Normalized Google Distance of Multisets with Applications

Normalized Google distance (NGD) is a relative semantic distance based on the World Wide Web (or any other large electronic database, for instance Wikipedia) and a search engine that returns aggregate page counts. The earlier NGD between pairs of search terms (including phrases) is not sufficient for all applications. We propose an NGD of finite multisets of search terms that is better for many applications. This gives a relative semantics shared by a multiset of search terms. We give applications and compare the results with those obtained using the pairwise NGD. The derivation of NGD method is based on Kolmogorov complexity.

On Logical Depth and the Running Time of Shortest Programs

The logical depth with significance bb of a finite binary string xx is the shortest running time of a binary program for xx that can be compressed by at most bb bits. There is another definition of logical depth. We give two theorems about the quantitative relation between these versions: the first theorem concerns a variation of a known fact with a new proof, the second theorem and its proof are new. We select the above version of logical depth and show the following. There is an infinite sequence of strings of increasing length such that for each jj there is a bb such that the logical depth of the jjth string as a function of jj is incomputable (it rises faster than any computable function) but with bb replaced by b+1b+1 the resuling function is computable. Hence the maximal gap between the logical depths resulting from incrementing appropriate bb's by 1 rises faster than any computable function. All functions mentioned are upper bounded by the Busy Beaver function. Since for every string its logical depth is nonincreasing in bb, the minimal computation time of the shortest programs for the sequence of strings as a function of jj rises faster than any computable function but not so fast as the Busy Beaver function.

On the logical depth function

For a finite binary string xx its logical depth dd for significance bb is the shortest running time of a program for xx of length K(x)+bK(x)+b. There is another definition of logical depth. We give a new proof that the two versions are close. There is an infinite sequence of strings of consecutive lengths such that for every string there is a bb such that incrementing bb by 1 makes the associated depths go from incomputable to computable. The maximal gap between depths resulting from incrementing appropriate bb's by 1 is incomputable. The size of this gap is upper bounded by the Busy Beaver function. Both the upper and the lower bound hold for the depth with significance 0. As a consequence, the minimal computation time of the associated shortest programs rises faster than any computable function but not so fast as the Busy Beaver function.

Information Distance: New Developments

In pattern recognition, learning, and data mining one obtains information from information-carrying objects. This involves an objective definition of the information in a single object, the information to go from one object to another object in a pair of objects, the information to go from one object to any other object in a multiple of objects, and the shared information between objects. This is called "information distance." We survey a selection of new developments in information distance.
