Periodic geodesics in singular spaces

We extend the classical result of Lyusternik and Fet on the existence of closed geodesics to singular spaces. We show that if $X$ is a compact geodesic metric space satisfying the CAT($κ$) condition for some fixed $κ>0$ and $π_n(X)\ne 0$ for some $n>0$ then $X$ has a periodic geodesic. This condition is satisfied for example by locally CAT($κ$) manifolds. Our result applies more generally to compact locally uniquely geodesic spaces.

Polynomial growth and asymptotic dimension

Bonamy et al \cite{BBEGLPS} showed that graphs of polynomial growth have finite asymptotic dimension. We refine their result showing that a graph of polynomial growth strictly less than $n^{k+1}$ has asymptotic dimension at most $k$. As a corollary Riemannian manifolds of bounded geometry and polynomial growth strictly less than $n^{k+1}$ have asymptotic dimension at most $k$. We show also that there are graphs of growth $<n^{1+ε}$ for any $ε>0$ and infinite asymptotic Assouad-Nagata dimension.

Uryson width and volume

We give a short proof of a theorem of Guth relating volume of balls and Uryson width. The same approach applies to Hausdorff content implying a recent result of Liokumovich-Lishak-Nabutovsky-Rotman. We show also that for any $C>0$ there is a Riemannian metric $g$ on a 3-sphere such that $\text{vol}(S^3,g)=1$ and for any map $f:S^3\to \mathbb{R}^2$ there is some $x\in \mathbb{R}^2$ for which $\text{diam}(f^{-1}(x))>C$-answering a question of Guth.

Short loops in surfaces with a circle boundary component

It is a classical theorem of Loewner that the systole of a Riemannian torus can be bounded in terms of its area. We answer a question of a similar flavor of Robert Young showing that if $T$ is a Riemannian 2-torus with boundary in $\mathbb R ^n$, such that the boundary curve is a standard unit circle, then the length of the shortest non-contractible loop in $T$ is bounded in terms of the area of $T$.

Group splittings and asymptotic topology

It is a consequence of the theorem of Stallings on groups with many ends that splittings over finite groups are preserved by quasi-isometries. In this paper we use asymptotic topology to show that group splittings are preserved by quasi-isometries in many cases. Roughly speaking we show that splittings are preserved under quasi-isometries when the vertex groups are fundamental groups of aspherical manifolds (or more generally `coarse PD(n)-groups') and the edge groups are `smaller' than the vertex groups.
