Valence bond glass state in the 4$d^1$ fcc antiferromagnet Ba$_2$LuMoO$_6$

$B$-site ordered 4$d^1$ and 5$d^1$ double perovskites have a number of potential novel ground states including multipolar order, quantum spin liquids and valence bond glass states. These arise from the complex interactions of spin-orbital entangled $J_{eff}$ = 3/2 pseudospins on the geometrically frustrated fcc lattice. The 4$d^1$ Mo$^{5+}$ perovskite Ba$_2$YMoO$_6$ has been suggested to have a valence bond glass ground state. Here we report on the low temperature properties of powder samples of isostructural Ba$_2$LuMoO$_6$: the only other known cubic 4$d^1$ perovskite with one magnetic cation. Our muon spectroscopy experiments show that magnetism in this material remains dynamic down to 60 mK without any spin freezing or magnetic order. A singlet-triplet excitation with a gap of $Δ$ = 28 meV is observed in inelastic neutron scattering. These results are interpreted as a disordered valence bond glass ground state similar to Ba$_2$YMoO$_6$. Our results highlight the differences of the 4$d^1$ double perovskites in comparison to cubic 5$d^1$ analogues, which have both magnetic and multipolar order.

Magnetic order and disorder in a quasi-two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet with randomized exchange

We present an investigation of the effect of randomizing exchange strengths in the $S=1/2$ square lattice quasi-two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet (QuinH)$_2$Cu(Cl$_{x}$Br$_{1-x}$)$_{4}\cdot$2H$_2$O (QuinH$=$Quinolinium, C$_9$H$_8$N$^+$), with $0\leq x \leq 1$. Pulsed-field magnetization measurements allow us to estimate an effective in-plane exchange strength $J$ in a regime where exchange fosters short-range order, while the temperature $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ at which long range order (LRO) occurs is found using muon-spin relaxation, allowing us to construct a phase diagram for the series. We evaluate the effectiveness of disorder in suppressing $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ and the ordered moment size and find an extended disordered phase in the region $0.4 \lesssim x \lesssim 0.8$ where no magnetic order occurs, driven by quantum effects of the exchange randomness.

Muon sites in PbF2 and YF3: decohering environments and the role of anion Frenkel defects

Muons implanted into ionic fluorides often lead to a so-called F-mu-F state, in which the time evolution of the muon spin contains information about the geometry and nature of the muon site. Nuclei more distant from the muon than the two nearest-neighbor fluorine ions result in decoherence of the F-mu-F system and this can yield additional quantitative information about the state of the muon. We demonstrate how this can be applied to the determination of muon sites within the ionic fluorides alpha-PbF2 and YF3 which contain fluoride ions in different crystallographic environments. Our results can be used to distinguish between different crystal phases and reveal the presence of anion Frenkel defects in alpha-PbF2.

Commensurate lattice distortion in the layered titanium oxypnictides Na$_{2}$Ti$_{2}Pn_{2}$O ($Pn =$ As, Sb) determined by X-ray diffraction

We report single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements on Na$_2$Ti$_{2}Pn_{2}$O ($Pn$ = As, Sb) which reveal a charge superstructure that appears below the density wave transitions previously observed in bulk data. From symmetry-constrained structure refinements we establish that the associated distortion mode can be described by two propagation vectors, ${\bf q}_{1} = (1/2, 0, l)$ and ${\bf q}_{2} = (0, 1/2, l)$, with $l=0$ (Sb) or $l = 1/2$ (As), and primarily involves in-plane displacements of the Ti atoms perpendicular to the Ti--O bonds. The results provide direct evidence for phonon-assisted charge density wave order in Na$_2$Ti$_{2}Pn_{2}$O and identify a proximate ordered phase that could compete with superconductivity in doped BaTi$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$O.

Novel magnetism on a honeycomb lattice in a-RuCl3 studied by muon spin rotation

Muon spin rotation measurements have been performed on a powder sample of a-RuCl3, a layered material which previously has been proposed to be a quantum magnet on a honeycomb lattice close to a quantum spin liquid ground state. Our data reveal two distinct phase transitions at 11 K and 14 K which we interpret as originating from the onset of three-dimensional order and in-plane magnetic order, respectively. We identify, with the help of density functional theory calculations, likely muon stopping sites and combine these with dipolar field calculations to show that the two measured muon rotation frequencies are consistent with two inequivalent muon sites within a zig-zag antiferromagnetic structure proposed previously.

Structural and magnetic properties of the 5$d^2$ double perovskites Sr$_2 B$ReO$_6$ ($B$ $=$ Y, In)

We have performed magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron powder diffraction, and muon spin relaxation experiments to investigate the magnetic ground states of the 5$d^2$ double perovskites Sr$_2$YReO$_6$ and Sr$_2$InReO$_6$. We find that Sr$_2$YReO$_6$ is a spin glass, while Sr$_2$InReO$_6$ hosts a non-magnetic singlet state. By making detailed comparisons with other 5$d^2$ double perovskites, we argue that a delicate interplay between spin-orbit coupling, non-cubic crystal fields, and exchange interactions plays a key role in the great variation of magnetic ground states observed for this family of materials.

Spin liquid ground state in the frustrated J1-J2 zigzag chain system BaTb2O4

We have investigated polycrystalline samples of the zigzag chain system BaTb$_2$O$_4$ with a combination of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron powder diffraction, and muon spin relaxation measurements. Despite the onset of Tb$^{3+}$ short-range antiferromagnetic correlations at $|θ_{CW}|$ $=$ 18.5 K and a very large effective moment, our combined measurements indicate that BaTb$_2$O$_4$ remains paramagnetic down to 0.095 K. The magnetic properties of this material show striking similarities to the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, and therefore we propose that BaTb$_2$O$_4$ is a new large moment spin liquid candidate.

Spin waves and revised crystal structure of honeycomb iridate Na2IrO3

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Na2IrO3, a candidate for the Kitaev spin model on the honeycomb lattice. We observe spin-wave excitations below 5 meV with a dispersion that can be accounted for by including substantial further-neighbor exchanges that stabilize zig-zag magnetic order. The onset of long-range magnetic order below 15.3 K is confirmed via the observation of oscillations in zero-field muon-spin rotation experiments. Combining single-crystal diffraction and density functional calculations we propose a revised crystal structure model with significant departures from the ideal 90 deg Ir-O-Ir bonds required for dominant Kitaev exchange.

The magnetic ground state of two isostructual polymeric quantum magnets, [Cu(HF$_{2}$)(pyrazine)$_{2}$]SbF$_{6}$ and [Co(HF$_{2}$)(pyrazine)$_{2}$]SbF$_{6}$, investigated with neutron powder diffraction

The magnetic ground state of two isostructural coordination polymers (i) the quasi two-dimensional S = 1/2 square-lattice antiferromagnet [Cu(HF$_{2}$)(pyrazine)$_{2}$]SbF$_{6}$; and (ii) a new compound [Co(HF$_{2}$)(pyrazine)$_{2}$]SbF$_{6}$, were examined with neutron powder diffraction measurements. We find the ordered moments of the Heisenberg S = 1/2 Cu(II) ions in [Cu(HF$_{2}$)(pyrazine)$_{2}$]SbF$_{6}$ are 0.6(1)$μ_{B}$, whilst the ordered moments for the Co(II) ions in [Co(HF$_{2}$)(pyrazine)$_{2}$]SbF$_{6}$ are 3.02(6)$μ_{B}$. For Cu(II), this reduced moment indicates the presence of quantum fluctuations below the ordering temperature. We show from heat capacity and electron spin resonance measurements, that due to the crystal electric field splitting of the S = 3/2 Co(II) ions in [Co(HF$_{2}$)(pyrazine)$_{2}$]SbF$_{6}$, this isostructual polymer also behaves as an effective spin-half magnet at low temperatures. The Co moments in [Co(HF$_{2}$)(pyrazine)$_{2}$]SbF$_{6}$ show strong easy-axis anisotropy, neutron diffraction data which do not support the presence of quantum fluctuations in the ground state and heat capacity data which are consistent with 2D or close to 3D spatial exchange anisotropy.

Evidence for magnetic clusters in Ni$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$ close to the quantum critical concentration

The d-metal alloy Ni$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$ undergoes a quantum phase transition from a ferromagnetic ground state to a paramagnetic ground state as the vanadium concentration $x$ is increased. We present magnetization, ac-susceptibility and muon-spin relaxation data at several vanadium concentrations near the critical concentration $x_c \approx11.6%$ at which the onset of ferromagnetic order is suppressed to zero temperature. Below $x_c$, the muon data reveal a broad magnetic field distribution indicative of long-range ordered ferromagnetic state with spatial disorder. We show evidence of magnetic clusters in the ferromagnetic phase and close to the phase boundary in this disordered itinerant system as an important generic ingredient of a disordered quantum phase transition. In contrast, the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility above $x_c$ is best described in terms of a magnetic quantum Griffiths phase with a power-law distribution of fluctuation rates of dynamic magnetic clusters. At the lowest temperatures, the onset of a short-range ordered cluster-glass phase is recognized by an increase in the muon depolarization in transverse fields and maxima in ac-susceptibility.

Exotic magnetism on the quasi-FCC lattices of the $d^3$ double perovskites La$_2$NaB$'$O$_6$ (B$'$ $=$ Ru, Os)

We find evidence for long-range and short-range ($ζ$ $=$ 70 Å~at 4 K) incommensurate magnetic order on the quasi-face-centered-cubic (FCC) lattices of the monoclinic double perovskites La$_2$NaRuO$_6$ and La$_2$NaOsO$_6$ respectively. Incommensurate magnetic order on the FCC lattice has not been predicted by mean field theory, but may arise via a delicate balance of inequivalent nearest neighbour and next nearest neighbour exchange interactions. In the Ru system with long-range order, inelastic neutron scattering also reveals a spin gap $Δ$ $\sim$ 2.75 meV. Magnetic anisotropy is generally minimized in the more familiar octahedrally-coordinated $3d^3$ systems, so the large gap observed for La$_2$NaRuO$_6$ may result from the significantly enhanced value of spin-orbit coupling in this $4d^3$ material.

Probing the magnetic phases in the Ni-V alloy close to the disordered ferromagnetic quantum critical point with muSR

Zero (ZF) and longitudinal field (LF) muon spin relaxation data of the {\it d}-metal alloy Ni$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$ are presented at several vanadium concentrations $x$ below and above the critical $x_c \approx 11$% where long-range ferromagnetic (FM) order is suppressed. The clear single precession frequency observed for Ni, as expected for a homogeneous FM, changes to rather damped oscillation with small V substitution at $x=4$%, confirming magnetic inhomogeneities caused by the less magnetic V environments in the magnetic Ni matrix. Furthermore, local fields and spatial field distributions can be estimated to characterize different inhomogeneous regimes developing with $x$ in the FM phase of Ni$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$. In the regime of $x=7-10$% a Kubo Toyabe function well describes the low temperature ZF and LF asymmetry data supporting a static Gaussian field distribution. Closer to the quantum critical concentration a single scale static Kubo Toyabe function with one field distribution is not sufficient to describe the muon relaxation. These data indicate that further changes in spatial distributions and dynamics are evolving as expected within the critical regime of a disordered quantum critical point.

Controlling magnetic order and quantum disorder in one- and zero-dimensional molecule-based magnets

We investigate the structural and magnetic properties of two molecule-based magnets synthesized from the same starting components. Their different structural motifs promote contrasting exchange pathways and consequently lead to markedly different magnetic ground states. Through examination of their structural and magnetic properties we show that [Cu(pyz)(H$_{2}$O)(gly)$_{2}$](ClO$_{4}$)$_{2}$ may be considered a quasi-one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet while the related compound [Cu(pyz)(gly)](ClO$_{4}$), which is formed from dimers of antiferromagnetically interacting Cu$^{2+}$ spins, remains disordered down to at least 0.03 K in zero field, but shows a field-temperature phase diagram reminiscent of that seen in materials showing a Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons.

Evidence for Time-Reversal-Symmetry-Broken Superconductivity in Locally Noncentrosymmetric SrPtAs

We report the magnetic and superconducting properties of locally noncentrosymmetric SrPtAs obtained by muon-spin-rotation/relaxation (muSR) measurements. Zero-field muSR reveals the occurrence of small spontaneous static magnetic fields with the onset of superconductivity. This finding suggests that the superconducting state of SrPtAs breaks time-reversal symmetry. The superfluid density as determined by transverse field muSR is nearly flat approaching T = 0 K proving the absence of extended nodes in the gap function. By symmetry, several superconducting states supporting time-reversal symmetry breaking in SrPtAs are allowed. Out of these, a dominantly d + id (chiral d-wave) order parameter is most consistent with our experimental data.

Local magnetism and spin correlations in the geometrically frustrated cluster magnet LiZn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$

LiZn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ has been proposed to contain $S~=~1/2$ Mo$_3$O$_{13}$ magnetic clusters arranged on a triangular lattice with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions. Here, microwave and terahertz electron spin resonance (ESR), $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and muon spin rotation ($μ\textrm{SR}$) spectroscopies are used to characterize the local magnetic properties of LiZn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$. These results show the magnetism in LiZn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ arises from a single isotropic $S~=~1/2$ electron per cluster and that there is no static long-range magnetic ordering down to $T~=~0.07\,\textrm{K}$. Further, there is evidence of gapless spin excitations with spin fluctuations slowing down as the temperature is lowered. These data indicate strong spin correlations which, together with previous data, suggest a low-temperature resonating valence-bond state in LiZn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$.

Magnetic fluctuations and spin freezing in nonsuperconducting LiFeAs derivatives

We present detailed magnetometry and muon-spin rotation data on polycrystalline samples of overdoped, non-superconducting LiFe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$As ($x = 0.1,\,0.2$) and Li$_{1-y}$Fe$_{1+y}$As ($0\leq y\leq 0.04$) as well as superconducting LiFeAs. While LiFe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$As exhibits weak antiferromagnetic fluctuations down to $1.5\,{\rm K}$, Li$_{1-y}$Fe$_{1+y}$As samples, which have a much smaller deviation from the $1:1:1$ stoichiometry, show a crossover from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic fluctuations on cooling and a freezing of dynamically fluctuating moments at low temperatures. We do not find any signatures of time-reversal symmetry breaking in stoichiometric LiFeAs that would support recent predictions of triplet pairing.

Magnetic transition and spin dynamics in the triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet $α$-KCrO$_{2}$

We present the results of muon-spin relaxation measurements on the triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet $α$-KCrO$_{2}$. We observe sharp changes in behaviour at an ordering temperature of $T_{\mathrm{c}}=23$ K, with an additional broad feature in the muon-spin relaxation rate evident at T=13 K, both of which correspond to features in the magnetic contribution to the heat capacity. This behaviour is distinct from both the Li- and Na- containing members of the series. These data may be qualitatively described with the established theoretical predictions for the underlying spin system.

Weak magnetic transitions in pyrochlore Bi2Ir2O7

Muon spin relaxation measurements on Bi2Ir2O7 show that it undergoes a bulk magnetic transition at 1.84(3) K. This is accompanied by increases in the muon spin relaxation rate and the amplitude of the non-relaxing part of the signal. The magnetic field experienced by muons is estimated to be 0.7 mT at low-temperature, around two orders of magnitude smaller than that in other pyrochlore iridates. These results suggest that the low-temperature state represents ordering of exceptionally small magnetic moments with persistent weak dynamics. The relaxation rate increases further below 0.23(4) K, coincident with a growth in the specific heat, suggesting the existence of a second low-temperature magnetic transition.

Persistent dynamics in the S=1/2 quasi-one-dimensional chain compound Rb4Cu(MoO4)3 probed with muon-spin relaxation

We report the results of muon-spin relaxation measurements on the low-dimensional antiferromagnet Rb4Cu(MoO4)3. No long-range magnetic order is observed down to 50 mK implying a ratio T_N/J<0.005 (where J is the principal exchange strength along the spin chains) and an effective ratio of interchain to intrachain exchange of |J_perp/J|<2 x 10^-3, making the material an excellent realization of a one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We probe the persistent spin excitations at low temperatures and find that ballistic spin transport dominates the excitations detected below 0.3 K.

Dynamic fields in the partial magnetization plateau of Ca3Co2O6

Fluctuation dynamics in magnetization plateaux are a relatively poorly explored area in frustrated magnetism. Here we use muon spin relaxation to determine the fluctuation timescale and associated field distribution width in the partial magnetization plateau of Ca3Co2O6. The muon spin relaxation rate has a simple and characteristic field dependence which we model and by fitting to the data at 15 K extract a fluctuation timescale tau = 880(30) ps and a field distribution width Delta = 40.6(3) mT. Comparison with previous results on Ca3Co2O6 suggests that this fluctuation timescale can be associated with short-range, slowly fluctuating magnetic order.

Measurement of the internal magnetic field in the correlated iridates Ca$_4$IrO$_6$, Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$, Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

Oxides containing iridium ions display a range of magnetic and conducting properties that depend on the delicate balance between interactions and are controlled, at least in part, by the details of the crystal architecture. We have used muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR) to study the local field in four iridium oxides, Ca$_4$IrO$_6$, Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$, Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, which show contrasting behavior. Our $μ$SR data on Ca$_4$IrO$_6$ and Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$ are consistent with conventional antiferromagnetism where quasistatic magnetic order develops below $T_{\rm N}=13.85(6)$ K and 7.84(7) K respectively. A lower internal field is observed for Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$, as compared to Ca$_4$IrO$_6$ reflecting the presence of both Ir$^{4+}$ and Ir$^{5+}$ ions, resulting in a more magnetically dilute structure. Muon precession is only observed over a restricted range of temperature in Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, while the Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ displays more complex behavior, with the $μ$SR signal containing a single, well-resolved precession signal below $T_{\rm N}=230$\,K, which splits into two precession signals at low temperature following a reorientation of the spins in the ordered state.

Observation of a level crossing in a molecular nanomagnet using implanted muons

We have observed an electronic energy level crossing in a molecular nanomagnet (MNM) using muon-spin relaxation. This effect, not observed previously despite several muon studies of MNM systems, provides further evidence that the spin relaxation of the implanted muon is sensistive to the dynamics of the electronic spin. Our measurements on a broken ring MNM [H_{2}N^{t}Bu^{is}Pr][Cr_{8}CdF_{9}(O_{2}CC(CH_{3})_{3})_{18}] (hereafter Cr_{8}Cd), which contains eight Cr ions, show clear evidence for the S=0 to S=1 transition that takes place at B_{c}=2.3 T. The crossing is observed as a resonance-like dip in the average positron asymmetry and also in the muon-spin relaxation rate, which shows a sharp increase in magnitude at the transition and a peak centred within the S=1 regime.

Partial magnetization plateau emerging from a quantum spin ice state in Tb2Ti2O7

The quantum spin ice model applied to Tb2Ti2O7 predicts that magnetic fields applied along the [111] axis will induce a partial magnetization plateau [H. R. Molavian and M. J. P. Gingras, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 21, 172201 (2009)]. We test this hypothesis using ac magnetic susceptibility and muon-spin relaxation measurements, finding features at 15 and 65 mT agreeing with the predicted boundaries of the magnetization plateau. This suggests that Tb2Ti2O7 is well described by a quantum spin ice model with an effective exchange constant of Jeff = 0.17(1) K.

Probing magnetic order in LiMPO4, M = Ni, Co, Fe and lithium diffusion in LixFePO4

Muon spin relaxation measurements are reported on three members of the LixMPO4 series. The magnetic properties of stoichiometric samples with M = Ni, Co, Fe, were investigated at low-temperature. In LiNiPO4 we observe different forms of the muon decay asymmetry in the commensurate and incommensurate antiferromagnetic phases, accompanied by a change in the temperature dependence of the muon oscillation frequency. In LiCoPO4 the form of the muon decay asymmetry indicates that the correlation between layers decreases as the Neel temperature is approached from below. LiFePO4 shows more conventional behaviour, typical for an antiferromagnet. Measurements on LixFePO4 with x = 0.8, 0.9, and 1 show evidence for lithium diffusion below ~250 K and muon diffusion dominating the form of the relaxation at higher temperature. The thermally activated form of the observed hopping rate suggests an activation barrier for lithium diffusion of ~ 100 meV and a diffusion constant of D_Li ~ 10^-10 - 10^-9 cm2/s at room temperature.

The gradual destruction of magnetism in the superconducting family NaFe(1-x)CoxAs

The interplay and coexistence of superconducting, magnetic and structural order parameters in NaFe{1-x}Co{x}As has been studied using SQUID magnetometry, muon-spin rotation and synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction. Substituting Fe by Co weakens the ordered magnetic state through both a suppression of T_N and a reduction in the size of the ordered moment. Upon further substitution of Fe by Co the high sensitivity of the muon as a local magnetic probe reveals a magnetically disordered phase, in which the size of the moment continues to decrease and falls to zero around the same point at which the magnetically-driven structural distortion is no longer resolvable. Both magnetism and the structural distortion are weakened as the robust superconducting state is established.

Muon-spin relaxation and heat capacity measurements on the magnetoelectric and multiferroic pyroxenes LiFeSi2O6 and NaFeSi2O6

The results of muon-spin relaxation and heat capacity measurements on two pyroxene compounds LiFeSi2O6 and NaFeSi2O6 demonstrate that despite their underlying structural similarity the magnetic ordering is considerably different. In LiFeSi2O6 a single muon precession frequency is observed below TN, consistent with a single peak at TN in the heat capacity and a commensurate magnetic structure. In applied magnetic fields the heat capacity peak splits in two. In contrast, for natural NaFeSi2O6, where multiferroicity has been observed in zero-magnetic-field, a rapid Gaussian depolarization is observed showing that the magnetic structure is more complex. Synthetic NaFeSi2O6 shows a single muon precession frequency but with a far larger damping rate than in the lithium compound. Heat capacity measurements reproduce the phase diagrams previously derived from other techniques and demonstrate that the magnetic entropy is mostly associated with the build up of correlations in the quasi-one-dimensional Fe3+ chains.

The phase transition in the localized ferromagnet EuO probed by muSR

We report results of muon spin rotation measurements performed on the ferromagnetic semiconductor EuO, which is one of the best approximations to a localized ferromagnet. We argue that implanted muons are sensitive to the internal field primarily through a combination of hyperfine and Lorentz fields. The temperature dependences of the internal field and the relaxation rate have been measured and are compared with previous theoretical predictions.

2D XY Behavior observed in quasi-2D quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets

The magnetic properties of a new family of molecular-based quasi-two dimension $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnets are reported. Three compounds, ($Cu(pz)_2(ClO_4)_2$, $Cu(pz)_2(BF_4)_2$, and $[Cu(pz)_2(NO_3)](PF_6)$) contain similar planes of Cu$^{2+}$ ions linked into magnetically square lattices by bridging pyrazine molecules (pz = $C_4H_4N_2$). The anions provide charge balance as well as isolation between the layers. Single crystal measurements of susceptibility and magnetization, as well as muon spin relaxation studies, reveal low ratios of Néel temperatures to exchange strengths ($4.25 / 17.5 = 0.243$, $3.80/15.3=0.248$, and $3.05/10.8=0.282$, respectively) while the ratio of the anisotropy fields $H_A$ (kOe) to the saturation field $H_\mathrm{SAT}$ (kOe) are small ($2.6/490 = 5.3\times10^{-3}$, $2.4/430=5.5\times10^{-3}$, and $0.07/300=2.3\times10^{-4}$, respectively), demonstrating close approximations to a 2D Heisenberg model. The susceptibilities of ClO$_4$ and BF$_4$ show evidence of an exchange anisotropy crossover (Heisenberg to $XY$) at low temperatures; their ordering transitions are primarily driven by the $XY$ behavior with the ultimate 3D transition appearing parasitically. The PF$_6$ compound remains Heisenberg-like at all temperatures, with its transition to the Néel state due to the interlayer interactions. Effects of field-induced anisotropy have been observed.

Local magnetism and magnetoelectric effect in HoMnO3 studied with muon-spin relaxation

We present the results of muon-spin relaxation (muSR) measurements on the hexagonal manganite HoMnO3. Features in the temperature-dependent relaxation rate, lambda, correlate with the magnetic transitions at 76 K, 38 K and 34 K. The highest temperature transition, associated with the ordering of Mn3+ moments has the largest effect on lambda. The application of a static electric field of E=10^4 Vm^-1 below T=50 K causes a small reduction in lambda which is suggestive of coupling between ferroelectric and magnetic domain walls in the ordered state of the material.

What relaxes muon spins in molecular nanomagnets?

We address the cause of the unusual muon spin relaxation (muSR) results on molecular nanomagnets (MNMs). Through measurements on protonated and deuterated samples of the MNMs Cr7Mn (S=1) and Cr8 (S=0), we show that the muon spin for $S \neq 0$ MNMs is relaxed via dynamic fluctuations of the electronic spins. A freezing out of dynamic processes occurs on cooling and at low temperatures the muon spins are relaxed by the electronic spins which themselves are dephased by incoherent nuclear field fluctuations. We observe a transition to a state of static magnetic order of the MNM electronic spins in Cr7Mn below 2 K.

Muon-spin relaxation measurements on the dimerized spin-1/2 chains NaTiSi2O6 and TiOCl

We report muon spin relaxation (muSR) and magnetic susceptibility investigations of two Ti3+ chain compounds which each exhibit a spin gap at low temperature, NaTiSi2O6 and TiOCl. From these we conclude that the spin gap in NaTiSi2O6 is temperature independent, with a value of 2*Delta=660(50)K, arising from orbital ordering at Too = 210K; the associated structural fluctuations activate the muon spin relaxation rate up to temperatures above 270K. In TiOCl we find thermally activated spin fluctuations corresponding to a spin gap 2*Delta=420(40)K below Tc1=67K. We also compare the methods used to extract the spin gap and the concentration of free spins within the samples from muSR and magnetic susceptibility data.

Thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the layered triangular magnet NaNiO2

We report muon-spin rotation, heat capacity, magnetization, and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements of the layered spin-1/2 antiferromagnet NaNiO2. These show the onset of long-range magnetic order below T_N = 19.5K. Rapid muon depolarization persisting to about 5K above T_N is consistent with the presence of short-range magnetic order. The temperature and frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility suggests that magnetic clusters persist above 25K in the paramagnetic state and that their volume fraction decreases with increasing temperature. A frequency dependent peak in the ac magnetic susceptibility at T_sf = 3K is observed, consistent with a slowing of spin fluctuations at this temperature. A partial magnetic phase diagram is deduced.
