An enhancement of formation of unstable $^{8}$Be nucleus with the growth of $α$-particle multiplicity in fragmentation of relativistic nuclei

In this paper, the correlation between the formation of the unstable $^{8}$Be nucleus and accompanying $α$ particles in the fragmentation of relativistic $^{16}$O, $^{22}$Ne, $^{28}$Si, and $^{197}$Au nuclei in a nuclear track emulsion is investigated. The $^{8}$Be decays are identified in a wide energy range by invariant masses calculated from 2$α$-pair opening angles. The adopted approximations are verified by data on fragmentation of $^{16}$O nuclei in a hydrogen bubble chamber in a magnetic field. An increase in the $^{8}$Be contribution to the dissociation with the growth of $α$-particle multiplicity is found.

Enhanced production of $^{8}$Be nuclei in relativistic nuclei fragmentation

This article is dedicated to the results of early measuring fragmentation of relativistic $^{16}$O, $^{22}$Ne, $^{28}$Si, and $^{197}$Au nuclei in a nuclear track emulsion. It has been found that there is a contribution of the unstable $^8$Be nucleus decays to $α$-particle multiplicities. These renewed measurements of nuclear track emulsion exposed to $^{84}$Kr nuclei at the energy of 950 MeV per nucleon have been analyzed and given below.

The Hoyle State in Relativistic ${}^{12}$C Dissociation

Production of $α$-particle triples in the Hoyle state (HS) in dissociation of ${}^{12}$C nuclei at 3.65 and 0.42 $A$ GeV in nuclear track emulsion is revealed by the invariant mass approach. Contribution of the HS to the dissociation ${}^{12}$C $\to$ 3$α$ is (11 $\pm$ 3) \%. Reanalysis of data on coherent dissociation ${}^{16}$O $\to$ 4$α$ at 3.65 $A$ GeV is revealed the HS contribution of (22 $\pm$ 2) \%.

The Hoyle state in relativistic dissociation of light nuclei

In the context of the search for triples of relativistic $α$-particles in the Hoyle state, the analysis of available data on the dissociation of the nuclei ${}^{12}$C, ${}^{16}$O and ${}^{22}$Ne in the nuclear emulsion was carried out. The Hoyle state is identified by the invariant mass calculated from pair angles of expansion in $α$-triples in the approximation of the conservation of the momentum per nucleon of the parent nucleus. The contribution of the Hoyle state to the dissociation of ${}^{12}$C $\to$ 3$α$ is 11\%. In the case of the coherent dissociation of ${}^{16}$O $\to$ 4$α$ it reaches 22\% when the portion of the channel ${}^{16}$O $\to$ 2${}^{8}$Be is equal to 5\%.

Toward an automated analysis of slow ions in nuclear track emulsion

Application of the nuclear track emulsion technique (NTE) in radioactivity and nuclear fission studies is discussed. It is suggested to use a HSP-1000 automated microscope for searching for a collinear cluster tri-partition of heavy nuclei implanted in NTE. Calibrations of $α$-particles and ion ranges in a novel NTE are carried out. Surface exposures of NTE samples to a ${}^{252}$Cf source started. Planar events containing fragments and long-range $α$-particles as well as fragment triples only are studied. NTE samples are calibrated by ions Kr and Xe of energy of 1.2 and 3 A MeV.

Dissociation of C-10 Nuclei in a Track Nuclear Emulsion at an Energy of 1.2 GeV per Nucleon

The charge topology in the fragmentation of $^{10}$C nuclei in a track nuclear emulsion at an energy of 1.2 GeV per nucleon is studied. In the coherent dissociation of $^{10}$C nuclei, about 82% of events are associated with the channel $^{10}$C $\rightarrow$ 2$α+$ 2\emph{p}. The angular distributions and correlations of product fragments are presented for this channel. It is found that among $^{10}$C $\rightarrow$ 2$α+$ 2\emph{p} events, about 30% are associated with the process in which dissociation through the ground state of the unstable $^9$Be$_{g.s.}$ nucleus is followed by $^8$Be$_{g.s.} +$ \emph{p} decays.

Exposure of Nuclear Track Emulsion to He-8 Nuclei at the ACCULINNA Separator

Nuclear track emulsion is exposed to a beam of radioactive $^8$He nuclei with an energy of 60 MeV and enrichment of about 80% at the ACCULINNA separator. Measurements of 278 decays of the $^8$He nuclei stopped in the emulsion allow the potential of the $α$ spectrometry to be estimated and the thermal drift of $^8$He atoms in matter to be observed for the first time.

Irradiation of Nuclear Track Emulsions with Thermal Neutrons, Heavy Ions, and Muons

Exposures of test samples of nuclear track emulsion were analyzed. Angular and energy correlations of products originating from the thermal-neutron-induced reaction n$_{th} + ^{10}$B $\rightarrow ^{7}$Li $+ (γ) + α$ were studied in nuclear tack emulsions enriched in boron. Nuclear track emulsions were also irradiated with $^{86}$Kr$^{+17}$ and $^{132}$Xe$^{+26}$ of energy about 1.2 MeV per nucleon. Measurements of ranges of heavy ions in nuclear track emulsions made it possible to determine their energies on the basis of the SRIM model. The formation of high-multiplicity nuclear stars was observed upon irradiating nuclear track emulsions with ultrarelativistic muons. Kinematical features studied in this exposure of nuclear track emulsions for events of the muon-induced splitting of carbon nuclei to three alpha particles are indicative of the nuclear-diffraction interaction mechanism.

$^8$He nuclei stopped in nuclear track emulsion

The fragment separator ACCULINNA in the G. N. Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions of JINR was used to expose a nuclear track emulsion to a beam of radioactive $^{8}$He nuclei of energy of 60 MeV and enrichment of about 80%. Measurements of decays of $^{8}$He nuclei stopped in the emulsion allow one to evaluate possibilities of $α$-spectrometry and to observe a thermal drift of $^{8}$He atoms in matter. Knowledge of the energy and emission angles of $α$-particles allows one to derive the energy distribution of $α$-decays Q$_{2α}$. The presence of a "tail" of large values Q$_{2α}$ is established. The physical reason for the appearance of this "tail" in the distribution Q$_{2α}$ is not clear. Its shape could allow one to verify calculations of spatial structure of nucleon ensembles emerging as $α$-pairs of decays via the state $^8$Be$_{2+}$.

"Tomography" of the cluster structure of light nuclei via relativistic dissociation

These lecture notes present the capabilities of relativistic nuclear physics for the development of the physics of nuclear clusters. Nuclear track emulsion continues to be an effective technique for pilot studies that allows one, in particular, to study the cluster dissociation of a wide variety of light relativistic nuclei within a common approach. Despite the fact that the capabilities of the relativistic fragmentation for the study of nuclear clustering were recognized quite a long time ago, electronic experiments have not been able to come closer to an integrated analysis of ensembles of relativistic fragments. The continued pause in the investigation of the "fine" structure of relativistic fragmentation has led to resumption of regular exposures of nuclear emulsions in beams of light nuclei produced for the first time at the Nuclotron of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR, Dubna). To date, an analysis of the peripheral interactions of relativistic isotopes of beryllium, boron, carbon and nitrogen, including radioactive ones, with nuclei of the emulsion composition, has been performed, which allows the clustering pattern to be presented for a whole family of light nuclei.

Secondary nuclear fragment beams for investigations of relativistic fragmentation of light radioactive nuclei using nuclear photoemulsion at Nuclotron

Slowly extracted relativistic beams of light nuclei and a beam transportation line net system constitute a good base for secondary nuclear beams forming at the LHE accelerator facility. A recent years activity in the field at the Laboratory is connected with a project on study light nuclei structure by means the emulsion technique [1,2]. The paper shortly summarizes results of the work.

Clustering in relativistic dissociation of $^9$be, $^9$c, $^{10}$c and $^{12}$n nuclei

The dissociation features in nuclear track emulsion of $^9$Be, $^{9,10}$C, and $^{12}$N nuclei of 1.2 A GeV energy are presented. The data presented for the nucleus $^9$Be can be considered as evidence that there is a core in its structure in the form of 0$^+$ and 2$^+$ states of the $^8$Be nucleus having roughly equal weights. Events of coherent dissociation $^9$C$\rightarrow 3^3$He associated with the rearrangement of the nucleons outside the $α$-clustering are identified. A pattern of the charge fragment topology in the dissociation of $^{10}$C and $^{12}$N nuclei is obtained for the first time. Contribution of the unbound nucleus decays to the cascade process $^{10}$C$\rightarrow ^9$B$\rightarrow ^8$Be is identified.

Exposure of Nuclear Track Emulsion to a Mixed Beam of Relativistic $^{12}$N, $^{10}$C, and $^7$Be Nuclei

A nuclear track emulsion was exposed to a mixed beam of relativistic $^{12}$N, $^{10}$C, and $^7$Be nuclei having a momentum of 2 GeV/$c$ per nucleon. The beam was formed upon charge exchange processes involving $^{12}$C primary nuclei and their fragmentation. An analysis indicates that $^{10}$C nuclei are dominant in the beam and that $^{12}$N nuclei are present in it. The charge topology of relativistic fragments in the coherent dissociation of these nuclei is presented.

Study of Peripheral Collisions of 56fe at 1 a Gev/c in Nuclear Emulsion

We have investigated the interactions of 1 A GeV 56Fe in nuclear emulsion. We measured the charge and the angular distributions of single and multiple charged relativistic particles emitted from peripheral interactions. We investigate a possible new method of separating interactions of electromagnetic origin. We provide the values of several parameters evaluated in a sample selected using the classical method, and the method proposed in this paper.

Electromagnetic dissociation of relativistic $^8$B nuclei in nuclear track emulsion

Experimental data on fragmentation channels in peripheral interactions of $^8$B nuclei in nuclear track emulsions are presented. A detailed analysis made it possible to justify selections of events of the electromagnetic-dissociation process $^8$B $\to^7$Be + \emph{p} and to estimate its cross section. Events of $^{10}$C peripheral dissociation that were observed in the same exposure are described.

preprint2009arXiv

Fragmentation of relativistic nuclei in peripheral interactions in nuclear track emulsion

The technique of nuclear track emulsions is used to explore the fragmentation of light relativistic nuclei down to the most peripheral interactions - nuclear "white" stars. A complete pattern of therelativistic dissociation of a $^8$B nucleus with target fragment accompaniment is presented. Relativistic dissociation $^{9}$Be$\to2α$ is explored using significant statistics and a relative contribution of $^{8}$Be decays from 0$^+$ and 2$^+$ states is established. Target fragment accompaniments are shown for relativistic fragmentation $^{14}$N$\to$3He+H and $^{22}$Ne$\to$5He. The leading role of the electromagnetic dissociation on heavy nuclei with respect to break-ups on target protons is demonstrated in all these cases. It is possible to conclude that the peripheral dissociation of relativistic nuclei in nuclear track emulsion is a unique tool to study many-body systems composed of lightest nuclei and nucleons in the energy scale relevant for nuclear astrophysics.

preprint2006arXiv

Clustering in light nuclei in fragmentation above 1 A GeV

The relativistic invariant approach is applied to analyzing the 3.3 A GeV $^{22}$Ne fragmentation in a nuclear track emulsion. New results on few-body dissociations have been obtained from the emulsion exposures to 2.1 A GeV $^{14}$N and 1.2 A GeV $^{9}$Be nuclei. It can be asserted that the use of the invariant approach is an effective means of obtaining conclusions about the behavior of systems involving a few He nuclei at a relative energy close to 1 MeV per nucleon. The first observations of fragmentation of 1.2 A GeV $^{8}$B and $^{9}$C nuclei in emulsion are described. The presented results allow one to justify the development of few-body aspects of nuclear astrophysics.

Topology of "white" stars in relativistic fragmentation of light nuclei

In the present paper, experimental observations of the multifragmentation processes of light relativistic nuclei carried out by means of emulsions are reviewed. Events of the type of "white" stars in which the dissociation of relativistic nuclei is not accompanied by the production of mesons and the target-nucleus fragments are considered. A distinctive feature of the charge topology in the dissociation of the Ne, Mg, Si, and S nuclei is an almost total suppression of the binary splitting of nuclei to fragments with charges higher than 2. The growth of the nuclear fragmentation degree is revealed in an increase in the multiplicity of singly and doubly charged fragments with decreasing charge of the non-excited part of the fragmenting nucleus. The processes of dissociation of stable Li, Be, B, C, N, and O isotopes to charged fragments were used to study special features of the formation of systems consisting of the lightest $α$, d, and t nuclei. Clustering in form of the $^3$He nucleus can be detected in "white" stars via the dissociation of neutron-deficient Be, B, C, and N isotopes.

Rapidity distribution of jet quenching: effects on global observables

We discuss modification in the rapidity distribution of the transverse energy flow as a signal of medium-induced partonic energy loss in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. A scan of the global energy flow and jet rates in the wide rapidity region might provide the important information about the pseudo-rapidity size of a dense medium created in heavy ion collisions at the LHC.

Global Features of Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions in the Ultrarelativistic Domain

HIJING generator simulation of nucleus-nucleus collisions at ultrarelativistic energies are presented. Is shown, that the global characteristics of nucleus-nucleus collisions, such as of distribution of a charge multiplicity, total and electromagnetic transverse energy over pseudorapidity are rather sensitive to some predictions of formation models of high-exited nuclear medium, namely parton energy losses in dense nuclear matter. This losses results to appearance of a broad maximum in global variable distributions over pseudorapidity. The most profound of this effect occurs at central heavy ion collisions at LHC energy.

preprint2000arXiv

Manifestation of Jet Quenching in the Total Transverse Energy Distributions in the Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions

In the framework of the HIJING model global characteristics of nucleus- nucleus collisions are studied for a Large Hadron Collider energy scale. An interesting model prediction is the presence of a central bump over a pseudorapidity plateau of a total transverse energy distribution. The bump is induced by a jet quenching effect in a dense nuclear matter. It is shown that on a wide acceptance calorimeter with a pseudorapidity coverage -5 < η< 5 allow to obtain experimental confirmation of such an effect.
