Supersymmetric Quantum Spherical Spins with Short-Range Interactions

This work is dedicated to the study of a supersymmetric quantum spherical spin system with short-range interactions. We examine the critical properties both a zero and finite temperature. The model undergoes a quantum phase transition at zero temperature without breaking supersymmetry. At finite temperature the supersymmetry is broken and the system exhibits a thermal phase transition. We determine the critical dimensions and compute critical exponents. In particular, we find that the model is characterized by a dynamical critical exponent $z=2$. We also investigate properties of correlations in the one-dimensional lattice. Finally, we explore the connection with a nonrelativistic version of the supersymmetric $O(N)$ nonlinear sigma model and show that it is equivalent to the system of spherical spins in the large $N$ limit.

Competing interactions and the Lifshitz-type Nonlinear Sigma Model

We establish the equivalence between the continuum limit of the quantum spherical model with competing interactions, which is relevant to the investigation of Lifshitz points, and the O(N) nonlinear sigma model with the addition of higher order spatial derivative operators, which breaks the Lorentz symmetry and is known as Lifshitz-type (or anisotropic) nonlinear sigma model. In the context of the 1/N expansion, we also discuss the renormalization properties of this nonlinear sigma model and find the nontrivial fixed points of the beta-functions in various dimensions, which turn out to be connected with the existence of phase transitions in the quantum spherical model.

Stochastic Quantization of the Spherical Model and Supersymmetry

We use the stochastic quantization method to construct a supersymmetric version of the quantum spherical model. This is based on the equivalence between the Brownian motion described by a Langevin equation and the supersymmetric quantum mechanics, which is connected with the existence of the Nicolai map. We investigate the critical behavior of the supersymmetric model at finite as well as at zero temperatures, showing that it exhibits both classical and quantum phase transitions, and determine the critical dimensions.

Quantum spherical model with competing interactions

We analyze the phase diagram of a quantum mean spherical model in terms of the temperature $T$, a quantum parameter $g$, and the ratio $p=-J_{2}/J_{1}$, where $J_{1}>0$ refers to ferromagnetic interactions between first-neighbor sites along the $d$ directions of a hypercubic lattice, and $J_{2}<0$ is associated with competing antiferromagnetic interactions between second neighbors along $m\leq d$ directions. We regain a number of known results for the classical version of this model, including the topology of the critical line in the $g=0$ space, with a Lifshitz point at $p=1/4$, for $d>2$, and closed-form expressions for the decay of the pair correlations in one dimension. In the T=0 phase diagram, there is a critical border, $g_{c}=g_{c}(p) $ for $d\geq2$, with a singularity at the Lifshitz point if $d<(m+4)/2$. We also establish upper and lower critical dimensions, and analyze the quantum critical behavior in the neighborhood of $p=1/4$.
