Symmetries and Asymmetries of B -> K* mu+ mu- Decays in the Standard Model and Beyond

The rare decay B -> K* (-> K pi) mu+ mu- is regarded as one of the crucial channels for B physics as the polarization of the K* allows a precise angular reconstruction resulting in many observables that offer new important tests of the Standard Model and its extensions. These angular observables can be expressed in terms of CP-conserving and CP-violating quantities which we study in terms of the full form factors calculated from QCD sum rules on the light-cone, including QCD factorization corrections. We investigate all observables in the context of the Standard Model and various New Physics models, in particular the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity and various MSSM scenarios, identifying those observables with small to moderate dependence on hadronic quantities and large impact of New Physics. One important result of our studies is that new CP-violating phases will produce clean signals in CP-violating asymmetries. We also identify a number of correlations between various observables which will allow a clear distinction between different New Physics scenarios.

B->eta(') Form Factors in QCD

We calculate the semileptonic form factors $f_+^{B\to η}(q^2)$ and $f_+^{B\to η'}(q^2)$ from QCD sum rules on the light-cone (LCSRs), to NLO in QCD, and for small to moderate q^2, $0\leq q^2\leq 16 {\rm GeV}^2$. We include in particular the so-called singlet contribution, i.e.\ weak annihilation of the B meson with the emission of two gluons which, thanks to the U(1)$_{\rm A}$ anomaly, couple directly to $\etap$. This effect is included to leading-twist accuracy. This contribution has been neglected in previous calculations of the form factors from LCSRs. We find that the singlet contribution to $f_+^{B\to η'}$ can be up to 20%, while that to $f_+^{B\to η}$ is, as expected, much smaller and below 3%. We also suggest to measure the ratio ${\cal B}(B\toη' e ν)/{\cal B}(B\to ηe ν)$ to better constrain the size of the singlet contribution.

Twist-3 Distribution Amplitudes of K* and phi Mesons

We present a systematic study of twist-3 light-cone distribution amplitudes of $K^*$ and $ϕ$ mesons in QCD. The structure of SU(3)-breaking corrections is studied in detail. Non-perturbative input parameters are estimated from QCD sum rules. As a by-product, we update the parameters describing the twist-3 distribution amplitudes of the $ρ$ meson. We also review and update predictions for the twist-2 distribution amplitudes of $ρ$, $K^*$ and $ϕ$.

|V_td/V_ts| from B-> V gamma

The dominant theoretical uncertainty in extracting |V_td/V_ts| from the ratio of branching ratios R=B(B->(rho,omega)gamma)/B(B->K* gamma) is given by the ratio of form factors xi=T_1^{B->K*}(0)/T_1^{B->rho}(0). We re-examine xi in the framework of QCD sum rules on the light-cone, taking into account hitherto neglected SU(3)-breaking effects. We find xi=1.17 \pm 0.09. Using QCD factorisation for the branching ratios, and the current experimental average for R quoted by HFAG, this translates into |V_td/V_ts|^HFAG_{B->V gamma} = 0.192 \pm 0.014(th) \pm 0.016(exp). This result agrees, within errors, with that obtained from the Standard Model unitarity triangle, |V_td/V_ts|_SM = 0.216 \pm 0.029, based on tree-level-only processes, and with |V_td/V_ts|_{Delta m} = 0.2060^{+0.0081}_{-0.0060}(th) \pm 0.0007(exp), from the CDF measurement of B_s oscillations.

Higher-Twist Distribution Amplitudes of the K Meson in QCD

We present a systematic study of twist-3 and twist-4 light-cone distribution amplitudes of the K meson in QCD. The structure of SU(3)-breaking corrections is studied in detail. Non-perturbative input parameters are estimated from QCD sum rules and renormalons. As a by-product, we give a complete reanalysis of the twist-3 and -4 parameters of the pi-meson distribution amplitudes; some of the results differ from those usually quoted in the literature.

|V_ub| and Constraints on the Leading-Twist Pion Distribution Amplitude from B->pi l nu

Using new experimental data on the leptonic mass spectrum of B->pi l nu, we simultaneously determine |V_ub| and constrain a_2^pi and a_4^pi, the first two Gegenbauer moments of the pion's leading-twist distribution amplitude. We find |V_ub| = (3.2\pm 0.1\pm 0.1\pm 0.3) 10^-3, where the first error is experimental, the second comes from the shape of the form factor in q^2 and the third is a 8% uncertainty from the normalisation of the form factor. We also find a_2^pi(1 GeV)=0.19\pm 0.19 and a_4^pi(1 GeV)\geq -0.07.

Improved Analysis of B->pi e nu from QCD Sum Rules on the Light-Cone

We present a new calculation of the B->pi form-factor f_+, relevant for the measurement of |V_{ub}| from semileptonic B->pi transitions, from QCD sum rules on the light-cone. The new element is the calculation of radiative corrections to next-to-leading twist-3 accuracy. We find that these contributions are factorizable at O(alpha_s), which lends additional support to the method of QCD sum rules on the light-cone. We obtain f_+(0) = 0.26\pm 0.06 \pm 0.05, where the first error accounts for the uncertainty in the input-parameters and the second is a guesstimate of the systematic uncertainty induced by the approximations inherent in the method. We also obtain a simple parametrization of the form-factor which is valid in the entire kinematical range of semileptonic decays and consistent with vector-meson dominance at large momentum-transfer.

A Comparative Study of the Decays $B \to (K,K^*) \ell^+ \ell^-$ in Standard Model and Supersymmetric Theories

Using improved theoretical calculations of the decay form factors in the Light Cone-QCD sum rule approach, we investigate the decay rates, dilepton invariant mass spectra and the forward-backward (FB) asymmetry in the decays $B \to (K,K^*) \ell^+ \ell^-$ ($\ell^\pm =e^\pm,μ^\pm,τ^\pm$) in the standard model (SM) and a number of popular variants of the supersymmetric (SUSY) models. Theoretical precision on the differential decay rates and FB-asymmetry is estimated in these theories taking into account various parametric uncertainties. We show that existing data on $B \to X_s γ$ and the experimental upper limit on the branching ratio ${\cal B}(B \to K^* μ^+ μ^-)$ provide interesting bounds on the coefficients of the underlying effective theory. We argue that the FB-asymmetry in $B \to K^* \ell^+ \ell^-$ constitutes a precision test of the SM and its measurement in forthcoming experiments may reveal new physics. In particular, the presently allowed large-$\tan β$ solutions in SUGRA models, as well as more general flavor-violating SUSY models, yield FB-asymmetries which are characteristically different from the corresponding ones in the SM.

An Analysis of B_s Decays in the Left-Right-Symmetric Model with Spontaneous CP Violation

Non-leptonic B_s decays into CP eigenstates that are caused by \bar b -> \bar cc\bar s quark-level transitions, such as B_s -> D_s^+D^-_s, J/psi eta^(') or J/psi phi, provide a powerful tool to search for ``new physics'', as the CP-violating effects in these modes are tiny in the Standard Model. We explore these effects for a particular scenario of new physics, the left-right-symmetric model with spontaneous CP violation. In our analysis, we take into account all presently available experimental constraints on the parameters of this model, i.e. those implied by K- and B-decay observables; we find that CP asymmetries as large as O(40%) may arise in the B_s channels, whereas the left-right-symmetric model favours a small CP asymmetry in the ``gold-plated'' mode B_d -> J/psi K_S. Such a pattern would be in favour of B-physics experiments at hadron machines, where the B_s modes are very accessible.

Exclusive Semileptonic and Rare B-Meson Decays in QCD

We present the first complete results for the semileptonic and rare radiative form factors of B-mesons weak decay into a light vector-meson (rho, omega, K*, phi) in the light-cone sum-rule approach. The calculation includes radiative corrections, higher-twist corrections and SU(3)-breaking effects. The theoretical uncertainty is investigated in detail. A simple parametrization of the form factors is given in terms of three parameters each. We find that the form factors observe several relations inspired by heavy-quark symmetry.

Higher Twist Distribution Amplitudes of Vector Mesons in QCD: Formalism and Twist Three Distributions

We present a systematic study of twist three light-cone distribution amplitudes of vector mesons in QCD, which is based on conformal expansion and takes into account meson and quark mass corrections. A complete set of distribution amplitudes is constructed for rho, omega, K* and phi mesons, which satisfies all (exact) equations of motion and constraints from conformal expansion. Nonperturbative input parameters are calculated from QCD sum rules, including an update of SU(3) breaking corrections in the leading twist distributions.

Use and Misuse of QCD Sum Rules in Heavy-to-light Transitions: the Decay $B\toρe ν$ Reexamined

The existing calculations of the form factors describing the decay $B\toρe ν$ from QCD sum rules have yielded conflicting results at small values of the invariant mass squared of the lepton pair. We demonstrate that the disagreement originates from the failure of the short-distance expansion to describe the $ρ$ meson distribution amplitude in the region where almost the whole momentum is carried by one of the constituents. This limits the applicability of QCD sum rules based on the short-distance expansion of a three-point correlation function to heavy-to-light transitions and calls for an expansion around the light-cone, as realized in the light-cone sum rule approach. We derive and update light-cone sum rules for all the semileptonic form factors, using recent results on the $ρ$ meson distribution amplitudes. The results are presented in detail together with a careful analysis of the uncertainties, including estimates of higher-twist effects, and compared to lattice calculations and recent CLEO measurements. We also derive a set of ``improved'' three-point sum rules, in which some of the problems of the short-distance expansion are avoided and whose results agree to good accuracy with those from light-cone sum rules.

Next-to-leading Order Radiative Corrections to the Decay $b\to ccs$

We calculate the complete ${\cal O}(α_s)$ corrections to the quark decay $b\to ccs$ taking full account of the quark masses, but neglecting penguin contributions. For a c to the b quark mass ratio $m_c/m_b= 0.3$ and a strange quark mass of $0.2\,$GeV, we find that the next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections increase $Γ(b\to ccs)$ by $(32\pm 15)\%$ with respect to the leading order expression, where the uncertainty is mostly due to scale- and scheme-dependences. Combining this result with the known NLO and non-perturbative corrections to other B meson decay channels we obtain an updated value for the semileptonic branching ratio of B mesons, $B_{SL}$, of $(12.0\pm 1.4)\% $ using pole quark masses and $(11.2\pm 1.7)\% $ using running $\overline{\mbox{MS}}$ masses.

The Semileptonic Decays $D\to π(ρ) e ν$ and $B\to π(ρ) e ν$ from QCD Sum Rules

We investigate the semileptonic decays of B and D mesons into $π$ and $ρ$ mesons, respectively, by means of QCD sum rules. We find that for the vector formfactors involved the pole dominance hypothesis is valid to good accuracy with pole masses in the expected range. Pole dominance, however, does not apply to the axial formfactors which results in specific predictions for the predominant polarization of the $ρ$ meson and the shape of the lepton spectrum. For the total decay rates we find $Γ(\bar B^0 \to π^+ e^- \barν) = (5.1\pm 1.1)\,|V_{ub}|^2\, 10^{12}\,{\rm s^{-1}}$, $Γ( D^0 \to π^- e^+ ν) = (8.0\pm 1.7)\,|V_{cd}|^2\, 10^{10}\,{\rm s^{-1}}$, $Γ(\bar B^0 \to ρ^+ e^- \barν) = (1.2\pm 0.4\,)\,|V_{ub}|^2\, 10^{13}\,{\rm s^{-1}}$ and $Γ(D^0 \to ρ^- e^+ν) = (2.4\pm 0.7)\,|V_{cd}|^2\, 10^{9}\,{\rm s^{-1}}$.
