On the possibility of excitonic magnetism in Ir double perovskites

We combine several numerical and semi-analytical methods to study the 5d5d double perovskites Sr2YIRO6 and Ba2YIRO6 which were recently proposed to exhibit excitonic magnetism. Starting from the density functional theory and constrained random phase approximation we construct effective multi-band Hubbard models. These are analyzed by means of static and dynamical mean-field theories and strong coupling expansion. We find both materials to be insulators, but, contrary to the experimental claims, with a large spin gap of several hundreds meV preventing formation of an ordered state at low temperature

Crystal field and magnetism of Pr3+^{3+} and Nd3+^{3+} ions in orthorhombic perovskites

Fifteen parameters characterizing the crystal field of rare-earth ions in the RMO3_3 perovskites (R = Pr, Nd, M = Ga, Co) are calculated by expanding the local Hamiltonian expressed in the basis of Wannier functions into a series of spherical tensor operators. The method contains a single adjustable parameter that characterizes the hybridization of R(4f4f) states with the states of oxygen ligands. Subsequently the energy levels and magnetic moments of trivalent R ion are determined by diagonalization of an effective Hamiltonian which, besides the crystal field, contains the 4f4f electron-electron repulsion, spin-orbit coupling and interaction with magnetic field. In the Ga compounds the energy levels of the ground multiplet agree within few meV with those determined experimentally by other authors. For all four compounds in question the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility is measured on polycrystalline samples and compared with the results of calculation. For NdGaO3_3 theory is also compared with the magnetic measurements on a single crystal presented by Luis {\it et al.} Phys. Rev. B {\bf 58}, 798 (1998). A good agreement between the experiment and theory is found.

Crystal field with Wannier functions: Application to rare-earth aluminates

A method to calculate the crystal field parameters {\it ab initio} is proposed and applied to trivalent rare earth impurities in yttrium aluminate and to Tb3+^{3+} ion in TbAlO3_3. To determine crystal field parameters local Hamiltonian expressed in basis of Wannier functions is expanded in a series of spherical tensor operators. Wannier functions are obtained by transforming the Bloch functions calculated using the density functional theory based program. The results show that the crystal field is continuously decreasing as the number of 4f4f electrons increases and that the hybridization of 4f4f states with the states of oxygen ligands is important. Theory is confronted with experiment for Nd3+^{3+} and Er3+^{3+} ions in YAlO3_3 and for Tb3+^{3+} ion in TbAlO3_3 and a fair agreement is found.

The ground state properties of the mixed-valence cobaltites Nd0.7_{0.7}Sr0.3_{0.3}CoO3_3, Nd0.7_{0.7}Ca0.3_{0.3}CoO3_3 and Pr0.7_{0.7}Ca0.3_{0.3}CoO3_3

The electric, magnetic, and thermal properties of three perovskite cobaltites with the same 30% hole doping and ferromagnetic ground state were investigated down to very low temperatures. With decreasing size of large cations, the ferromagnetic Curie temperature and spontaneous moments of cobalt are gradually suppressed - TC=130T_C=130 K, 55 K and 25 K and m=0.68μBm = 0.68 μ_B, 0.34 μBμ_B and 0.23 μBμ_B for Nd0.7_{0.7}Sr0.3_{0.3}CoO3_3, Pr0.7_{0.7}Ca0.3_{0.3}CoO3_3 and Nd0.7_{0.7}Ca0.3_{0.3}CoO3_3, respectively. The moment reduction with respect to moment of the conventional ferromagnet La0.7_{0.7}Sr0.3_{0.3}CoO3_3 (TC=230T_C=230 K, m=1.71μBm = 1.71 μ_B) in so-called IS/LS state for Co3+^{3+}/Co4+^{4+}, was originally interpreted using phase-separation scenario. Based on the present results, mainly the analysis of Schottky peak originating in Zeeman splitting of the ground state Kramers doublet of Nd3+^{3+}, we find, however, that ferromagnetic phase in Nd0.7_{0.7}Ca0.3_{0.3}CoO3_3 and likely also Pr0.7_{0.7}Ca0.3_{0.3}CoO3_3 is uniformly distributed over all sample volume, despite the severe drop of moments. The ground state of these compounds is identified with the LS/LS-related phase derived theoretically by Sboychakov \textit{et al.} [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{80}, 024423 (2009)]. The ground state of Nd0.7_{0.7}Sr0.3_{0.3}CoO3_3 with an intermediate cobalt moment is inhomogeneous due to competing of LS/LS and IS/LS phases. In the theoretical part of the study, the crystal field split levels for 4f34f^3 (Nd3+^{3+}), 4f24f^2 (Pr3+^{3+}) and 4f14f^1 (Ce3+^{3+} or Pr4+^{4+}) are calculated and their magnetic characteristics are presented.

The spin-state crossover and low-temperature magnetic state in yttrium doped Pr0.7_{0.7}Ca0.3_{0.3}CoO3_3

The structural and magnetic properties of two mixed-valence cobaltites with formal population of 0.30 Co4+^{4+} ions per f.u., (Pr1−y_{1-y}Yy_{y})0.7_{0.7}Ca0.3_{0.3}CoO3_3 (y=0y=0 and 0.15), have been studied down to very low temperatures by means of the high-resolution neutron diffraction, SQUID magnetometry and heat capacity measurements. The results are interpreted within the scenario of the spin-state crossover from a room-temperature mixture of the intermediate spin Co3+^{3+} and low spin Co4+^{4+} (IS/LS) at the to the LS/LS mixture in the sample ground states. In contrast to the yttrium free y=0y=0 that retains the metallic-like character and exhibits ferromagnetic ordering below 55 K, the doped system y=0.15y=0.15 undergoes a first-order metal-insulator transition at 132 K, during which not only the crossover to low spin states but also a partial electron transfer from Pr3+^{3+} 4f to cobalt 3d states take place simultaneously. Taking into account the non-magnetic character of LS Co3+^{3+}, such valence shift electronic transition causes a magnetic dilution, formally to 0.12 LS Co4+^{4+} or 0.12 t2gt_{2g} hole spins per f.u., which is the reason for an insulating, highly non-uniform magnetic ground state without long-range order. Nevertheless, even in that case there exists a relatively strong molecular field distributed over all the crystal lattice. It is argued that the spontaneous FM order in y=0y=0 and the existence of strong FM correlations in y=0.15y=0.15 apparently contradict the single t2gt_{2g} band character of LS/LS phase. The explanation we suggest relies on a model of the defect induced, itinerant hole mediated magnetism, where the defects are identified with the magnetic high-spin Co3+^{3+} species stabilized near oxygen vacancies.
