anomaly conditions turn out to be still rather constraining. Field dependent non-gauge invariant FI-terms result in non-Kahler, i.e. torsional, target spaces in general. When FI-terms involve logarithmic terms, the GLSM seems to describe the heterotic string in the presence of Neveu-Schwarz (NS)5 branes. In particular, when the gauge bundle overcloses the Bianchi identities, the GLSM describes a decompactified target space geometry due to anti-NS5 branes.

Heterotic orbifold resolutions as (2,0) gauged linear sigma models

In this work we attempt to bridge the gap between heterotic orbifold models and Calabi-Yau compactifications using gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) with (2,0) worldsheet supersymmetry. We associate a specific GLSM to a heterotic orbifold model with twisted states that have non-vanishing vacuum expectation values (VEVs): The charges of the GLSM superfields are essentially determined by the shifted momenta of these states. When a twisted state contains an oscillator excitation, a fermionic gauging is introduced on the worldsheet inducing a non-Abelian gauge bundle, e.g. the standard embedding. However, irrespectively of whether the twisted states contain oscillators or not, they can be interpreted as blow-up modes, as their VEVs are correlated with sizes of exceptional cycles in the resolved geometry. By considering marginal deformations of a GLSM in the large volume limit we are able to directly determine its effective four dimensional spectrum. In the cases considered the spectra coincide with those computed via index theorems.

Heterotic MSSM on a Resolved Orbifold

We construct an MSSM with three generations from the heterotic string compactified on a smooth 6D internal manifold using Abelian gauge fluxes only. The compactification space is obtained as a resolution of the T6/Z2xZ2xZ2-free orbifold. The Z2-free involution of such a resolution breaks the SU(5) GUT group down to the SM gauge group using a suitably chosen (freely acting) Wilson line. Surprisingly, the spectrum on a given resolution is larger than the one on the corresponding orbifold taking into account the branching and Higgsing due to the blow-up modes. The existence of extra resolution states is closely related to the fact that the resolution procedure is not unique. Rather, the various resolutions are connected to each other by flop transitions.

A Z2xZ2 standard model

We present a Z_2 x Z_2 orbifold compactification of the E_8 x E_8 heterotic string which gives rise to the exact chiral MSSM spectrum. The GUT breaking SU(5) to SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y is realized by modding out a freely acting symmetry. This ensures precision gauge coupling unification. Further, it allows us to break the GUT group without switching on flux in hypercharge direction, such that the standard model gauge bosons can remain massless when the orbifold singularities are blown up. The model has vacuum configurations with matter parity, a large top Yukawa coupling and other phenomenologically appealing features.

Non-Abelian bundles on heterotic non-compact K3 orbifold blowups

Instantons on Eguchi-Hanson spaces provide explicit examples of stable bundles on non-compact four dimensional C^2/Z_n orbifold resolutions with non-Abelian structure groups. With this at hand, we can consider compactifications of ten dimensional SO(32) supergravity (arising as the low energy limit of the heterotic string) on the resolved spaces in the presence of non-Abelian bundles. We provide explicit examples in the resolved C^2/Z_3 case, and give a complete classification of all possible effective six dimensional models where the instantons are combined with Abelian gauge fluxes in order to fulfil the local Bianchi identity constraint. We compare these models with the corresponding C^2/Z_3 orbifold models, and find that all of these gauge backgrounds can be related to configurations of vacuum expectation values (VEV's) of twisted and sometimes untwisted states. Gauge groups and spectra are identical from both the orbifold and the smooth bundle perspectives.

Two loop effective kaehler potential of (non-)renormalizable supersymmetric models

We perform a supergraph computation of the effective Kaehler potential at one and two loops for general four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric theories described by arbitrary Kaehler potential, superpotential and gauge kinetic function. We only insist on gauge invariance of the Kaehler potential and the superpotential as we heavily rely on its consequences in the quantum theory. However, we do not require gauge invariance for the gauge kinetic functions, so that our results can also be applied to anomalous theories that involve the Green-Schwarz mechanism. We illustrate our two loop results by considering a few simple models: the (non-)renormalizable Wess-Zumino model and Super Quantum Electrodynamics.

Heterotic SO(32) model building in four dimensions

Four dimensional heterotic SO(32) orbifold models are classified systematically with model building applications in mind. We obtain all Z3, Z7 and Z2N models based on vectorial gauge shifts. The resulting gauge groups are reminiscent of those of type-I model building, as they always take the form SO(2n_0)xU(n_1)x...xU(n_{N-1})xSO(2n_N). The complete twisted spectrum is determined simultaneously for all orbifold models in a parametric way depending on n_0,...,n_N, rather than on a model by model basis. This reveals interesting patterns in the twisted states: They are always built out of vectors and anti--symmetric tensors of the U(n) groups, and either vectors or spinors of the SO(2n) groups. Our results may shed additional light on the S-duality between heterotic and type-I strings in four dimensions. As a spin-off we obtain an SO(10) GUT model with four generations from the Z4 orbifold.

Chiral gravity as a covariant formulation of massive gravity

We present a covariant nonlinear completion of the Fierz-Pauli (FP) mass term for the graviton. The starting observation is that the FP mass is immediately obtained by expanding the cosmological constant term, i.e. the determinant of the vielbein, around Minkowski space to second order in the vielbein perturbations. Since this is an unstable expansion in the standard case, we consider an extended theory of gravity which describes two vielbeins that give rise to chiral spin--connections (consequently, fermions of a definite chirality only couple to one of the gravitational sectors). As for Einstein gravity with a cosmological constant, a single fine-tuning is needed to recover a Minkowski background; the two sectors then differ only by a constant conformal factor. The spectrum of this theory consists of a massless and a massive graviton, with FP mass term. The theory possesses interesting limits in which only the massive graviton is coupled to matter at the linearized level.

Lorentz Violating Supersymmetric Quantum Electrodynamics

Theory of Supersymmetric Quantum Electrodynamics is extended by interactions with external vector and tensor backgrounds, that are assumed to be generated by some Lorentz-violating (LV) dynamics at an ultraviolet scale perhaps related to the Planck scale. Exact supersymmetry requires that such interactions correspond to LV operators of dimension five or higher, providing a solution to the naturalness problem in the LV sector. We classify all dimension five and six LV operators, analyze their properties at the quantum level and describe observational consequences of LV in this theory. We show that LV operators do not induce destabilizing D-terms, gauge anomaly and the Chern-Simons term for photons. We calculate the renormalization group evolution of dimension five LV operators and their mixing with dimension three LV operators, controlled by the scale of the soft-breaking masses. Dimension five LV operators are constrained by the low-energy precision measurements at 10^{-10}-10^{-5} level in units of the inverse Planck scale, while the Planck-scale suppressed dimension six LV operators are allowed by observational data.

Lorentz Violation in Supersymmetric Field Theories

We construct supersymmetric Lorentz violating operators for matter and gauge fields. We show that in the supersymmetric Standard Model the lowest possible dimension for such operators is five, and therefore they are suppressed by at least one power of an ultra--violet energy scale, providing a possible explanation for the smallness of Lorentz violation and its stability against radiative corrections. Supersymmetric Lorentz noninvariant operators do not lead to modifications of dispersion relations at high energies thereby escaping constraints from astrophysical searches for Lorentz violation.

Renormalization of Supersymmetric Gauge Theories on Orbifolds: Brane Gauge Couplings and Higher Derivative Operators

We consider supersymmetric gauge theories coupled to hyper multiplets on five and six dimensional orbifolds and determine the bulk and local fixed point renormalizations of the gauge couplings. We infer from a component analysis that the hyper multiplet does not induce renormalization of the brane gauge couplings on the five dimensional orbifold S^1/Z_2. This is not due to supersymmetry, since the bosonic and fermionic contributions cancel separately. We extend this investigation to T^2/Z_N orbifolds using supergraph techniques in six dimensions. On general Z_N orbifolds the gauge couplings do renormalize at the fixed points, except for the Z_2 fixed points of an even ordered orbifold. To cancel the bulk one-loop divergences a dimension six higher derivative operator is needed, in addition to the standard bulk gauge kinetic term.

Shape of gauge field tadpoles in string theory

Orbifolds in field theory are potentially singular objects for at their fixed points the curvature becomes infinite, therefore one may wonder whether field theory calculations near orbifold singularities can be trusted. String theory is perfectly well defined on orbifolds and can therefore be taken as a UV completion of field theory on orbifolds. We investigate the properties of field and string theory near orbifold singularities by reviewing the computation of a one loop gauge field tadpole. We find that in string theory the twisted states give contributions that have a spread of a couple of string lengths around the singularity, but otherwise the field theory picture is confirmed. One additional surprise is that in some orbifold models one can identify local tachyons that give contributions near the orbifold fixed point.

Vector/tensor duality in the five dimensional supersymmetric Green-Schwarz mechanism

The five dimensional version of the Green-Schwarz mechanism can be invoked to cancel U(1) anomalies on the boundaries of brane world models. In five dimensions there are two dual descriptions that employ either a two-form tensor field or a vector field. We present the supersymmetric extensions of these dual theories using four dimensional N=1 superspace. For the supersymmetrization of the five dimensional Chern-Simons three form this requires the introduction of a new chiral Chern-Simons multiplet. We derive the supersymmetric vector/tensor duality relations and show that not only is the usual one/two-form duality modified, but that there is also an interesting duality relation between the scalar components. Furthermore, the vector formulation always contains singular boundary mass terms which are absent in the tensor formulation. This apparent inconsistency is resolved by showing that in either formulation the four dimensional anomalous U(1) mass spectrum is identical, with the lowest lying Kaluza-Klein mode generically obtaining a finite nonzero mass.

Cosmological bounds on large extra dimensions from non-thermal production of Kaluza-Klein modes

The existing cosmological constraints on theories with large extra dimensions rely on the thermal production of the Kaluza-Klein modes of gravitons and radions in the early Universe. Successful inflation and reheating, as well as baryogenesis, typically requires the existence of a TeV-scale field in the bulk, most notably the inflaton. The non-thermal production of KK modes with masses of order 100 GeV accompanying the inflaton decay sets the lower bounds on the fundamental scale M_*. For a 1 TeV inflaton, the late decay of these modes distort the successful predictions of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis unless M_*> 35, 13, 7, 5 and 3 TeV for 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 extra dimensions, respectively. This improves the existing bounds from cosmology on M_* for 4, 5 and 6 extra dimensions. Even more stringent bounds are derived for a heavier inflaton.

Localization of heterotic anomalies on various hyper surfaces of T^6/Z_4

We investigate the structure of local anomalies of heterotic E_8 x E_8' theory on T^6/Z_4. We show that the untwisted states lead to anomalies in ten, six and four dimensions. At each of the six dimensional fixed spaces of this orbifold the twisted states ensure, that the anomalies factorize separately. As some of these twisted states live on T^2/Z_2, they give rise to four dimensional anomalies as well. At all four dimensional fixed points at worst a single Abelian anomaly can arise. Since the anomalies in all these dimensions factorize in a universal way, they can be canceled simultaneously. In addition, we show that for all U(1) factors at the four dimensional fixed points at least logarithmically divergent Fayet--Ilopoulos tadpoles are generated.

Stringy profiles of gauge field tadpoles near orbifold singularities: I. heterotic string calculations

Closed string theories on orbifolds contain both untwisted and twisted states. The latter are normally assumed to live exactly at the orbifold fixed points. We perform a calculation of a gauge field tadpole amplitude and show that off-shell both the twisted and untwisted states give rise to non-trivial momentum profiles over the orbifold C^3/Z_3. These profiles take the form of Gaussian distributions integrated over the fundamental domain of the modular parameter of the torus. The propagators of the internal coordinate fields on the torus world sheet determine the width of the Gaussian profiles. These propagators are determined up to a single normal ordering constant which must be bounded below to allow the existence of the coordinate space representation of these Gaussians. Apart from the expected massless states, massive and even tachyonic string excitations contribute to the profiles in some anomalous U(1) models. However, when a tadpole is integrated over the internal dimensions, these tachyonic contributions cancel in a non-trivial manner.

Stringy profiles of gauge field tadpoles near orbifold singularities: II. field theoretical implications

Recent work has provided a direct string calculation of the internal coordinate dependence of gauge field tadpoles on the orbifold C^3/Z_3. We investigate the structure of these profiles in momentum and coordinate space representations using both analytical and numerical methods. The twisted states are determined to be localized within a few string lengths of the singularity. This provides an example of how delta-like singularities, which are typical for field theories on orbifolds, are avoided in string theory. A systematic expansion of the full string result allows us to speculate on how the leading stringy effects can be incorporated in a field theoretical description. In one heterotic model, we find that even though tachyons are not present in the physical spectrum, they totally dominate the tadpole profile in the vicinity of the fixed point.
