Cosmic anisotropic doomsday in Bianchi type I universes

In order to investigate if the anisotropy of the spacetime may induce future singularities at a finite value of the cosmic time on the evolution of cosmological models, we study vacuum and non-vacuum Bianchi type I spacetimes exhibiting such future singularities. We show that in the case of Kasner vacuum cosmologies the spacetime may rip itself apart in a finite time, and only in the direction corresponding to the unique scale factor which diverges at this finite value of the cosmic time. The other two directional scale factors and the average scale factor do not diverge and tend to zero at this time, while the directional and average expansion rates also become infinite. Due to the absence of the matter content this anisotropic future singularity is induced by the shear scalar, which also blows up at this time. We call such a singularity "Vacuum Rip". For non-vacuum solutions we discuss fully anisotropic Bianchi type I spacetimes filled with a stiff fluid and ellipsoidal (axisymmetric) cosmological models filled with matter with isotropic and anisotropic barotropic pressure, and characterized by $σ/θ=const$, where $σ$ and $θ$ are the shear scalar and the expansion scalar respectively.

Randall-Sundrum brane universe as a ground state for Chern-Simons gravity

In stark contrast with the three-dimensional case, higher-dimensional Chern-Simons theories can have non-topological, propagating degrees of freedom. Finding those vacua that allow for the propagation of linear perturbations, however, proves to be surprisingly challenging. The simplest solutions are somehow "hyper-stable," preventing the construction of realistic, four-dimensional physical models. Here, we show that a Randall-Sundrum brane universe can be regarded as a vacuum solution of Chern-Simons gravity in five-dimensional spacetime, with non vanishing torsion along the dimension perpendicular to the brane. Linearized perturbations around this solution not only exist, but behave as standard gravitational waves on a four-dimensional Minkowski background. In the non-perturbative regime, the solution leads to a four-dimensional "cosmological function" $Λ\left( x \right)$ which depends on the Euler density of the brane. Interestingly, the fact that the solution admits nontrivial linear perturbations seems to be related to an often neglected property of the Randall-Sundrum spacetime: that it is a group manifold, or, more precisely, two identical group manifolds glued together along the brane. The gravitational theory is then built around this fact, adding the Lorentz generators and one scalar generator needed to close the algebra. In this way, a conjecture emerges: a spacetime that is also a group manifold can be regarded as the ground state of a Chern-Simons theory for an appropriate Lie algebra.

Some cosmological solutions in Einstein-Chern-Simons gravity

In this paper we find new solutions for the so called Einstein-Chern-Simons Friedmann-Robertson-Walker field equations studied in refs. (Phys. Rev. D 84 (2011) 063506, Eur. Phys. J. C 74 (2014) 3087). We consider three cases:(i) in the first case we find some solutions of the five-dimensional ChS-FRW field equations when the $h^a$ field is a perfect fluid that obeys a barotropic equation of state; (ii) in the second case we study the solutions, for the cases $γ=1/2,\ 3/4$, when the $h^a$ field is a five dimensional politropic fluid that obeys the equation $P^{(h)}=ω^{(h)}ρ^{(h)γ}$; (iii) in the third case we find the scale factor and the state parameter $ω(t)$ when the $h^a$ field is a variable modified Chaplygin gas. We consider also a space-time metric which contains as a subspace to the usual four-dimensional FRW and then we study the same three cases considered in the five-dimensional, namely when (i) the $h^a$ field is a perfect fluid, (ii) the $h^a$ field is a five dimensional politropic fluid and (iii) the $h^a$ field is a variable modified Chaplygin gas.

Static solutions in Einstein-Chern-Simons gravity

In this paper we study static solutions with more general symmetries than the spherical symmetry of the five-dimensional Einstein-Chern-Simons gravity. In this context, we study the coupling of the extra bosonic field $% h^{a}$ with ordinary matter which is quantified by the introduction of an energy-momentum tensor field associated with $h^{a}$. It is found that exist (i) a negative tangential pressure zone around low-mass distributions ($μ<μ_{1}$) when the coupling constant $α$ is greater than zero; (ii) a maximum in the tangential pressure, which can be observed in the outer region of a field distribution that satisfies $μ<μ_{2}$; (iii) solutions that behave like those obtained from models with negative cosmological constant. In such a situation, the field $h^{a}$ plays the role of a cosmological constant.

Canonical and phantom scalar fields as an interaction of two perfect fluids

In this article we investigate and develop specific aspects of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) scalar field cosmologies related to the interpretation that canonical and phantom scalar field sources may be interpreted as cosmological configurations with a mixture of two interacting barotropic perfect fluids: a matter component $ρ_1(t)$ with a stiff equation of state ($p_1=ρ_1$), and an "effective vacuum energy" $ρ_2(t)$ with a cosmological constant equation of state ($p_2=-ρ_2$). An important characteristic of this alternative equivalent formulation in the framework of interacting cosmologies is that it gives, by choosing a suitable form of the interacting term $Q$, an approach for obtaining exact and numerical solutions. The choice of $Q$ merely determines a specific scalar field with its potential, thus allowing to generate closed, open and flat FRW scalar field cosmologies.

Interacting Kasner-type cosmologies

It is well known that Kasner-type cosmologies provide a useful framework for analyzing the three-dimensional anisotropic expansion because of the simplification of the anisotropic dynamics. In this paper relativistic multi-fluid Kasner-type scenarios are studied. We first consider the general case of a superposition of two ideal cosmic fluids, as well as the particular cases of non-interacting and interacting ones, by introducing a phenomenological coupling function $q(t)$. For two-fluid cosmological scenarios there exist only cosmological scaling solutions, while for three-fluid configurations there exist not only cosmological scaling ones, but also more general solutions. In the case of triply interacting cosmic fluids we can have energy transfer from two fluids to a third one, or energy transfer from one cosmic fluid to the other two. It is shown that by requiring the positivity of energy densities there always is a matter component which violates the dominant energy condition in this kind of anisotropic cosmological scenarios.

Relic gravitons and viscous cosmologies

Previously it was shown that there exists a class of viscous cosmological models which violate the dominant energy condition for a limited amount of time after which they are smoothly connected to the ordinary radiation era (which preserves the dominant energy conditions). This violation of the dominant energy condition at an early cosmological epoch may influence the slopes of energy spectra of relic gravitons that might be of experimental relevance. However, the bulk viscosity coefficient of these cosmologies became negative during the ordinary radiation era, and then the entropy of the sources driving the geometry decreases with time. We show that in the presence of viscous sources with a linear barotropic equation of state $p=γρ$ we get viscous cosmological models with positive bulk viscous stress during all their evolution, and hence the matter entropy increases with the expansion time. In other words, in the framework of viscous cosmologies, there exist isotropic models compatible with the standard second law of thermodynamics which also may influence the slopes of energy spectra of relic gravitons.
