Emergent neutrinos from heavy messengers

Fermionic bound states (mesinos) of messengers can play the role of right-handed neutrinos and due to their heavy masses they can realize the seesaw mechanism providing light and heavy sterile neutrinos. We study simple models with a single mesino to present the proof of principle. We extend our analysis to three mesino states where after the seesaw mechanism, three light and several heavy sterile neutrinos are obtained.

Lifetimes of light stringy states

In this paper, we evaluate the lifetime of the light stringy states that emerge in intersecting D-brane realisations of the Standard Model. For concreteness, we focus on a light massive scalar decaying into two massless fermions. Given the present experimental lower bounds of the string scale, we extrapolate the lifetime as a function of the intersection angles to very small angles in order to have states with lifetimes of the order of the universe. That provides an alluring example of a massive, very weakly interacting field with a huge lifetime, proposing itself as a potential dark matter candidate.

Energy-Momentum portal to dark matter and emergent gravity

We propose a new scenario where dark matter belongs to a secluded sector coupled to the Standard Model through energy--momentum tensors. Our model is motivated by constructions where gravity {\it emerges} from a hidden sector, the graviton being identified by the kinetic term of the fields in the secluded sector. Supposing that the lighter particle of the secluded sector is the dark component of the Universe, we show that we can produce it in a sufficiently large amount despite the suppressed couplings of the theory, thanks to large temperatures of the thermal bath in the early stage of the Universe.

Revisiting light stringy states in view of the 750 GeV diphoton excess

We investigate light massive string states that appear at brane intersections. They replicate the massless spectrum in a richer fashion and may be parametrically lighter than standard Regge excitations. We identify the first few physical states and determine their BRST invariant vertex operators. In the supersymmetric case we reconstruct the super-multiplet structure. We then compute some simple interactions, such as the decay rate of a massive scalar or vector into two massless fermions. Finally we suggest an alternative interpretation of the 750 GeV diphoton excess at LHC in terms of a light massive string state, a replica of the Standard Model Higgs.

Discrete symmetries from hidden sectors

We study the presence of abelian discrete symmetries in globally consistent orientifold compactifications based on rational conformal field theory. We extend previous work [1] by allowing the discrete symmetries to be a linear combination of U(1) gauge factors of the visible as well as the hidden sector. This more general ansatz significantly increases the probability of finding a discrete symmetry in the low energy effective action. Applied to globally consistent MSSM-like Gepner constructions we find multiple models that allow for matter parity or Baryon triality.

Light stringy states

We carefully study the spectrum of open strings localized at the intersections of D6-branes and identify the lowest massive 'twisted' states and their vertex operators, paying particular attention to the signs of the intersection angles. We argue that the masses of the lightest states scale as M^2 ~ θM^2_s and can thus be parametrically smaller than the string scale. Relying on previous analyses, we compute scattering amplitudes of massless 'twisted' open strings and study their factorization, confirming the presence of the light massive states as sub-dominant poles in one of the channels.

Production of light stringy states

We discuss the direct production of light stringy states. Those states correspond to the lightest stringy excitations localized at the intersection of two D-brane stacks and their mass can be parametrically smaller than the string scale. Thus in a low string scale scenario one may observe stringy signatures at LHC even in the absence of the usual string resonances. We compute the tree level string scattering amplitude involving two gauge bosons and two such light stringy states. We give the squared amplitude summed over all polarization and gauge configuration and eventually apply the result to the quark sector of a D-brane realization of the Standard Model.

String Constraints on Discrete Symmetries in MSSM Type II Quivers

We study the presence of discrete gauge symmetries in D-brane semi-realistic compactifications. After establishing the constraints on the transformation behaviour of the chiral matter for the presence of a discrete gauge symmetry we perform a systematic search for discrete gauge symmetries within local semi-realistic D-brane realizations, based on four D-brane stacks, of the MSSM and the MSSM with three right-handed neutrinos. The systematic search reveals that Proton hexality, a discrete symmetry which ensures the absence of R-parity violating terms as well as the absence of dangerous dimension 5 proton decay operators, is only rarely realized. Moreover, none of the semi-realistic local D-brane configurations exhibit any family dependent discrete gauge symmetry.

On closed-string twist-field correlators and their open-string descendants

In a recent paper we have proposed the possibility that the lightest massive string states could be identified with open strings living at intersections of D-branes forming small angles. In this note, we reconsider the relevant twist-field correlation functions and perform the analysis of the sub-dominant physical poles in the various channels. Our derivation is new in that it is based on the algebraic procedure for the construction of open string models starting from their closed-string `parents' rather than on the stress-tensor method. We also indicate possible generalizations and diverse applications of our approach.

SU(5) D-brane realizations, Yukawa couplings and proton stability

We discuss SU(5) Grand Unified Theories in the context of orientifold compactifications. Specifically, we investigate two and three D-brane stack realizations of the Georgi-Glashow and the flipped SU(5) model and analyze them with respect to their Yukawa couplings. As pointed out in arXiv:0909.0271 the most economical Georgi-Glashow realization based on two stacks generically suffers from a disastrous large proton decay rate. We show that allowing for an additional U(1) D-brane stack this as well as other phenomenological problems can be resolved. We exemplify with globally consistent Georgi-Glashow models based on RCFT that these D-brane quivers can be indeed embedded in a global setting. These globally consistent realizations admit rigid O(1) instantons inducing the perturbatively missing coupling 10105^H. Finally we show that flipped SU(5) D-brane realizations even with multiple U(1) D-brane stacks are plagued by severe phenomenological drawbacks which generically cannot be overcome.

On gauge couplings and thresholds in Type I Gepner models and otherwise

We derive general formulae for tree level gauge couplings and their one-loop thresholds in Type I models based on genuinely interacting internal N=2 SCFT's, such as Gepner models. We illustrate our procedure in the simple yet non-trivial instance of the Quintic. We briefly address the phenomenologically more relevant issue of determining the Weinberg angle in this class of models. Finally we initiate the study of the correspondence between `magnetized' or `coisotropic' D-branes in Gepner models and twisted representations of the underlying N=2 SCA.
