The new APD-Based Readout of the Crystal Barrel Calorimeter -- An Overview

The Crystal Barrel is an electromagnetic calorimeter consisting of 1380 CsI(Tl) scintillators, and is currently installed at the CBELSA/TAPS experiment where it is used to detect decay products from photoproduction of mesons. The readout of the Crystal Barrel has been upgraded in order to integrate the detector into the first level of the trigger and to increase its sensitivity for neutral final states. The new readout uses avalanche photodiodes in the front-end and a dual back-end with branches optimized for energy and time measurement, respectively. An FPGA-based cluster finder processes the whole hit pattern within less than 100 ns. The important downside of APDs -- the temperature dependence of their gain -- is handled with a temperature stabilization and a compensating bias voltage supply. Additionally, a light pulser system allows the APDs' gains to be measured during beamtimes.

New data on γ⃗p⃗→ηp\vecγ \vec{p}\rightarrow ηp with polarized photons and protons and their implications for N∗→NηN^* \to Nη decays

The polarization observables T,E,P,HT, E, P, H, and GG in photoproduction of ηη mesons off protons are measured for photon energies from threshold to W=2400 W=2400\,MeV (TT), 2280 MeV (EE), 1620 MeV (P,HP, H), or 1820 MeV (GG), covering nearly the full solid angle. The data are compared to predictions from the SAID, MAID, JüBo, and BnGa partial-wave analyses. A refit within the BnGa approach including further data yields precise branching ratios for the NηNη decay of nucleon resonances. A NηNη-branching ratio of 0.33±0.040.33\pm 0.04 for N(1650)1/2−N(1650)1/2^- is found, which reduces the large and controversially discussed NηNη-branching ratio difference of the two lowest mass JP=1/2−J^P=1/2^--resonances significantly.

Determination of the real part of the η'-Nb optical potential

The excitation function and momentum distribution of η' mesons have been measured in photoproduction off 93^Nb in the energy range of 1.2-2.9 GeV. The experiment has been performed with the combined Crystal Barrel and MiniTAPS detector system, using tagged photon beams from the ELSA electron accelerator. Information on the sign and magnitude of the real part of the η'-Nb potential has been extracted from a comparison of the data with model calculations. An attractive potential of -(41 \pm 10(stat) \pm 15(syst)) MeV depth at normal nuclear matter density is deduced within model uncertainties. This value is consistent with the potential depth of -(37 \pm 10(stat) \pm 10(syst)) MeV obtained in an earlier measurement for a light nucleus (carbon). This relatively shallow η'-nucleus potential will make the search for η'-nucleus bound states more difficult.

Experimental constraints on the ωω-nucleus real potential

In a search for ωω mesic states, the production of ωω-mesons in coincidence with forward going protons has been studied in photon induced reactions on 12^{12}C for incident photon energies of 1250 - 3100 MeV. The π0γπ^0 γ pairs from decays of bound or quasi-free ωω-mesons have been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system in coincidence with protons registered in the MiniTAPS forward array. Structures in the total energy distribution of the π0γπ^0 γ pairs, which would indicate the population and decay of bound ω 11ω~^{11}B states, are not observed. The π0γπ^0 γ cross section of 0.3 nb/MeV/sr observed in the bound state energy regime between -100 and 0 MeV may be accounted for by yield leaking into the bound state regime because of the large in-medium width of the ωω-meson. A comparison of the measured total energy distribution with calculations suggests the real part V0V_0 of the ω 11ω~^{11}B potential to be small and only weakly attractive with V0(ρ=ρ0)=−15±V_0(ρ=ρ_0) = -15\pm 35(stat) ±\pm20(syst) MeV in contrast to some theoretical predictions of attractive potentials with a depth of 100 - 150 MeV.

Measurement of polarisation observables in Ks0Σ+K^0_sΣ^+ photoproduction off the proton

The reaction γ p→KS0 Σ+γ\, p \rightarrow K^0_S\,Σ^+ is studied in the photon energy range from threshold. Linearly polarised photon beams from coherent bremsstrahlung enabled the first measurement of photon beam asymmetries in this reaction up to Eγ=2250E_γ= 2250 MeV. In addition, the recoil hyperon polarisation was determined through the asymmetry in the weak decay Σ+→pπ0Σ^+ \rightarrow p π^0 up to Eγ=1650E_γ= 1650 MeV. The data are compared to partial wave analyses, and the possible impact on the interpretation of a recently observed cusp-like structure near the K∗K^* thresholds is discussed.

Determination of the η'-nucleus optical potential

The excitation function and momentum distribution of η′η^\prime mesons have been measured in photon induced reactions on 12^{12}{}C in the energy range of 1250-2600 MeV. The experiment was performed with tagged photon beams from the ELSA electron accelerator using the Crystal Barrel and TAPS detectors. The data are compared to model calculations to extract information on the sign and magnitude of the real part of the η′η^\prime-nucleus potential. Within the model, the comparison indicates an attractive potential of -(37±10(stat)±10(syst)37 \pm 10(stat)\pm10(syst)) MeV depth at normal nuclear matter density. Since the modulus of this depth is larger than the modulus of the imaginary part of the η′η^\prime-nucleus potential of -(10±2.510\pm2.5) MeV, determined by transparency ratio measurements, a search for resolved η′η^\prime-bound states appears promising.

Transparency ratio in γA -> η' A' and the in-medium η' width

The photoproduction of η'-mesons off different nuclei has been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system for incident photon energies between 1500 - 2200 MeV. The transparency ratio has been deduced and compared to theoretical calculations describing the propagation of η'-mesons in nuclei. The comparison indicates a width of the η' -meson of the order of Γ= 15-25 MeV at ρ=ρ_0 for an average momentum p_{η'} = 1050 MeV/c, at which the η'-meson is produced in the nuclear rest frame. The inelastic η' N cross section is estimated to be 3 - 10 mb. Parameterizing the photoproduction cross section of η'-mesons by σ(A) = σ_0 A^α, a value of α= 0.84\pm0.03 has been deduced.

Anomaly in the K^0_S Sigma^+ photoproduction cross section off the proton at the K* threshold

The γ+p→K0+Σ+γ+ p \rightarrow K^0 + Σ^+ photoproduction reaction is investigated in the energy region from threshold to Eγ=2250E_γ= 2250\,MeV. The differential cross section exhibits increasing forward-peaking with energy, but only up to the K∗K^* threshold. Beyond, it suddenly returns to a flat distribution with the forward cross section dropping by a factor of four. In the total cross section a pronounced structure is observed between the K∗ΛK^*Λ and K∗ΣK^*Σ thresholds. It is speculated whether this signals the turnover of the reaction mechanism from t-channel exchange below the K∗K^* production threshold to an s-channel mechanism associated with the formation of a dynamically generated K∗K^*-hyperon intermediate state.

Photoproduction of ωω mesons on nuclei near the production threshold

The photoproduction of ωω mesons on LH_2, C and Nb has been studied for incident photon energies from 900 to 1300 MeV using the CB/TAPS detector at ELSA. The ωω line shape does not show any significant difference between the LH_2 and the Nb targets. The data are compared with results of transport calculations that predict a sensitivity of the ωω line shape to in-medium modifications near the production threshold on a free nucleon of EγlabE_γ^{lab} = 1109 MeV.}

Photoproduction of Neutral Pions off Protons

Photoproduction of neutral pions has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector in the reaction γp→pπ0γp\to pπ^0 for photon energies between 0.85 and 2.50 GeV. The π0π^0 mesons are observed in their dominant neutral decay mode: π0→γγπ^0\toγγ. For the first time, the differential cross sections cover the very forward region, θc.m.<60∘θ_{\rm c.m.}<60^\circ. A partial-wave analysis of these data within the Bonn-Gatchina framework observes the high-mass resonances G17G_{17}(2190), D13D_{13}(2080), and D15D_{15}(2070).

Quasi-free photoproduction of eta-mesons off the deuteron

Precise data for quasi-free photoproduction of ηη mesons off the deuteron have been measured at the Bonn ELSA accelerator with the combined Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector for incident photon energies up to 2.5 GeV. The ηη-mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and neutrons. Possible nuclear effects like Fermi motion and re-scattering can be studied via a comparison of the quasi-free reaction off the bound proton to ηη-production off the free proton. No significant effects beyond the folding of the free cross section with the momentum distribution of the bound protons have been found. These Fermi motion effects can be removed by an analysis using the invariant mass of the ηη-nucleon pairs reconstructed from the final state four-momenta of the particles. The total cross section for quasi-free ηη-photoproduction off the neutron reveals even without correction for Fermi motion a pronounced bump-like structure around 1 GeV of incident photon energy, which is not observed for the proton. This structure is even narrower in the invariant mass spectrum of the ηη-neutron pairs. Position and width of the peak in the invariant mass spectrum are W≈1665W\approx 1665 MeV and FWHM Γ≈25Γ\approx 25 MeV. The data are compared to the results of different models.

In-medium ωω mass from the γ+Nb→π0γ+Xγ+ Nb \to π^{0}γ+ X reaction

Data on the photoproduction of ωω mesons on nuclei have been re-analyzed in a search for in-medium modifications. The data were taken with the Crystal Barrel(CB)/TAPS detector system at the ELSA accelerator facility in Bonn. First results from the analysis of the data set were published by D. Trnka et al. in Phys. Rev. Lett 94 (2005) 192303 \cite{david}, claiming a lowering of the ωω mass in the nuclear medium by 14% at normal nuclear matter density. The extracted ωω line shape was found to be sensitive to the background subtraction. For this reason a re-analysis of the same data set has been initiated and a new method has been developed to reduce the background and to determine the shape and absolute magnitude of the background directly from the data. Details of the re-analysis and of the background determination are described. The ωω signal on the NbNb target, extracted in the re-analysis, does not show a deviation from the corresponding line shape on a LH2LH_2 target, measured as reference. The earlier claim of an in-medium mass shift is thus not confirmed. The sensitivity of the ωω line shape to different in-medium modification scenarios is discussed.

Measurement of the Beam Asymmetry ΣΣ in the Forward Direction for pi0 Photoproduction

Photoproduction of neutral pions has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector for photon energies between 0.92 and 1.68~GeV at the electron accelerator ELSA. The beam asymmetry~ΣΣ has been extracted for 115∘<θc.m.<155∘115^\circ < θ_{\rm c.m.} < 155^\circ of the π0π^0~meson and for θc.m.<60∘θ_{\rm c.m.} < 60^\circ. The new beam asymmetry data improve the world database for photon energies above 1.5~GeV and, by covering the very forward region, extend previously published data for the same reaction by our collaboration. The angular dependence of ΣΣ shows overall good agreement with the SAID parameterization.

Photoproduction of ηη and η′η\prime Mesons off Protons

Total and differential cross sections for ηη and η′η^\prime photoproduction off the proton have been determined with the CBELSA/TAPS detector for photon energies between 0.85 and 2.55 GeV. The ηη mesons are detected in their two neutral decay modes, η→γγη\toγγ and η→3π0→6γη\to 3π^0\to 6γ, and for the first time, cover the full angular range in cosθcm\rm cos θ_{cm} of the ηη meson. These new ηη photoproduction data are consistent with the earlier CB-ELSA results. The η′η^\prime mesons are observed in their neutral decay to π0π0η→6γπ^0π^0η\to 6γ and also extend the coverage in angular range.
