Renormalization of bicritical circle maps

A general ansatz in Renormalization Theory, already established in many important situations, states that exponential convergence of renormalization orbits implies that topological conjugacies are actually smooth (when restricted to the attractors of the original systems). In this paper we establish this principle for a large class of bicritical circle maps, which are $C^3$ circle homeomorphisms with irrational rotation number and exactly two (non-flat) critical points. The proof presented here is an adaptation, to the bicritical setting, of the one given by de Faria and de Melo for the case of a single critical point. When combined with some recent papers, our main theorem implies $C^{1+α}$ rigidity for real-analytic bicritical circle maps with rotation number of bounded type.

Dirac physical measures on saddle-type fixed points

In this article we study some statistical aspects of surface diffeomorphisms. We first show that for a $C^1$ generic diffeomorphism, a Dirac invariant measure whose \emph{statistical basin of attraction} is dense in some open set and has positive Lebesgue measure, must be supported in the orbit of a sink. We then construct an example of a $C^1$-diffeomorphism having a Dirac invariant measure, supported on a hyperbolic fixed point of saddle type, whose statistical basin of attraction is a nowhere dense set with positive Lebesgue measure. Our technique can be applied also to construct a $C^1$ diffeomorphism whose set of points with historic behaviour has positive measure and is nowhere dense.

Beau bounds for multicritical circle maps

Let $f: S^1\to S^1$ be a $C^3$ homeomorphism without periodic points having a finite number of critical points of power-law type. In this paper we establish real a-priori bounds, on the geometry of orbits of $f$, which are beau in the sense of Sullivan, i.e. bounds that are asymptotically universal at small scales. The proof of the beau bounds presented here is an adaptation, to the multicritical setting, of the one given by the second author and de Melo, for the case of a single critical point.

Real bounds and Lyapunov exponents

We prove that a $C^3$ critical circle map without periodic points has zero Lyapunov exponent with respect to its unique invariant Borel probability measure. Moreover, no critical point of such a map satisfy the Collet-Eckmann condition. This result is proved directly from the well-known real a-priori bounds, without using Pesin's theory. We also show how our methods yield an analogous result for infinitely renormalizable unimodal maps of any combinatorial type. Finally we discuss an application of these facts to the study of neutral measures of certain rational maps of the Riemann sphere.
