Influence of Rashba spin-orbit and Rabi couplings on the miscibility and ground state phases of binary Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the miscibility properties and ground state phases of two-component spin-orbit (SO) coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in a harmonic trap with strong axial confinement. By numerically solving the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations in the two-dimensional setting, we analyze the SO-coupled BECs for two possible permutations of the intra- and interspecies interactions, namely (i) weak intra- and weak interspecies interactions (W-W) and (ii) weak intra- and strong interspecies interactions (W-S). Considering the density overlap integral as a miscibility order parameter, we investigate the miscible-immiscible transition by varying the coupling parameters. We obtain various ground state phases, including plane wave, half quantum vortex, elongated plane wave, and different stripe wave patterns for W-W interactions. For finite Rabi coupling, an increase in SO coupling strength leads to the transition from the fully miscible to the partially miscible state. We also characterize different ground states in the coupling parameter space using the root mean square sizes of the condensate. The spin density vector for the ground state phases exhibits density, quadrupole and dipole like spin polarizations. For the W-S interaction, in addition to that observed in the W-W case, we witness semi vortex, mixed mode, and shell-like immiscible phases. We notice a wide variety of spin polarizations, such as density, dipole, quadrupole, symbiotic, necklace, and stripe-like patterns for the W-S case. A detailed investigation in the coupling parameter space indicates immiscible to miscible state phase transition upon varying the Rabi coupling for a fixed Rashba SO coupling. The critical Rabi coupling for the immiscible-miscible phase transition decreases upon increasing the SO coupling strength.

Dynamics of reversals and condensates in 2D Kolmogorov flows

We present direct numerical simulations of the different two-dimensional flow regimes generated by a constant spatially periodic forcing balanced by viscous dissipation and large scale drag with a dimensionless damping rate $1/Rh$. The linear response to the forcing is a $6\times6$ square array of counter-rotating vortices, which is stable when the Reynolds number $Re$ or $Rh$ are small. After identifying the sequence of bifurcations that lead to a spatially and temporally chaotic regime of the flow when $Re$ and $Rh$ are increased, we study the transitions between the different turbulent regimes observed for large $Re$ by varying $Rh$. A large scale circulation at the box size (the condensate state) is the dominant mode in the limit of vanishing large scale drag ($Rh$ large). When $Rh$ is decreased, the condensate becomes unstable and a regime with random reversals between two large scale circulations of opposite signs is generated. It involves a bimodal probability density function of the large scale velocity that continuously bifurcates to a Gaussian distribution when $Rh$ is decreased further.

Energy spectra and fluxes for Rayleigh-Benard convection

We compute the spectra and fluxes of the velocity and temperature fields in Rayleigh-Bénard convection in turbulent regime for a wide range of Prandtl numbers using pseudo-spectral simulations on $512^3$ grids. Our spectral and flux results support the Kolmogorov-Obukhov (KO) scaling for zero Prandtl number and low Prandtl number ($P=0.02$) convection. The KO scaling for the velocity field in zero-Prandtl number and low-Prandtl number convection is because of the weak buoyancy in the inertial range (buoyancy is active only at the very low wavenumbers). We also observe that for intermediate Prandtl numbers ($P=0.2$) the KO scaling fits better with the numerical results than the Bolgiano-Obukhov (BO) scaling. For large Prandtl number ($P=6.8$), the spectra and flux results are somewhat inconclusive on the validity of the KO or BO scaling, yet the BO scaling is preferred over the KO scaling for these cases. The numerical results for P=1 is rather inconclusive.

Patterns and bifurcations in low-Prandtl number Rayleigh-Benard convection

We present a detailed bifurcation structure and associated flow patterns for low-Prandtl number ($P=0.0002, 0.002, 0.005, 0.02$) Rayleigh-Bénard convection near its onset. We use both direct numerical simulations and a 30-mode low-dimensional model for this study. We observe that low-Prandtl number (low-P) convection exhibits similar patterns and chaos as zero-P convection \cite{pal:2009}, namely squares, asymmetric squares, oscillating asymmetric squares, relaxation oscillations, and chaos. At the onset of convection, low-P convective flows have stationary 2D rolls and associated stationary and oscillatory asymmetric squares in contrast to zero-P convection where chaos appears at the onset itself. The range of Rayleigh number for which stationary 2D rolls exist decreases rapidly with decreasing Prandtl number. Our results are in qualitative agreement with results reported earlier.
