Categorical Torelli theorems: results and open problems

We survey some recent results concerning the so called Categorical Torelli problem. This is to say how one can reconstruct a smooth projective variety up to isomorphism, by using the homological properties of special admissible subcategories of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves of such a variety. The focus is on Enriques surfaces, prime Fano threefolds and cubic fourfolds.

Stability conditions in families

We develop a theory of Bridgeland stability conditions and moduli spaces of semistable objects for a family of varieties. Our approach is based on and generalizes previous work by Abramovich-Polishchuk, Kuznetsov, Lieblich, and Piyaratne-Toda. Our notion includes openness of stability, semistable reduction, a support property uniformly across the family, and boundedness of semistable objects. We show that such a structure exists whenever stability conditions are known to exist on the fibers. Our main application is the generalization of Mukai's theory for moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on K3 surfaces to moduli spaces of Bridgeland semistable objects in the Kuznetsov component associated to a cubic fourfold. This leads to the extension of theorems by Addington-Thomas and Huybrechts on the derived category of special cubic fourfolds, to a new proof of the integral Hodge conjecture, and to the construction of an infinite series of unirational locally complete families of polarized hyperkähler manifolds of K3 type. Other applications include the deformation-invariance of Donaldson-Thomas invariants counting Bridgeland stable objects on Calabi-Yau threefolds, and a method for constructing stability conditions on threefolds via degeneration.

Uniqueness of enhancements for derived and geometric categories

We prove that the derived categories of abelian categories have unique enhancements -- all of them, the unbounded, bounded, bounded above and bounded below derived categories. The unseparated and left completed derived categories of a Grothendieck abelian category are also shown to have unique enhancements. Finally we show that the derived category of complexes with quasi-coherent cohomology and the category of perfect complexes have unique enhancements for quasi-compact and quasi-separated schemes.

Localizations of the category of $A_\infty$ categories and internal Homs

We prove that the localizations of the categories of dg categories, of cohomologically unital and strictly unital $A_\infty$ categories with respect to the corresponding classes of quasi-equivalences are all equivalent. Moreover we show that the last two localizations are equivalent to the corresponding quotients by the relation of being isomorphic in the cohomology of the $A_\infty$ category of $A_\infty$ functors. As an application we give a complete proof of a claim by Kontsevich stating that the category of internal Homs for two dg categories can be described as the category of strictly unital $A_\infty$ functors between them.

The Space of Stability Conditions on Abelian Threefolds, and on some Calabi-Yau Threefolds

We describe a connected component of the space of stability conditions on abelian threefolds, and on Calabi-Yau threefolds obtained as (the crepant resolution of) a finite quotient of an abelian threefold. Our proof includes the following essential steps: 1. We simultaneously strengthen a conjecture by the first two authors and Toda, and prove that it follows from a more natural and seemingly weaker statement. This conjecture is a Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality involving the third Chern character of "tilt-stable" two-term complexes on smooth projective threefolds; we extend it from complexes of tilt-slope zero to arbitrary tilt-slope. 2. We show that this stronger conjecture implies the so-called support property of Bridgeland stability conditions, and the existence of an explicit open subset of the space of stability conditions. 3. We prove our conjecture for abelian threefolds, thereby giving reproving and generalizing a result by Maciocia and Piyaratne. Important in our approach is a more systematic understanding on the behaviour of quadratic inequalities for semistable objects under wall-crossing, closely related to the support property.

ACM bundles on cubic threefolds

We study ACM bundles on cubic threefolds by using derived category techniques. We prove that the moduli space of stable Ulrich bundles of any rank is always non-empty by showing that it is birational to a moduli space of semistable torsion sheaves on the projective plane endowed with the action of a Clifford algebra. We describe this birational isomorphism via wall-crossing in the space of Bridgeland stability conditions, in the example of instanton sheaves of minimal charge.

Fourier-Mukai functors in the supported case

We prove that exact functors between the categories of perfect complexes supported on projective schemes are of Fourier--Mukai type if the functor satisfies a condition weaker than being fully faithful. We also get generalizations of the results in the literature in the case without support conditions. Some applications are discussed and, along the way, we prove that the category of perfect supported complexes has a strongly unique enhancement.

Fano varieties of cubic fourfolds containing a plane

We prove that the Fano variety of lines of a generic cubic fourfold containing a plane is isomorphic to a moduli space of twisted stable complexes on a K3 surface. On the other hand, we show that the Fano varieties are always birational to moduli spaces of twisted stable coherent sheaves on a K3 surface. The moduli spaces of complexes and of sheaves are related by wall-crossing in the derived category of twisted sheaves on the corresponding K3 surface.

Singular cubic fourfolds containing a plane

In this paper we consider cubic 4-folds containing a plane whose discriminant curve is a reduced nodal plane sextic. In particular, we describe the singular points of such cubic 4-folds and we give an estimate of the rank of the free abelian group generated by the equivalence classes of the algebraic cycles of codimension 2. Moreover, we describe some conditions on the geometry of the plane sextics so that all the associated cubic 4-folds are singular and we construct a family of smooth rational cubic 4-folds whose discriminant curve is reduced but reducible.

Stability conditions for generic K3 categories

A K3 category is by definition a Calabi-Yau category of dimension two. Geometrically K3 categories occur as bounded derived categories of (twisted) coherent sheaves on K3 or abelian surfaces. A K3 category is generic if there are no spherical objects (or just one up to shift). We study stability conditions on K3 categories as introduced by Bridgeland and prove his conjecture about the topology of the stability manifold and the autoequivalences group for generic twisted projective K3, abelian surfaces, and K3 surfaces with trivial Picard group.

preprint2005arXiv

Equivalences of twisted K3 surfaces

We prove that two derived equivalent twisted K3 surfaces have isomorphic periods. The converse is shown for K3 surfaces with large Picard number. It is also shown that all possible twisted derived equivalences between arbitrary twisted K3 surfaces form a subgroup of the group of all orthogonal transformations of the cohomology of a K3 surface. The passage from twisted derived equivalences to an action on the cohomology is made possible by twisted Chern characters that will be introduced for arbitrary smooth projective varieties.
