Multiple relaxation times in perturbed XXZ chain

We numerically study the relaxation of correlation functions in weakly perturbed integrable XXZ chain. The decay of the spin-current and the energy-current correlations at zero magnetization are well described by single, but quite distinct, relaxation rates governed by the square of the perturbation strength $g$. However, at finite magnetization a single correlation function reveals multiple relaxation rates. The result can be understood in terms of multi-scale relaxation scenario, where various relaxation times are linked with various quantities which are conserved in the reference integrable system. On the other hand, the correlations of non-commuting quantities, being conserved at particular anisotropies $Δ$, decay non-exponentially with characteristic time scale linear in $g$.

Relaxation at different length-scales in models of many-body localization

We study dynamical correlation functions in the random-field Heisenberg chain, which probes the relaxation times at different length scales. Firstly, we show that the relaxation time associated with the dynamical imbalance (examining the relaxation at the smallest length scale) decreases with disorder much faster than the one determined by the dc conductivity (probing the global response of the system). We argue that the observed dependence of relaxation on the length scale originates from local nonresonant regions. The latter have particularly long relaxation times or remain frozen, allowing for nonzero dc transport via higher-order processes. Based on the numerical evidence, we introduce a toy model that suggests that the nonresonant regions asymptotic dynamics are essential for the proper understanding of the disordered chains with many-body interactions.

Dynamical spin correlations of the kagome antiferromagnet

Temperature-dependent dynamical spin correlations, which can be readily accessed via a variety of experimental techniques, hold the potential of offering a unique fingerprint of quantum spin liquids and other intriguing dynamical states. In this work we present an in-depth study of the temperature-dependent dynamical spin structure factor $S({\bf q}, ω)$ of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg spin-1/2 model on the kagome lattice with additional Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya (DM) interactions. Using the finite-temperature Lanczos method on lattices with up to $N = 30$ sites we find that even without DM interactions, chiral low-energy spin fluctuations of the $120^\circ$ AFM order parameter dominate the dynamical response. This leads to a nontrivial frequency dependence of $S({\bf q}, ω)$ and the appearance of a pronounced low-frequency mode at the M point of the extended Brillouin zone. Adding an out-of-plane DM interactions $D^z$ gives rise to an anisotropic dynamical response, a softening of in-plane spin fluctuations, and, ultimately, the onset of a coplanar AFM ground-state order at $D^z > 0.1 J$. Our results are in very good agreement with existing inelastic neutron scattering and temperature-dependent NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) data on the paradigmatic kagome AFM herbertsmithite, where the effect of its small $D^z$ on the dynamical spin correlations is shown to be rather small, as well as with $1/T_1$ data on the novel kagome AFM YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$, where its substantial $D^z \approx 0.25 J$ interaction is found to strongly affect the spin dynamics.

Many-body localization as a percolation phenomenon

We examine the standard model of many-body localization (MBL), i.e., the disordered chain of interacting spinless fermions, by representing it as the network in the many-body (MB) basis of noninteracting localized Anderson states. By studying eigenstates of the full Hamiltonian, for strong disorders we find that the dynamics is confined up to very long times to disconnected MB clusters in the Fock space. By keeping only resonant contributions and simplifying the quantum problem to rate equations (REs) for MB states, in analogy with percolation problems, the MBL transition is located via the universal cluster distribution and the emergence of the macroscopic cluster. On the ergodic side, our approximate RE approach to the relaxation processes captures well the diffusion transport, as found for the full quantum model. In a broad transient regime, we find an anomalous, i.e., subdiffusivelike, transport, emerging from weak links between MB states.

Origin of Magnetic Ordering in a Structurally-Perfect Quantum Kagome Antiferromagnet

The ground state of the simple Heisenberg nearest-neighbor quantum kagome antiferromagnetic model is a magnetically disordered spin liquid, yet various perturbations may lead to fundamentally different states. Here we disclose the origin of magnetic ordering in the structurally-perfect kagome material YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$, which is free of the widespread impurity problem. {\it Ab-initio} calculations and modeling of its magnetic susceptibility reveal that, similar to the archetypal case of herbertsmithite, the nearest-neighbor exchange is by far the dominant isotropic interaction. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) magnetic anisotropy deduced from electron spin resonance and specific-heat measurements is, however, significantly larger than in herbertsmithite. By enhancing spin correlations within kagome planes, this anisotropy is essential for magnetic ordering. Our study isolates the effect of DM anisotropy from other perturbations and unambiguously confirms the theoretical phase diagram.

Vanishing Wilson ratio as the hallmark of quantum spin-liquid models

We present numerical results for finite-temperature $T>0$ thermodynamic quantities, entropy $s(T)$, uniform susceptibility $χ_0(T)$ and the Wilson ratio $R(T)$, for several isotropic $S=1/2$ extended Heisenberg models which are prototype models for planar quantum spin liquids. We consider in this context the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ model on kagome, triangular, and square lattice, as well as the Heisenberg model on triangular lattice with the ring exchange. Our analysis reveals that typically in the spin-liquid parameter regimes the low-temperature $s(T)$ remains considerable, while $χ_0(T)$ is reduced consistent mostly with a triplet gap. This leads to vanishing $R(T \to 0)$, being the indication of macroscopic number of singlets lying below triplet excitations. This is in contrast to $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg chain, where $R(T \to 0)$ either remains finite in the gapless regime, or the singlet and triplet gap are equal in the dimerized regime.

Universal dynamics of density correlations at the transition to many-body localized state

Within one-dimensional disordered models of interacting fermions we perform a numerical study of several dynamical density correlations, which can serve as hallmarks of the transition to the many-body localized state. Results confirm that density-wave correlations exhibit quite abrupt change with the increasing disorder, with nonvanishing long-time value characteristic for nonergodic phase. In addition, our results reveal in a wide time-window a logarithmic variation of correlations in time, which we can bring in connection with the anomalous behavior of the dynamical conductivity near the transition. Our result support the view that transition to many-body localization can be characterized by universal dynamical exponents.

Antiferromagnetic order in weakly coupled random spin chains

The ordering of weakly coupled random antiferromagnetic $S=1/2$ chains, as relevant for recent experimentally investigated spin chain materials, is considered theoretically. The one-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg model with random exchange interactions is treated numerically on finite chains with the density-matrix renormalization-group approach as well as with the standard renormalization analysis, both within the mean-field approximation for interchain coupling $J_{\perp}$. Results for the ordering temperature $T_N$ and for the ordered moment $m_0$ are presented and are both reduced with the increasing disorder agreeing with experimental observations. The most pronounced effect of the random singlet concept appears to be a very large span of local ordered moments, becoming wider with decreasing $J_{\perp}$, consistent with $μ$SR experimental findings.

Effective S=1/2 description of the S=1 chain with strong easy plane anisotropy

We present a study of the one-dimensional S=1 antiferromagnetic spin chain with large easy plane anisotropy, with special emphasis on field-induced quantum phase transitions. Temperature and magnetic field dependence of magnetization, specific heat, and thermal conductivity is presented using a combination of numerical methods. In addition, the original S=1 model is mapped into the low-energy effective S=1/2 XXZ Heisenberg chain, a model which is exactly solvable using the Bethe ansatz technique. The effectiveness of the mapping is explored, and we show that all considered quantities are in qualitative, and in some cases quantitative, agreement. The thermal conductivity of the considered S=1 model is found to be strongly influenced by the underlying effective description. Furthermore, we elucidate the low-lying electron spin resonance spectrum, based on a semi--analytical Bethe ansatz calculation of the effective S=1/2 model.

Local spin relaxation within the random Heisenberg chain

Finite-temperature local spin dynamics within the random spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain is studied numerically. The aim is to explain measured NMR spin-lattice relaxation times in BaCu_{2}(Si_{0.5}Ge_{0.5})_{2}O_{7}, which is the realization of a random spin chain. In agreement with experiments we find that the distribution of relaxation times within the model shows a very large span similar to the stretched-exponential form. The distribution is strongly reduced with increasing T but stays finite also in the high-T limit. Our results reveal the crucial role of the anisotropy (interaction), since the behavior is essentially contrast with the ones for XX model (equivalent to noninteracting fermions), where we do not find any significant T dependence of the distribution.

Spin hydrodynamics in the S = 1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg chain

We study the finite-temperature dynamical spin susceptibility of the one-dimensional (generalized) anisotropic Heisenberg model within the hydrodynamic regime of small wave vectors and frequencies. Numerical results are analyzed using the memory function formalism with the central quantity being the spin-current decay rate gamma(q,omega). It is shown that in a generic nonintegrable model the decay rate is finite in the hydrodynamic limit, consistent with normal spin diffusion modes. On the other hand, in the gapless integrable model within the XY regime of anisotropy Delta < 1 the behavior is anomalous with vanishing gamma(q,omega=0) proportional to |q|, in agreement with dissipationless uniform transport. Furthermore, in the integrable system the finite-temperature q = 0 dynamical conductivity sigma(q=0,omega) reveals besides the dissipationless component a regular part with vanishing sigma_{reg}(q=0,omega to 0) to 0.

Conductivity in a disordered one-dimensional system of interacting fermions

Dynamical conductivity in a disordered one-dimensional model of interacting fermions is studied numerically at high temperatures and in the weak-interaction regime in order to find a signature of many-body localization and vanishing d.c. transport coefficients. On the contrary, we find in the regime of moderately strong local disorder that the d.c. conductivity sigma0 scales linearly with the interaction strength while being exponentially dependent on the disorder. According to the behavior of the charge stiffness evaluated at the fixed number of particles, the absence of the many-body localization seems related to an increase of the effective localization length with the interaction.
