Nanoscale axial position and orientation measurement of hexagonal boron nitride quantum emitters using a tunable nanophotonic environment

Color centers in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have emerged as promising candidates for single-photon emitters (SPEs) due to their bright emission characteristics at room temperature. In contrast to mono- and few-layered hBN, color centers in multi-layered flakes show superior emission characteristics such as higher saturation counts and spectral stability. Here, we report a method for determining both the axial position and three-dimensional dipole orientation of SPEs in thick hBN flakes by tuning the photonic local density of states using vanadium dioxide (VO2), a phase change material. Emitters under study exhibit a strong surface-normal dipole orientation, providing some insight on the atomic structure of hBN SPEs, deeply embedded in thick crystals. We have optimized a hot pickup technique to reproducibly transfer flakes of hBN from VO2 onto SiO2/Si substrate and relocated the same emitters. Our approach serves as a practical method to systematically characterize SPEs in hBN prior to integration in quantum photonics systems.

Coherence-Driven Topological Transition in Quantum Metamaterials

We introduce and theoretically demonstrate a quantum metamaterial made of dense ultracold neutral atoms loaded into an inherently defect-free artificial crystal of light, immune to well-known critical chal- lenges inevitable in conventional solid-state platforms. We demonstrate an all-optical control on ultrafast time scales over the photonic topological transition of the isofrequency contour from an open to close topology at the same frequency. This atomic lattice quantum metamaterial enables a dynamic manipula- tion of the decay rate of a probe quantum emitter by more than an order of magnitude. This proposal may lead to practically lossless, tunable and topologically-reconfigurable quantum metamaterials, for single- or few-photon-level applications as varied as quantum sensing, quantum information processing, and quantum simulations using metamaterials.

Ultra-short strong excitation of two-level systems

We present a model describing the use of ultra-short strong pulses to control the population of the excited level of a two-level quantum system. In particular, we study an off-resonance excitation with a few cycles pulse which presents a smooth phase jump i.e. a change of the pulse's phase which is not step-like, but happens over a finite time interval. A numerical solution is given for the time-dependent probability amplitude of the excited level. The control of the excited level's population is obtained acting on the shape of the phase transient, and other parameters of the excitation pulse.

Controlling laser spectra in a phaseonium photonic crystal using maser

We study the control of quantum resonances in photonic crystals with electromagnetically induced transparency driven by microwave field. In addition to the control laser, the intensity and phase of the maser can alter the transmission and reflection spectra in interesting ways, producing hyperfine resonances through the combined effects of multiple scattering in the superstructure.

Quantum coherence-assisted propagation of surface plasmon polaritons

We theoretically demonstrate coherent control over propagation of surface plasmon polaritons(SPP), at both telecommunication and visible wavelengths, on a metallic surface adjacent to quantum coherence (phaseonium) medium composed of three-level quantum emitters (semiconductor quantum dots, atoms, rare-earth ions, etc.) embedded in a dielectric host. The coherent drive allows us to provide sufficient gain for lossless SPP propagation and also lowers the pumping requirements. In case of lossy propagation, an order of magnitude enhancement in propagation length can be achieved. Optical control over SPP propagation dynamics via an external coherent drive holds promise for quantum control in the field of nanophotonics.

Quantum-Coherence-Enhanced Surface Plasmon Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation

We investigate surface plasmon amplification in a silver nanoparticle coupled to an externally driven three-level gain medium, and show that quantum coherence significantly enhances the generation of surface plasmons. Surface plasmon amplification by stimulated emission of radiation is achieved in the absence of population inversion on the spasing transition, which reduces the pump requirements. The coherent drive allows us to control the dynamics, and holds promise for quantum control of nanoplasmonic devices.

Using Quantum Coherence to Enhance Gain in Atomic Physics

Quantum coherence and interference effects in atomic and molecular physics has been extensively studied due to intriguing counterintuitive physics and potential important applications. Here we present one such application of using quantum coherence to generate and enhance gain in extreme ultra-violet(XUV)(@58.4nm in Helium) and infra-red(@794.76nm in Rubidium) regime of electromagnetic radiation. We show that using moderate external coherent drive, a substantial enhancement in the energy of the lasing pulse can be achieved under optimal conditions. We also discuss the role of coherence. The present paper is intended to be pedagogical on this subject of coherence-enhanced lasing.

Wake Turbulence of Two NREL 5-MW Wind Turbines Immersed in a Neutral Atmospheric Boundary-Layer Flow

The fluid dynamics video considers an array of two NREL 5-MW turbines separated by seven rotor diameters in a neutral atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). The neutral atmospheric boundary-layer flow data were obtained from a precursor ABL simulation using a Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) framework within OpenFOAM. The mean wind speed at hub height is 8m/s, and the surface roughness is 0.2m. The actuator line method (ALM) is used to model the wind turbine blades by means of body forces added to the momentum equation. The fluid dynamics video shows the root and tip vortices emanating from the blades from various viewpoints. The vortices become unstable and break down into large-scale turbulent structures. As the wakes of the wind turbines advect further downstream, smaller-scale turbulence is generated. It is apparent that vortices generated by the blades of the downstream wind turbine break down faster due to increased turbulence levels generated by the wake of the upstream wind turbine.

Coherence Enhanced Transient Lasing in XUV Regime

We report the effect of a coherent drive on transient lasing in three-level $Λ$ and $Ξ$ configurations ($c\leftrightarrow a\leftrightarrow b$). We show that the presence of a resonant coherent drive on the $a\leftrightarrow c$ optical transition can yield an order of magnitude enhancement of the output laser energy on a $a\rightarrow b$ XUV or X-ray transition than with no coherent drive. We demonstrate the crucial role of coherence $\varrho_{ac}$ for the laser power enhancement. Contrary to the forward direction (with respect to the pump), where forward gain can be enhanced for some choice of the drive Rabi frequency $Ω_{c}$, coherent drive on the $ac$ transition always suppresses the backward gain.

Microwave controlled efficient Raman and sub-Raman generation

We propose an efficient scheme for the generation and the manipulation of Raman fields in an homogeneously broadened atomic vapor in a closed three levels $Λ$-configuration. The key concept in generating the Raman and sub-Raman fields efficiently at lower optical densities involve the microwave induced atomic coherence of the lower levels. We show explicitly that, generation efficiency of the Raman fields can be controlled by manipulating the coherences via phase and amplitude of the microwave field.

Ultralow-power local laser control of the dimer density in alkali-metal vapors through photodesorption

Ultralow-power diode-laser radiation is employed to induce photodesorption of cesium from a partially transparent thin-film cesium adsorbate on a solid surface. Using resonant Raman spectroscopy, we demonstrate that this photodesorption process enables an accurate local optical control of the density of dimer molecules in alkali-metal vapors.

Effective unidirectional pumping for steady-state amplification without inversion

We discuss an opportunity to achieve amplification without inversion in three-level cascade scheme using an effective unidirectional pumping via bidirectional incoherent pump. Analytical solution to the population and the coherence are obtained in the steady-state regime. With a proper choice of the parameters, obtained here, the possibility for amplification without inversion is presented.

Experimental observation of carrier-envelope phase effects by multicycle pulses

We present an experimental and theoretical study of carrier-envelope phase (CEP) effects on the population transfer between two bound atomic states interacting with pulses consisting of many cycles. Using intense radio-frequency pulse with Rabi frequency of the order of the atomic transition frequency, we investigated the influence of CEP on the control of phase dependent multi-photon transitions between the Zeeman sub-levels of the ground state of $^{87}$Rb. Our scheme has no limitation on the duration of the pulses. Extending the CEP control to longer pulses creates interesting possibilities to generate pulses with accuracy that is better then the period of optical oscillations.

Phase dependent interference effects on atomic excitation

We present an experimental and theoretical study of phase-dependent interference effects in multi-photon excitation under bichromatic radio-frequency (rf) field. Using an intense rf pulse, we study the interference between the three-photon and one-photon transition between the Zeeman sub-levels of the ground state of $^{87}$Rb that allows us to determine the carrier-envelope phase of the fields even for long pulses.

Quantum interference controlled resonance profiles: From lasing without inversion to photo-detection

In this work we report a quantum interference mediated control of the resonance profiles in a generic three-level system and investigate its effect on key quantum interference (QI) phenomena. Namely in a three level configuration with doublets in the ground or excited states, we show control over enhancement and suppression of the emission (absorption) profiles. This is achieved by manipulation of the strength of QI and the energy spacing of the doublets. We analyze the application of such QI induced control of the resonance profile in the framework of two limiting cases of lasing without inversion and photo-detection.

Analytical solution to position dependent mass Schrödinger equation

Using a recently developed technique to solve Schrödinger equation for constant mass, we studied the regime in which mass varies with position i.e position dependent mass Schrödinger equation(PDMSE). We obtained an analytical solution for the PDMSE and applied our approach to study a position dependent mass $m(x)$ particle scattered by a potential $\mathcal{V}(x)$. We also studied the structural analogy between PDMSE and two-level atomic system interacting with a classical field.

Coherent control of atomic excitation using off-resonant strong few-cycle pulses

We study the dynamics of a two-level system driven by an off-resonant few-cycle pulse which has a phase jump $ϕ$ at $t=t_{0}$, in contrast to many cycle pulses, under non rotating-wave approximation (NRWA). We give a closed form analytical solution for the evolution of the probability amplitude $|C_{a} (t)|$ for the upper level. Using the appropriate pulse parameters like phase-jump $ϕ$, jump time $t_{0}$, pulse width $τ$, frequency $ν$ and Rabi frequency $Ω_{0}$ the population transfer, after the pulse is gone, can be optimized and for the pulse considered here, enhancement of $10^{6}-10^{8}$ factor was obtained.

Coherent Excitation of a Two-Level Atom driven by a far off-resonant Classical Field: Analytical Solutions

We present an analytical treatment of coherent excitation of a Two-Level Atom driven by a far-off resonant classical field. A class of pulse envelope is obtained for which this problem is exactly solvable. The solutions are given in terms of Heun function which is a generalization of the Hypergeometric function. The degeneracy of Heun to Hypergeometric equation can give all the exactly solvable pulse shapes of Gauss Hypergeometric form, from the generalized pulse shape obtained here. We discuss the application of the results obtained to the generation of XUV.
