QED-vacuum response and Cherenkov radiated energy in non-linear and Lorentz-symmetry violating scenarios

We investigate physical consequences of non-linear electrodynamic coupled to parameters that signal violation Lorentz-symmetry breaking (LSV). Our undertaking is done by considering a general non-linear photonic Lagrangian which coupled to the Carroll-Field-Jackiw's model (CFJ). Our endeavor reveals how the (meta) material constitutive properties of the vacuum and wave propagation are affected by the interference of the LSV parameters LSV with the specific non-linear electrodynamic model under consideration. We also discuss the refractive indices for this new medium characterized by the coupling between non-linearities and the operators that carry the LSV message. Our results show that the QED-vacuum responds with birefringence and a dispersive propagation of waves. Subsequently, we consider the electromagnetic radiation produced by a moving charged particle interacting with this new medium. Our inspection illustrates that the emitted radiation reproduces the features of the Cherenkov effect for certain intensities of background magnetic fields . Finally, we compute the static potential profile within the framework of the gauge-invariant, but path-dependent, variables formalism. A logarithmic correction to the usual static Coulomb potential emerges driven by the LSV parameter and there also appear corrections due to the non-linearity; nevertheless, the logarithm behavior drops out whenever the LSV parameter is switched off.

Considerations on anomalous photon and Z-boson self-couplings from the Born-Infeld weak hypercharge action

We investigate the effects of the Born-Infeld action on the Abelian sector of the electroweak model. The consequence of this approach is the emergence of anomalous couplings in the neutral sector of the $Z$-gauge boson and photon. These new couplings consist of quartic interactions of the photon with the $Z$-particle, as for example, three-photon-and-one-$Z$ vertex. With that, we obtain the decay width of $Z \to 3\,γ$ from which we impose a bound on the Born-Infeld parameter. Other bounds are also obtained from the photon quartic couplings. Subsequently, we consider the presence of an external uniform magnetic field in connection with this Born-Infeld weak hypercharge model. The magnetic background field yields new kinematic effects, like the kinetic mixing between the photon and the $Z$-boson, and we obtain thereby the corresponding dispersion relations for the mixed photon-$Z$-particle system. Finally, we calculate the lowest-order modifications to the interaction energy for the anomalous coupling $3γ-Z$, within the framework of the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. Our results show that the interaction energy contains a linear term leading to the confinement of static probe charges. With the help of the potential that comes out, interparticle forces are estimated.

Finite electrodynamics from T-duality

In this paper, we present the repercussions of Padmanabhan's propagator in electrodynamics. This corresponds to implement T-duality effects in a U(1) gauge theory. By formulating a nonlocal action consistent with the above hypothesis, we derive the profile of static potentials between electric charges via a path integral approach. Interestingly, the Coulomb potential results regularized by a length scale proportional to the parameter $(α^\prime)^{1/2}$. Accordingly, fields are vanishing at the origin. We also discuss an array of experimental testbeds to expose the above results. It is interesting to observe that T-duality generates an effect of dimensional fractalization, that resembles similar phenomena in fractional electromagnetism. Finally, our results have also been derived with a gauge-invariant method, as a necessary check of consistency for any non-Maxwellian theory.

Lorentz-symmetry violating physics in a supersymmetric scenario in $(2+1)$-D

We study the dimensional reduction for a $(3+1)$-dimensional Lorentz Violating Lagrangian in the matter and gauge sectors in a Supersymmetric scenario. We thus obtain an effective model for photons induced by the effects of supersymmetry in our framework with Lorentz-symmetry violating. This model is discussed in connection with the attainment of a static potential between charged particles. Our calculation is done within the framework of the gauge-invariant, but path-dependent variable formalism. We thus find that the interaction energy displays a screening part, encoded by Bessel functions, and a linear confining potential.

Remarks on a compact Abelian Higgs model

Aspects of screening and confinement are re-examined for a recently proposed compact Abelian Higgs model with a $θ$-term. Our discussion is accomplished using the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism, which is an alternative to the Wilson loop approach. We explicitly show that the static potential profile is the sum of an effective-Yukawa and a linear potential, leading to the confinement of static external charges. We point out the central rôle of the parameter measuring the stiffness of the vortex lines present in the model in both the Yukawa-like and the confining sectors of the effective inter-particle potential we have computed.

Aspects of screening and confinement in a topologically massive $U{\left( 1 \right)_{\cal W}} \times U{(1)_{\cal Y}}$ Chern-Simons-Higgs theory

By using the gauge-invariant but path-dependent, variables formalism, we consider a recently proposed topologically massive $U{\left( 1 \right)_{\cal W}} \times U{(1)_{\cal Y}}$ Chern-Simons-Higgs theory in $2+1$ dimensions. In particular, we inspect the impact of a Chern-Simons mixing term between two Abelian gauge fields on physical observables. We pursue our investigation by analysing the model in two different situations. In the first case, where we integrate out the massive excitation and consider an effective model for the massless field, we show that the interaction energy contains a linear term leading to the confinement of static charge probes along with a screening contribution. The second situation, where the massless field can be exactly integrated over with its constraint duly taken into account, the interesting feature is that the resulting effective model describes a purely screening phase, without any trace of a confining regime.

Remarks on the static potential driven by vacuum nonlinearities in $D=3$ models

Within the framework of the gauge-invariant, but path-dependent, variables formalism, we study the manifestations of vacuum electromagnetic nonlinearities in $D=3$ models. For this we consider both generalized Born-Infeld and Pagels-Tomboulis-like electrodynamics, as well as, an Euler-Heisenberg-like electrodynamics. We explicitly show that generalized Born-Infeld and Pagels-Tomboulis-like electrodynamics are equivalent, where the static potential profile contains a long-range (${\raise0.5ex\hbox{$\scriptstyle 1$}\kern-0.1em/\kern-0.15em\lower0.25ex\hbox{$\scriptstyle {r^2}$}}$-type) correction to the Coulomb potential. Interestingly enough, for an Euler-Heisenberg-like electrodynamics the interaction energy contains a linear potential, leading to the confinement of static charges.

Chern-Simons-Schwinger model of confinement in $QCD$

It has been shown that the mechanism of formation of glue-bags in the strong coupling limit of Yang-Mills theory can be understood in terms of the dynamics of a higher-rank abelian gauge field, namely, the 3-form dual to the Chern-Simons topological current. Building on this result, we show that the field theoretical interpretation of the Chern-Simons term, as opposed to its topological interpretation, also leads to the analytic form of the confinement potential that arises in the large distance limit of $QCD$. In fact, for a $(3+1)$-dimensional generalization of the Schwinger model, we explicitly compute the interaction energy. This generalization is due to the presence of the topological gauge field $A_{μνρ}$. Our results show that the static potential profile contains a linear term leading to the confinement of static probe charges. Once the quantum effects of the axial vector anomaly in $QCD$ are taken into account, the new gauge field and its matter-current counterpart provide an exact replica of the Schwinger mechanism of "charge-screening" that operates in $QED_2$.

Remarks on nonlinear electrodynamics II

We consider both massive Euler-Heisenberg-like and Euler-Heisenberg-like Electrodynamics in the approximation of the strong-field limit. Our analysis shows that massive Euler-Heisenberg-type Electrodynamics displays the vacuum birefringence phenomenon. Afterwards, we calculate the lowest-order modifications to the interaction energy for both classes of Electrodynamics, within the framework of the gauge-invariant path-dependent variables formalism. Interestingly enough, for massive Euler-Heisenbeg-like electrodynamics (Whichmann-Kroll) we obtain a new long-range ($1/r^3$- type) correction, apart from a long-range ($1/r^5$- type) correction to the Coulomb potential. However, Euler-Heisenberg-like Electrodynamics in the approximation of the strong-field limit (to the leading logarithmic order), display a long-range ($1/r^5$- type) correction to the Coulomb potential. Again, for their non-commutative versions, the interaction energy is ultraviolet finite.

On finite interquark potential in $D=3$ driven by a minimal length

We address the effect of a quantum gravity induced minimal length on a physical observable for three- dimensional Yang-Mills. Our calculation is done within stationary perturbation theory. Interestingly enough, we find an ultraviolet finite interaction energy, which contains a regularized logarithmic function and a linear confining potential. This result highlights the role played by the new quantum of length in our discussion.

Remarks on nonlinear Electrodynamics

We consider both generalized Born-Infeld and Exponential Electrodynamics. The field-energy of a point-like charge is finite only for Born-Infeld-like Electrodynamics. However, both Born-Infeld-type and Exponential Electrodynamics display the vacuum birefringence phenomenon. Subsequently, we calculate the lowest-order modifications to the interaction energy for both classes of Electrodynamics, within the framework of the gauge-invariant path-dependent variables formalism. These are shown to result in long-range ($1/r^5$- type) corrections to the Coulomb potential. Once again, for their non-commutative versions, the interaction energy is ultraviolet finite.

The Abelian Higgs model and a minimal length in an un-particle scenario

We consider both the Abelian Higgs model and the impact of a minimal length in the un-particle sector. It is shown that even if the Higgs field takes a non-vanishing v.e.v., gauge interaction keeps its long range character leading to an effective gauge symmetry restoration. The effect of a quantum gravity induced minimal length on a physical observable is then estimated by using a physically-based alternative to the usual Wilson loop approach. Interestingly, we obtain an ultraviolet finite interaction energy described by a confluent hyper-geometric function, which shows a remarkable richness of behavior.

Finite Field-Energy and Interparticle Potential in Logarithmic Electrodynamics

We pursue an investigation of Logarithmic Electrodynamics, for which the field-energy of a point-like charge is finite, as it happens in the case of the usual Born-Infeld electrodynamics. We also show that, contrary to the latter, Logarithmic Electrodynamics exhibits the feature of birefringence. Next, we analyze the lowest-order modifications for both Logarithmic Electrodynamics and for its non-commutative version, within the framework of the gauge-invariant path-dependent variables formalism. The calculation shows a long-range correction ($1/r^5$- type) to the Coulomb potential for Logarithmic Electrodynamics. Interestingly enough, for its non-commutative version, the interaction energy is ultraviolet finite. We highlight the role played by the new quantum of length in our analysis.

Remarks on the interquark potential in the presence of a minimal length

We calculate the lowest-order corrections to the static potential for both Yang-Mills theory and gluodynamics in curved space-time, in the presence of a quantum gravity induced minimal length. Our analysis is carried out within stationary perturbation theory. As a consequence, the potential energy is the sum of a Yukawa-like potential and a linear potential for gluodynamics in curved space-time, leading to the confinement of static charges. Interestingly enough, we obtain that the coefficient of the linear term ("string tension") is ultraviolet finite. We should highlight the role played by the new quantum of length in our analysis.

The photino sector and a confining potential in a supersymetric Lorentz-symmetry-violating model

We study the spectrum of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Carroll-Field-Jackiw model for Electrodynamics with a topological Chern-Simons-like Lorentz-symmetry violating term. We identify a number of independent background fermion condensates, work out the gaugino dispersion relation and propose a photonic effective action to consider aspects of confinement induced by the SUSY background fermion condensates, which also appear to signal Lorentz-symmetry violation in the photino sector of the action. Our calculations of the static potential are carried out within the framework of the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism which are alternative to the Wilson loop approach. Our results show that the interaction energy contains a linear term leading to the confinement of static probe charges.

Aspects of finite electrodynamics in D=3 dimensions

We study the impact of a minimal length on physical observables for a three-dimensional axionic electrodynamics. Our calculation is done within the framework of the gauge-invariant, but path-dependent, variables formalism which is alternative to the Wilson loop approach. Our result shows that the interaction energy contains a regularised Bessel function and a linear confining potential. This calculation involves no theta expansion at all. Once again, the present analysis displays the key role played by the new quantum of length.

Gauge symmetry restoration in the un-particle vacuum

In this note we investigate the impact of some "new-physics", beyond the electro-weak Standard Model of elementary particles, on the Higgs vacuum. We consider both un-particle and quantum gravity induced effects. We find that even if the Higgs field takes a non-vanishing v.e.v., gauge interaction keeps its long range character leading to an effective gauge symmetry restoration. Next, by using a physically-based alternative to the usual Wilson loop approach, we examine the effect of a quantum gravity induced minimal length on a physical observable in the un-particle sector. As a consequence, we obtain an ultraviolet finite interaction energy described by a confluent hyper-geometric function. This result displays a marked qualitative departure from its standard counterpart.

Finite axionic electrodynamics from a new noncommutative approach

Using the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism, we compute the static quantum potential for noncommutative axionic electrodynamics (or axionic electrodynamics in the presence of a minimal length). Accordingly, we obtain an ultraviolet finite static potential which is the sum of a Yukawa-type and a linear potential, leading to the confinement of static charges. Interestingly, it should be noted that this calculation involves no theta expansion at all. The present result makes manifest the key role played by the new quantum of length in our analysis.

Remarks on a Chern-Simons-like coupling

We consider the static quantum potential for a gauge theory which includes a light massive vector field interacting with the familiar $U(1)_{QED}$ photon via a Chern-Simons- like coupling, by using the gauge-invariant, but path-dependent, variables formalism. An exactly screening phase is then obtained, which displays a marked departure of a qualitative nature from massive axionic electrodynamics. The above static potential profile is similar to that encountered in axionic electrodynamics consisting of a massless axion-like field, as well as to that encountered in the coupling between the familiar $U(1)_{QED}$ photon and a second massive gauge field living in the so-called $U(1)_h$ hidden-sector, inside a superconducting box.

Aspects of Magnetic Field Configurations in Planar Nonlinear Electrodynamics

In the framework of three-dimensional Born-Infeld Electrodynamics, we pursue an investigation of the consequences of the space-time dimensionality on the existence of magnetostatic fields generated by electric charges at rest in an inertial frame, which are present in its four-dimensional version. Our analysis reveals interesting features of the model. In fact, a magnetostatic field associated with an electric charge at rest does not appear in this case. Interestingly, the addition of the topological term (Chern-Simons) to Born-Infeld Electrodynamics yields the appearance of the magnetostatic field. We also contemplate the fields associated to the would-be-magnetic monopole in three dimensions.

Born-Infeld Electrodynamics and Euler-Heisenberg-like Model: outstanding examples of the lack of commutativity among quantized truncated actions and truncated quantized actions

We calculate the lowest-order corrections to the static potential for both the generalized Born-Infeld Electrodynamics and an Euler-Heisenberg-like model, in the presence of a constant external magnetic field. Our analysis is carried out within the framework of the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. The calculation reveals a long-range correction ($ {\raise0.7ex\hbox{$1$} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 {r^5}}}\right.\kern-\nulldelimiterspace} \lower0.7ex\hbox{${r^5}$}}$-type) to the Coulomb potential for the generalized Born-Infeld Electrodynamics. Interestingly enough, in the Euler-Heisenberg-like model, the static potential remains Coulombian. Therefore, contrary to popular belief, the quantized truncated action and the truncated quantized action do not commute at all.

Coulomb's law corrections from a gauge-kinetic mixing

We study the static quantum potential for a gauge theory which includes the mixing between the familiar photon $U(1)_{QED}$ and a second massive gauge field living in the so-called hidden-sector $U(1)_h$. Our discussion is carried out using the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism, which is alternative to the Wilson loop approach. Our results show that the static potential is a Yukawa correction to the usual static Coulomb potential. Interestingly, when this calculation is done inside a superconducting box, the Coulombic piece disappears leading to a screening phase.

Exploring Lee-Wick finite electrodynamics

We consider the Lee-Wick (LW) finite electrodynamics, i.e., the U(1) gauge theory where a (gauge-invariant) dimension-6 operator containing higher-derivatives is added to the free Lagrangian of the U(1) sector. Three bounds on the LW heavy photon mass are then estimated. It is amazing that one of these bounds, actually the most reliable one, is of the order of the vectorial bosons masses found in nature. The lowest order modification of the Coulomb potential due to the presence of the higher-derivative term is obtained afterward by means of two outstanding methods: one of them is based on the marriage of quantum mechanics with the nonrelativistic limit of quantum field theory; the other, pioneered by Dirac, makes use of a gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. Interestingly enough, these approaches, despite being radically different, lead to the same result which seems to indicate that they are equivalent term by term.

Some aspects of a Chern-Simons-like coupling in an external magnetic field

For a gauge theory which includes a light massive vector field interacting with the familiar photon U(1)_{QED} via a Chern-Simons- like coupling, we study the static quantum potential. Our analysis is based on the gauge-invariant, but path-dependent, variables formalism. The result is that the theory describes an exactly screening phase. Interestingly enough, this result displays a marked departure of a qualitative nature from the axionic elctrodynamics result. However, the present result is analogous to that encountered in the coupling between the familiar photon U(1)_{QED} and a second massive gauge field living in the so-called hidden-sector U(1)_h, inside a superconducting box.

Un-graviton corrections to the Schwarzschild black hole

We introduce an effective action smoothly extending the standard Einstein-Hilbert action to include un-gravity effects. The improved field equations are solved for the un-graviton corrected Schwarzschild geometry reproducing the Mureika result. This is an important test to confirm the original ``guess'' of the form of the Un-Schwarzschild metric. Instead of working in the weak field approximation and ``dressing'' the Newtonian potential with un-gravitons, we solve the ``effective Einstein equations'' including all order un-gravity effects. An unexpected ``bonus'' of accounting un-gravity effects is the fractalisation of the event horizon. In the un-gravity dominated regime the event horizon thermodynamically behaves as fractal surface of dimensionality twice the scale dimension d_U.

Confining potential from interacting magnetic and torsion fields

Adopting the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism, we study the coupling of torsion fields with photons in the presence of an external background electromagnetic. We explicitly show that, in the case of a constant electric field strength expectation value, the static potential remains Coulombic, while in the case of a constant magnetic field strength expectation value a confining potential is obtained. This result displays a marked qualitative departure from the usual coupling of axionlike particles with photons in the presence of an external magnetic field.

From screening to confinement in a Higgs-like model

We investigate a recently proposed Higgs-like model (arXiv:0811.4423 [hep-th]), in the framework of a gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. We compute the static potential between test charges in a condensate of scalars and fermions. In the case of charged massive scalar we recover the screening potential. On the other hand, in the Higgs case, with a "tachyonic" mass term and a quartic potential in the Lagrangian, unexpected features are found. It is observed that the interaction energy is the sum of an effective-Yukawa and a linear potential, leading to the confinement of static charges.

On condensation of charged scalars in D=3 dimensions

By using the gauge-invariant, but path-dependent, variables formalism, we study the impact of condensates on physical observables for a three-dimensional Higgs-like model. As a result, for the case of a physical mass term like $m_H^2 ϕ^ * ϕ$, we recover a screening potential. Interestingly enough, in the case of a "wrong-sign" mass term $- m_H^2 ϕ^ * ϕ$, unexpected features are found. It is shown that the interaction energy is the sum of an effective-Bessel and a linear potential, leading to the confinement of static charges. However, when a Chern-Simons term is included, the surprising result is that the theory describes an exactly screening phase.

Duality and confinement in D=3 models driven by condensation of topological defects

We study the interplay of duality and confinement in certain three-dimensional models induced by the condensation of topological defects. To this end we check for the confinement phenomenon, in both sides of the duality, using the static quantum potential within the framework of the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. Our calculations show that the interaction energy contains a linear term leading to the confinement of static probe charges.
