Fully Algebraic and Self-consistent Effective Dynamics in a Static Quantum Embedding

Quantum embedding approaches involve the self-consistent optimization of a local fragment of a strongly correlated system, entangled with the wider environment. The `energy-weighted' density matrix embedding theory (EwDMET) was established recently as a way to systematically control the resolution of the fragment-environment coupling, and allow for true quantum fluctuations over this boundary to be self-consistently optimized within a fully static framework. In this work, we reformulate the algorithm to ensure that EwDMET can be considered equivalent to an optimal and rigorous truncation of the self-consistent dynamics of dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). A practical limitation of these quantum embedding approaches is often a numerical fitting of a self-consistent object defining the quantum effects. However, we show here that in this formulation, all numerical fitting steps can be entirely circumvented, via an effective Dyson equation in the space of truncated dynamics. This provides a robust and analytic self-consistency for the method, and an ability to systematically and rigorously converge to DMFT from a static, wave function perspective. We demonstrate that this improved approach can solve the correlated dynamics and phase transitions of the Bethe lattice Hubbard model in infinite dimensions, as well as one- and two-dimensional Hubbard models where we clearly show the benefits of this rapidly convergent basis for correlation-driven fluctuations. This systematically truncated description of the effective dynamics of the problem also allows access to quantities such as Fermi liquid parameters and renormalized dynamics, and demonstrates a numerically efficient, systematic convergence to the zero-temperature dynamical mean-field theory limit.

Raman Signatures of Strong Kitaev Exchange Correlations in (Na$_{1-x}$Li$_x$)$_2$IrO$_3$ : Experiments and Theory

Inelastic light scattering studies on single crystals of (Na$_{1-x}$Li$_x$)$_2$IrO$_3$ ($x = 0, 0.05$ and $0.15$) show a polarization independent broad band at $\sim $~2750 cm$^{-1}$ with a large band-width $\sim 1800$~cm$^{-1}$. For Na$_2$IrO$_3$ the broad band is seen for temperatures $ \leq 200$~K and persists inside the magnetically ordered state. For Li doped samples, the intensity of this mode increases, shifts to lower wave-numbers and persists to higher temperatures. Such a mode has recently been predicted (Knolle et.al.) as a signature of the Kitaev spin liquid. We assign the observation of the broad band to be a signature of strong Kitaev-exchange correlations. The fact that the broad band persists even inside the magnetically ordered state suggests that dynamically fluctuating moments survive even below $T_{N}$. This is further supported by our mean field calculations. The Raman response calculated in mean field theory shows that the broad band predicted for the spin liquid state survives in the magnetically ordered state near the zigzag-spin liquid phase boundary. A comparison with the theoretical model gives an estimate of the Kitaev exchange interaction parameter to be $J_K\approx 57$~meV.

Spin liquid like Raman signatures in hyperkagome iridate Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$

Combining Raman scattering measurements with mean field calculations of the Raman response we show that Kitaev-like magnetic exchange is dominant in the hyperkagome iridate Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$. In the measurements we observe a broad Raman band at $\sim$~3500 cm$^{-1}$ with a band-width $\sim 1700$~cm$^{-1}$. Calculations of the Raman response of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the hyperkagome lattice shows that the experimental observations are consistent with calculated Raman response where Kitaev exchange interaction ($J_K$) is much larger than the Heisenberg term J$_1$ ($J_1/J_K \sim 0.1$). A comparison with the theoretical model gives an estimate of the Kitaev exchange interaction parameter.

$d$-wave superconductivity in coupled ladders

We study the one-band Hubbard model on the trellis lattice, a two-dimensional frustrated lattice of coupled two-leg ladders, with hopping amplitude $t$ within ladders and $t'$ between ladders. For large $U/t$ this is a model for the cuprate Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$. We investigate the phase diagram as a function of doping for $U=10t$ using two quantum cluster methods: The variational cluster approximation (VCA), with clusters of sizes 8 and 12, and Cellular dynamical mean field theory (CDMFT), both at zero temperature. Both methods predict a superconducting dome, ending at roughly 20\% doping in VCA and 15\% in CDMFT. In VCA, the superconducting order parameter is complex in a range of doping centered around 10\%, corresponding to bulk chiral, $T$-violating superconductivity. However, the CDMFT solution is not chiral. We find evidence for a migration of the Cooper pairs from the inter-ladder region towards the plaquettes as doping is increased.

Antiferromagnetism in the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice: a Two-Particle Self-Consistent study

The semimetal to antiferromagnet quantum phase transition of the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice has come to the forefront in the context of the proposal that a semimetal to spin liquid transition can occur before the transition to the antiferromagnetic phase. To study the semimetal to antiferromagnet transition, we generalize the two-particle self-consistent (TPSC) approach to the honeycomb lattice (a structure that can be realized in graphene for example). We show that the critical interaction strength where the transition occurs is $U_c/t=3.79\pm 0.01$ quite close to the value $U_c/t=3.869 \pm 0.013$ reported using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. This reinforces the conclusion that the semimetal to spin liquid transition is pre-empted by the transition to the antiferromagnet. Since TPSC satisfies the Mermin-Wagner theorem, we find temperature-dependent results for the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic correlation lengths as well as the dependence of double occupancy and of the renormalized spin and charge interactions on the bare interaction strength. We also estimate the value of the crossover temperature to the renormalized classical regime as a function of interaction strength.

A stable Algebraic Spin Liquid in a Hubbard model

We show the existence of a stable Algebraic Spin Liquid (ASL) phase in a Hubbard model defined on a honeycomb lattice with spin-dependent hopping that breaks time-reversal symmetry. The effective spin model is the Kitaev model for large on-site repulsion. The gaplessness of the emergent Majorana fermions is protected by the time reversal (TR) invariance of this model. We prove that the effective spin model is TR invariant in the entire Mott phase thus ensuring the stability of the ASL. The model can be physically realized in cold atom systems and we propose experimental signals of the ASL.

Topological transitions in a model with Particle-Hole symmetry, Pancharatnam-Berry Curvature and Dirac Points

We study the topology and geometry of a fermionic model on the honeycomb lattice with spin-dependent hopping which breaks the time-reversal and charge-conjugation symmetries but preserves their composition. We show that in such a case the Zak phases are topological invariants that characterize the semi-metallic state at half-filling and determine the edge state structure. As the strength of the spin-dependent hopping varies, the model shows several Lifshitz transitions corresponding to creation and merging of multiple Dirac points. We discuss the possible realization of this model in cold atom systems and propose experimental signals of detecting the Dirac points and Pancharathnam-Berry curvature of the bands.
