Radiative seesaw corrections and charged-lepton decays in a model with soft flavour violation

We consider the one-loop radiative corrections to the light-neutrino mass matrix and their consequences for the predicted branching ratios of the five lepton-flavour-violating decays $\ell_1^- \to \ell_2^- \ell_3^+ \ell_3^-$ in a two-Higgs-doublet model furnished with the type-I seesaw mechanism and soft lepton-flavour violation. We find that the radiative corrections are very significant; they may alter the predicted branching ratios by several orders of magnitude and, in particular, they may help explain why $\mbox{BR}(μ^- \to e^- e^+ e^-)$ is strongly suppressed relative to the branching ratios of the decays of the $τ^-$. We conclude that, in any serious numerical assessment of the predictions of this model, it is absolutely necessary to take into account the one-loop radiative corrections to the light-neutrino mass matrix.

Flavour symmetries in a renormalizable SO(10) model

In the context of a renormalizable supersymmetric SO(10) Grand Unified Theory, we consider the fermion mass matrices generated by the Yukawa couplings to a $\mathbf{10} \oplus \mathbf{120} \oplus \bar{\mathbf{126}}$ representation of scalars. We perform a complete investigation of the possibilities of imposing flavour symmetries in this scenario; the purpose is to reduce the number of Yukawa coupling constants in order to identify potentially predictive models. We have found that there are only 14 inequivalent cases of Yukawa coupling matrices, out of which 13 cases are generated by $Z_n$ symmetries, with suitable $n$, and one case is generated by a $Z_2 \times Z_2$ symmetry. A numerical analysis of the 14 cases reveals that only two of them---dubbed A and B in the present paper---allow good fits to the experimentally known fermion masses and mixings.

Scotogenic model for co-bimaximal mixing

We present a scotogenic model, i.e. a one-loop neutrino mass model with dark right-handed neutrino gauge singlets and one inert dark scalar gauge doublet $η$, which has symmetries that lead to co-bimaximal mixing, i.e. to an atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23} = 45^\circ$ and to a $CP$-violating phase $δ= \pm π/2$, while the mixing angle $θ_{13}$ remains arbitrary. The symmetries consist of softly broken lepton numbers $L_α$ ($α= e,μ,τ$), a non-standard $CP$ symmetry, and three $Z_2$ symmetries. We indicate two possibilities for extending the model to the quark sector. Since the model has, besides $η$, three scalar gauge doublets, we perform a thorough discussion of its scalar sector. We demonstrate that it can accommodate a Standard Model-like scalar with mass $125\, \mathrm{GeV}$, with all the other charged and neutral scalars having much higher masses.

New texture-zero models for lepton mixing

I systematically consider, in the context of the type-I see-saw mechanism, all the predictive cases in which both the Dirac mass matrix connecting the left-handed neutrinos to the right-handed neutrinos, and the Majorana mass matrix of the latter neutrinos, feature texture zeros, while the mass matrix of the charged leptons is diagonal. I have found a few cases which had not been discussed in the literature previously.

SO(10) models with flavour symmetries: Classification and examples

We establish the full list of flavour symmetry groups which may be enforced, without producing any further accidental symmetry, on the Yukawa-coupling matrices of an SO(10) Grand Unified Theory with arbitrary numbers of scalar multiplets in the 10, $\overline{126}$, and 120 representations of SO(10). For each of the possible discrete non-Abelian symmetry groups, we present examples of minimal models which do not run into obvious contradiction with the phenomenological fermion masses and mixings.

Double seesaw mechanism and lepton mixing

We present a general framework for models in which the lepton mixing matrix is the product of the maximal mixing matrix U_ω times a matrix constrained by a well-defined Z_2 symmetry. Our framework relies on neither supersymmetry nor non-renormalizable Lagrangians nor higher dimensions; it relies instead on the double seesaw mechanism and on the soft breaking of symmetries. The framework may be used to construct models for virtually all the lepton mixing matrices of the type mentioned above which have been proposed in the literature.

Golden ratio lepton mixing and nonzero reactor angle with $A_5$

We furnish a supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with a flavour discrete symmetry $A_5$ under which the lepton fields transform as an irreducible triplet. Additional (`flavon') superfields are used to break $A_5$ into a $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ subgroup in the charged-lepton sector and another $\mathbb{Z}_2$ subgroup in the neutrino sector. The first column of the resulting lepton mixing matrix is predicted and has entries which are related to the golden ratio. Using the observed $θ_{13}$ as input, our model predicts a solar mixing angle $θ_{12}$ in very good agreement with experiment; it also predicts a correlation between the atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$ and the $CP$-violating Dirac phase $δ$.

New textures for the lepton mass matrices

We study predictive textures for the lepton mass matrices in which the charged-lepton mass matrix has either four or five zero matrix elements while the neutrino Majorana mass matrix has, respectively, either four or three zero matrix elements. We find that all the viable textures of these two kinds share many predictions: the neutrino mass spectrum is inverted, the sum of the light-neutrino masses is close to 0.1 eV, the Dirac phase $δ$ in the lepton mixing matrix is close to either $0$ or $π$, and the mass term responsible for neutrinoless double-beta decay lies in between 12 and 22 meV.

A new A4 model for lepton mixing

We present a new model of the lepton sector that uses a family symmetry A4 to make predictions for lepton mixing which are invariant under any permutation of the three flavours. We show that those predictions broadly agree with the experimental data, leading to a largish sin^2(theta12) >~ 0.34, to |cos(delta)| >~ 0.7, and to | 0.5 - sin^2(theta23) | >~ 0.08; cos(delta) and 0.5 - sin^2(theta23) are predicted to have identical signs.

Five models for lepton mixing

We produce five flavour models for the lepton sector. All five models fit perfectly well---at the one-sigma level---the existing data on the neutrino mass-squared differences and on the lepton mixing angles. The models are based on the type-I seesaw mechanism, on a Z_2 symmetry for each lepton flavour, and either on a (spontaneously broken) symmetry under the interchange of two lepton flavours or on a (spontaneously broken) CP symmetry incorporating that interchange---or on both symmetries simultaneously. Each model makes definite predictions both for the scale of the neutrino masses and for the phase delta in lepton mixing; the fifth model also predicts a correlation between the lepton mixing angles theta_12 and theta_23.

Geometrical CP violation in the N-Higgs-doublet model

Geometrical CP violation is a particular type of spontaneous CP violation in which the vacuum expectation values have phases which are calculable, i.e. stable against the variation of the free parameters of the scalar potential. Although originally suggested within a specific version of the three-Higgs-doublet model, it is a generic phenomenon. We investigate its viability and characteristic features in models with several Higgs doublets. Our work contains both general results and illustrative examples.

Maximal CP violation in lepton mixing from a model with Delta(27) flavour symmetry

We propose a simple mechanism which enforces |U_{mu j}| = | U_{tau j}| forall j = 1,2,3 in the lepton mixing matrix U. This implies maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing and a maximal CP-violating phase but does not constrain the reactor mixing angle theta_{13}. We implement the proposed mechanism in two renormalizable seesaw models which have features strongly resembling those of models based on a flavour symmetry group Delta(27). Among the predictions of the models, there is a determination, although ambiguous, of the absolute neutrino mass scale, and a stringent correlation between the absolute neutrino mass scale and the effective Majorana mass in neutrinoless double-beta decay.

mu-tau Interchange symmetry and lepton mixing

We focus on the use of a mu-tau interchange symmetry to explain features of lepton mixing, especially maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing. We review two models which achieve this goal and are based on the seesaw mechanism and on the soft breaking of the family-lepton-number symmetries. We also note that that symmetry may be embedded in a generalized CP symmetry. We show that, in the context of some of our models, arguments of naturalness may be used for explaining the smallness of the mass ratio m_mu / m_tau.

Seesaw neutrino masses from an $A_4$ model with two equal vacuum expectation values

We present a model for the lepton sector, with $A_4$ horizontal-symmetry group, in which two of the Higgs doublets in an $A_4$ triplet of Higgs doublets have equal vacuum expectation values. The model makes well-defined predictions for the effective light-neutrino Majorana mass matrix. We show that those predictions are compatible with the experimental data.

preprint2012arXiv

Texture-zero model for the lepton mass matrices

We suggest a simple model, based on the type-I seesaw mechanism, for the lepton mass matrices. The model hinges on an Abelian symmetry which leads to mass matrices with some vanishing matrix elements. The model predicts one massless neutrino and $M_{eμ} = 0$ ($M$ is the effective light-neutrino Majorana mass matrix). We show that these predictions perfectly agree with the present experimental data if the neutrino mass spectrum is inverted, i.e. if $m_3 = 0$, provided the Dirac phase $δ$ is very close to maximal ($\pm π/ 2$). In the case of a normal neutrino mass spectrum, i.e. when $m_1 = 0$, the agreement of our model with the data is less than optimal---the reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ is too small in our model. Minimal leptogenesis is not an option in our model due to the vanishing elements in the Yukawa-coupling matrices.

A soft origin for CKM-type CP violation

We present a two-Higgs-doublet model, with a $\mathbbm{Z}_3$ symmetry, in which CP violation originates solely in a soft (dimension-2) coupling in the scalar potential, and reveals itself solely in the CKM (quark mixing) matrix. In particular, in the mass basis the Yukawa interactions of the neutral scalars are all real. The model has only eleven parameters to fit the six quark masses and the four independent CKM-matrix observables. We find regions of parameter space in which the flavour-changing neutral couplings are so suppressed that they allow the scalars to be no heavier than a few hundred GeV.

On a possible relationship between lepton mixing and the stability of dark matter

I comment on the proposal that the stability of dark matter may be due to an unbroken Z_2 symmetry contained in the partially broken lepton flavour symmetry group. I remark that (1) there is no Z_2 symmetry apparent in the lepton mass spectrum and in lepton mixing, (2) predictive models of this type may be constructed by using a lepton flavour symmetry group with three inequivalent singlets, to which the three left-handed-lepton gauge-SU(2) doublets are assigned, and (3) some predictions for the lepton masses and mixings are likely to be altered by radiative contributions to the neutrino mass matrix. I construct two models of this type in which the conserved Z_2 originates in a lepton flavour symmetry group D_4.

Theory and phenomenology of two-Higgs-doublet models

We discuss theoretical and phenomenological aspects of two-Higgs-doublet extensions of the Standard Model. In general, these extensions have scalar mediated flavour changing neutral currents which are strongly constrained by experiment. Various strategies are discussed to control these flavour changing scalar currents and their phenomenological consequences are analysed. In particular, scenarios with natural flavour conservation are investigated, including the so-called type I and type II models as well as lepton-specific and inert models. Type III models are then discussed, where scalar flavour changing neutral currents are present at tree level, but are suppressed by either specific ansatze for the Yukawa couplings or by the introduction of family symmetries. We also consider the phenomenology of charged scalars in these models. Next we turn to the role of symmetries in the scalar sector. We discuss the six symmetry-constrained scalar potentials and their extension into the fermion sector. The vacuum structure of the scalar potential is analysed, including a study of the vacuum stability conditions on the potential and its renormalization-group improvement. The stability of the tree level minimum of the scalar potential in connection with electric charge conservation and its behaviour under CP is analysed. The question of CP violation is addressed in detail, including the cases of explicit CP violation and spontaneous CP violation. We present a detailed study of weak basis invariants which are odd under CP. A careful study of spontaneous CP violation is presented, including an analysis of the conditions which have to be satisfied in order for a vacuum to violate CP. We present minimal models of CP violation where the vacuum phase is sufficient to generate a complex CKM matrix, which is at present a requirement for any realistic model of spontaneous CP violation.

Renormalization-group constraints on Yukawa alignment in multi-Higgs-doublet models

We write down the renormalization-group equations for the Yukawa-coupling matrices in a general multi-Higgs-doublet model. We then assume that the matrices of the Yukawa couplings of the various Higgs doublets to right-handed fermions of fixed quantum numbers are all proportional to each other. We demonstrate that, in the case of the two-Higgs-doublet model, this proportionality is preserved by the renormalization-group running only in the cases of the standard type-I, II, X, and Y models. We furthermore show that a similar result holds even when there are more than two Higgs doublets: the Yukawa-coupling matrices to fermions of a given electric charge remain proportional under the renormalization-group running if and only if there is a basis for the Higgs doublets in which all the fermions of a given electric charge couple to only one Higgs doublet.

TeV-scale seesaw mechanism catalyzed by the electron mass

We construct a model in which the neutrino Dirac mass terms are of order the electron mass and the seesaw mechanism proceeds via right-handed neutrinos with masses of order TeV. In our model the spectra of the three light and of the three heavy neutrinos are closely related. Since the mixing between light and heavy neutrinos is small, the model predicts no effects in pp and p \bar p colliders. Possible signatures of the model are the lepton-number-violating process e- e- --> H- H-, where H- is a charged scalar particle, lepton-flavour-violating decays like mu- --> e- e+ e-, or a sizable contribution to the anomalous magnetic dipole moment of the muon.

The Hunt for New Physics at the Large Hadron Collider

The Large Hadron Collider presents an unprecedented opportunity to probe the realm of new physics in the TeV region and shed light on some of the core unresolved issues of particle physics. These include the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking, the origin of mass, the possible constituent of cold dark matter, new sources of CP violation needed to explain the baryon excess in the universe, the possible existence of extra gauge groups and extra matter, and importantly the path Nature chooses to resolve the hierarchy problem - is it supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Many models of new physics beyond the standard model contain a hidden sector which can be probed at the LHC. Additionally, the LHC will be a top factory and accurate measurements of the properties of the top and its rare decays will provide a window to new physics. Further, the LHC could shed light on the origin of neutralino masses if the new physics associated with their generation lies in the TeV region. Finally, the LHC is also a laboratory to test the hypothesis of TeV scale strings and D-brane models. An overview of these possibilities is presented in the spirit that it will serve as a companion to the Technical Design Reports (TDRs) by the particle detector groups ATLAS and CMS to facilitate the test of the new theoretical ideas at the LHC. Which of these ideas stands the test of the LHC data will govern the course of particle physics in the subsequent decades.

Trimaximal lepton mixing with a trivial Dirac phase

We present a model which employs the seesaw mechanism with five right-handed neutrinos, leading to trimaximal and CP-conserving lepton mixing. Tri-bimaximal mixing is a natural limiting case of our model which occurs when one particular vacuum expectation value is real and preserves the mu-tau interchange symmetry of the Lagrangian. Our model allows for leptogenesis even in the case of exact tri-bimaximal mixing.

Type II seesaw mechanism for Higgs doublets and the scale of new physics

We elaborate on an earlier proposal by Ernest Ma of a type II seesaw mechanism for suppressing the vacuum expectation values of some Higgs doublets. We emphasize that, by nesting this form of seesaw mechanism into various other seesaw mechanisms, one may obtain light neutrino masses in such a way that the new-physics scale present in the seesaw mechanism - the masses of scalar gauge-SU(2) triplets, scalar SU(2) doublets, or right-handed neutrinos - does not need to be higher than a few 10 TeV. We also investigate other usages of the type II seesaw mechanism for Higgs doublets. For instance, the suppression of the vacuum expectation values of Higgs doublets may realize Froggatt-Nielsen suppression factors in some entries of the fermion mass matrices.

A three-parameter neutrino mass matrix with maximal CP violation

Using the seesaw mechanism, we construct a model for the light-neutrino Majorana mass matrix which yields trimaximal lepton mixing together with maximal CP violation and maximal atmospheric-neutrino mixing. We demonstrate that, in our model, the light-neutrino mass matrix retains its form under the one-loop renormalization-group evolution. With our neutrino mass matrix, the absolute neutrino mass scale is a function of |U_e3| and of the atmospheric mass-squared difference. We study the effective mass in neutrinoless double beta-decay as a function of |U_e3|, showing that it contains a fourfold ambiguity.

Charged-fermion masses in SO(10): analysis with scalars in 10+120

We consider the scenario in which the mass matrices of the charged fermions in the SO(10) Grand Unified Theory are generated exclusively by renormalizable Yukawa couplings to one $\mathbf{10} \oplus \mathbf{120}$ representation of scalars. We analyze, partly analytically and partly numerically, this scenario in the three-generations case. We demonstrate that it leads to unification of the $b$ and $τ$ masses at the GUT scale. Testing this scenario against the mass values at the GUT scale, obtained from the renormalization-group evolution in the minimal SUSY extension of the Standard Model, we find that it is not viable: either the down-quark mass or the top-quark mass must be unrealistically low. If we include the CKM mixing angles in the test, then, in order that the mixing angles are well reproduced, either the top-quark mass or the strange-quark mass together with the down-quark mass must be very low. We conclude that, assuming a SUSY SO(10) scenario, charged-fermion mass generation based exclusively on one $\mathbf{10} \oplus \mathbf{120}$ representation of scalars is in contradiction with experiment.

On a model with two zeros in the neutrino mass matrix

We consider a Majorana neutrino mass matrix $\mathcal{M}_ν$ with $(\mathcal{M}_ν)_{μμ} = (\mathcal{M}_ν)_{ττ} = 0$, in the basis where the charged-lepton mass matrix is diagonal. We show that this pattern for the lepton mass matrices can be enforced by extending the Standard Model with three scalar SU(2) triplets and by using a horizontal symmetry group $\mathbbm{Z}_4$. The Ma--Sarkar (type-II seesaw) mechanism leads to very small vacuum expectation values for the triplets, thus explaining the smallness of the neutrino masses; at the same time, that mechanism renders the physical scalars originating in the triplets very heavy. We show that the conditions $(\mathcal{M}_ν)_{μμ} = (\mathcal{M}_ν)_{ττ} = 0$ allow both for a normal neutrino mass spectrum and for an inverted one. In the first case, the neutrino masses must be larger than $0.1 {eV}$ and the atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$ must be practically equal to $45^\circ$. In the second case, the product $\sin{θ_{13}} | \tan{2 θ_{23}} |$ must be of order one or larger, thus correlating the large or maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing with the smallness of the mixing angle $θ_{13}$.

Renormalization of the neutrino mass operators in the multi-Higgs-doublet Standard Model

We derive the renormalization group equations (RGE) for the flavour coupling matrices of the effective dimension-five operators which yield Majorana neutrino masses in the multi-Higgs-doublet Standard Model; in particular, we consider the case where two different scalar doublets occur in those operators. We also write down the RGE for the scalar-potential quartic couplings and for the Yukawa couplings of that model, in the absence of quarks. As an application of the RGE, we consider two models which, based on a mu-tau interchange symmetry, predict maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing, together with U_{e3} = 0, at the seesaw scale. We estimate the change of those predictions due to the evolution of the coupling matrices of the effective mass operators from the seesaw scale down to the electroweak scale. We derive an upper bound on that change, thereby finding that the radiative corrections to those predictions are in general negligible.

Softly broken lepton number L_e - L_μ- L_τwith non-maximal solar neutrino mixing

We consider the most general neutrino mass matrix which leads to $θ_{13} = 0$, and present the formulae needed for obtaining the neutrino masses and mixing parameters in that case. We apply this formalism to a model based on the lepton number $\bar L = L_e - L_μ- L_τ$ and on the seesaw mechanism. This model needs only one Higgs doublet and has only two right-handed neutrino singlets. Soft $\bar L$ breaking is accomplished by the Majorana mass terms of the right-handed neutrinos; if the $\bar L$-conserving and $\bar L$-breaking mass terms are of the same order of magnitude, then it is possible to obtain a consistent $\bar L$ model with a solar mixing angle significantly smaller than $45^\circ$. We show that the predictions of this model, $m_3 = 0$ and $θ_{13} = 0$, are invariant under the renormalization-group running of the neutrino mass matrix.

preprint2003arXiv

A discrete symmetry group for maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing

We propose a discrete non-abelian symmetry group which enforces maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing, while $θ_{13} = 0$ and the solar mixing angle $θ_{12}$ remains undetermined; without finetuning, $θ_{12}$ will be large but non-maximal. Our extension of the Standard Model has three right-handed neutrino singlets $ν_R$ and implements the seesaw mechanism. Furthermore, we have an enlarged scalar sector with three Higgs doublets and two scalar gauge singlets; the latter have masses and vacuum expectation values of the order of the seesaw scale. Lepton mixing stems exclusively from the $ν_R$ Majorana mass matrix, where non-diagonal elements are generated by the vacuum expectation values of the scalar singlets. The model predicts a neutrino mass spectrum with $m_3 > m_2 > m_1$ and the effective Majorana mass of neutrinoless $ββ$ decay is equal to $m_1 m_2 / m_3$.

A non-standard CP transformation leading to maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing

We discuss a neutrino mass matrix $\mathcal{M}_ν$ originally found by Babu, Ma, and Valle (BMV) and show that this mass matrix can be characterized by a simple algebraic relation. From this relation it follows that atmospheric neutrino mixing is exactly maximal while at the same time an arbitrary mixing angle $θ_{13}$ of the lepton mixing matrix $U$ is allowed and--in the usual phase convention--CP violation in mixing is maximal; moreover, neither the neutrino mass spectrum nor the solar mixing angle are restricted. We put forward a simple seesaw extension of the Standard Model where the family lepton numbers are softly broken by the Majorana mass terms of the right-handed neutrino singlets and the BMV mass matrix results from a non-standard $CP$ symmetry.

preprint2002arXiv

Maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing in an SU(5) model

We show that maximal atmospheric and large solar neutrino mixing can be implemented in SU(5) gauge theories, by making use of the $U(1)_F$ symmetry associated with a suitably defined family number $F$, together with a $\mathbbm{Z}_2$ symmetry which does not commute with $F$. $U(1)_F$ is softly broken by the mass terms of the right-handed neutrino singlets, which are responsible for the seesaw mechanism; in addition, $U(1)_F$ is also spontaneously broken at the electroweak scale. In our scenario, lepton mixing stems exclusively from the right-handed-neutrino Majorana mass matrix, whereas the CKM matrix originates solely in the up-type-quark sector. We show that, despite the non-supersymmetric character of our model, unification of the gauge couplings can be achieved at a scale $10^{16} \mathrm{GeV} < m_U < 10^{19} \mathrm{GeV}$; indeed, we have found a particular solution to this problem which yields results almost identical to the ones of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

preprint2001arXiv

Softly broken lepton numbers and maximal neutrino mixing

We consider lepton mixing in an extension of the Standard Model with three right-handed neutrino singlets. We require that the three lepton numbers L_e, L_μ, and L_τbe separately conserved in the Yukawa couplings, and we assume that they are softly broken only by the Majorana mass matrix M_R of the neutrino singlets. In this framework, where lepton-number breaking occurs at a scale much higher than the electroweak scale, deviations from family-lepton-number conservation are calculable and finite, and lepton mixing stems exclusively from M_R. We then show that a discrete symmetry exists such that, in the lepton mixing matrix U, maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing together with U_{e3}=0 can be obtained naturally. Alternatively, if one assumes that there are two different scales in M_R and that the lepton number \bar L = L_e - L_μ- L_τis conserved in between them, then maximal solar neutrino mixing follows naturally. If both the discrete symmetry and intermediate \bar L conservation are introduced, bimaximal mixing is achieved.

Testing CPT invariance by using C-even neutral-meson--antimeson correlated states

We consider the decays of a correlated neutral-meson--antimeson state with C-parity +1. We show that there is CPT noninvariance in the mixing of the neutral mesons if, for any two decay modes f and g, the decay rate has a component R_A which is antisymmetric under the interchange of the decay times t_1 and t_2. In particular, one may cleanly extract the CPT-noninvariance parameter with the help of R_A by using opposite-sign dilepton events.

Solution of the strong CP problem

I put forward an SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1) model in which spontaneously broken parity symmetry makes it that strong CP violation only arises at three-loop level. All leptons and up-type quarks are in doublets either of SU(2)_L or of SU(2)_R, but there are singlet down-type quarks. A bi-doublet of scalars is introduced which has only one component with non-vanishing expectation value, thereby avoiding W_L-W_R mixing. The scalar potential is such that scalar-pseudoscalar mixing does not occur either.

CP violation in the two-Higgs-doublet model: an example

In a general two-scalar-doublet model without fermions, there is a unique source of CP violation, $ J_1 $, in the gauge interactions of the scalars. It arises in the mixing of the three neutral physical scalars $ X_1 $, $ X_2 $ and $ X_3 $. CP violation may be observed via different decay rates for $ X_1 \rightarrow H^+ W^- $ and $ X_1 \rightarrow H^- W^+ $ (or, alternatively, for $ H^+ \rightarrow X_1 W^+ $ and $ H^- \rightarrow X_1 W^- $ --- depending on which decays are kinematically allowed). I compute the part of those CP-violating decay-rate differences which is proportional to $ J_1 $. The CP-invariant final-state-interaction phase is provided by the absorptive parts of the one-loop diagrams. I check the gauge invariance of the whole calculation.

Fundamental CP-violating quantities in a SU(2)$ \otimes $U(1) model with many Higgs doublets

We consider a SU(2)$ \otimes $U(1) gauge theory with many scalar doublets, but without fermions. Those quantities provide a basis-independent way of checking for the existence of CP violation.

Signatures of discrete symmetries in the scalar sector

I discuss methods to identify the presence of dicrete symmetries in the two-Higgs-doublet model by observing the masses and the cubic and quartic interactions of the scalars. The symmetries considered are a $ Z_2 $ symmetry under which $ ϕ_2 \rightarrow - ϕ_2 $, and a CP symmetry which enforces real coupling constants in the Higgs potential. Those symmetries are spontaneously broken, and the $ Z_2 $ symmetry may also be softly broken. I identify the signatures in the interactions of the scalars that these symmetries leave after their breaking.
