Of Substitution and Doping: Spatial and Electronic Structure in Fe Pnictides

A highly intriguing aspect in iron-pnictide superconductors is the composition-dependent electronic structure, in particular the question if and how charge carriers are introduced to the system upon substitution of Ba by alkali metals or of Fe by other transition metals, TM. We report on a systematic study of spatial structure and electronic states by x-ray diffraction and x-ray absorption on a large number of compositions in the (Ba,K)(Fe,TM)2As2 family. The coherent combination of detailed structural information with an in-depth analysis of the electronic structure allows us to sensitively disentangle (charge-carrier) "doping" effects from "substitutional" effects. Results include a doping character that is site-decoupled, as well as TM 3d energy-level schemes that exhibit non-standard level sequences and even t2-e level crossings. Our study indicates that doping per se seems to play a lesser role than expected for pnictide superconductivity and magnetism.

Strong Correlations, Strong Coupling and s-wave Superconductivity in Hole-doped BaFe2As2 Single Crystals

We present a comprehensive study of the low-temperature heat capacity and thermal expansion of single crystals of the hole-doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 series (0<x<1) and the end-members RbFe2As2 and CsFe2As2. A large increase of the Sommerfeld coefficient is observed with both decreasing band filling and isovalent substitution (K, Rb, Cs) revealing a strong enhancement of electron correlations and the possible proximity of these materials to a Mott insulator. This trend is well reproduced theoretically by our Density-Functional Theory + Slave-Spin (DFT+SS) calculations, confirming that 122-iron pnictides are effectively Hund metals, in which sizable Hund's coupling and orbital selectivity are the key ingredients for tuning correlations. We also find direct evidence for the existence of a coherence-incoherence crossover between a low-temperature heavy Fermi liquid and a highly incoherent high-temperature regime similar to heavy fermion systems. In the superconducting state, clear signatures of multiband superconductivity are observed with no evidence for nodes in the energy gaps, ruling out the existence of a doping-induced change of symmetry (from s to d-wave). We argue that the disappearance of the electron band in the range 0.4<x<1.0 is accompanied by a strong-to-weak coupling crossover and that this shallow band remains involved in the superconducting pairing, although its contribution to the normal state fades away. Differences between hole- and electron-doped BaFe2As2 series are emphasized and discussed in terms of strong pair breaking by potential scatterers beyond the Born limit.

Complex phase diagram of Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$: a multitude of phases striving for the electronic entropy

The low-temperature electronic phase diagram of Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, obtained using high-resolution thermal-expansion and specific-heat measurements, is shown to be considerably more complex than previously reported, containing nine different phases. Besides the magnetic $C_{2}$ and reentrant $C_{4}$ phases, we find evidence for an additional, presumably magnetic, phase below the usual SDW transition, as well as a possible incommensurate magnetic phase. All these phases coexist and compete with superconductivity, which is particularily strongly suppressed by the $C_{4}$-magnetic phase due to a strong reduction of the electronic entropy available for pairing in this phase.

Nematic susceptibility of hole- and electron-doped BaFe2As2 iron-based superconductors from shear modulus measurements

The nematic susceptibility of hole-doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 and electron-doped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 iron-based superconductors is obtained from measurements of the elastic shear modulus using a three-point bending setup in a capacitance dilatometer. Nematic fluctuations, although weakened by doping, extend over the whole superconducting dome in both systems, suggesting their close tie to superconductivity. Evidence for quantum critical behavior of the nematic susceptibility is, surprisingly, only found for Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2, the system with the lower maximal Tc value.

Superconductivity-induced reentrance of orthorhombic distortion in Ba1-xKxFe2As2

Detailed knowledge of the phase diagram and the nature of the competing magnetic and superconducting phases is imperative for an understanding of the physics of iron-based superconductivity. Here, we show using thermodynamic probes that the phase diagram of the first discovered, and highest Tc, 122-type material, Ba1-xKxFe2As2 is in fact much richer than previously reported. Inside the usual stripe-type magnetic order with C2-symmetry, we find a small pocket of a tetragonal, C4-symmetric phase, which surprisingly reverts back to the C2-phase at or slightly below the superconducting transition. This re-entrance to a low-temperature orthorhombic state induced by superconductivity is discussed in terms of competition of the two magnetic phases with superconductivity and is illustrated by the measured changes in the electronic entropy of the system. Using our thermodynamic data, we make predictions about how the phase diagram of these competing orders will change under pressure.

Evidence of Strong Correlations and Coherence-Incoherence Crossover in the Iron Pnictide Superconductor KFe2As2

Using resistivity, heat-capacity, thermal-expansion, and susceptibility measurements we study the normal-state behavior of KFe2As2. We find that both the Sommerfeld coefficient gamma = 103 mJ mol-1 K-2 and the Pauli susceptibility chi = 4x10-4 are strongly enhanced, which confirm the existence of heavy quasiparticles inferred from previous de Haas-van Alphen and ARPES experiments. We discuss this large enhancement using a Gutzwiller slave-boson mean-field calculation, which reveals the proximity of KFe2As2 to an orbital-selective Mott transition. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the thermal expansion provide strong experimental evidence for the existence of a coherence-incoherence crossover, similar to what is found in heavy fermion and ruthenate compounds, due to Hund's coupling between orbitals.

Lack of coupling between superconductivity and orthorhombic distortion in stoichiometric single-crystalline FeSe

The coupling between superconductivity and othorhombic distortion is studied in vapor-grown FeSe single crystals using high-resolution thermal-expansion measurements. In contrast to the Ba122-based (Ba122) superconductors, we find that superconductivity does not reduce the orthorhombicity below Tc. Instead we find that superconductivity couples strongly to the in-plane area, which explains the large hydrostatic pressure effects. We discuss our results in light of the spinnematic scenario and argue that FeSe has many features quite different from the typical Fe-based superconductors.

Strong Pauli-limiting behavior of $H_{c2}$ and uniaxial pressure dependencies in KFe2As2

KFe2As2 single crystals are studied using specific-heat, high-resolution thermal-expansion, magnetization, and magnetostriction measurements. The magnetization and magnetostriction data provide clear evidence for strong Pauli limiting effects for magnetic fields parallel to the FeAs planes, suggesting that KFe2As2 may be a good candidate to search for the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. Using standard thermodynamic relations, the uniaxial pressure derivatives of the critical temperature ($T_{c}$), the normal-state Sommerfeld coefficient ($γ_{n}$), the normal-state susceptibility ($χ$), and the thermodynamic critical field ($H_{c}$) are calculated from our data. We find that the close relationship between doping and pressure as found in other Fe-based systems does not hold for KFe2As2.

Electronic structure of single-crystalline Mg$_x$Al$_{1-x}$B$_2$ probed by x-ray diffraction multipole refinements and polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy

X-ray diffraction multipole refinements of single-crystalline Mg$_x$Al$_{1-x}$B$_2$ and polarization-dependent near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure at the B 1$s$ edge reveal a strongly anisotropic electronic structure. Comparing the data for superconducting compounds ($x= 0.8$, 1.0) with those for the non-superconductor ($x=0$) gives direct evidence for a rearrangement of the hybridizations of the boron $p_z$ bonds and underline the importance of holes in the $σ$-bonded covalent $sp^2$ states for the superconducting properties of the diborides. The data indicate that Mg is approximately divalent in MgB$_2$ and suggest predominantly ionic bonds between the Mg ions and the two-dimensional B rings. For AlB$_2$ ($x=0$), on the other hand, about 1.5 electrons per Al atom are transferred to the B sheets while the residual 1.5 electrons remain at the Al site which suggests significant covalent bonding between the Al ions and the B sheets. This finding together with the static electron deformation density points to almost equivalent electron counts on B sheets of MgB$_2$ and AlB$_2$\@, yet with a completely different electron/hole distribution between the $σ$ and $π$ bonds.

Thermodynamic phase diagram and phase competition in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 studied by thermal expansion

High-resolution thermal-expansion and specific-heat measurements were performed on single crystalline BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 (0 < x < 0.33, x = 1). The observation of clear anomalies allows to establish the thermodynamic phase diagram which features a small coexistence region of SDW and superconductivity with a steep rise of Tc on the underdoped side. Samples that undergo the tetragonal-orthorhombic structural transition are detwinned in situ, and the response of the sample length to the magneto-structural and superconducting transitions is studied for all three crystallographic directions. It is shown that a reduction of the magnetic order by superconductivity is reflected in all lattice parameters. On the overdoped side, superconductivity affects the lattice parameters in much the same way as the SDW on the underdoped side, suggesting an intimate relation between the two types of order. Moreover, the uniaxial pressure derivatives of Tc are calculated using the Ehrenfest relation and are found to be large and anisotropic. A correspondence between substitution and uniaxial pressure is established, i.e., uniaxial pressure along the b-axis (c-axis) corresponds to a decrease (increase) of the P content. By studying the electronic contribution to the thermal expansion we find evidence for a maximum of the electronic density of states at optimal doping.

Complex magneto-elastic properties in the frustrated kagome-staircase compounds (Co$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_3$V$_2$O$_8$

High resolution heat capacity and thermal expansion experiments performed on single crystalline kagome-staircase compounds (Co$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ are presented. The parent compounds Co$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ and Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ undergo a complex sequence of first- and second-order magnetic phase transitions. The low-temperature ($T<40$ K) magnetic entropy evolves monotonously with the doping content $x$, from the full S=1 Ni$^{2+}$ magnetic entropy in Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ to half of the S=3/2 Co$^{2+}$ magnetic entropy in Co$_3$V$_2$O$_8$. Thermal expansion coefficients $α_i$ ($i = a$, $b$ and $c$) show a strong anisotropy for all (Co$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ compounds. The low-temperature magnetic distortion indicates that Co-doping (Ni-doping) has similar effects to applying a uniaxial pressures along $a$ or $b$ ($c$). Linear Grüneisen parameters $Γ_i$ are extracted for the three main axes $i$ and exhibit a complex behavior with both temperature and doping. For each axis, $Γ_i$ and $α_i$ exhibit a sign change (at low temperature) at the critical concentration $x_c\simeq0.25$, at which the incommensurate magnetic propagation vector changes. Beyond our study, an understanding of the multiple and complex parameters (magnetic frustration, magnetic anisotropy, mixture of S=1 and S=3/2 ions, etc.) is now necessarily to bring light to the rich magneto-elastic properties of (Co$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_3$V$_2$O$_8$.

Strongly Anisotropic Magnetic Phase Diagram of CeAu2Ge2

CeAu2Ge2 single crystals (tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure) have been grown in Au-Ge flux (AGF) as well as in Sn flux (SF). X-ray powder-diffraction and EDX measurements indicate that in the latter case Sn atoms from the flux are incorporated in the samples, leading to a decrease of the lattice constants by ~ 0.3% compared to AGF samples. For both types of samples, a strong anisotropy of the magnetization M for the magnetic field B parallel and perpendicular to the c direction is observed with M||/M^{\bot} ~ 6 - 7 in low fields just above 10 K. This anisotropy is preserved to high fields and temperatures and can be quantitatively explained by crystal electric field effects. Antiferromagnetic ordering sets in around 10 K as previously found for polycrystalline samples. From the magnetization data of our single crystals we obtain the phase diagrams for the AGF and SF samples. The magnetic properties depend strongly on the flux employed. While the AGF samples exhibit a complex behavior indicative of several magnetic transitions, the SF samples adopt a simpler antiferromagnetic structure with a single spin-flop transition. This effect of a more ordered state induced by disorder in form of Sn impurities is qualitatively explained within the ANNNI model, which assumes ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions in agreement with the magnetic structure previously inferred from neutron-scattering experiments on polycrystalline CeAu2Ge2 by Loidl et al. [Phys. Rev. B 46, 9341, (1992)].

Transverse and Longitudinal Magnetic-Field Responses in the Ising Ferromagnets URhGe, UCoGe and UGe2

The field dependence of the electronic specific heat gamma(H) of URhGe is determined using temperature-dependent magnetization measurements and Maxwell's relation for all three orthorhombic directions. A large (40 %) enhancement of gamma(H) is found at the reorientational transition for fields applied along the b hard axis, which we argue occurs when the field-induced moment is of the same size as the zero-field ordered moment M0. Fields applied along the easy direction, on the other hand, lead to a rapid suppression of gamma(H). We emphasize that this behavior is also applicable to the closely related ferromagnetic superconductors UCoGe and UGe2 and discuss implications for the novel field-induced/enhanced superconductivity in these materials.

Calorimetric Evidence of Multiband Superconductivity in Ba(Fe0.925Co0.075)2As2

We report on the determination of the electronic heat capacity of a slightly overdoped (x = 0.075) Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystal with a Tc of 21.4 K. Our analysis of the temperature dependence of the superconducting-state specific heat provides strong evidence for a two-band s-wave order parameter with gap amplitudes 2D1(0)/kBTc=1.9 and 2D2(0)/kBTc=4.4. Our result is consistent with the recently predicted s+- order parameter [I. I. Mazin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 057003 (2008)].
