Uniformly Sampled Polar and Cylindrical Grid Approach for 2D, 3D Image Reconstruction using Algebraic Algorithm

Image reconstruction by Algebraic Methods (AM) outperforms the transform methods in situations where the data collection procedure is constrained by time, space, and radiation dose. AM algorithms can also be applied for the cases where these constraints are not present but their high computational and storage requirement prohibit their actual breakthrough in such cases. In the present work, we propose a novel Uniformly Sampled Polar/Cylindrical Grid (USPG/USCG) discretization scheme to reduce the computational and storage burden of algebraic methods. The symmetries of USPG/USCG are utilized to speed up the calculations of the projection coefficients. In addition, we also offer an efficient approach for USPG to Cartesian Grid (CG) transformation for the visualization. The Multiplicative Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (MART) has been used to determine the field function of the suggested grids. Experimental projections data of a frog and Cu-Lump have been exercised to validate the proposed approach. A variety of image quality measures have been evaluated to check the accuracy of the reconstruction. Results indicate that the current strategies speed up (when compared to CG-based algorithms) the reconstruction process by a factor of 2.5 and reduce the memory requirement by the factor p, the number of projections used in the reconstruction.

Bistability and chaos in Taylor-Green dynamo

Using direct numerical simulations we study dynamo action under the Taylor-Green forcing with Prandtl number less than one. We observe bistability with a weak magnetic field branch and a strong magnetic field branch. Both the dynamo branches undergo subcritical dynamo transition. We also observe host of dynamo states including constant, periodic, quasiperiodic, and chaotic magnetic fields. One of the chaotic state originates through a quasiperiodic route with phase locking, while another chaotic attractor appears to follow Newhouse-Ruelle-Takens route to chaos. We also observe intermittent transitions among quasiperiodic and chaotic states for a given Taylor-Green forcing.

Dynamics of zero-Prandtl number convection near the onset

In this paper we present various convective states of zero-Prandtl number Rayleigh-Bénard convection using direct numerical simulations (DNS) and a 27-mode low-dimensional model containing the energetic modes of DNS. The origin of these convective states have been explained using bifurcation analysis. The system is chaotic at the onset itself with three coexisting chaotic attractors that are born at two codimension-2 bifurcation points. One of the bifurcation points with a single zero eigenvalue and a complex pair $(0,\pm i ω)$ generates chaotic attractors and associated periodic, quasiperiodic, and phase-locked states that are related to the wavy rolls observed in experiments and simulations. The frequency of the wavy rolls are in general agreement with $ω$ of the above eigenvalue of the stability matrix. The other bifurcation point with a double zero eigenvalue produces the other set of chaotic attractors and ordered states such as squares, asymmetric squares, oscillating asymmetric squares, relaxation oscillations with intermediate squares, some of which are common to the 13-mode model of Pal et al.(2009).

Bifurcation and chaos in zero Prandtl number convection

We present the detailed bifurcation structure and associated flow patterns near the onset of zero Prandtl number Rayleigh Bénard convection. We employ both direct numerical simulation and a low-dimensional model ensuring qualitative agreement between the two. Various flow patterns originate from a stationary square observed at a higher Rayleigh number through a series of bifurcations starting from a pitchfork followed by a Hopf and finally a homoclinic bifurcation as the Rayleigh number is reduced to the critical value. Global chaos, intermittency, and crises are observed near the onset.

Patterns and bifurcations in low-Prandtl number Rayleigh-Benard convection

We present a detailed bifurcation structure and associated flow patterns for low-Prandtl number ($P=0.0002, 0.002, 0.005, 0.02$) Rayleigh-Bénard convection near its onset. We use both direct numerical simulations and a 30-mode low-dimensional model for this study. We observe that low-Prandtl number (low-P) convection exhibits similar patterns and chaos as zero-P convection \cite{pal:2009}, namely squares, asymmetric squares, oscillating asymmetric squares, relaxation oscillations, and chaos. At the onset of convection, low-P convective flows have stationary 2D rolls and associated stationary and oscillatory asymmetric squares in contrast to zero-P convection where chaos appears at the onset itself. The range of Rayleigh number for which stationary 2D rolls exist decreases rapidly with decreasing Prandtl number. Our results are in qualitative agreement with results reported earlier.
