RG-stable parameter relations of a scalar field theory in absence of a symmetry

The stability of tree-level relations among the parameters of a quantum field theory with respect to renormalization group (RG) running is typically explained by the existence of a symmetry. We examine a toy model of a quantum field theory of two real scalars in which a tree-level relation among the squared-mass parameters of the scalar potential appears to be RG-stable without the presence of an appropriate underlying symmetry. The stability of this relation with respect to renormalization group running can be explained by complexifying the original scalar field theory. It is then possible to exhibit a symmetry that guarantees the relations of relevant beta functions of squared-mass parameters of the complexified theory. Among these relations, we can identify equations that are algebraically identical to the corresponding equations that guarantee the stability of the relations among the squared-mass parameters of the original real scalar field theory where the symmetry of the complexified theory is no longer present.

Preserving the validity of the Two-Higgs Doublet Model up to the Planck scale

We examine the constraints on the two Higgs doublet model (2HDM) due to the stability of the scalar potential and absence of Landau poles at energy scales below the Planck scale. We employ the most general 2HDM that incorporates an approximately Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson with a flavor aligned Yukawa sector to eliminate potential tree-level Higgs-mediated flavor changing neutral currents. Using basis independent techniques, we exhibit robust regimes of the 2HDM parameter space with a 125 GeV SM-like Higgs boson that is stable and perturbative up to the Planck scale. Implications for the heavy scalar spectrum are exhibited.

The hidden side of scalar-triplet models with spontaneous CP violation

Scalar triplet extensions of the Standard Model provide an interesting playground for the explanation of neutrino mass suppression through the type-II seesaw mechanism. Propelled by the possible connections with leptonic CP violation, we explore under which conditions spontaneous CP violation can arise in models with extra scalar triplets. The minimal model satisfying such conditions requires adding two such triplets to the SM field content. For this model, the scalar mass spectrum in both the CP-conserving and spontaneous CP-violating scenarios is studied. In the former case, a decoupling limit for the new scalars can be achieved, while this is not the case when CP is spontaneously broken. In particular, we show that the existence of two light neutral scalars with masses below a few tenths of GeVs is unavoidable in the CP-violating case. Using matrix theory theorems, we derive upper bounds for the masses of those light scalars and briefly examine whether they can still be experimentally viable. Other interesting features of the scalar mass spectrum are discussed as, e.g., the existence of relations among the charged and neutral scalar masses.

A three Higgs doublet model with symmetry-suppressed flavour changing neutral currents

We construct a three-Higgs doublet model with a flavour non-universal ${\rm U}(1)\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. That symmetry induces suppressed flavour-changing interactions mediated by neutral scalars. New scalars with masses below the TeV scale can still successfully negotiate the constraints arising from flavour data. Such a model can thus encourage direct searches for extra Higgs bosons in the future collider experiments, and includes a non-trivial flavour structure.

Radiative seesaw corrections and charged-lepton decays in a model with soft flavour violation

We consider the one-loop radiative corrections to the light-neutrino mass matrix and their consequences for the predicted branching ratios of the five lepton-flavour-violating decays $\ell_1^- \to \ell_2^- \ell_3^+ \ell_3^-$ in a two-Higgs-doublet model furnished with the type-I seesaw mechanism and soft lepton-flavour violation. We find that the radiative corrections are very significant; they may alter the predicted branching ratios by several orders of magnitude and, in particular, they may help explain why $\mbox{BR}(μ^- \to e^- e^+ e^-)$ is strongly suppressed relative to the branching ratios of the decays of the $τ^-$. We conclude that, in any serious numerical assessment of the predictions of this model, it is absolutely necessary to take into account the one-loop radiative corrections to the light-neutrino mass matrix.

Stability of neutral minima against charge breaking in the Higgs triplet model

We analyse the possibility of charge breaking minima developing in the Higgs triplet model, and under what conditions they are deeper than charge-preserving ones. Analytical expressions relating the depth of minima of different types are deduced. A global symmetry of the model leads to increased stability for charge-preserving vacua. However, if that symmetry is broken by a soft term, deeper charge-breaking minima may occur more easily. We identify the vev configurations most likely to produce charge breaking minima.

Suppression of the Higgs Dimuon Decay

It is often stated that elimination of tree-level flavor-changing neutral currents in multi-Higgs models requires that all fermions of a given charge to couple to the same Higgs boson. A counterexample was provided by Abe, Sato and Yagyu in a muon-specific two-Higgs doublet model with a softly-broken $Z_4$ symmetry. In this model, all fermions except the muon couple to one Higgs and the muon couples to the other. We study the phenomenology of the model and show that there is a wide range of parameter-space in which the branching ratios of the 125 GeV Higgs are very close to their Standard Model values, with the exception of the branching ratio into muons, which can be substantially suppressed -- this is an interesting possibility, since the current value of this branching ratio is $0.5 \pm 0.7$ times the Standard Model value. We also study the charged Higgs boson and show that, if it is lighter than $200$ GeV, it could have a large branching ratio into $μν$ - even substantially larger than the usual decay into $τν$. The decays of the heavy neutral scalars are also studied. The model does have a relationship between the branching ratios of the 125 GeV Higgs into $Z$'s, $τ$'s and $μ$'s, which can be tested in future accelerators.

Flavour symmetries in a renormalizable SO(10) model

In the context of a renormalizable supersymmetric SO(10) Grand Unified Theory, we consider the fermion mass matrices generated by the Yukawa couplings to a $\mathbf{10} \oplus \mathbf{120} \oplus \bar{\mathbf{126}}$ representation of scalars. We perform a complete investigation of the possibilities of imposing flavour symmetries in this scenario; the purpose is to reduce the number of Yukawa coupling constants in order to identify potentially predictive models. We have found that there are only 14 inequivalent cases of Yukawa coupling matrices, out of which 13 cases are generated by $Z_n$ symmetries, with suitable $n$, and one case is generated by a $Z_2 \times Z_2$ symmetry. A numerical analysis of the 14 cases reveals that only two of them---dubbed A and B in the present paper---allow good fits to the experimentally known fermion masses and mixings.

One-loop contributions to neutral minima in the inert doublet model

The vacuum structure of the inert doublet model is analysed at the one-loop level using the effective potential formalism, to verify the validity of tree-level predictions for the properties of the global minimum. An inert minimum (with massive fermions) and an inert-like minimum (with massless fermions) can coexist at tree level. But the one-loop analysis reveals that the allowed parameter space for the coexistence of more than one minimum is larger than the tree-level expected one. It is also shown that for some choices of parameters, the global minimum found at the one-loop level may be inert (or inert-like), contrary to what the tree-level analysis indicates.

Scotogenic model for co-bimaximal mixing

We present a scotogenic model, i.e. a one-loop neutrino mass model with dark right-handed neutrino gauge singlets and one inert dark scalar gauge doublet $η$, which has symmetries that lead to co-bimaximal mixing, i.e. to an atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23} = 45^\circ$ and to a $CP$-violating phase $δ= \pm π/2$, while the mixing angle $θ_{13}$ remains arbitrary. The symmetries consist of softly broken lepton numbers $L_α$ ($α= e,μ,τ$), a non-standard $CP$ symmetry, and three $Z_2$ symmetries. We indicate two possibilities for extending the model to the quark sector. Since the model has, besides $η$, three scalar gauge doublets, we perform a thorough discussion of its scalar sector. We demonstrate that it can accommodate a Standard Model-like scalar with mass $125\, \mathrm{GeV}$, with all the other charged and neutral scalars having much higher masses.

The vacuum structure of the Higgs complex singlet-doublet model

The complex singlet-doublet model is a popular theory to account for dark matter and electroweak baryogenesis, wherein the Standard Model particle content is supplemented by a complex scalar gauge singlet, with certain discrete symmetries imposed. The scalar potential which results thereof can have seven different types of minima at tree-level, which may coexist for specific choices of parameters. There is therefore the possibility that a given minimum is not global but rather a local one, and may tunnel to a deeper extremum, thus causing vacuum instability. This rich vacuum structure is explained and discussed in detail.

Are There Hidden Scalars in LHC Higgs Results?

The Higgs boson recently discovered at the Large Hadron Collider has shown to have couplings to the remaining particles well within what is predicted by the Standard Model. The search for other new heavy scalar states has so far revealed to be fruitless, imposing constraints on the existence of new scalar particles. However, it is still possible that any existing heavy scalars would preferentially decay to final states involving the light Higgs boson thus evading the current LHC bounds on heavy scalar states. Moreover, decays of the heavy scalars could increase the number of light Higgs bosons being produced. Since the number of light Higgs bosons decaying to Standard Model particles is within the predicted range, this could mean that part of the light Higgs bosons could have their origin in heavy scalar decays. This situation would occur if the light Higgs couplings to Standard Model particles were reduced by a concomitant amount. Using a very simple extension of the SM - the two-Higgs double model - we show that in fact we could already be observing the effect of the heavy scalar states even if all results related to the Higgs are in excellent agreement with the Standard Model predictions.

New textures for the lepton mass matrices

We study predictive textures for the lepton mass matrices in which the charged-lepton mass matrix has either four or five zero matrix elements while the neutrino Majorana mass matrix has, respectively, either four or three zero matrix elements. We find that all the viable textures of these two kinds share many predictions: the neutrino mass spectrum is inverted, the sum of the light-neutrino masses is close to 0.1 eV, the Dirac phase $δ$ in the lepton mixing matrix is close to either $0$ or $π$, and the mass term responsible for neutrinoless double-beta decay lies in between 12 and 22 meV.

Probing wrong-sign Yukawa couplings at the LHC and a future linear collider

We consider the two-Higgs-doublet model as a framework in which to evaluate the viability of scenarios in which the sign of the coupling of the observed Higgs boson to down-type fermions (in particular, $b$-quark pairs) is opposite to that of the Standard Model (SM), while at the same time all other tree-level couplings are close to the SM values. We show that, whereas such a scenario is consistent with current LHC observations, both future running at the LHC and a future $e^+ e^-$ linear collider could determine the sign of the Higgs coupling to $b$-quark pairs. Discrimination is possible for two reasons. First, the interference between the $b$-quark and the $t$-quark loop contributions to the $ggh$ coupling changes sign. Second, the charged-Higgs loop contribution to the $γγh$ coupling is large and fairly constant up to the largest charged-Higgs mass allowed by tree-level unitarity bounds when the $b$-quark Yukawa coupling has the opposite sign from that of the SM (the change in sign of the interference terms between the $b$-quark loop and the $W$ and $t$ loops having negligible impact).

Wrong sign and symmetric limits and non-decoupling in 2HDMs

We analyse the possibility that, in two Higgs doublet models, one or more of the Higgs couplings to fermions or to gauge bosons change sign, relative to the respective Higgs Standard Model couplings. Possible sign changes in the coupling of a neutral scalar to charged ones are also discussed. These \textit{wrong signs} can have important physical consequences, manifesting themselves in Higgs production via gluon fusion or Higgs decay into two gluons or into two photons. We consider all possible wrong sign scenarios, and also the \textit{symmetric limit}, in all possible Yukawa implementations of the two Higgs doublet model, in two different possibilities: the observed Higgs boson is the lightest CP-even scalar, or the heaviest one. We also analyse thoroughly the impact of the currently available LHC data on such scenarios. With all 8 TeV data analysed, all wrong sign scenarios are allowed in all Yukawa types, even at the 1$σ$ level. However, we will show that B-physics constraints are crucial in excluding the possibility of wrong sign scenarios in the case where $\tan β$ is below 1. We will also discuss the future prospects for probing the wrong sign scenarios at the next LHC run. Finally we will present a scenario where the alignment limit could be excluded due to non-decoupling in the case where the heavy CP-even Higgs is the one discovered at the LHC.

2HDM confronting LHC data

Almost all data collected at the LHC during the 7 and 8 TeV runs has now been analysed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. Its consistency with the Standard Model (SM) predictions has cornered the CP-conserving two-Higgs doublet model (2HDM) into the SM limit, sin (β-α) = 1. However, there are still allowed regions of the 2HDM parameter space away from this limit. In this work we discuss how the 2HDM is performing in view of the LHC data together with the remaining available experimental and theoretical constraints.

A new A4 model for lepton mixing

We present a new model of the lepton sector that uses a family symmetry A4 to make predictions for lepton mixing which are invariant under any permutation of the three flavours. We show that those predictions broadly agree with the experimental data, leading to a largish sin^2(theta12) >~ 0.34, to |cos(delta)| >~ 0.7, and to | 0.5 - sin^2(theta23) | >~ 0.08; cos(delta) and 0.5 - sin^2(theta23) are predicted to have identical signs.

Avoiding Death by Vacuum

The two-Higgs doublet model (2HDM) can have two electroweak breaking, CP-conserving, minima. The possibility arises that the minimum which corresponds to the known elementary particle spectrum is metastable, a possibility we call the "panic vacuum". We present analytical bounds on the parameters of the softly broken Peccei-Quinn 2HDM which are necessary and sufficient conditions to avoid this possibility. We also show that, for this particular model, the current LHC data already tell us that we are necessarily in the global minimum of the theory, regardless of any cosmological considerations about the lifetime of the false vacua.

preprint2013arXiv

Evading death by vacuum

In the Standard Model, the Higgs potential allows only one minimum at tree-level. But the open possibility that there might be two scalar doublets enriches the vacuum structure, allowing for the risk that we might now be in a metastable state, which we dub the panic vacuum. Current experiments at the LHC are probing the Higgs particle predicted as a result of the spontaneous symmetry breaking. Remarkably, in the two Higgs model with a softly broken U(1) symmetry, the LHC experiments already preclude panic vacuum solutions.

Five models for lepton mixing

We produce five flavour models for the lepton sector. All five models fit perfectly well---at the one-sigma level---the existing data on the neutrino mass-squared differences and on the lepton mixing angles. The models are based on the type-I seesaw mechanism, on a Z_2 symmetry for each lepton flavour, and either on a (spontaneously broken) symmetry under the interchange of two lepton flavours or on a (spontaneously broken) CP symmetry incorporating that interchange---or on both symmetries simultaneously. Each model makes definite predictions both for the scale of the neutrino masses and for the phase delta in lepton mixing; the fifth model also predicts a correlation between the lepton mixing angles theta_12 and theta_23.

Mass-degenerate Higgs bosons at 125 GeV in the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

The analysis of the Higgs boson data by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations appears to exhibit an excess of h --> gammaγevents above the Standard Model (SM) expectations; whereas no significant excess is observed in h --> ZZ* --> {four lepton} events, albeit with large statistical uncertainty due to the small data sample. These results (assuming they persist with further data) could be explained by a pair of nearly mass-degenerate scalars, one of which is a SM-like Higgs boson and the other is a scalar with suppressed couplings to W+W- and ZZ. In the two Higgs doublet model, the observed γγand ZZ* --> {four lepton} data can be reproduced by an approximately degenerate CP-even (h) and CP-odd (A) Higgs boson for values of \sin(β-α) near unity and 0.7 < \tanβ< 1. An enhanced γγsignal can also arise in cases where m_h ~ m_H, m_H ~ m_A, or m_h ~ m_H ~ m_A. Since the ZZ* --> {four lepton} signal derives primarily from a SM-like Higgs boson whereas the γγsignal receives contributions from two (or more) nearly mass-degenerate states, one would expect a slightly different invariant mass peak in the ZZ* --> {four lepton} and γγchannels. The phenomenological consequences of such models can be tested with additional Higgs data that will be collected at the LHC in the near future.

Metastability bounds on the two Higgs doublet model

In the two Higgs doublet model, there is the possibility that the vacuum where the universe resides in is metastable. We present the tree-level bounds on the scalar potential parameters which have to be obeyed to prevent that situation. Analytical expressions for those bounds are shown for the most used potential, that with a softly broken $Z_2$ symmetry. The impact of those bounds on the model's phenomenology is discussed in detail, as well as the importance of the current Large Hadron Collider results in determining whether the vacuum we live in is or is not stable. We demonstrate how the vacuum stability bounds can be obtained for the most generic CP-conserving potential, and provide a simple method to implement them.

Tree-level metastability bounds in two-Higgs doublet models

The two Higgs doublet model has a rich vacuum structure, including the possibility of existence of two Standard Model-like minima at tree-level. It is therefore possible that the universe's vacuum is metastable, and a deeper minimum exists. We present the analytical conditions one must demand of the potential's parameters to prevent that possibility, and analyse what the current LHC data tells us about the eventual existence of that second minimum.

Maximal CP violation in lepton mixing from a model with Delta(27) flavour symmetry

We propose a simple mechanism which enforces |U_{mu j}| = | U_{tau j}| forall j = 1,2,3 in the lepton mixing matrix U. This implies maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing and a maximal CP-violating phase but does not constrain the reactor mixing angle theta_{13}. We implement the proposed mechanism in two renormalizable seesaw models which have features strongly resembling those of models based on a flavour symmetry group Delta(27). Among the predictions of the models, there is a determination, although ambiguous, of the absolute neutrino mass scale, and a stringent correlation between the absolute neutrino mass scale and the effective Majorana mass in neutrinoless double-beta decay.

Probing the scalar-pseudoscalar mixing in the 125 GeV Higgs particle with current data

LHC has found hints for a Higgs particle of 125 GeV. We investigate the possibility that such a particle is a mixture of scalar and pseudoscalar states. For definiteness, we concentrate on a two Higgs doublet model with explicit CP violation and soft Z2 violation. Including all Higgs production mechanisms, we determine the current constraints obtained by comparing h -> gamma gamma with h -> V V*, and comment on the information which can be gained by measurements of h -> b \bar{b}. We find bounds |s_2| < 0.83 at one sigma, where |s_2|=0 (|s_2|=1) corresponds to a pure scalar (pure pseudoscalar) state.

Seesaw neutrino masses from an $A_4$ model with two equal vacuum expectation values

We present a model for the lepton sector, with $A_4$ horizontal-symmetry group, in which two of the Higgs doublets in an $A_4$ triplet of Higgs doublets have equal vacuum expectation values. The model makes well-defined predictions for the effective light-neutrino Majorana mass matrix. We show that those predictions are compatible with the experimental data.

preprint2012arXiv

Texture-zero model for the lepton mass matrices

We suggest a simple model, based on the type-I seesaw mechanism, for the lepton mass matrices. The model hinges on an Abelian symmetry which leads to mass matrices with some vanishing matrix elements. The model predicts one massless neutrino and $M_{eμ} = 0$ ($M$ is the effective light-neutrino Majorana mass matrix). We show that these predictions perfectly agree with the present experimental data if the neutrino mass spectrum is inverted, i.e. if $m_3 = 0$, provided the Dirac phase $δ$ is very close to maximal ($\pm π/ 2$). In the case of a normal neutrino mass spectrum, i.e. when $m_1 = 0$, the agreement of our model with the data is less than optimal---the reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ is too small in our model. Minimal leptogenesis is not an option in our model due to the vanishing elements in the Yukawa-coupling matrices.

A soft origin for CKM-type CP violation

We present a two-Higgs-doublet model, with a $\mathbbm{Z}_3$ symmetry, in which CP violation originates solely in a soft (dimension-2) coupling in the scalar potential, and reveals itself solely in the CKM (quark mixing) matrix. In particular, in the mass basis the Yukawa interactions of the neutral scalars are all real. The model has only eleven parameters to fit the six quark masses and the four independent CKM-matrix observables. We find regions of parameter space in which the flavour-changing neutral couplings are so suppressed that they allow the scalars to be no heavier than a few hundred GeV.

Could the LHC two-photon signal correspond to the heavier scalar in two-Higgs-doublet models?

LHC has reported tantalizing hints for a Higgs boson of mass 125 GeV decaying into two photons. We focus on two-Higgs-doublet Models, and study the interesting possibility that the heavier scalar (H) has been seen, with the lightest scalar (h) having thus far escaped detection. Non-observation of h at LEP severely constrains the parameter-space of two-Higgs-doublet models. We analyze cases where the decay H --> h h is kinematically allowed, and cases where it is not, in the context of type I, type II, lepton-specific, and flipped models.

Implications of the LHC two-photon signal for two-Higgs-doublet models

We study the implications for Two Higgs Doublet Models of the recent announcement at the LHC giving a tantalizing hint for a Higgs boson of mass 125 GeV decaying into two photons. We require that the experimental result be within a factor of two of the theoretical Standard Model prediction, and analyze the type I and type II models as well as the lepton-specific and flipped models, subject to this requirement. It is assumed that there is no new physics other than two Higgs doublets. In all of the models, we display the allowed region of parameter space taking the recent LHC announcement at face value, and we analyze the $W^+W^-$, $ZZ$, $\bar{b}b$ and $τ^+τ^-$ expectations in these allowed regions. Throughout the entire range of parameter space allowed by the $γγ$ constraint, the number of events for Higgs decays into $WW$, $ZZ$ and $b \bar b$ are not changed from the Standard Model by more than a factor of two. In contrast, in the Lepton Specific model, decays to $τ^+ τ^- $ are very sensitive across the entire $γγ$-allowed region.

Theory and phenomenology of two-Higgs-doublet models

We discuss theoretical and phenomenological aspects of two-Higgs-doublet extensions of the Standard Model. In general, these extensions have scalar mediated flavour changing neutral currents which are strongly constrained by experiment. Various strategies are discussed to control these flavour changing scalar currents and their phenomenological consequences are analysed. In particular, scenarios with natural flavour conservation are investigated, including the so-called type I and type II models as well as lepton-specific and inert models. Type III models are then discussed, where scalar flavour changing neutral currents are present at tree level, but are suppressed by either specific ansatze for the Yukawa couplings or by the introduction of family symmetries. We also consider the phenomenology of charged scalars in these models. Next we turn to the role of symmetries in the scalar sector. We discuss the six symmetry-constrained scalar potentials and their extension into the fermion sector. The vacuum structure of the scalar potential is analysed, including a study of the vacuum stability conditions on the potential and its renormalization-group improvement. The stability of the tree level minimum of the scalar potential in connection with electric charge conservation and its behaviour under CP is analysed. The question of CP violation is addressed in detail, including the cases of explicit CP violation and spontaneous CP violation. We present a detailed study of weak basis invariants which are odd under CP. A careful study of spontaneous CP violation is presented, including an analysis of the conditions which have to be satisfied in order for a vacuum to violate CP. We present minimal models of CP violation where the vacuum phase is sufficient to generate a complex CKM matrix, which is at present a requirement for any realistic model of spontaneous CP violation.

Abelian symmetries in the two-Higgs-doublet model with fermions

We classify all possible implementations of an abelian symmetry in the two-Higgs-doublet model with fermions. We identify those symmetries which are consistent with non-vanishing quark masses and a CKM matrix which is not block-diagonal. Our analysis takes us from a plethora of possibilities down to 246 relevant cases, requiring only 34 distinct matrix forms. We show that applying Z_n with n \geq 4 to the scalar sector leads to a continuous U(1) symmetry in the whole Lagrangian. Finally, we address the possibilities of spontaneous CP violation and of natural suppression of the flavour changing neutral currents. We explain why our work is relevant even for non-abelian symmetries.

Basis invariant conditions for supersymmetry in the two-Higgs-doublet model

The minimal supersymmetric standard model involves a rather restrictive Higgs potential with two Higgs fields. Recently, the full set of classes of symmetries allowed in the most general two Higgs doublet model was identified; these classes do not include the supersymmetric limit as a particular class. Thus, a physically meaningful definition of the supersymmetric limit must involve the interaction of the Higgs sector with other sectors of the theory. Here we show how one can construct basis invariant probes of supersymmetry involving both the Higgs sector and the gaugino-higgsino Higgs interactions.

CP properties of symmetry-constrained two-Higgs-doublet models

The two-Higgs-doublet model can be constrained by imposing Higgs-family symmetries and/or generalized CP symmetries. It is known that there are only six independent classes of such symmetry-constrained models. We study the CP properties of all cases in the bilinear formalism. An exact symmetry implies CP conservation. We show that soft breaking of the symmetry can lead to spontaneous CP violation (CPV) in three of the classes.

Generalized CP Invariance and the Yukawa sector of Two-Higgs Models

We analyze generalized CP symmetries of two-Higgs doublet models, extending them from the scalar to the fermion sector of the theory. We show that, with a single exception, those symmetries imply massless fermions. The single model which accommodates a fermionic mass spectrum compatible with experimental data possesses a remarkable feature. It displays a new type of spontaneous CP violation, which occurs not in the scalar sector responsible for the symmetry breaking mechanism but, rather, in the fermion sector.

Geometric picture of generalized-CP and Higgs-family transformations in the two-Higgs-doublet model

In the two-Higgs-doublet model (THDM), generalized-CP transformations (phi_i--> X_{ij} phi_j^* where X is unitary) and unitary Higgs-family transformations (phi_i--> U_{ij} phi_j) have recently been examined in a series of papers. In terms of gauge-invariant bilinear functions of the Higgs fields phi_i, the Higgs-family transformations and the generalized-CP transformations possess a simple geometric description. Namely, these transformations correspond in the space of scalar-field bilinears to proper and improper rotations, respectively. In this formalism, recent results relating generalized CP transformations with Higgs-family transformations have a clear geometric interpretation.

Renormalization-group constraints on Yukawa alignment in multi-Higgs-doublet models

We write down the renormalization-group equations for the Yukawa-coupling matrices in a general multi-Higgs-doublet model. We then assume that the matrices of the Yukawa couplings of the various Higgs doublets to right-handed fermions of fixed quantum numbers are all proportional to each other. We demonstrate that, in the case of the two-Higgs-doublet model, this proportionality is preserved by the renormalization-group running only in the cases of the standard type-I, II, X, and Y models. We furthermore show that a similar result holds even when there are more than two Higgs doublets: the Yukawa-coupling matrices to fermions of a given electric charge remain proportional under the renormalization-group running if and only if there is a basis for the Higgs doublets in which all the fermions of a given electric charge couple to only one Higgs doublet.

Discrete and continuous symmetries in multi-Higgs-doublet models

We consider the Higgs sector of multi-Higgs-doublet models in the presence of simple symmetries relating the various fields. We construct basis invariant observables which may in principle be used to detect these symmetries for any number of doublets. A categorization of the symmetries into classes is required, which we perform in detail for the case of two and three Higgs doublets.
