On eigenvalue asymptotics for strong delta-interactions supported by surfaces with boundaries

Let $S\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ be a $C^4$-smooth relatively compact orientable surface with a sufficiently regular boundary. For $β\in\mathbb{R}_+$, let $E_j(β)$ denote the $j$th negative eigenvalue of the operator associated with the quadratic form \[ H^1(\mathbb{R}^3)\ni u\mapsto \iiint_{\mathbb{R}^3} |\nabla u|^2dx -β\iint_S |u|^2dσ, \] where $σ$ is the two-dimensional Hausdorff measure on $S$. We show that for each fixed $j$ one has the asymptotic expansion \[ E_j(β)=-\dfrac{β^2}{4}+μ^D_j+ o(1) \;\text{ as }\; β\to+\infty\,, \] where $μ_j^D$ is the $j$th eigenvalue of the operator $-Δ_S+K-M^2$ on $L^2(S)$, in which $K$ and $M$ are the Gauss and mean curvatures, respectively, and $-Δ_S$ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator with the Dirichlet condition at the boundary of $S$. If, in addition, the boundary of $S$ is $C^2$-smooth, then the remainder estimate can be improved to ${\mathcal O}(β^{-1}\logβ)$.

Tunneling resonances in systems without a classical trapping

In this paper we analyze a free quantum particle in a straight Dirichlet waveguide which has at its axis two Dirichlet barriers of lengths $\ell_\pm$ separated by a window of length 2a. It is known that if the barriers are semiinfinite, i.e. we have two adjacent waveguides coupled laterally through the boundary window, the system has for any a>0 a finite number of eigenvalues below the essential spectrum threshold. Here we demonstrate that for large but finite $\ell_\pm$ the system has resonances which converge to the said eigenvalues as $\ell_\pm\to\infty$, and derive the leading term in the corresponding asymptotic expansion.

Distant perturbation asymptotics in window-coupled waveguides. I. The non-threshold case

We consider a pair of adjacent quantum waveguides, in general of different widths, coupled laterally by a pair of windows in the common boundary, not necessarily of the same length, at a fixed distance. The Hamiltonian is the respective Dirichlet Laplacian. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of the discrete spectrum as the window distance tends to infinity for the generic case, i.e. for eigenvalues of the corresponding one-window problems separated from the threshold.

Eigenvalue asymptotics for the Schrödinger operator with a $δ$-interaction on a punctured surface

Given $n\geq 2$, we put $r=\min\{i\in\mathbb{N}; i>n/2 \}$. Let $Σ$ be acompact, $C^{r}$-smooth surface in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ which contains the origin. Let further $\{S_ε\}_{0\leε<η}$ be a family of measurable subsets of $Σ$ such that $\sup_{x\in S_ε}|x|= {\mathcal O}(ε)$ as $ε\to 0$. We derive an asymptotic expansion for the discrete spectrum of the Schr{ö}dinger operator $-Δ-βδ(\cdot-Σ\setminus S_ε)$ in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$, where $β$ is a positive constant, as $ε\to 0$. An analogous result is given also for geometrically induced bound states due to a $δ$ interaction supported by an infinite planar curve.

Product formula related to quantum Zeno dynamics

We prove a product formula which involves the unitary group generated by a semibounded self-adjoint operator and an orthogonal projection $P$ on a separable Hilbert space $\HH$, with the convergence in $L^2_\mathrm{loc}(\mathbb{R};\HH)$. It gives a partial answer to the question about existence of the limit which describes quantum Zeno dynamics in the subspace \hbox{$\mathrm{Ran} P$}. The convergence in $\HH$ is demonstrated in the case of a finite-dimensional $P$. The main result is illustrated in the example where the projection corresponds to a domain in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and the unitary group is the free Schrödinger evolution.

Strong-coupling asymptotic expansion for Schrödinger operators with a singular interaction supported by a curve in $\mathbb{R}^3$

We investigate a class of generalized Schrödinger operators in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^3)$ with a singular interaction supported by a smooth curve $Γ$. We find a strong-coupling asymptotic expansion of the discrete spectrum in case when $Γ$ is a loop or an infinite bent curve which is asymptotically straight. It is given in terms of an auxiliary one-dimensional Schrödinger operator with a potential determined by the curvature of $Γ$. In the same way we obtain an asymptotics of spectral bands for a periodic curve. In particular, the spectrum is shown to have open gaps in this case if $Γ$ is not a straight line and the singular interaction is strong enough.

Leaky quantum graphs: approximations by point interaction Hamiltonians

We prove an approximation result showing how operators of the type $-Δ-γδ(x-Γ)$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$, where $Γ$ is a graph, can be modeled in the strong resolvent sense by point-interaction Hamiltonians with an appropriate arrangement of the $δ$ potentials. The result is illustrated on finding the spectral properties in cases when $Γ$ is a ring or a star. Furthermore, we use this method to indicate that scattering on an infinite curve $Γ$ which is locally close to a loop shape or has multiple bends may exhibit resonances due to quantum tunneling or repeated reflections.

Magnetic layers with periodic point perturbations

We study spectral properties of a spinless quantum particle confined to an infinite planar layer with hard walls which interacts with a periodic lattice of point perturbations and a homogeneous magnetic field perpendicular to the layer. It is supposed that the lattice cell contains a finite number of impurities and the flux through the cell is rational. Using the Landau-Zak transformation, we convert the problem into investigation of the corresponding fiber operators which is performed by means of Krein's formula. This yields an explicit description of the spectral bands which may be absolutely continuous or degenerate, depending on the parameters of the model.

Spectra of soft ring graphs

We discuss of a ring-shaped soft quantum wire modeled by $δ$ interaction supported by the ring of a generally nonconstant coupling strength. We derive condition which determines the discrete spectrum of such systems, and analyze the dependence of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions on the coupling and ring geometry. In particular, we illustrate that a random component in the coupling leads to a localization. The discrete spectrum is investigated also in the situation when the ring is placed into a homogeneous magnetic field or threaded by an Aharonov-Bohm flux and the system exhibits persistent currents.

Topologically non-trivial quantum layers

Given a complete non-compact surface embedded in R^3, we consider the Dirichlet Laplacian in a layer of constant width about the surface. Using an intrinsic approach to the layer geometry, we generalise the spectral results of an original paper by Duclos et al. to the situation when the surface does not possess poles. This enables us to consider topologically more complicated layers and state new spectral results. In particular, we are interested in layers built over surfaces with handles or several cylindrically symmetric ends. We also discuss more general regions obtained by compact deformations of certain layers.

Geometric coupling thresholds in a two-dimensional strip

We consider the Laplacian in a strip $\mathbb{R}\times (0,d)$ with the boundary condition which is Dirichlet except at the segment of a length $2a$ of one of the boundaries where it is switched to Neumann. This operator is known to have a non-empty and simple discrete spectrum for any $a>0$. There is a sequence $0<a_1<a_2<...$ of critical values at which new eigenvalues emerge from the continuum when the Neumann window expands. We find the asymptotic behavior of these eigenvalues around the thresholds showing that the gap is in the leading order proportional to $(a-a_n)^2$ with an explicit coefficient expressed in terms of the corresponding threshold-energy resonance eigenfunction.

Bound states in weakly deformed strips and layers

We consider Dirichlet Laplacians on straight strips in R^2 or layers in R^3 with a weak local deformation. First we generalize a result of Bulla et al. to the three-dimensional situation showing that weakly coupled bound states exist if the volume change induced by the deformation is positive; we also derive the leading order of the weak-coupling asymptotics. With the knowledge of the eigenvalue analytic properties, we demonstrate then an alternative method which makes it possible to evaluate the next term in the asymptotic expansion for both the strips and layers. It gives, in particular, a criterion for the bound-state existence in the critical case when the added volume is zero.

Geometric phase related to point-interaction transport on a magnetic Lobachevsky plane

We consider a charged quantum particle living in the Lobachevsky plane and interacting with a homogeneous magnetic field perpendicular to the plane and a point interaction which is transported adiabatically along a closed loop C in the plane. We show that the bound-state eigenfunction acquires at that the Berry phase equal to 2πtimes the number of the flux quanta through the area encircled by C.

Point interactions in a strip

We study the behavior of a quantum particle confined to a hard--wall strip of a constant width in which there is a finite number $ N $ of point perturbations. Constructing the resolvent of the corresponding Hamiltonian by means of Krein's formula, we analyze its spectral and scattering properties. The bound state--problem is analogous to that of point interactions in the plane: since a two--dimensional point interaction is never repulsive, there are $ m $ discrete eigenvalues, $ 1\le m\le N $, the lowest of which is nondegenerate. On the other hand, due to the presence of the boundary the point interactions give rise to infinite series of resonances; if the coupling is weak they approach the thresholds of higher transverse modes. We derive also spectral and scattering properties for point perturbations in several related models: a cylindrical surface, both of a finite and infinite heigth, threaded by a magnetic flux, and a straight strip which supports a potential independent of the transverse coordinate. As for strips with an infinite number of point perturbations, we restrict ourselves to the situation when the latter are arranged periodically; we show that in distinction to the case of a point--perturbation array in the plane, the spectrum may exhibit any finite number of gaps. Finally, we study numerically conductance fluctuations in case of random point perturbations.
