NNLO anomalous dimension matrix for twist-two flavor-singlet operators

Conformal symmetry of QCD is restored at the Wilson-Fisher critical point in noninteger $4-2ε$ space-time dimensions. Correlation functions of multiplicatively renormalizable operators with different anomalous dimensions at the critical point vanish identically. We show that this property allows one to calculate off-diagonal parts of the anomalous dimension matrices for leading-twist operators from a set of two-point correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators which can be evaluated using standard computer algebra techniques. As an illustration, we present the results for the NNLO anomalous dimension matrix for flavor-singlet QCD operators for spin $N\le 8$.

Operator product expansion for the non-local gluon condensate

We consider the short-distance expansion of the product of two gluon field strength tensors connected by a straight-line-ordered Wilson line. The vacuum expectation value of this nonlocal operator is a common object in studies of the QCD vacuum structure, whereas its nucleon expectation value is known as the gluon quasi-parton distribution and is receiving a lot of attention as a tool to extract gluon distribution functions from lattice calculations. Extending our previous study, we calculate the three-loop coefficient functions of the scalar operators in the operator product expansion up to dimension four. As a by-product, the three-loop anomalous dimension of the nonlocal two-gluon operator is obtained as well.

Electroproduction of tensor mesons in QCD

Due to multiple possible polarizations hard exclusive production of tensor mesons by virtual photons or in heavy meson decays offers interesting possibilities to study the helicity structure of the underlying short-distance process. Motivated by the first measurement of the transition form factor $γ^*γ\to f_2(1270)$ at large momentum transfers by the BELLE collaboration we present an improved QCD analysis of this reaction in the framework of collinear factorization including contributions of twist-three quark-antiquark-gluon operators and an estimate of soft end-point corrections using light-cone sum rules. The results appear to be in a very good agreement with the data, in particular the predicted scaling behavior is reproduced in all cases.

Two-loop conformal generators for leading-twist operators in QCD

QCD evolution equations in minimal subtraction schemes have a hidden symmetry: One can construct three operators that commute with the evolution kernel and form an $SL(2)$ algebra, i.e. they satisfy (exactly) the $SL(2)$ commutation relations. In this paper we find explicit expressions for these operators to two-loop accuracy going over to QCD in non-integer $d=4-2ε$ space-time dimensions at the intermediate stage. In this way conformal symmetry of QCD is restored on quantum level at the specially chosen (critical) value of the coupling, and at the same time the theory is regularized allowing one to use the standard renormalization procedure for the relevant Feynman diagrams. Quantum corrections to conformal generators in $d=4-2ε$ effectively correspond to the conformal symmetry breaking in the physical theory in four dimensions and the $SL(2)$ commutation relations lead to nontrivial constraints on the renormalization group equations for composite operators. This approach is valid to all orders in perturbation theory and the result includes automatically all terms that can be identified as due to a nonvanishing QCD $β$-function (in the physical theory in four dimensions). Our result can be used to derive three-loop evolution equations for flavor-nonsinglet quark-antiquark operators including mixing with the operators containing total derivatives. These equations govern, e.g., the scale dependence of generalized hadron parton distributions and light-cone meson distribution amplitudes.

Electroproduction of the $N^\ast(1535)$ nucleon resonance in QCD

Following the 12 GeV upgrade, a dedicated experiment is planned with the Hall B CLAS12 detector at Jefferson Lab, with the aim to study electroproduction of nucleon resonances at high photon virtualities up to $Q^2 = 12$ GeV$^2$. In this work we present a QCD-based approach to the theoretical interpretation of these upcoming results in the framework of light-cone sum rules that combine perturbative calculations with dispersion relations and duality. The form factors are thus expressed in terms of $N^\ast(1535)$ light-front wave functions at small transverse separations, called distribution amplitudes. The distribution amplitudes can therefore be determined from the comparison with the experimental data on form factors and compared to the results of lattice QCD simulations. The results of the corresponding next-to-leading order calculation are presented and compared with the existing data. We find that the form factors are dominated by the twist-four distribution amplitudes that are related to the $P$-wave three-quark wave functions of the $N^\ast(1535)$, i.e. to contributions of orbital angular momentum.

Evolution equation for the higher-twist B-meson distribution amplitude

We find that the evolution equation for the three-particle quark-gluon B-meson light-cone distribution amplitude (DA) of subleading twist is completely integrable in the large $N_c$ limit and can be solved exactly. The lowest anomalous dimension is separated from the remaining, continuous, spectrum by a finite gap. The corresponding eigenfunction coincides with the contribution of quark-gluon states to the two-particle DA $ϕ_-(ω)$ so that the evolution equation for the latter is the same as for the leading-twist DA $ϕ_+(ω)$ up to a constant shift in the anomalous dimension. Thus, ``genuine'' three-particle states that belong to the continuous spectrum effectively decouple from $ϕ_-(ω)$ to the leading-order accuracy. In turn, the scale dependence of the full three-particle DA turns out to be nontrivial so that the contribution with the lowest anomalous dimension does not become leading at any scale. The results are illustrated on a simple model that can be used in studies of $1/m_b$ corrections to heavy-meson decays in the framework of QCD factorization or light-cone sum rules.

Pion Distribution Amplitude from Lattice QCD

We have calculated the second moment of the pion light-cone distribution amplitude using two flavors of dynamical (clover) fermions on lattices of different volumes, lattice spacings between $0.06 \, \mathrm {fm}$ and $0.08 \, \mathrm {fm}$ and pion masses down to $m_π\sim 150 \, \mathrm {MeV}$. Our result for the second Gegenbauer coefficient is $a_2 = 0.1364(154)(145)$ and for the width parameter $\langle ξ^2 \rangle = 0.2361(41)(39)$. Both numbers refer to the scale $μ=2 \, \mathrm {GeV}$in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme, the first error is statistical including the uncertainty of the chiral extrapolation, and the second error is the estimated uncertainty coming from the nonperturbatively determined renormalization factors.

Second Moment of the Pion Light-cone Distribution Amplitude from Lattice QCD

We present the results of a lattice study of the second moment of the light-cone pion distribution amplitude using two flavors of dynamical (clover) fermions on lattices of different volumes and pion masses down to $m_π\sim 150 \, \mathrm {MeV}$. At lattice spacings between $0.06 \, \mathrm {fm}$ and $0.08 \, \mathrm {fm}$ we find for the second Gegenbauer moment the value $a_2 = 0.1364(154)(145)$ at the scale $μ=2 \, \mathrm {GeV}$ in the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scheme, where the first error is statistical including the uncertainty of the chiral extrapolation, and the second error is the estimated uncertainty coming from the nonperturbatively determined renormalization factors.

Conformal symmetry of the Lange-Neubert evolution equation

The Lange-Neubert evolution equation describes the scale dependence of the wave function of a meson built of an infinitely heavy quark and light antiquark at light-like separations, which is the hydrogen atom problem of QCD. It has numerous applications to the studies of B-meson decays. We show that the kernel of this equation can be written in a remarkably compact form, as a logarithm of the generator of special conformal transformation in the light-ray direction. This representation allows one to study solutions of this equation in a very simple and mathematically consistent manner. Generalizing this result, we show that all heavy-light evolution kernels that appear in the renormalization of higher-twist B-meson distribution amplitudes can be written in the same form.

Integrability of the evolution equations for heavy-light baryon distribution amplitudes

We consider evolution equations describing the scale dependence of the wave function of a baryon containing an infinitely heavy quark and a pair of light quarks at small transverse separations, which is the QCD analogue of the helium atom. The evolution equations depend on the relative helicity of the light quarks. For the aligned helicities, we find that the equation is completely integrable, that is it has a nontrivial integral of motion, and obtain exact analytic expressions for the eigenfunctions and the anomalous dimensions. The evolution equation for anti-aligned helicities contains an extra term that breaks integrability and creates a "bound state" with the anomalous dimension separated from the rest of the spectrum by a finite gap. The corresponding eigenfunction is found using numerical methods. It describes the momentum fraction distribution of the light quarks in, e.g., $Λ_b$-baryon at large scales.

Light-cone Distribution Amplitudes of the Nucleon and Negative Parity Nucleon Resonances from Lattice QCD

We present the results of a lattice study of light-cone distribution amplitudes (DAs) of the nucleon and negative parity nucleon resonances using two flavors of dynamical (clover) fermions on lattices of different volumes and pion masses down to m_pi = 150 MeV. We find that the three valence quarks in the proton share their momentum in the proportion 37% : 31% : 31%, where the larger fraction corresponds to the u-quark that carries proton helicity, and determine the value of the wave function at the origin in position space, which turns out to be small compared to the existing estimates based on QCD sum rules. Higher-order moments are constrained by our data and are all compatible with zero within our uncertainties. We also calculate the normalization constants of the higher-twist DAs that are related to the distribution of quark angular momentum. Furthermore, we use the variational method and customized parity projection operators to study the states with negative parity. In this way we are able to separate the contributions of the two lowest states that, as we argue, possibly correspond to N*(1535) and a mixture of N*(1650) and the pion-nucleon continuum, respectively. It turns out that the state that we identify with N*(1535) has a very different DA as compared to both the second observed negative parity state and the nucleon, which may explain the difference in the decay patterns of N*(1535) and N*(1650) observed in experiment.

NLO light-cone sum rules for the nucleon electromagnetic form factors

We study the electromagnetic nucleon form factors within the approach based on light-cone sum rules. We include the next-to-leading-order corrections for the contributions of twist-three and twist-four operators and a consistent treatment of the nucleon mass corrections in our calculation. It turns out that a self-consistent picture arises when the three valence quarks carry $40\%:30\%:30\%$ of the proton momentum.

QCD evolution equations from conformal symmetry

QCD evolution equations in $\text{MS}$-like schemes can be recovered from the same equations in a modified theory, QCD in non-integer $d=4-2ε$ dimensions, which enjoys exact scale and conformal invariance at the critical point. Restrictions imposed by the conformal symmetry of the modified theory allow one to obtain complete evolution kernels in integer (physical) dimensions at the given order of perturbation theory from the spectrum of anomalous dimensions added by the calculation of the special conformal anomaly at one order less. We use this technique to derive two-loop evolution equations for flavor-nonsinglet quark-antiquark light-ray operators that encode the scale dependence of generalized hadron parton distributions.

Resolving kinematic ambiguities in QCD predictions for Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering

The existing QCD predictions for the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) depend on the convention used for the skewedness parameter and on the reference frame used to define helicity amplitudes. These ambiquities are formally power-suppressed but numerically significant. They are cancelled by finite-$t$ and target mass corrections that have been calculated recently to the $1/Q^2$ accuracy. It turns out that these corrections can be minimized, at least for unpolarized observables, by choosing a specific reference frame where longitudinal directions are defined by the photon momenta.

Transition form factors $γ^*γ\toη$ and $γ^*γ\toη'$ in QCD

We update the theoretical framework for the QCD calculation of transition form factors $γ^*γ\toη$ and $γ^*γ\toη'$ at large photon virtualities including full next-to-leading order analysis of perturbative corrections, the charm quark contribution, and taking into account SU(3)-flavor breaking effects and the axial anomaly contributions to the power-suppressed twist-four distribution amplitudes. The numerical analysis of the existing experimental data is performed with these improvements.

Two-loop evolution equations for light-ray operators

QCD in non-integer d=4-2 epsilon space-time dimensions possesses a nontrivial critical point and enjoys exact scale and conformal invariance. This symmetry imposes nontrivial restrictions on the form of the renormalization group equations for composite operators in physical (integer) dimensions and allows to reconstruct full kernels from their eigenvalues (anomalous dimensions). We use this technique to derive two-loop evolution equations for flavor-nonsinglet quark-antiquark light-ray operators that encode the scale dependence of generalized hadron parton distributions and light-cone distribution amplitudes in the most compact form.

preprint2013arXiv

Evolution equations beyond one loop from conformal symmetry

We study implications of exact conformal invariance of scalar quantum field theories at the critical point in non-integer dimensions for the evolution kernels of the light-ray operators in physical (integer) dimensions. We demonstrate that all constraints due the conformal symmetry are encoded in the form of the generators of the collinear sl(2) subgroup. Two of them, S_- and S_0, can be fixed at all loops in terms of the evolution kernel, while the generator of special conformal transformations, S_+, receives nontrivial corrections which can be calculated order by order in perturbation theory. Provided that the generator S_+ is known at the k-1 loop order, one can fix the evolution kernel in physical dimension to the k-loop accuracy up to terms that are invariant with respect to the tree-level generators. The invariant parts can easily be restored from the anomalous dimensions. The method is illustrated on two examples: The O(n)-symmetric phi^4 theory in d=4 to the three-loop accuracy, and the su(n) matrix phi^3 theory in d=6 to the two-loop accuracy. We expect that the same technique can be used in gauge theories e.g. in QCD.

Nucleon Form Factors and Distribution Amplitudes in QCD

We derive light-cone sum rules for the electromagnetic nucleon form factors including the next-to-leading-order corrections for the contribution of twist-three and twist-four operators and a consistent treatment of the nucleon mass corrections. The essence of this approach is that soft Feynman contributions are calculated in terms of small transverse distance quantities using dispersion relations and duality. The form factors are thus expressed in terms of nucleon wave functions at small transverse separations, called distribution amplitudes, without any additional parameters. The distribution amplitudes, therefore, can be extracted from the comparison with the experimental data on form factors and compared to the results of lattice QCD simulations. A selfconsistent picture emerges, with the three valence quarks carrying 40%:30%:30% of the proton momentum.

Operator product expansion in QCD in off-forward kinematics: Separation of kinematic and dynamical contributions

We develop a general approach to the calculation of target mass and finite t=(p'-p)^2 corrections in hard processes which can be studied in the framework of the operator product expansion and involve momentum transfer from the initial to the final hadron state. Such corrections, which are usually referred to as kinematic, can be defined as contributions of operators of all twists that can be reduced to total derivatives of the leading twist operators. As the principal result, we provide a set of projection operators that pick up the "kinematic" part of an arbitrary flavor-nonsinglet twist-four operator in QCD. A complete expression is derived for the time-ordered product of two electromagnetic currents that includes all kinematic corrections to twist-four accuracy. The results are immediately applicable to the studies of deeply-virtual Compton scattering, transition gamma^*-> M gamma form factors and related processes. As a byproduct of this study, we find a series of "genuine" twist-four flavor-nonsinglet quark-antiquark-gluon operators which have the same anomalous dimensions as the leading twist quark-antiquark operators.

Finite-t and target mass corrections to deeply virtual Compton scattering

We carry out the first complete calculation of kinematic power corrections ~t/Q^2 and ~m^2/Q^2 to the helicity amplitudes of deeply virtual Compton scattering. This result removes an important source of uncertainties in the QCD predictions for intermediate momentum transfers Q^2 ~ 1-10 GeV^2 that are accessible in the existing and planned experiments. In particular the finite-t corrections are significant and must be taken into account in the data analysis.

Finite-t and target mass corrections to DVCS on a scalar target

Using the formalism developed in [1,2] we carry out the first complete calculation of kinematic power corrections to the helicity amplitudes of deeply-virtual Compton scattering to the twist-four accuracy for a study case of a (pseudo)scalar target. Our main result is that both finite-t, ~t/Q^2, and target mass, ~m^2/Q^2, twist-four kinematic power corrections turn out to be factorizable, at least to the leading order in the strong coupling. The structure of these corrections is discussed and a short model study of their numerical impact is presented.

Scale dependence of twist-three contributions to single spin asymmetries

We reexamine the scale dependence of twist-three correlation functions relevant for the single transverse spin asymmetry in the framework of collinear factorization. Evolution equations are derived for both the flavor-nonsinglet and flavor--singlet distributions and arbitrary parton momenta. Our results do not agree with the recent calculations of the evolution in the limit of vanishing gluon momentum. Possible sources for this discrepancy are identified.

Soft contribution to $B\to γ\ell ν_\ell$ and the $B$-meson distribution amplitude

The $B\to γ\ell ν_\ell$ decay at large energies of the photon receives a numerically important soft-overlap contribution which is formally of the next-to-leading order in the expansion in the inverse photon energy. We point out that this contribution can be calculated within the framework of heavy-quark expansion and soft-collinear effective theory, making use of dispersion relations and quark-hadron duality. The soft-overlap contribution is obtained in a full analogy with the similar contribution to the $γ^* γ\to π$ transition form factor. This result strengthens the case for using the $B\to γ\ell ν_\ell$ decay to constrain the $B$-meson distribution amplitude and determine its most important parameter, the inverse moment $λ_B$.

The calculation of baryon wave functions at small inter-quark separations is an ongoing effort within the QCDSF collaboration. We use new chiral perturbation theory results to perform the extrapolation to the physical point.

The results are applicable e.g. to the studies of deeply-virtual Compton scattering.

Higher twist parton distributions from light-cone wave functions

We explore the possibility to construct higher-twist parton distributions in a nucleon at some low reference scale from convolution integrals of the light-cone wave functions (WFs). To this end we introduce simple models for the four-particle nucleon WFs involving three valence quarks and a gluon with total orbital momentum zero, and estimate their normalization (WF at the origin) using QCD sum rules. We demonstrate that these WFs provide one with a reasonable description of both polarized and unpolarized gluon parton densities at large values of Bjorken variable x > 0.5. Twist-three parton distributions are then constructed as convolution integrals of qqqg and usual three-quark WFs. The cases of the polarized structure function g_2(x,Q^2) and single transverse spin asymmetries are considered in detail. We find that the so-called gluon-pole contribution to twist-three distributions relevant for single spin asymmetry vanishes in this model, but is generated perturbatively at higher scales by the evolution, in the spirit of GRV parton distributions.

Light Cone Sum Rules for the pi0-gamma*-gamma Form Factor Revisited

We provide a theoretical update of the calculations of the pi0-gamma*-gamma form factor in the LCSR framework, including up to six polynomials in the conformal expansion of the pion distribution amplitude and taking into account twist-six corrections related to the photon emission at large distances. The results are compared with the calculations of the B-> pi l nu decay and pion electromagnetic form factors in the same framework. Our conclusion is that the recent BaBar measurements of the pi0-gamma*-gamma form factor at large momentum transfers are consistent with QCD, although they do suggest that the pion DA may have more structure than usually assumed.

Nucleon and $N^* (1535)$ Distribution Amplitudes

The QCDSF collaboration has investigated the distribution amplitudes and wavefunction normalization constants of the nucleon and its parity partner, the $N^* (1535)$. New data at pion masses of approximately 270 MeV helps in significantly reducing errors in the extrapolation to the physical point.

Semileptonic form factors D to pi, K and B to pi, K from a fine lattice

We extract the form factors relevant for semileptonic decays of D and B mesons from a relativistic computation on a fine lattice in the quenched approximation. The lattice spacing is a=0.04 fm (corresponding to a^{-1}=4.97 GeV), which allows us to run very close to the physical B meson mass, and to reduce the systematic errors associated with the extrapolation in terms of a heavy quark expansion. For decays of D and D_s mesons, our results for the physical form factors at q^2=0 are as follows: f_+^{D to pi}(0)= 0.74(6)(4), f_+^{D to K}(0)= 0.78(5)(4) and f_+^{D_s to K}(0)=0.68(4)(3). Similarly, for B and B_s we find: f_+^{B to pi}(0)=0.27(7)(5), f_+^{B to K}(0)=0.32(6)(6) and f_+^{B_s to K}(0)=0.23(5)(4). We compare our results with other quenched and unquenched lattice calculations, as well as with light-cone sum rule predictions, finding good agreement.

Nucleon distribution amplitudes and proton decay matrix elements on the lattice

Baryon distribution amplitudes (DAs) are crucial for the theory of hard exclusive reactions. We present a calculation of the first few moments of the leading-twist nucleon DA within lattice QCD. In addition we deal with the normalization of the next-to-leading (twist-four) DAs. The matrix elements determining the latter quantities are also responsible for proton decay in Grand Unified Theories. Our lattice evaluation makes use of gauge field configurations generated with two flavors of clover fermions. The relevant operators are renormalized nonperturbatively with the final results given in the MSbar scheme. We find that the deviation of the leading-twist nucleon DA from its asymptotic form is less pronounced than sometimes claimed in the literature.

Light Cone Sum Rules for gamma* N -> Delta Transition Form Factors

A theoretical framework is suggested for the calculation of gamma* N -> Delta transition form factors using the light-cone sum rule approach. Leading-order sum rules are derived and compared with the existing experimental data. We find that the transition form factors in a several GeV region are dominated by the ``soft'' contributions that can be thought of as overlap integrals of the valence components of the hadron wave functions. The ``minus'' components of the quark fields contribute significantly to the result, which can be reinterpreted as large contributions of the quark orbital angular momentum

Integrability in QCD and beyond

Yang--Mills theories in four space-time dimensions possess a hidden symmetry which does not exhibit itself as a symmetry of classical Lagrangians but is only revealed on the quantum level. It turns out that the effective Yang--Mills dynamics in several important limits is described by completely integrable systems that prove to be related to the celebrated Heisenberg spin chain and its generalizations. In this review we explain the general phenomenon of complete integrability and its realization in several different situations. As a prime example, we consider in some detail the scale dependence of composite (Wilson) operators in QCD and super-Yang--Mills (SYM) theories. High-energy (Regge) behavior of scattering amplitudes in QCD is also discussed and provides one with another realization of the same phenomenon that differs, however, from the first example in essential details. As the third example, we address the low-energy effective action in a N=2 SYM theory which, contrary to the previous two cases, corresponds to a classical integrable model. Finally, we include a short overview of recent attempts to use gauge/string duality in order to relate integrability of Yang--Mills dynamics with the hidden symmetry of a string theory on a curved background.

Photon Distribution Amplitudes in QCD

We develop a consistent technique for the calculation of real photon emission in hard exclusive processes, which is based on the background field formalism and allows a convenient separation of hard electromagnetic and soft hadronic components of the photon. The latter ones are related to matrix-elements of light-cone operators in the electromagnetic background field and can be parametrized in terms of photon distribution amplitudes. We construct a complete set of photon distribution amplitudes up to and including twist-4, for both chirality-conserving and chirality-violating operators. The distribution amplitudes involve several nonperturbative parameters and, most importantly, the magnetic susceptibility of the quark condensate. We review and update previous estimates of the susceptibility and also give new estimates of parameters describing higher-twist amplitudes from QCD sum rules.

Evolution equation for the structure function g_2(x,Q^2)

We perform an extensive study of the scale dependence of flavor-singlet contributions to the structure function g_2(x,Q^2) in polarized deep-inelastic scattering. We find that the mixing between quark-antiquark-gluon and three-gluon twist-3 operators only involves the three-gluon operator with the lowest anomalous dimension and is weak in other cases. This means, effectively, that only those three-gluon operators with the lowest anomalous dimension for each moment are important, and allows to formulate a simple two-component parton-like description of g_2(x,Q^2) in analogy with the conventional description of twist-2 parton distributions. The similar simplification was observed earlier for the nonsinglet distributions, although the reason is in our case different.

Evolution of twist-three parton distributions in QCD beyond the large N_c limit

We formulate a consistent 1/N_c^2 expansion of the QCD evolution equations for the twist-three quark distributions g_2(x,Q^2), h_L(x,Q^2) and e(x,Q^2) based on the interpretation of the evolution as a three-particle quantum-mechanical problem with hermitian Hamiltonian. Each distribution amplitude can be decomposed in contributions of partonic components with DGLAP-type scale dependence. We calculate the 1/N_c^2 corrections to the evolution of the dominant component with the lowest anomalous dimension - the only one that survives in the large-N_c limit - and observe a good agreement with the exact numerical results for N_c=3. The 1/N_c^2 admixture of operators with higher anomalous dimensions is shown to be concentrated at a few lowest partonic components and in general is rather weak.

Pion Form Factor in QCD at Intermediate Momentum Transfers

We present a quantitative analysis of the electromagnetic pion form factor in the light-cone sum rule approach, including radiative corrections and higher-twist effects. The comparison to the existing data favors the asymptotic profile of the pion distribution amplitude and allows to estimate the deviation: $(\int du/u ϕ_π(u))/ (\int du/u ϕ^{\rm as}_π(u))=$ 1.1$\pm$ 0.1 at the scale 1 GeV. Special attention is payed to the precise definition and interplay of soft and hard contributions at intermediate momentum transfer, and to matching of the sum rule to the perturbative QCD prediction. We observe a strong numerical cancellation between the soft (end point) contribution and power suppressed hard contributions of higher twist, so that the total nonperturbative correction to the usual pQCD result turns out to be of order 30% for $Q^2\sim 1$ GeV$^2$.

The Operator Product Expansion, Non-perturbative Couplings and the Landau Pole: Lessons from the O(N) $σ$-Model

We obtain the operator product expansion of the self-energy in the O(N) non-linear $σ$-model to all orders in the coupling and the large momentum, and to next-to-leading order in 1/N. In the light of this result we discuss recent suggestions that there may be additional power corrections from short distances, associated with defining the coupling constant non-perturbatively. The non-linear $σ$-model provides no evidence for such `non-standard' power corrections. We also find that the OPE converges for sufficiently large external momentum, presumably because there are no multi-particle thresholds at arbitrarily high energies in the 1/N expansion.

Use and Misuse of QCD Sum Rules in Heavy-to-light Transitions: the Decay $B\toρe ν$ Reexamined

The existing calculations of the form factors describing the decay $B\toρe ν$ from QCD sum rules have yielded conflicting results at small values of the invariant mass squared of the lepton pair. We demonstrate that the disagreement originates from the failure of the short-distance expansion to describe the $ρ$ meson distribution amplitude in the region where almost the whole momentum is carried by one of the constituents. This limits the applicability of QCD sum rules based on the short-distance expansion of a three-point correlation function to heavy-to-light transitions and calls for an expansion around the light-cone, as realized in the light-cone sum rule approach. We derive and update light-cone sum rules for all the semileptonic form factors, using recent results on the $ρ$ meson distribution amplitudes. The results are presented in detail together with a careful analysis of the uncertainties, including estimates of higher-twist effects, and compared to lattice calculations and recent CLEO measurements. We also derive a set of ``improved'' three-point sum rules, in which some of the problems of the short-distance expansion are avoided and whose results agree to good accuracy with those from light-cone sum rules.

Resummation of threshold corrections in QCD to power accuracy: the Drell-Yan cross section as a case study

Resummation of large infrared logarithms in perturbation theory can, in certain circumstances, enhance the sensitivity to small gluon momenta and introduce spurious nonperturbative contributions. In particular, different procedures -- equivalent in perturbation theory -- to organize this resummation can differ by $1/Q$ power corrections. The question arises whether one can formulate resummation procedures that are explicitly consistent with the infrared behaviour of finite-order Feynman diagrams. We explain how this problem can be treated and resolved in Drell-Yan (lepton pair) production and briefly discuss more complicated cases, such as top quark production and event shape variables in the $e^+e^-$ annihilation.

The $ρ$ Meson Light-Cone Distribution Amplitudes of Leading Twist Revisited

We give a complete re-analysis of the leading twist quark-antiquark light-cone distribution amplitudes of longitudinal and transverse $ρ$ mesons. We derive Wandzura-Wilczek type relations between different distributions and update the coefficients in their conformal expansion using QCD sum rules including next-to-leading order radiative corrections. We find that the distribution amplitudes of quarks inside longitudinally and transversely polarized $ρ$ mesons have a similar shape, which is in contradiction to previous analyses.

Resummation of Running Coupling Effects in Semileptonic B Meson Decays and Extraction of $|V_{cb}|$

We present a determination of $|V_{cb}|$ from semileptonic B decays that includes resummation of supposedly large perturbative corrections, originating from the running of the strong coupling. We argue that the low value of the BLM scale found previously for inclusive decays is a manifestation of the renormalon divergence of the perturbative series starting already in third order. A reliable determination of $|V_{cb}|$ from inclusive decays is possible if one either uses a short-distance b quark mass or eliminates all unphysical mass parameters in terms of measured observables, such that all infra-red contributions of order $1/m_b$ cancel explicitly. We find that using the $\overline{\rm MS}$ running mass significantly reduces the perturbative coefficients already in low orders. For a semileptonic branching ratio of $10.9\%$ we obtain $|V_{cb}|(τ_B/1.50\,{\rm ps})^{1/2}= 0.041\pm 0.002$ from inclusive decays, in good agreement with the value extracted from exclusive decays.

$D^*Dπ$ and $B^*Bπ$ couplings in QCD

We calculate the $D^*Dπ$ and $B^*Bπ$ couplings using QCD sum rules on the light-cone. In this approach, the large-distance dynamics is incorporated in a set of pion wave functions. We take into account two-particle and three-particle wave functions of twist 2, 3 and 4. The resulting values of the coupling constants are $g_{D^*Dπ}= 12.5\pm 1$ and $g_{B^*Bπ}= 29\pm 3 $. From this we predict the partial width $ Γ(D^{*+} \ra D^0 π^+ )=32 \pm 5~ keV $. We also discuss the soft-pion limit of the sum rules which is equivalent to the external axial field approach employed in earlier calculations. Furthermore, using $g_{B^*Bπ}$ and $g_{D^*Dπ}$ the pole dominance model for the $ B \ra π$ and $D\ra π$ semileptonic form factors is compared with the direct calculation of these form factors in the same framework of light-cone sum rules.

Charm Quark Mass Dependence of QCD Corrections to Nonleptonic Inclusive B Decays

We calculate the radiative corrections to the nonleptonic inclusive B decay mode $b\rightarrow c\bar u d$ taking into account the charm quark mass. Compared to the massless case, corrections resulting from a nonvanishing c quark mass increase the nonleptonic rate by (4--8)\%, depending on the renormalization point. As a by--product of our calculation, we obtain an analytic expression for the radiative correction to the semileptonic decay $b\rightarrow uτ\barν$ taking into account the $τ$ lepton mass, and estimate the c quark mass effects on the nonleptonic decay mode $b\rightarrow c\bar c s$.

Exclusive Radiative B-Decays in the Light-Cone QCD Sum Rule Approach

We carry out a detailed study of exclusive radiative rare $B$-decays in the framework of the QCD sum rules on the light cone, which combines the traditional QCD sum rule technique with the description of final state vector mesons in terms of the light-cone wave functions of increasing twist. The decays considered are: $B_{u,d} \to K^* +γ, B_{u,d}\to ρ+γ, B_d\to ω+γ$ and the corresponding decays of the $B_s$ mesons, $B_s\to ϕ+γ$ and $B_s\to K^*+γ$. Based on our estimate of the transition form factor $F_1^{B \to K^*\pg}(0) =0.32\pm0.05$, we find for the branching ratio $BR(B \to K^* + γ) = (4.8\pm 1.5)\times 10^{-5}$, which is in agreement with the observed value measured by the CLEO collaboration. We present detailed estimates for the ratios of the radiative decay form factors, which are then used to predict the rates for the exclusive radiative B-decays listed above. This in principle allows the extraction of the CKM matrix element $|V_{td}|$ from the penguin-dominated CKM-suppressed radiative decays when they are measured. We give a detailed discussion of the dependence of the form factors on the $b$-quark mass and on the momentum transfer, as well as their interrelation with the CKM-suppressed semileptonic decay form factors in $B\to ρ+\ell+ν$, which we also calculate in our approach.

Next--to--Leading Order Corrections to Meson Masses in the Heavy Quark Effective Theory

We use the QCD sum rule approach to calculate the splitting between vector and pseudoscalar mesons containing one light and one heavy quark, and the kinetic energy of the heavy quark. Our result for the splitting induced by the chromomagnetic interaction agrees to the experimental data on charm and beauty mesons. For the matrix element of the kinetic energy operator, we obtain the value $K=-(0.60\pm 0.10)\, {\rm GeV}^2$.
