Open book decompositions versus prime factorizations of closed, oriented 3-manifolds

Let MM be a closed, oriented, connected 3--manifold and (B,π)(B,π) an open book decomposition on MM with page ΣΣ and monodromy φφ. It is easy to see that the first Betti number of ΣΣ is bounded below by the number of S2×S1S^2\times S^1--factors in the prime factorization of MM. Our main result is that equality is realized if and only if φφ is trivial and MM is a connected sum of S2×S1S^2\times S^1's. We also give some applications of our main result, such as a new proof of the result by Birman and Menasco that if the closure of a braid with nn strands is the unlink with nn components then the braid is trivial.

Stein fillable contact 3-manifolds and positive open books of genus one

A two-dimensional open book (S,h) determines a closed, oriented three-manifold Y(S,h) and a contact structure C(S,h) on Y(S,h). The contact structure C(S,h) is Stein fillable if h is positive, i.e. h can be written as a product of right-handed Dehn twists. Work of Wendl implies that when S has genus zero the converse statement holds, that is if C(S,h) is Stein fillable then h is positive. On the other hand, results by Wand and by Baker, Etnyre and Van Horn-Morris imply the existence of counterexamples to the converse statement with S of arbitrary genus strictly greater than one. The main purpose of this paper is to prove the converse statement under the assumption that S is a one-holed torus and Y(S,h) is a Heegaard Floer L-space.

Contact surgery and transverse invariants

We derive new existence results for tight contact structures on certain 3-manifolds which can be presented as surgery along specific knots in S^3. Indeed, we extend our earlier results on knots with maximal Thurston-Bennequin number being equal to 2g-1 to knots for which the maximal self-linking number satisfies the same equality. In the argument (using contact surgery) we define an invariant for transverse knots in contact 3-manifolds under the assumption that either the knot is null-homologous or the 3-manifold has no S^1xS^2-factor in its prime decomposition, and we study its properties using the Ozsvath-Szabo contact invariant.

An infinite family of tight, not semi-fillable contact three-manifolds

We prove that an infinite family of virtually overtwisted tight contact structures discovered by Honda on certain circle bundles over surfaces admit no symplectic semi-fillings. The argument uses results of Mrowka, Ozsvath and Yu on the translation-invariant solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equations on cylinders and the non-triviality of the Kronheimer-Mrowka monopole invariants of symplectic fillings.

Ozsvath-Szabo invariants and tight contact three-manifolds, I

Let S^3_r(K) be the oriented 3--manifold obtained by rational r-surgery on a knot K in S^3. Using the contact Ozsvath-Szabo invariants we prove, for a class of knots K containing all the algebraic knots, that S^3_r(K) carries positive, tight contact structures for every r not= 2g_s(K)-1, where g_s(K) is the slice genus of K. This implies, in particular, that the Brieskorn spheres -Sigma(2,3,4) and -Sigma(2,3,3) carry tight, positive contact structures. As an application of our main result we show that for each m in N there exists a Seifert fibered rational homology 3-sphere M_m carrying at least m pairwise non-isomorphic tight, nonfillable contact structures.

Symplectic fillings and positive scalar curvature

Let X be a 4-manifold with contact boundary. We prove that the monopole invariants of X introduced by Kronheimer and Mrowka vanish under the following assumptions: (i) a connected component of the boundary of X carries a metric with positive scalar curvature and (ii) either b_2^+(X)>0 or the boundary of X is disconnected. As an application we show that the Poincare homology 3-sphere, oriented as the boundary of the positive E_8 plumbing, does not carry symplectically semi-fillable contact structures. This proves, in particular, a conjecture of Gompf, and provides the first example of a 3-manifold which is not symplectically semi-fillable. Using work of Froyshov, we also prove a result constraining the topology of symplectic fillings of rational homology 3-spheres having positive scalar curvature metrics.
