Constraining the Stellar-to-Halo Mass Relation with Galaxy Clustering and Weak Lensing from DES Year 3 Data

We develop a framework to study the relation between the stellar mass of a galaxy and the total mass of its host dark matter halo using galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements. We model a wide range of scales, roughly from ∼100  kpc\sim 100 \; {\rm kpc} to ∼100  Mpc\sim 100 \; {\rm Mpc}, using a theoretical framework based on the Halo Occupation Distribution and data from Year 3 of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) dataset. The new advances of this work include: 1) the generation and validation of a new stellar mass-selected galaxy sample in the range of log⁡M⋆/M⊙∼9.6\log M_\star/M_\odot \sim 9.6 to ∼11.5\sim 11.5; 2) the joint-modeling framework of galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing that is able to describe our stellar mass-selected sample deep into the 1-halo regime; and 3) stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR) constraints from this dataset. In general, our SHMR constraints agree well with existing literature with various weak lensing measurements. We constrain the free parameters in the SHMR functional form log⁡M⋆(Mh)=log⁡(εM1)+f[log⁡(Mh/M1)]−f(0)\log M_\star (M_h) = \log(εM_1) + f\left[ \log\left( M_h / M_1 \right) \right] - f(0), with f(x)≡−log⁡(10αx+1)+δ[log⁡(1+exp⁡(x))]γ/[1+exp⁡(10−x)]f(x) \equiv -\log(10^{αx}+1) + δ[\log(1+\exp(x))]^γ/ [1+\exp(10^{-x})], to be log⁡M1=11.506−0.404+0.325\log M_1 = 11.506^{+0.325}_{-0.404}, log⁡ε=−1.632−0.181+0.306\log ε= -1.632^{+0.306}_{-0.181}, α=−1.638−0.099+0.108α= -1.638^{+0.108}_{-0.099}, γ=0.596−0.210+0.251γ= 0.596^{+0.251}_{-0.210} and δ=3.810−1.811+2.045δ= 3.810^{+2.045}_{-1.811}. The inferred average satellite fraction is within ∼5−35%\sim 5-35\% for our fiducial results and we do not see any clear trends with redshift or stellar mass. Furthermore, we find that the inferred average galaxy bias values follow the generally expected trends with stellar mass and redshift. Our study is the first SHMR in DES in this mass range, and we expect the stellar mass sample to be of general interest for other science cases.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 Results: Cosmological constraints from second and third-order shear statistics

We present a cosmological analysis of the third-order aperture mass statistic using Dark Energy Survey Year 3 (DES Y3) data. We perform a complete tomographic measurement of the three-point correlation function of the Y3 weak lensing shape catalog with the four fiducial source redshift bins. Building upon our companion methodology paper, we apply a pipeline that combines the two-point function ξ±ξ_{\pm} with the mass aperture skewness statistic ⟨Map3⟩\langle M_{\rm ap}^3\rangle, which is an efficient compression of the full shear three-point function. We use a suite of simulated shear maps to obtain a joint covariance matrix. By jointly analyzing ξ±ξ_\pm and ⟨Map3⟩\langle M_{\rm ap}^3\rangle measured from DES Y3 data with a ΛΛCDM model, we find S8=0.780±0.015S_8=0.780\pm0.015 and Ωm=0.266−0.040+0.039Ω_{\rm m}=0.266^{+0.039}_{-0.040}, yielding 111% of figure-of-merit improvement in ΩmΩ_m-S8S_8 plane relative to ξ±ξ_{\pm} alone, consistent with expectations from simulated likelihood analyses. With a wwCDM model, we find S8=0.749−0.026+0.027S_8=0.749^{+0.027}_{-0.026} and w0=−1.39±0.31w_0=-1.39\pm 0.31, which gives an improvement of 22%22\% on the joint S8S_8-w0w_0 constraint. Our results are consistent with w0=−1w_0=-1. Our new constraints are compared to CMB data from the Planck satellite, and we find that with the inclusion of ⟨Map3⟩\langle M_{\rm ap}^3\rangle the existing tension between the data sets is at the level of 2.3σ2.3σ. We show that the third-order statistic enables us to self-calibrate the mean photometric redshift uncertainty parameter of the highest redshift bin with little degradation in the figure of merit. Our results demonstrate the constraining power of higher-order lensing statistics and establish ⟨Map3⟩\langle M_{\rm ap}^3\rangle as a practical observable for joint analyses in current and future surveys.

A Probabilistic Autoencoder for Type Ia Supernovae Spectral Time Series

We construct a physically-parameterized probabilistic autoencoder (PAE) to learn the intrinsic diversity of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) from a sparse set of spectral time series. The PAE is a two-stage generative model, composed of an Auto-Encoder (AE) which is interpreted probabilistically after training using a Normalizing Flow (NF). We demonstrate that the PAE learns a low-dimensional latent space that captures the nonlinear range of features that exists within the population, and can accurately model the spectral evolution of SNe Ia across the full range of wavelength and observation times directly from the data. By introducing a correlation penalty term and multi-stage training setup alongside our physically-parameterized network we show that intrinsic and extrinsic modes of variability can be separated during training, removing the need for the additional models to perform magnitude standardization. We then use our PAE in a number of downstream tasks on SNe Ia for increasingly precise cosmological analyses, including automatic detection of SN outliers, the generation of samples consistent with the data distribution, and solving the inverse problem in the presence of noisy and incomplete data to constrain cosmological distance measurements. We find that the optimal number of intrinsic model parameters appears to be three, in line with previous studies, and show that we can standardize our test sample of SNe Ia with an RMS of 0.091±0.0100.091 \pm 0.010 mag, which corresponds to 0.074±0.0100.074 \pm 0.010 mag if peculiar velocity contributions are removed. Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: cosmology with moments of weak lensing mass maps

We present a cosmological analysis using the second and third moments of the weak lensing mass (convergence) maps from the first three years of data (Y3) data of the Dark Energy Survey (DES). The survey spans an effective area of 4139 square degrees and uses the images of over 100 million galaxies to reconstruct the convergence field. The second moment of the convergence as a function of smoothing scale contains information similar to standard shear 2-point statistics. The third moment, or the skewness, contains additional non-Gaussian information. The data is analysed in the context of the ΛΛCDM model, varying 5 cosmological parameters and 19 nuisance parameters modelling astrophysical and measurement systematics. Our modelling of the observables is completely analytical, and has been tested with simulations in our previous methodology study. We obtain a 1.7\% measurement of the amplitude of fluctuations parameter S8≡σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.5=0.784±0.013S_8\equiv σ_8 (Ω_m/0.3)^{0.5} = 0.784\pm 0.013. The measurements are shown to be internally consistent across redshift bins, angular scales, and between second and third moments. In particular, the measured third moment is consistent with the expectation of gravitational clustering under the ΛΛCDM model. The addition of the third moment improves the constraints on S8S_8 and ΩmΩ_{\rm m} by ∼\sim15\% and ∼\sim25\% compared to an analysis that only uses second moments. We compare our results with {\it Planck} constraints from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), finding a 2.22.2 \textendash 2.8σ2.8σ tension in the full parameter space, depending on the combination of moments considered. The third moment independently is in 2.8σ2.8σ tension with {\it Planck}, and thus provides a cross-check on analyses of 2-point correlations.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Cosmology with peaks using an emulator approach

We constrain the matter density ΩmΩ_{\mathrm{m}} and the amplitude of density fluctuations σ8σ_8 within the ΛΛCDM cosmological model with shear peak statistics and angular convergence power spectra using mass maps constructed from the first three years of data of the Dark Energy Survey (DES Y3). We use tomographic shear peak statistics, including cross-peaks: peak counts calculated on maps created by taking a harmonic space product of the convergence of two tomographic redshift bins. Our analysis follows a forward-modelling scheme to create a likelihood of these statistics using N-body simulations, using a Gaussian process emulator. We include the following lensing systematics: multiplicative shear bias, photometric redshift uncertainty, and galaxy intrinsic alignment. Stringent scale cuts are applied to avoid biases from unmodelled baryonic physics. We find that the additional non-Gaussian information leads to a tightening of the constraints on the structure growth parameter yielding S8 ≡ σ8Ωm/0.3 = 0.797−0.013+0.015S_8~\equiv~σ_8\sqrt{Ω_{\mathrm{m}}/0.3}~=~0.797_{-0.013}^{+0.015} (68% confidence limits), with a precision of 1.8%, an improvement of ~38% compared to the angular power spectra only case. The results obtained with the angular power spectra and peak counts are found to be in agreement with each other and no significant difference in S8S_8 is recorded. We find a mild tension of 1.5 σ1.5 \thinspace σ between our study and the results from Planck 2018, with our analysis yielding a lower S8S_8. Furthermore, we observe that the combination of angular power spectra and tomographic peak counts breaks the degeneracy between galaxy intrinsic alignment AIAA_{\mathrm{IA}} and S8S_8, improving cosmological constraints. We run a suite of tests concluding that our results are robust and consistent with the results from other studies using DES Y3 data.

The DES view of the Eridanus supervoid and the CMB Cold Spot

The Cold Spot is a puzzling large-scale feature in the Cosmic Microwave Background temperature maps and its origin has been subject to active debate. As an important foreground structure at low redshift, the Eridanus supervoid was recently detected, but it was subsequently determined that, assuming the standard ΛΛCDM model, only about 10-20%\% of the observed temperature depression can be accounted for via its Integrated Sachs-Wolfe imprint. However, R≳100 h−1MpcR\gtrsim100~h^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc} supervoids elsewhere in the sky have shown ISW imprints AISW≈5.2±1.6A_{\mathrm{ISW}}\approx5.2\pm1.6 times stronger than expected from ΛΛCDM (AISW=1A_{\mathrm{ISW}}=1), which warrants further inspection. Using the Year-3 redMaGiC catalogue of luminous red galaxies from the Dark Energy Survey, here we confirm the detection of the Eridanus supervoid as a significant under-density in the Cold Spot's direction at z<0.2z<0.2. We also show, with S/N≳5\mathrm{S/N}\gtrsim5 significance, that the Eridanus supervoid appears as the most prominent large-scale under-density in the dark matter mass maps that we reconstructed from DES Year-3 gravitational lensing data. While we report no significant anomalies, an interesting aspect is that the amplitude of the lensing signal from the Eridanus supervoid at the Cold Spot centre is about 30%30\% lower than expected from similar peaks found in N-body simulations based on the standard ΛΛCDM model with parameters Ωm=0.279Ω_{\rm m} = 0.279 and σ8=0.82σ_8 = 0.82. Overall, our results confirm the causal relation between these individually rare structures in the cosmic web and in the CMB, motivating more detailed future surveys in the Cold Spot region.
