Nodeless superconductivity in noncentrosymmetric LaRhSn

The superconducting order parameter of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor LaRhSn is investigated by means of low temperature measurements of the specific heat, muon-spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) and the tunnel-diode oscillator (TDO) based method. The specific heat and magnetic penetration depth [$λ(T)$] show an exponentially activated temperature dependence, demonstrating fully gapped superconductivity in LaRhSn. The temperature dependence of $λ^{-2}(T)$ deduced from the TDO based method and $μ$SR show nearly identical behavior, which can be well described by a single-gap $s$-wave model, with a zero temperature gap value of $Δ(0)=1.77(4)k_BT_c$. The zero-field $μ$SR spectra do not show detectable changes upon cooling below $T_c$, and therefore there is no evidence for time-reversal-symmetry breaking in the superconducting state.

Nodeless time-reversal symmetry breaking in the centrosymmetric superconductor Sc$_5$Co$_4$Si$_{10}$ probed by muon-spin spectroscopy

We investigate the superconducting properties of Sc$_{5}$Co$_{4}$Si$_{10}$ using low-temperature resistivity, magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. We find that Sc$_{5}$Co$_{4}$Si$_{10}$ {exhibits type-II} superconductivity with a superconducting transition temperature $T_\mathrm{C}= 3.5 (1)$\,K. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density obtained from transverse-field $μ$SR spectra is best modeled using an isotropic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer type $s$-wave gap symmetry with $2Δ/k_\mathrm{B}T_\mathrm{C} = 2.84(2)$. However, the zero-field muon-spin relaxation asymmetry reveals the appearance of a spontaneous magnetic field below $T_\mathrm{C}$, indicating that time-reversal symmetry (TRS) is broken in the superconducting state. Although this behavior is commonly associated with non-unitary or mixed singlet-triplet pairing, our group-theoretical analysis of the Ginzburg-Landau free energy alongside density functional theory calculations indicates that unconventional mechanisms are pretty unlikely. Therefore, we have hypothesized that TRS breaking may occur via a conventional electron-phonon process.

Quantum muon diffusion and the preservation of time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state of type-I rhenium

Elemental rhenium exhibiting type-II superconductivity has been previously reported to break time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. We have investigated an arc-melted sample of rhenium exhibiting type-I superconductivity. Low temperature zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements indicate that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state. Muon diffusion is observed, which is due to quantum mechanical tunneling between interstitial sites. The normal state behavior is characterized by the conduction electrons screening the muons and thermal broadening, and is typical for a metal. Energy asymmetries between muon trapping sites and the superconducting energy gap also characterize the superconducting state behavior.

Time-reversal symmetry breaking in frustrated superconductor Re$_2$Hf

Geometrical frustration leads to novel quantum phenomena such as the spin-liquid phase in triangular and Kagomé lattices. Intra-band and inter-band Fermi surface (FS) nesting can drive unique superconducting (SC) ground states with $d$-wave and $s^{\pm}$ pairing symmetries, respectively, according to the criterion that the SC gap changes sign across the nesting wavevector. For an odd number of FSs, when multiple inter-band nesting is of comparable strength, the sign-reversal criterion between different FS sheets can leads to frustration, which promotes novel SC order parameters. Here we report the experimental observation of a time-reversal symmetry breaking pairing state in Re$_2$Hf resulting from FS nesting frustration. Furthermore, our electronic specific heat and transverse-field $μ$SR experiments suggest a fully gaped pairing symmetry. The first-principle electronic structure calculation reveals multiple Fermi surface sheets with comparable inter-band nesting strength. Implementing the {\it ab-initio} band structure, we compute spin-fluctuation mediated SC pairing symmetry which reveals a $s+is'$-pairing state - consistent with experimental observations. Our investigation demonstrates a novel SC state which provides a putative setting for both applied and fundamental study.

Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking Superconductivity in Three-Dimensional Dirac Semimetallic Silicides

Superconductors with broken time-reversal symmetry represent arguably one of the most promising venues for realizing highly sought-after topological superconductivity that is vital to fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here, by using extensive muon-spin relaxation and rotation measurements, we report that the isostructural silicide superconductors (Ta, Nb)OsSi spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry at the superconducting transition while surprisingly showing a fully-gapped superconductivity characteristic of conventional superconductors. The first-principles calculations show that (Ta, Nb)OsSi are three-dimensional Dirac semimetals protected by nonsymmorphic symmetries. Taking advantage of the exceptional low symmetry crystal structure of these materials, we have performed detailed theoretical calculations to establish that the superconducting ground state for both (Ta, Nb)OsSi is most likely a nonunitary triplet state.

Muon spin rotation and relaxation study on topological noncentrosymmetric superconductor PbTaSe$_2$

Topological superconductivity is an exotic phenomenon due to the symmetry-protected topological surface state, in which a quantum system has an energy gap in the bulk but supports gapless excitations confined to its boundary. Symmetries including central and time-reversal (TRS), along with their relations with topology, are crucial for topological superconductivity. We report muon spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) experiments on a topological noncentrosymmetric superconductor PbTaSe$_2$ to study its TRS and gap symmetry. Zero-field $μ$SR experiments indicate the absence of internal magnetic field in the superconducting state, consistent with previous $μ$SR results. Furthermore, transverse-field $μ$SR measurements reveals that the superconducting gap of PbTaSe$_2$ is an isotropic three-dimensional fully-gapped single-band. The fully-gapped results can help understand the pairing mechanism and further classify the topological superconductivity in this system.

Non-Fermi liquid behavior in a mixed valent metallic pyrochlore iridate Pb$_2$Ir$_2$O$_{7-δ}$

Non-Fermi liquid behavior in some fermionic systems have attracted significant interest in last few decades. Certain pyrochlore iridates with stronger spin-orbit coupling strength have recently been added to the list. Here, we provide evidence of such a non-Fermi liquid ground state in another mixed valent metallic pyrochlore iridate Pb$_2$Ir$_2$O$_{7-δ}$, through the combined investigation of electronic, magnetic and thermodynamic properties as a function of temperature ($T$) and applied magnetic field ($H$). Resistivity measurement showed a linear temperature dependence down to 15~K below which it shows $ρ\sim T^{3/2}$ dependence while magnetic susceptibility diverges as $χ$(T) $\sim$ $T^{-α}$ ($α< 1$) below 10~K. While a strong negative $Θ_{CW}$ has been observed from Curie-Weiss fitting, absence of any long range order down to 80~mK only indicates presence of strong inherent geometric frustration in the system. Heat capacity data showed $C_p$ $\sim$ $T\ln(T_0/T)$ + $βT^3$ dependence below 15~K down to 1.8~K. More importantly spin-orbit coupling strength by x-ray absorption spectroscopy was found to be weaker in Pb$_2$Ir$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ compared to other pyrochlore iridates. In absence of any large moment rare earth magnetic ion, Pb$_2$Ir$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ presents a rare example of an irirdate system showing non-Fermi liquid behaviour due to disordered distribution of Ir$^{4+}$ and Ir$^{5+}$ having markedly different strengths of spin-orbit coupling which might offer a prescription for achieving new non-Fermi liquid systems.

Superconducting and normal state properties of high entropy alloy Nb-Re-Hf-Zr-Tiinvestigated by muon spin relaxation and rotation

Superconducting high entropy alloy (HEA) are emerging as a new class of superconducting materials. It provides a unique opportunity to understand the complex interplay of disorder and superconductivity. We report the synthesis and detail bulk and microscopic characterization of Nb$_{60}$Re$_{10}$Zr$_{10}$Hf$_{10}$Ti$_{10}$ HEA alloy using transport, magnetization, specific heat, and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. Bulk superconductivity with transition temperature $T_{C}$ = 5.7 K confirmed by magnetization, resistivity, and heat capacity measurements. Zero-field $μ$SR measurement shows that the superconducting state preserves time-reversal symmetry, and transverse-field measurements of the superfluid density are well described by an isotropic s-wave model.

Anisotropic transport and quantum oscillations in the quasi-one-dimensional TaNiTe5: Evidence for the nontrivial band topology

The past decade has witnessed the burgeoning discovery of a variety of topological states of matter with distinct nontrivial band topologies. Thus far, most of materials studied possess two-dimensional or three-dimensional electronic structures, with only a few exceptions that host quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) topological electronic properties. Here we present the clear-cut evidence for Dirac fermions in the quasi-1D telluride TaNiTe5. We show that its transport behaviors are highly anisotropic and we observe nontrivial Berry phases via the quantum oscillation measurements. The nontrivial band topology is further corroborated by first-principles calculations. Our results may help to guide the future quest for topological states in this new family of quasi-1D ternary chalcogenides.

Evidence of nodal superconductivity in LaFeSiH

Unconventional superconductivity has recently been discovered in the first iron-based superconducting silicide LaFeSiH. By using the complementary techniques of muon spin rotation, tunneling diode oscillator and density functional theory, we investigate the magnetic penetration depth and thereby the superconducting gap of this novel high-temperature superconductor. We find that the magnetic penetration depth displays a sub-$T^2$ behavior in the low-temperature regime below $T_c/3$, which evidences a nodal structure of the gap (or a gap with very deep minima). Even if the topology of the computed Fermi surface is compatible with the $s_\pm$-wave case with accidental nodes, its nesting and orbital-content features may eventually result in a $d$-wave state, more unusual for high-temperature superconductors of this class.

Study of the superconducting ground state of topological superconducting candidates Ti$_{3}$X (X = Ir, Sb)

The topologically non-trivial band structure of A15 compounds has drawn attention owing to the possible realization of topological superconductivity. Here, we report a microscopic investigation of the superconducting ground state in A15 compound Ti$_{3}$X (X = Ir, Sb) by muon spectroscopy measurements. Zero field muon measurements have shown that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in these materials. Furthermore, specific heat and a transverse field muon spectroscopy measurement rule out any possibility to have a nodal or anisotropic superconducting gap, revealing a conventional s-wave nature in the superconducting ground state. This work classifies A15 compound Ti$_{3}$X (X = Ir, Sb) as a time-reversal preserved topological superconductor.

Unconventional superconducting properties of noncentrosymmetric Re5.5Ta

Rhenium based noncentrosymmetric superconductors crystallizing in $α$-Mn structure have become potential candidates to exhibit an unconventional superconducting ground-state. Here we report a detailed investigation on the superconducting and normal state properties of Re$_{5.5}$Ta, that also has the $α$-Mn structure. Magnetization, specific heat, and transport measurements confirm the bulk superconducting transition \textit{T}$_{C}$ at 8.0 K. Upper critical field value (H$_{C2}$(0)) calculated from magnetization, specific heat and AC transport measurements exceed the Pauli paramagnetic limit (14.7 T), indicating that the superconducting properties of Re$_{5.5}$Ta are probably unconventional in nature. However, low-temperature specific heat and transverse-field muon spin rotation measurements suggest a surprising nodeless isotropic superconducting gap, although with strong electron-phonon coupling.

Investigation of Superconducting Gap Structure in HfIrSi using muon spin relaxation/rotation

Appearance of strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is apparent in ternary equiatomic compounds with 5$d$-electrons due to the large atomic radii of transition metals. SOC plays a significant role in the emergence of unconventional superconductivity. Here we examined the superconducting state of HfIrSi using magnetization, specific heat, zero and transverse-field (ZF/TF) muon spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) measurements. Superconductivity is observed at $T_\mathrm{C}$ = 3.6 K as revealed by specific heat and magnetization measurements. From the TF$-μ$SR analysis it is clear that superfluid density well described by an isotropic BCS type $s$-wave gap structure. Furthermore, from TF$-μ$SR data we have also estimated the superconducting carrier density $n_\mathrm{s}$ = 6.6 $\times$10$^{26}$m$^{-3}$, London penetration depth $λ_{L}(0)$ = 259.59 nm and effective mass $m^{*}$ = 1.57 $m_{e}$. Our zero-field muon spin relaxation data indicate no clear sign of spontaneous internal field below $T_\mathrm{C}$, which implies that the time-reversal symmetry is preserved in HfIrSi. Theoretical investigation suggests Hf and Ir atoms hybridize strongly along the $c$-axis of the lattice, which is responsible for the strong three-dimensionality of this system which screens the Coulomb interaction. As a result despite the presence of correlated $d$-electrons in this system, the correlation effect is weakened, promoting electron-phonon coupling to gain importance.

Ir 5$d$-band Derived Superconductivity in LaIr$_3$

We have studied the superconducting properties of LaIr$_3$ with a rhombohedral structure using magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. The zero-field cooled and field cooled susceptibility measurements exhibit a superconducting transition below $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 2.5 K. Magnetization measurements indicate bulk type-II superconductivity with upper critical field $μ_0H_{\mathrm{c2}}(0)$ = 3.84 T. Two successive transitions are observed in heat capacity data, one at $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 2.5 K and a second at 1.2 K below $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ whose origin remain unclear. The heat capacity jump reveals $ΔC$/$γT_{\mathrm{C}} \sim$ 1.0 which is lower than 1.43 expected for BCS weak coupling limit. Transverse field-$μ$SR measurements reveal a fully gapped $s-$wave superconductivity with 2$Δ(0)/k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 3.31, which is small compared to BCS value 3.56, suggesting weak coupling superconductivity. Moreover the study of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth estimated using the transverse field-$μ$SR measurements gives a zero temperature value of the magnetic penetration depth $λ_{\mathrm{L}}(0)$ = 386(3) nm, superconducting carrier density $n_{\mathrm{s}}$ = 2.9(1) $\times$10$^{27}$ carriers $m^{-3}$ and the carriers' effective-mass enhancement $m^{*}$ = 1.53(1) $m_{\mathrm{e}}$. Our zero-field-$μ$SR measurements do not reveal the spontaneous appearance of an internal magnetic field below the transition temperature, which indicates that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state of LaIr$_3$.

Nodeless s-wave superconductivity in the α-Mn structure type noncentrosymmetric superconductor TaOs: A μSR study

Noncentrosymmetric superconductors can lead to a variety of exotic properties in the superconducting state such as line nodes, multigap behavior, and time-reversal symmetry breaking. In this paper, we report the properties of the new noncentrosymmetric superconductor TaOs, using muon spin relaxation and rotation measurements. It is shown using the zero-field muon experiment that TaOs preserve the time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. From the transverse field muon measurements, we extract the temperature dependence of $λ(T)$ which is proportional to the superfluid density. This data can be fit with a fully gapped s-wave model for $α$ = $Δ(0)/k_{B}T_{c}$ = 2.01 $\pm$ 0.02. Furthermore, the value of magnetic penetration depth is found to be 5919 $\pm$ 45 \textÅ, which is consistent with the value obtained from the bulk measurements.

Spin-dimer ground state driven by consecutive charge and orbital ordering transitions in the anionic mixed-valence compound Rb$_4$O$_6$

Recently, a Verwey-type transition in the mixed-valence alkali sesquioxide Cs$_4$O$_6$ was deduced from the charge ordering of molecular peroxide O$_2^{2-}$ and superoxide O$_2^-$ anions accompanied by the structural transformation and a dramatic change in electronic conductivity [Adler et al, Sci. Adv 4, eaap7581 (2018)]. Here, we report that in the sister compound Rb$_4$O$_6$ a similar Verwey-type charge ordering transition is strongly linked to O$_2^-$ orbital and spin dynamics. On cooling, a powder neutron diffraction experiment reveals a charge ordering and a cubic-to-tetragonal transition at $T_{\rm CO}=290$ K, which is followed by a further structural instability at $T_{\rm s}=92$ K that involves an additional reorientation of magnetic O$_2^-$ anions. Magnetic resonance techniques supported by density functional theory computations suggest the emergence of a peculiar type of $π^*$-orbital ordering of the magnetically active O$_2^-$ units, which promotes the formation of a quantum spin state composed of weakly coupled spin dimers. These results reveal that similarly as in 3$d$ transition metal compounds, also in in the $π^*$ open-shell alkali sesquioxides the interplay between Jahn-Teller-like electron-lattice coupling and Kugel-Khomskii-type superexchange determines the nature of orbital ordering and the magnetic ground state.

Bulk superconductivity at 84 K in the strongly overdoped regime of cuprates

By means of magnetization, specific heat and muon-spin relaxation measurements, we investigate high-pressure oxidized \mohpo, in which overdoping is achieved up to $p \sim 0.45$ hole/Cu, well beyond the $T_c - p$ superconducting dome of cuprates, where Fermi liquid behavior is expected. Surprisingly, we find bulk superconductivity with $T_c$=84 K and superfluid density similar to those of optimally doped Y123. On the other hand, specific heat data display a large electronic contribution at low temperature, comparable to that of nonsuperconducting overdoped La214. These results point at an unusual high-$T_c$ phase with a large fraction of unpaired holes. Further experiments may assess the Fermi liquid properties of the present phase, which would put into question the paradigm that the high $T_c$ of cuprates originates from a non-Fermi liquid ground state.

Fully gapped superconductivity in the topological superconductor beta-PdBi2

The recent discovery of the topologically protected surface states in the beta-phase of PdBi2 has reignited the research interest in this class of superconductors. Here, we show results of our muon spin relaxation and rotation (muSR) measurements carried out to investigate the superconducting and magnetic properties and the topological effect in the superconducting ground state of beta-PdBi2. Zero-field muSR data reveal that no sizeable spontaneous magnetization arises with the onset of superconductivity implying that the time reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state of beta-PdBi2. Further, a strong diamagnetic shift of the applied field has been observed in the transverse-field (TF) muSR experiments, indicating that any triplet-pairing channel, if present, does not dominate the superconducting condensate. Using TF-muSR, we estimate that the magnetic penetration depth is 263(10) nm at zero temperature. Temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth provides evidence for the existence of a nodeless single s-wave type isotropic energy gap of 0.78(1) meV at zero temperature. Our results further suggest that the topologically protected surface states have no effect on the bulk of the superconductor.

Probing the pairing symmetry in the over-doped Fe-based superconductor Ba_0.35Rb_0.65Fe_2As_2 as a function of hydrostatic pressure

We report muon spin rotation experiments on the magnetic penetration depth lambda and the temperature dependence of lambda^{-2} in the over-doped Fe-based high-temperature superconductor (Fe-HTS) Ba_{1-x}Rb_ xFe_2As_2 (x = 0.65) studied at ambient and under hydrostatic pressures up to p = 2.3 GPa. We find that in this system lambda^{-2}(T) is best described by d-wave scenario. This is in contrast to the case of the optimally doped x = 0.35 system which is known to be a nodeless s^{+-}-wave superconductor. This suggests that the doping induces the change of the pairing symmetry from s^{+-} to d-wave in Ba_{1-x}Rb_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}. In addition, we find that the d-wave order parameter is robust against pressure, suggesting that d is the common and dominant pairing symmetry in over-doped Ba_{1-x}Rb_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}. Application of pressure of p = 2.3 GPa causes a decrease of lambda(0) by less than 5 %, while at optimal doping x = 0.35 a significant decrease of lambda(0) was reported. The superconducting transition temperature T_c as well as the gap to T_c ratio 2Delta/k_BT_c show only a modest decrease with pressure. By combining the present data with those previously obtained for optimally doped system x = 0.35 and for the end member x = 1 we conclude that the SC gap symmetry as well as the pressure effects on the SC quantities strongly depend on the Rb doping level. These results are discussed in the light of the putative Lifshitz transition, i.e., a disappearance of the electron pockets in the Fermi surface of Ba_{1-x}Rb_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2} upon hole doping.

Role of magnetic dopants in the phase diagram of Sm1111 pnictides: The Mn case

The deliberate insertion of magnetic Mn dopants in the Fe sites of the optimally-doped SmFeAsO0.88-F0.12 iron-based superconductor can modify in a controlled way its electronic properties. The resulting phase diagram was investigated across a wide range of manganese contents (x) by means of muon-spin spectroscopy (muSR), both in zero- and in transverse fields, respectively, to probe the magnetic and the superconducting order. The pure superconducting phase (at x < 0.03) is replaced by a crossover region at intermediate Mn values (0.03 =< x < 0.08), where superconductivity coexists with static magnetic order. After completely suppressing superconductivity for x = 0.08, a further increase in Mn content reinforces the natural tendency towards antiferromagnetic correlations among the magnetic Mn ions. The sharp drop of Tc and the induced magnetic order in the presence of magnetic disorder/dopants, such as Mn, are both consistent with a recent theoretical model of unconventional superconductors [M. Gastiasoro et al., ArXiv 1606.09495], which includes correlation-enhanced RKKY-couplings between the impurity moments.

Nodeless superconductivity in quasi-one-dimensional Nb2PdS5: A muSR study

Muon spin relaxation and rotation (muSR) measurements have been performed to study the superconducting and magnetic properties of Nb2PdS5. Zero-field muSR data show that no sizeable spontaneous magnetization arises with the onset of superconductivity in Nb2PdS5 which indicates that the time reversal symmetry is probably preserved in the superconducting state of this system. A strong diamagnetic shift is observed in the transverse-field muSR data practically ruling out a dominant triplet-pairing superconducting state in Nb2PdS5. The temperature dependence of magnetic penetration depth evidences the existence of a single s-wave energy gap with a gap value of 1.07(4) meV at zero temperature. The gap to Tc ratio, 2.02(9), indicates that Nb2PdS5 should be considered as a moderately strong-coupling superconductor. The magnetic penetration depth at zero temperature is 785(20) nm, indicating a very low superfluid density consistent with the quasi-one-dimensional nature of this system.

Pressure-induced electronic phase separation of magnetism and superconductivity in CrAs

The recent discovery of pressure induced superconductivity in the binary helimagnet CrAs has attracted much attention. How superconductivity emerges from the magnetic state and what is the mechanism of the superconducting pairing are two important issues which need to be resolved. In the present work, the suppression of magnetism and the occurrence of superconductivity in CrAs as a function of pressure ($p$) were studied by means of muon spin rotation. The magnetism remains bulk up to $p\simeq3.5$~kbar while its volume fraction gradually decreases with increasing pressure until it vanishes at $p\simeq$7~kbar. At 3.5 kbar superconductivity abruptly appears with its maximum $T_c \simeq 1.2$~K which decreases upon increasing the pressure. In the intermediate pressure region ($3.5\lesssim p\lesssim 7$~kbar) the superconducting and the magnetic volume fractions are spatially phase separated and compete for phase volume. Our results indicate that the less conductive magnetic phase provides additional carriers (doping) to the superconducting parts of the CrAs sample thus leading to an increase of the transition temperature ($T_c$) and of the superfluid density ($ρ_s$). A scaling of $ρ_s$ with $T_c^{3.2}$ as well as the phase separation between magnetism and superconductivity point to a conventional mechanism of the Cooper-pairing in CrAs.

Spin-orbital liquid state assisted by singlet-triplet excitation in $J~=~0$ ground state of Ba$_3$ZnIr$_2$O$_9$

Strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects of heavy $d$-orbital elements have long been neglected in describing the ground states of their compounds thereby overlooking a variety of fascinating and yet unexplored magnetic and electronic states, until recently. The spin-orbit entangled electrons in such compounds can get stabilized into unusual spin-orbit multiplet $J$-states which warrants severe investigations. Here we show using detailed magnetic and thermodynamic studies and theoretical calculations the ground state of Ba$_3$ZnIr$_2$O$_9$, a 6$H$ hexagonal perovskite is a close realisation of the elusive $J$~=~0 state. However, we find that local Ir moments are spontaneously generated due to the comparable energy scales of the singlet-triplet splitting driven by SOC and the superexchange interaction mediated by strong intra-dimer hopping. While the Ir ions within the structural Ir$_2$O$_9$ dimer prefers to form a spin-orbit singlet state (SOS) with no resultant moment, substantial interdimer exchange interactions from a frustrated lattice ensure quantum fluctuations till the lowest measured temperatures and stabilize a spin-orbital liquid phase.

Strong enhancement of conventional superconductivity near a quantum critical point of (Ca,Sr)_3Ir_4Sn_13

Competing electronic states are found in the large majority of unconventional superconductors, including high-Tc cuprates, iron based superconductors and many heavy fermion systems. The complex interplay is reflected in phase diagrams as a function of doping or other tuning parameters involving besides superconducting other phases (often magnetic) and quantum critical points. Superconductivity is also found in the vicinity of charge density wave (CDW) order in phase diagrams reminiscent of superconductivity mediated by magnetic fluctuations. There is however less knowledge about the interplay of superconductivity and CDW compared to the magnetic analogon. Here we report about microscopic studies by muon spin rotation as a function of pressure of the Ca_3Ir_4Sn_13 and Sr_3Ir_4Sn_13 cubic compounds, which display superconductivity and a structural phase transition associated with the formation of a CDW. We find a strong enhancement of the superfluid density and of the coupling strength above a pressure of about 1.6 GPa giving direct evidence of the presence of a quantum critical point separating a superconducting phase coexisting with CDW from a pure superconducting phase. The superconducting order parameter in both phases are found to have the same s-wave symmetry. In spite of the conventional phonon-mediated BCS character of this compound, the dependence of the effective superfluid density on the critical temperature puts this system in the "Uemura" plot close to unconventional superconductors.

$^{119}$Sn-NMR investigations on superconducting Ca$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$: Evidence for multigap superconductivity

We report bulk superconductivity (SC) in Ca$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$ by means of $^{119}$Sn nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. Two classical signatures of BCS superconductivity in spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$), namely the Hebel-Slichter coherence peak just below the $T_c$ and the exponential decay in the superconducting phase, are evident. The noticeable decrease of $^{119}$Sn Knight shift below $T_c$ indicates spin-singlet superconductivity. The temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) is convincingly described by the multigap isotropic superconducting gap. Present NMR experiments do not witness any sign of enhanced spin fluctuations in the normal state.

Direct observation of the spin texture in strongly correlated SmB6 as evidence of the topological Kondo insulator

The concept of a topological Kondo insulator (TKI) has been brought forward as a new class of topological insulators in which non-trivial surface states reside in the bulk Kondo band gap at low temperature due to the strong spin-orbit coupling [1-3]. In contrast to other three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (e.g. Bi2Se3), a TKI is truly insulating in the bulk [4]. Furthermore, strong electron correlations are present in the system, which may interact with the novel topological phase. Applying spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SARPES) to the Kondo insulator SmB6, a promising TKI candidate, we reveal that the surface states of SmB6 are spin polarized, and the spin is locked to the crystal momentum. Counter-propagating states (i.e. at k and -k) have opposite spin polarizations protected by time-reversal symmetry. Together with the odd number of Fermi surfaces of surface states between the 4 time-reversal invariant momenta in the surface Brillouin zone [5], these findings prove, for the first time, that SmB6 can host non-trivial topological surface states in a full insulating gap in the bulk stemming from the Kondo effect. Hence our experimental results establish that SmB6 is the first realization of a 3D TKI. It can also serve as an ideal platform for the systematic study of the interplay between novel topological quantum states with emergent effects and competing order induced by strongly correlated electrons.

Exotic Kondo crossover in a wide temperature region in the topological Kondo insulator SmB6 revealed by high-resolution ARPES

Temperature dependence of the electronic structure of SmB6 is studied by high-resolution ARPES down to 1 K. We demonstrate that there is no essential difference for the dispersions of the surface states below and above the resistivity saturating anomaly (~ 3.5 K). Quantitative analyses of the surface states indicate that the quasi-particle scattering rate increases linearly as a function of temperature and binding energy, which differs from Fermi-Liquid behavior. Most intriguingly, we observe that the hybridization between the d and f states builds gradually over a wide temperature region (30 K < T < 110 K). The surface states appear when the hybridization starts to develop. Our detailed temperature-dependence results give a complete interpretation of the exotic resistivity result of SmB6, as well as the discrepancies among experimental results concerning the temperature regions in which the topological surface states emerge and the Kondo gap opens, and give new insights into the exotic Kondo crossover and its relationship with the topological surface states in the topological Kondo insulator SmB6.

Low-temperature magnetic fluctuations in the Kondo insulator SmB6

We present the results of a systematic investigation of the magnetic properties of the three-dimensional Kondo topological insulator SmB6 using magnetization and muon-spin relaxation/rotation (muSR) measurements. The muSR measurements exhibit magnetic field fluctuations in SmB6 below 15 K due to electronic moments present in the system. However, no evidence for magnetic ordering is found down to 19 mK. The observed magnetism in SmB6 is homogeneous in nature throughout the full volume of the sample. Bulk magnetization measurements on the same sample show consistent behavior. The agreement between muSR, magnetization, and NMR results strongly indicate the appearance of intrinsic bulk magnetic in-gap states associated with fluctuating magnetic fields in SmB6 at low temperature.

Magnetic field distribution and characteristic fields of the vortex lattice for a clean superconducting niobium sample in an external field applied along a three-fold axis

The field distribution in the vortex lattice of a pure niobium single crystal with an external field applied along a three-fold axis has been investigated by the transverse-field muon-spin-rotation (TF-$μ$SR) technique over a wide range of temperatures and fields. The experimental data have been analyzed with the Delrieu's solution for the form factor supplemented by phenomenological formulas for the parameters. This has enabled us to experimentally establish the temperatures and fields for the Delrieu's, Ginzburg-Landau's, and Klein's regions of the vortex lattice. Using the numerical solution of the quasiclassical Eilenberger's equation the experimental results have been reasonably understood. They should apply to all clean BCS superconductors. The analytical Delrieu's model supplemented by phenomenological formulas for its parameters is found to be reliable for analyzing TF-$μ$SR experimental data for a substantial part of the mixed phase. The Abrikosov's limit is contained in it.

SrPt$_3$P: two-band single-gap superconductor

The magnetic penetration depth ($λ$) as a function of applied magnetic field and temperature in SrPt$_3$P($T_c\simeq8.4$ K) was studied by means of muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR). The dependence of $λ^{-2}$ on temperature suggests the existence of a single $s-$wave energy gap with the zero-temperature value $Δ=1.58(2)$ meV. At the same time $λ$ was found to be strongly field dependent which is the characteristic feature of the nodal gap and/or multi-gap systems. The multi-gap nature of the superconduicting state is further confirmed by observation of an upward curvature of the upper critical field. This apparent contradiction would be resolved with SrPt$_3$P being a two-band superconductor with equal gaps but different coherence lengths within the two Fermi surface sheets.

Superconducting and magnetic properties of Sr3Ir4Sn13

Magnetization and muon spin relaxation or rotation (muSR) measurements have been performed to study the superconducting and magnetic properties of Sr3Ir4Sn13. From magnetization measurements the lower and upper critical fields of Sr3Ir4Sn13 are found to be 81(1) Oe and 14.4(2) kOe, respectively. Zero-field muSR data show no sign of any magnetic ordering or weak magnetism in Sr3Ir4Sn13. Transverse-field muSR measurements in the vortex state provided the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth. The dependence of penetration depth with temperature is consistent with the existence of single s-wave energy gap in the superconducting state of Sr3Ir4Sn13 with a gap value of 0.82(2) meV at absolute zero temperature. The magnetic penetration depth at zero temperature is 291(3) nm. The gap to Tc ratio is 2.1(1), indicates that Sr3Ir4Sn13 should be considered as a strong-coupling superconductor.

Anomaly in the electronic structure of a BCS superconductor, ZrB(12)

We investigate the electronic structure of a complex conventional superconductor, ZrB12 employing high resolution photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio band structure calculations. The experimental valence band spectra could be described reasonably well within the local density approximation. Energy bands close to the Fermi level possess t_(2g) symmetry and the Fermi level is found to be in the proximity of quantum fluctuation regime. The spectral lineshape in the high resolution spectra is complex exhibiting signature of a deviation from Fermi liquid behavior. A dip at the Fermi level emerges above the superconducting transition temperature that gradually grows with the decrease in temperature. The spectral simulation of the dip and spectral lineshape based on a phenomenological self energy suggests a finite electron pair lifetime and a pseudogap above the superconducting transition temperature.

Evidence for Time-Reversal-Symmetry-Broken Superconductivity in Locally Noncentrosymmetric SrPtAs

We report the magnetic and superconducting properties of locally noncentrosymmetric SrPtAs obtained by muon-spin-rotation/relaxation (muSR) measurements. Zero-field muSR reveals the occurrence of small spontaneous static magnetic fields with the onset of superconductivity. This finding suggests that the superconducting state of SrPtAs breaks time-reversal symmetry. The superfluid density as determined by transverse field muSR is nearly flat approaching T = 0 K proving the absence of extended nodes in the gap function. By symmetry, several superconducting states supporting time-reversal symmetry breaking in SrPtAs are allowed. Out of these, a dominantly d + id (chiral d-wave) order parameter is most consistent with our experimental data.

Low superfluid density and possible multi-gap superconductivity in BiS2-based layered superconductor Bi4O4S3

The magnetic penetration depth as a function of temperature in Bi4O4S3 was studied by muon-spin-spectroscopy measurements. The superfluid density of Bi4O4S3 is found to be very low. The dependence of penetration depth on temperature possibly suggests the existence of two s-wave type energy gaps with the zero-temperature values of 0.93(3) and 0.09(4) meV. The upturn in the temperature dependence of the upper critical field close to Tc further supports multi-gap superconductivity in Bi4O4S3. The presence of two superconducting energy gaps is consistent with theoretical and other experimental studies. However, a single-gap s-wave model fit with a gap of 0.88(2) meV can not be ruled out completely. The value of penetration depth at T = 0 K is estimated to be of 861(17) nm, one of the largest of all known layered superconductors, reflecting a very low superfluid density.

Multigap superconductivity in locally non-centrosymmetric SrPtAs: An As nuclear quadrupole resonance investigation

We report detailed $^{75}$As-NQR investigations of the locally non-centrosymmetric superconductor SrPtAs. The spin-lattice relaxation studies prove weakly coupled multi-gap superconductivity. The Hebel-Slichter peak, a hallmark of conventional superconductivity, is strongly suppressed, which points to an unconventional superconducting state. The observed behavior excludes a superconducting order parameter with line nodes and is consistent with proposed $f$-wave and chiral $d$-wave order parameters.

Superconductivity in a new layered bismuth oxyselenide: LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2

We report superconductivity in a new layered bismuth oxyselenide LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 with the ZrCuSiAs-type structure composed of alternating superconducting BiSe2 and blocking LaO layers. The superconducting transition temperature is TC = 2.6K, as revealed from DC magnetization, resistivity and muon spin rotation (muSR) experiments. DC magnetization measurements indicate a superconducting volume fraction of approximately 80%, which is at least twice higher in comparison to that found in corresponding sulphide LaO0.5F0.5BiS2. Importantly, the bulk character of superconductivity in LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 was confirmed by muSR.

Surface and Bulk Electronic Structure of the Strongly Correlated System SmB$_{6}$ and Implications for a Topological Kondo Insulator

Recent theoretical calculations and experimental results suggest that the strongly correlated material SmB$_{6}$ may be a realization of a topological Kondo insulator. We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study on SmB$_{6}$ in order to elucidate elements of the electronic structure relevant to the possible occurrence of a topological Kondo insulator state. The obtained electronic structure in the whole three-dimensional momentum space reveals one electron-like 5d bulk band centred at the X point of the bulk Brillouin zone that is hybridized with strongly correlated f electrons, as well as the opening of a Kondo bandgap ($Δ_B$ $\sim$ 20 meV) at low temperature. In addition, we observe electron-like bands forming three Fermi surfaces at the center $\barΓ$ point and boundary $\bar{X}$ point of the surface Brillouin zone. These bands are not expected from calculations of the bulk electronic structure, and their observed dispersion characteristics are consistent with surface states. Our results suggest that the unusual low-temperature transport behavior of SmB$_{6}$ is likely to be related to the pronounced surface states sitting inside the band hybridisation gap and/or the presence of a topological Kondo insulating state.

Surface bulk differences in a conventional superconductor, ZrB(12)

We studied the electronic structure of a conventional superconductor, ZrB(12) using high resolution x-photoemission spectroscopy and single crystalline samples. Experimental results with different bulk sensitivity reveals boron deficiency and different valence states of Zr at the surface relative to the bulk. Signature of a satellite features is observed in the Zr core level spectra corresponding to the bulk of the material suggesting importance of electron correlation among the conduction electrons in the bulk while the surface appears to be uncorrelated. These results provide an insight in fabricating devices based on such superconductors.

Comparative study of the centrosymmetric and non-centrosymmetric superconducting phases of Re3W using muon-spin spectroscopy and heat capacity measurements

We compare the low-temperature electronic properties of the centrosymmetric (CS) and non-centrosymmetric (NCS) phases of Re3W using muon-spin spectroscopy and heat capacity measurements. The zero-field muSR results indicate that time-reversal symmetry is preserved for both structures of Re3W. Transverse-field muon spin rotation has been used to study the temperature dependence of the penetration depth lambda(T) in the mixed state. For both phases of Re3W, lambda(T) can be explained using a single-gap s-wave BCS model. The magnetic penetration depth at zero temperature, lambda(0), is 164(7) and 418(6) nm for the centrosymmetric and the non-centrosymmetric phases of Re3W respectively. Low-temperature specific heat data also provide evidence for an s-wave gap-symmetry for the two phases of Re3W. Both the muSR and heat capacity data show that the CS material has a higher Tc and a larger superconducting gap Delta(0) at 0 K than the NCS compound. The ratio Delta(0)/kBTc indicates that both phases of Re3W should be considered as strong-coupling superconductors.

Magnetic phase separation and superfluid density measurements in alkali metal-organic solvent intercalated iron selenide superconductor Lix(C5H5N)yFe2-zSe2

We report the low-temperature electronic and magnetic properties of the alkali metal-organic solvent intercalated iron selenide superconductor Lix(C5H5N)yFe2-zSe using muon-spin-spectroscopy measurements. The zero-field \muSR results indicate that nearly half of the sample is magnetically ordered and there is a spatial phase separation between the superconducting and the magnetic fraction. The transverse-field \muSR results show that the temperature dependence of the penetration depth λ(T) in the mixed state of Lix(C5H5N)yFe2-zSe can be explained using a two-gap s+s-wave model with gap values of 6.82(92) and 0.93(7) meV. This implies that the symmetry of the superconducting gap in this system remains unaltered to the parent compound FeSe even after the intercalation with the molecular spacer layer. We obtain λ(0) = 485(21) nm at T = 0 K.

Multiscale QM/MM Molecular Dynamics Study on the First Steps of Guanine-Damage by Free Hydroxyl Radicals in Solution

Understanding the damage of DNA bases from hydrogen abstraction by free OH radicals is of particular importance to reveal the effect of hydroxyl radicals produced by the secondary effect of radiation. Previous studies address the problem with truncated DNA bases as ab-initio quantum simulation required to study such electronic spin dependent processes are computationally expensive. Here, for the first time, we employ a multiscale and hybrid Quantum-Mechanical-Molecular-Mechanical simulation to study the interaction of OH radicals with guanine-deoxyribose-phosphate DNA molecular unit in the presence of water where all the water molecules and the deoxyribose-phosphate fragment are treated with the simplistic classical Molecular-Mechanical scheme. Our result illustrates that the presence of water strongly alters the hydrogen-abstraction reaction as the hydrogen bonding of OH radicals with water restricts the relative orientation of the OH-radicals with respective to the the DNA base (here guanine). This results in an angular anisotropy in the chemical pathway and a lower efficiency in the hydrogen abstraction mechanisms than previously anticipated for identical system in vacuum. The method can easily be extended to single and double stranded DNA without any appreciable computational cost as these molecular units can be treated in the classical subsystem as has been demonstrated here.

First-Order Reorientation of the Flux-Line Lattice in CaAlSi

The flux line lattice in CaAlSi has been studied by small angle neutron scattering. A well defined hexagonal flux line lattice is seen just above Hc1 in an applied field of only 54 Oe. A 30 degree reorientation of this vortex lattice has been observed in a very low field of 200 Oe. This reorientation transition appears to be of first-order and could be explained by non-local effects. The magnetic field dependence of the form factor is well described by a single penetration depth of 1496(1) angstroms and a single coherence length of 307(1) angstroms at 2 K. At 1.5 K the penetration depth anisotropy is 2.7(1) with the field applied perpendicular to the c axis and agrees with the coherence length anisotropy determined from critical field measurements.

Structure and superconductivity of two different phases of Re3W

Two superconducting phases of Re3W have been found with different physical properties. One phase crystallizes in a non-centrosymmetric cubic (alpha-Mn) structure and has a superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of 7.8 K. The other phase has a hexagonal centrosymmetric structure and is superconducting with a Tc of 9.4 K. Switching between the two phases is possible by annealing the sample or remelting it. The properties of both phases of Re3W have been characterized by powder neutron diffraction, magnetization, and resistivity measurements. The temperature dependence of the lower and the upper critical fields have been measured for both phases. These are used to determine the penetration depths and the coherence lengths for these systems.

Two-gap superconductivity in Lu$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$: a transverse-field muon spin rotation study

The superconducting properties of Lu2Fe3Si5 with Tc = 6.1 K have been investigated using low-temperature transverse-field muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and specific heat measurements. The magnetic penetration depth at zero temperature is 353(1) nm. However, the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth is consistent with a two gap s+s-wave model. Low-temperature specific heat measurements on the same sample also show evidence of two distinct superconducting gaps.

Sensing Models and Its Impact on Network Coverage in Wireless Sensor Network

Network coverage of wireless sensor network (WSN) means how well an area of interest is being monitored by the deployed network. It depends mainly on sensing model of nodes. In this paper, we present three types of sensing models viz. Boolean sensing model, shadow-fading sensing model and Elfes sensing model. We investigate the impact of sensing models on network coverage. We also investigate network coverage based on Poisson node distribution. A comparative study between regular and random node placement has also been presented in this paper. This study will be useful for coverage analysis of WSN.

Scattering of positronium by H, He, Ne, and Ar

The low-energy scattering of ortho positronium (Ps) by H, He, Ne, and Ar atoms has been investigated in the coupled-channel framework by using a recently proposed time-reversal-symmetric nonlocal electron-exchange model potential with a single parameter $C$. For H and He we use a three-Ps-state coupled-channel model and for Ar and Ne we use a static-exchange model. The sensitivity of the results is studied with respect to the parameter $C$. Present low-energy cross sections for He, Ne and Ar are in good agreement with experiment.

Electron exchange model potential: Application to positronium-helium scattering

The formulation of a suitable nonlocal model potential for electron exchange is presented, checked with electron-hydrogen and electron-helium scattering, and applied to the study of elastic and inelastic scattering and ionization of ortho positronium (Ps) by helium. The elastic scattering and the $n = 2$ excitations of Ps are investigated using a three-Ps-state close-coupling approximation. The higher ($n\ge 3$) excitations and ionization of Ps atom are treated in the framework of Born approximation with present exchange. Calculations are reported of phase shifts, and elastic, Ps-excitation, and total cross sections. The present target elastic total cross section agrees well with experimental results at thermal to medium energies.
