Competing effects of Mn and Y doping on the low-energy excitations and phase diagram of La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$AsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ iron-based superconductors

Muon Spin Rotation ($μ$SR) and $^{19}$F Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements were performed to investigate the effect of Mn for Fe substitutions in La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$AsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ superconductors. While for $y = 0$ a very low critical concentration of Mn ($x = 0.2$%) is needed to quench superconductivity, as $y$ increases the negative chemical pressure introduced by Y for La substitution stabilizes superconductivity and for $y= 20$% it is suppressed at Mn contents an order of magnitude larger. A magnetic phase arises once superconductivity is suppressed both for $y$=0 and for $y= 20$%. Low-energy spin fluctuations give rise to a peak in $^{19}$F NMR $1/T_1$ with an onset well above the superconducting transition temperature and whose magnitude increases with $x$. Also the static magnetic correlations probed by $^{19}$F NMR linewidth measurements show a marked increase with Mn content. The disruption of superconductivity and the onset of the magnetic ground-state are discussed in the light of the proximity of LaFeAsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ to a quantum critical point.

Persistence of slow fluctuations in the overdoped regime of Ba(Fe1-xRhx)2As2 superconductors

We present nuclear magnetic resonance evidence that very slow ($\leq 1$ MHz) spin fluctuations persist into the overdoped regime of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ superconductors. Measurements of the $^{75}$As spin echo decay rate, obtained both with Hahn Echo and Carr Purcell Meiboom Gill pulse sequences, show that the slowing down of spin fluctuations can be described by short-range diffusive dynamics, likely involving domain walls motions separating $(π/a,0)$ from $(0,π/a)$ correlated regions. This slowing down of the fluctuations is weakly sensitive to the external magnetic field and, although fading away with doping, it extends deeply into the overdoped regime.

Role of magnetic dopants in the phase diagram of Sm1111 pnictides: The Mn case

The deliberate insertion of magnetic Mn dopants in the Fe sites of the optimally-doped SmFeAsO0.88-F0.12 iron-based superconductor can modify in a controlled way its electronic properties. The resulting phase diagram was investigated across a wide range of manganese contents (x) by means of muon-spin spectroscopy (muSR), both in zero- and in transverse fields, respectively, to probe the magnetic and the superconducting order. The pure superconducting phase (at x < 0.03) is replaced by a crossover region at intermediate Mn values (0.03 =< x < 0.08), where superconductivity coexists with static magnetic order. After completely suppressing superconductivity for x = 0.08, a further increase in Mn content reinforces the natural tendency towards antiferromagnetic correlations among the magnetic Mn ions. The sharp drop of Tc and the induced magnetic order in the presence of magnetic disorder/dopants, such as Mn, are both consistent with a recent theoretical model of unconventional superconductors [M. Gastiasoro et al., ArXiv 1606.09495], which includes correlation-enhanced RKKY-couplings between the impurity moments.

Superconductivity emerging from an electronic phase separation in the charge ordered phase of RbFe$_2$As$_2$

$^{75}$As, $^{87}$Rb and $^{85}$Rb nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and $^{87}$Rb nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in RbFe$_2$As$_2$ iron-based superconductor are presented. We observe a marked broadening of $^{75}$As NQR spectrum below $T_0\simeq 140$ K which is associated with the onset of a charge order in the FeAs planes. Below $T_0$ we observe a power-law decrease in $^{75}$As nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate down to $T^*\simeq 20$ K. Below that temperature the nuclei start to probe different dynamics owing to the different local electronic configurations induced by the charge order. A fraction of the nuclei probes spin dynamics associated with electrons approaching a localization while another fraction probes activated dynamics possibly associated with a pseudogap. These different trends are discussed in the light of an orbital selective behaviour expected for the electronic correlations.

ARPES sensitivity to short-range antiferromagnetic correlations

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is one of most powerful techniques to unravel the electronic properties of layered materials and in the last decades it has lead to a significant progress in the understanding of the band structures of cuprates, pnictides and other materials of current interest. On the other hand, its application to Mott-Hubbard insulating materials where a Fermi surface is absent has been more limited. Here we show that in these latter materials, where electron spins are localized, ARPES may provide significant information on the spin correlations which can be complementary to the one derived from neutron scattering experiments. Sr$_2$Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$O$_2$Cl$_2$, a prototype of diluted spin $S=1/2$ antiferromagnet (AF) on a square lattice, was chosen as a test case and a direct correspondence between the amplitude of the spectral weight beyond the AF zone boundary derived from ARPES and the spin correlation length $ξ$ estimated from $^{35}$Cl NMR established. It was found even for correlation lengths of a few lattice constants a significant spectral weight in the back-bended band is present which depends markedly on $ξ$. Moreover the temperature dependence of that spectral weight is found to scale with the $x$ dependent spin-stiffness. These findings prove that ARPES technique is very sensitive to short-range correlations and its relevance in the understanding of the electronic correlations in cuprates is discussed.

Enhancement of low-frequency fluctuations and superconductivity breakdown in Mn-doped La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$FeAsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ superconductors

$^{19}$F NMR measurements in optimally electron-doped La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$AsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ superconductors are presented. In these materials the effect of Mn doping on the superconducting phase is studied for two series of compounds ($y= 0$ and $y= 0.2$) where the chemical pressure is varied by substituting La with Y. In the $y=0.2$ series superconductivity is suppressed for Mn contents an order of magnitude larger than for the $y=0$ series. For both series a peak in the $^{19}$F NMR nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ emerges upon Mn doping and gets significantly enhanced on approaching the quantum phase transition between the superconducting and magnetic phases. $^{19}$F NMR linewidth measurements show that for similar Mn contents magnetic correlations are more pronounced in the $y=0$ series, at variance with what one would expect for $\vec Q=(π/a,0)$ spin correlations. These observations suggest that Mn doping tends to reduce fluctuations at $\vec Q=(π/a,0)$ and to enhance other low-frequency modes. The effect of this transfer of spectral weight on the superconducting pairing is discussed along with the charge localization induced by Mn.

Amorphous ferromagnetism and re-entrant magnetic glassiness in Sm$_{2}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{7}$: new insights into the electronic phase diagram of pyrochlore molybdates

We discuss the magnetic properties of a Sm$_{2}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{7}$ single crystal as investigated by means of different experimental techniques. In the literature, a conventional itinerant ferromagnetic state is reported for the Mo$^{4+}$ sublattice below $\sim 78$ K. However, our results of dc magnetometry, muon spin spectroscopy ($μ^{+}$SR) and high-harmonics magnetic ac susceptibility unambiguously evidence highly disordered conditions in this phase, in spite of the crystalline and chemical order. This disordered magnetic state shares several common features with amorphous ferromagnetic alloys. This scenario for Sm$_{2}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{7}$ is supported by the anomalously high values of the critical exponents, as mainly deduced by a scaling analysis of our dc magnetization data and confirmed by the other techniques. Moreover, $μ^{+}$SR detects a significant static magnetic disorder at the microscopic scale. At the same time, the critical divergence of the third-harmonic component of the ac magnetic susceptibility around $\sim 78$ K leads to additional evidence towards the glassy nature of this magnetic phase. Finally, the longitudinal relaxation of $μ^{+}$ spin polarization (also supported by results of ac susceptibility) evidences re-entrant glassy features similar to amorphous ferromagnets.

The poisoning effect of Mn in LaFe(1-x)Mn(x)AsO(0.89)F(0.11): unveiling a quantum critical point in the phase diagram of iron-based superconductors

A superconducting-to-magnetic transition is reported for LaFe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$AsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ where a per thousand amount of Mn impurities is dispersed. By employing local spectroscopic techniques like muon spin rotation (muSR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) on compounds with Mn contents ranging from x=0.025% to x=0.75%, we find that the electronic properties are extremely sensitive to the Mn impurities. In fact, a small amount of Mn as low as 0.2% suppresses superconductivity completely. Static magnetism, involving the FeAs planes, is observed to arise for x > 0.1% and becomes further enhanced upon increasing Mn substitution. Also a progressive increase of low energy spin fluctuations, leading to an enhancement of the NQR spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1, is observed upon Mn substitution. The analysis of 1/T1 for the sample closest to the the crossover between superconductivity and magnetism (x = 0.2%) points towards the presence of an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point around that doping level.

Vortex Lattice Melting of a NbSe2 single grain probed by Ultrasensitive Cantilever Magnetometry

Using dynamic cantilever magnetometry, we study the vortex lattice and its corresponding melting transition in a micrometer-size crystallite of superconducting NbSe2. Measurements of the cantilever resonance frequency as a function of magnetic field and temperature respond to the magnetization of the vortex-lattice. The cantilever dissipation depends on thermally activated vortex creep motion, whose pinning energy barrier is found to be in good agreement with transport measurements on bulk samples. This approach reveals the phase diagram of the crystallite, and is applicable to other micro- or nanometer-scale superconducting samples.

A view from inside iron-based superconductors

Muon spin spectroscopy is one of the most powerful tools to investigate the microscopic properties of superconductors. In this manuscript, an overview on some of the main achievements obtained by this technique in the iron-based superconductors (IBS) are presented. It is shown how the muons allow to probe the whole phase diagram of IBS, from the magnetic to the superconducting phase, and their sensitivity to unravel the modifications of the magnetic and the superconducting order parameters, as the phase diagram is spanned either by charge doping, by an external pressure or by introducing magnetic and non-magnetic impurities. Moreover, it is highlighted that the muons are unique probes for the study of the nanoscopic coexistence between magnetism and superconductivity taking place at the crossover between the two ground-states.

Charge doping versus disorder in CeFeAsO: do the in- and out-of-plane dilutions play the same role?

We provide direct experimental evidence for the identical effect of the in-plane Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$ and of the out-of-plane O$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ chemical dilutions on the itinerant spin-density-wave (SDW) magnetic phase in CeFeAsO. Remarkably, the suppression of SDW is not sensitive at all to the different kinds of disorder introduced in the two cases. Still, it is clearly shown that the sizeable in-plane disorder induced by the Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$ substitution is highly effective in suppressing $T_{\textrm{c}}$. Differently from what is observed in CeFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$, the ordered magnetic phase of the Ce sublattice is preserved throughout the whole phase diagram in CeFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$AsO ($x \leq 0.2$). An intriguing effect is encountered, whereby the magnetic coupling among Ce$^{3+}$ ions is enhanced by the superconducting phase.

Evidence of unconventional low-frequency dynamics in the normal phase of Ba(Fe1-xRhx)2As2 iron-based supercondutors

This work presents 75As NMR spin echo decay rate (1/T2) measurements in Ba(Fe1-xRhx)2As2 superconductors, for 0.041 < x < 0.094. It is shown that 1/T2 increases upon cooling, in the normal phase, suggesting the onset of an unconventional very low-frequency activated dynamic. The correlation times of the fluctuations and their energy barriers are derived. The motion is favored at large Rh content, while it is hindered by the application of a magnetic field perpendicular to the FeAs layers. The same dynamic is observed in the spin-lattice relaxation rate, in a quantitatively consistent manner. These results are discussed in the light of nematic fluctuations involving domain wall motion. The analogies with the behaviour observed in the cuprates are also outlined.

Glassy Transition in the Vortex Lattice of Ba(Fe0.93Rh0.07)2As2 superconductor, probed by NMR and ac-susceptibility

By using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and ac-susceptibility, the characteristic correlation times for the vortex dynamics, in an iron-based superconductor, have been derived. Upon cooling, the vortex dynamics displays a crossover consistent with a vortex glass transition. The correlation times, in the fast motions regime, merge onto a universal curve which is fit by the Vogel-Fulcher law, rather than by an Arrhenius law. Moreover, the pinning barrier shows a weak dependence on the magnetic field which can be heuristically justified within a fragile glass scenario. In addition, the glass freezing temperatures obtained by the two techniques merge onto the de Almeida-Thouless line. Finally the phase diagram for the mixed phase has been derived.

Progressive slowing down of spin fluctuations in underdoped LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$

The evolution of low-energy spin dynamics in the iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ was studied over a broad doping, temperature, and magnetic field range (x = 0 - 0.15, T up to 480K, H up to 30T) by means of As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). An enhanced spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature, 1/T1T, in underdoped superconducting samples (x = 0.045, 0.05 and 0.075) suggests the presence of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, which are strongly reduced in optimally-doped (x = 0.10) and completely absent in overdoped (x = 0.15) samples. In contrast to previous analysis, Curie-Weiss fits are shown to be insufficient to describe the data over the whole temperature range. Instead, a BPP-type model is used to describe the occurrence of a peak in 1/T1T clearly above the superconducting transition, reflecting a progressive slowing down of the spin fluctuations down to the superconducting phase transition.

The onset of magnetism peaked around x=1/4 in optimally electron-doped LnFe(1-x)Ru(x)AsO(1-y)F(y) (Ln = La, Nd or Sm) superconductors

The appearance of static magnetism, nanoscopically coexisting with superconductivity, is shown to be a general feature of optimally electron-doped LnFe(1-x)Ru(x)AsO(1-y)F(y) superconductor (Ln - lanthanide ion) upon isovalent substitution of Fe by Ru. The magnetic ordering temperature T_N and the magnitude of the internal field display a dome-like dependence on x, peaked around x=1/4, with higher T_N values for those materials characterized by a larger z cell coordinate of As. Remarkably, the latter are also those with the highest superconducting transition temperature (T_c) for x=0. The reduction of T_c(x) is found to be significant in the x region of the phase diagram where the static magnetism develops. Upon increasing the Ru content superconductivity eventually disappears, but only at x=0.6.

Common effect of chemical and external pressures on the magnetic properties of RECoPO (RE = La, Pr)

We report a detailed investigation of RECoPO (RE = La, Pr) and LaCoAsO materials performed by means of muon spin spectroscopy. Zero-field measurements show that the electrons localized on the Pr$^{3+}$ ions do not play any role in the static magnetic properties of the compounds. Magnetism at the local level is indeed fully dominated by the weakly-itinerant ferromagnetism from the Co sublattice only. The increase of the chemical pressure triggered by the different ionic radii of La$^{3+}$ and Pr$^{3+}$, on the other hand, plays a crucial role in enhancing the value of the magnetic critical temperature and can be mimicked by the application of external hydrostatic pressure up to 24 kbar. A sharp discontinuity in the local magnetic field at the muon site in LaCoPO at around 5 kbar suggests a sizeable modification in the band structure of the material upon increasing pressure. This scenario is qualitatively supported by \emph{ab-initio} density-functional theory calculations.

NMR investigation of vortex dynamics in Ba(Fe0.93Rh0.07)2As2 superconductor

75As NMR spin-lattice relaxation (1/T1) and spin-echo decay (1/T2) rate measurements were performed in a single crystal of Ba(Fe0.93Rh0.07)2As2 superconductor. Below the superconducting transition temperature Tc, when the magnetic field H is applied along the c axes, a peak in both relaxation rates is observed. Remarkably that peak is suppressed for H || ab. Those maxima in 1/T1 and 1/T2 have been ascribed to the flux lines lattice motions and the corresponding correlation times and pinning energy barriers have been derived on the basis of an heuristic model. Further information on the flux lines motion was derived from the narrowing of 75As NMR linewidth below Tc and found to be consistent with that obtained from 1/T2 measurements. All the experimental results are described in the framework of thermally activated vortices motions.

AC susceptibility investigation of vortex dynamics in nearly-optimally doped REFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ superconductors (RE = La, Ce, Sm)

Ac susceptibility and static magnetization measurements were performed in the nearly-optimally doped LaFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ and CeFeAsO$_{0.92}$F$_{0.08}$ superconductors, complementing earlier results on SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ [Phys. Rev. {\bf B 83}, 174514 (2011)]. The magnetic field -- temperature phase diagram of the mixed superconducting state is drawn for the three materials, displaying a sizeable reduction of the liquid phase upon increasing $T_{c}$ in the range of applied fields ($H \leq 5$ T). This result indicates that SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ is the most interesting compound among the investigated ones in view of possible applications. The field-dependence of the intra-grain depinning energy $U_{0}$ exhibits a common trend for all the samples with a typical crossover field value (2500 Oe $\lesssim H_{cr} \lesssim 5000$ Oe) separating regions where single and collective depinning processes are at work. Analysis of the data in terms of a simple two-fluid picture for slightly anisotropic materials allows to estimate the zero-temperature penetration depth $λ_{ab}(0)$ and the anisotropy parameter $γ$ for the three materials. Finally, a sizeable suppression of the superfluid density is deduced in a $s^{\pm}$ two-gap scenario.

Competing Interactions and Magnetic Frustration in Yb4LiGe4

We have studied polycrystalline Yb4LiGe4, a ternary variant of the R5T4 family of layered compounds characterized by a very strong coupling between the magnetic and crystallographic degrees of freedom. The system is mixed valent, with non-magnetic Yb2+ and magnetic Yb3+ present, and is characterized by coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations. We present measurements of resistivity, AC-susceptibility, specific heat, and muon spin relaxation (muSR), below 1 K. The low temperature measurements suggest a transition to a mesoscopically inhomogeneous magnetically ordered state below 2 K characterized by fluctuations well below the ordering temperature. This unusual state is believed to result from the enhanced two-dimensionality produced by Li substitution and frustration effects inherent in the Yb sub-lattice geometry.

Correlated trends of coexisting magnetism and superconductivity in optimally electron-doped oxy-pnictides

We report on the recovery of the short-range static magnetic order and on the concomitant degradation of the superconducting state in optimally F-doped SmFe_(1-x)Ru_(x)AsO_0.85F_0.15 for 0.1< x<0.6. The two reduced order parameters coexist within nanometer-size domains in the FeAs layers and finally disappear around a common critical threshold x_c=0.6. Superconductivity and magnetism are shown to be closely related to two distinct well-defined local electronic environments of the FeAs layers. The two transition temperatures, controlled by the isoelectronic and diamagnetic Ru substitution, scale with the volume fraction of the corresponding environments. This fact indicates that superconductivity is assisted by magnetic fluctuations, which are frozen whenever a short-range static order appears, and totally vanish above the magnetic dilution threshold x_c.

Evidence for impurity-induced frustration in La2CuO4

Zero-field muon spin rotation and magnetization measurements were performed in La2Cu{1-x}MxO4, for 0<x< 0.12, where Cu2+ is replaced either by M=Zn2+ or by M=Mg2+ spinless impurity. It is shown that while the doping dependence of the sublattice magnetization (M(x)) is nearly the same for both compounds, the Néel temperature (T_N(x)) decreases unambiguously more rapidly in the Zn-doped compound. This difference, not taken into account within a simple dilution model, is associated with the frustration induced by the Zn2+ impurity onto the Cu2+ antiferromagnetic lattice. In fact, from T_N(x) and M(x) the spin stiffness is derived and found to be reduced by Zn doping more significantly than expected within a dilution model. The effect of the structural modifications induced by doping on the exchange coupling is also discussed.

Long- to short-range magnetic order in fluorine-doped CeFeAsO

The evolution of the antiferromagnetic order parameter in CeFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} as a function of the fluorine content x was investigated primarily via zero-field muon-spin spectroscopy. The long-range magnetic order observed in the undoped compound gradually turns into a short-range order at x=0.04, seemingly accompanied/induced by a drastic reduction of the magnetic moment of the iron ions. Superconductivity appears upon a further increase in doping (x>0.04) when, unlike in the cuprates, the Fe magnetic moments become even weaker. The resulting phase diagram evidences the presence of a crossover region, where the superconducting and the magnetic order parameters coexist on a nanoscopic range.

Low-energy spin dynamics in the [YPc2]0 S=1/2 antiferromagnetic chain

1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in [YPc2]0, an organic compound formed by radicals stacking along chains, are presented. The temperature dependence of the macroscopic susceptibility, of the NMR shift and of the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 indicate that the unpaired electron spins are not delocalized but rather form a S=1/2 antiferromagnetic chain. The exchange couplings estimated from those measurements are all in quantitative agreement. The low-energy spin dynamics can be described in terms of diffusive processes and the temperature dependence of the corresponding diffusion constant suggests that a spin-gap around 1 K might be present in this compound.

Tuning of competing magnetic and superconducting phase volumes in LaFeAsO$_0.945F_0.055 by hydrostatic pressure

The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in LaFeAsO_0.945F_0.055 was studied as a function of hydrostatic pressure up to p~2.4GPa by means of muon-spin rotation (\muSR) and magnetization measurements. The application of pressure leads to a substantial decrease of the magnetic ordering temperature T_N and a reduction of the magnetic phase volume and, at the same time, to a strong increase of the superconducting transition temperature T_c and the diamagnetic susceptibility. From the volume sensitive \muSR measurements it can be concluded that the superconducting and the magnetic areas which coexist in the same sample are inclined towards spatial separation and compete for phase volume as a function of pressure.

Vortex dynamics and irreversibility line in optimally doped SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ from ac susceptibility and magnetization measurements

Ac susceptibility and static magnetization measurements were performed in the optimally doped SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ superconductor. The field - temperature phase diagram of the superconducting state was drawn and, in particular, the features of the flux line lattice derived. The dependence of the intra-grain depinning energy on the magnetic field intensity was derived in the thermally-activated flux creep framework, enlightening a typical 1/H dependence in the high-field regime. The intra-grain critical current density was extrapolated in the zero temperature and zero magnetic field limit, showing a remarkably high value $J_{c0}(0) \sim 2 \cdot 10^{7}$ A/cm$^{2}$, which demonstrates that this material is rather interesting for the potential future technological applications.

Coupling between 4f and itinerant electrons in SmFeAsO1-xFx (0.15 < x < 0.2) superconductors: an NMR study

$^{19}$F NMR measurements in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, for $0.15\leq x\leq 0.2$, are presented. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ increases upon cooling with a trend analogous to the one already observed in CeCu$_{5.2}$Au$_{0.8}$, a quasi two-dimensional heavy-fermion intermetallic compound with an antiferromagnetic ground-state. In particular, the behaviour of the relaxation rate either in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ or in CeCu$_{5.2}$Au$_{0.8}$ can be described in the framework of the self-consistent renormalization theory for weakly itinerant electron systems. Remarkably, no effect of the superconducting transition on $^{19}$F $1/T_1$ is detected, a phenomenon which can hardly be explained within a single band model.

Nanoscopic coexistence of magnetic and superconducting states within the FeAs layers of CeFeAsO1-xFx

We report on the coexistence of magnetic and superconducting states in CeFeAsO1-xFx for x=0.06(2), characterized by transition temperatures T_m=30 K and T_c=18 K, respectively. Zero and transverse field muon-spin relaxation measurements show that below 10 K the two phases coexist within a nanoscopic scale over a large volume fraction. This result clarifies the nature of the magnetic-to-superconducting transition in the CeFeAsO1-xFx phase diagram, by ruling out the presence of a quantum critical point which was suggested by earlier studies.

NMR and μSR study of spin correlations in SrZnVO(PO4)2 a S=1/2 frustrated magnet on a square lattice

31P nuclear and muon spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements in SrZnVO(PO4)2, a S=1/2 frustrated magnet on a square lattice, are presented. The temperature (T) dependence of the in-plane correlation length ξ(T) is derived and it is shown that the overall behaviour is analogous to the one found for non-frustrated systems but with a reduced spin stiffness. The temperature dependence of ξ(T) in SrZnVO(PO4)2 is compared to the one of other frustrated magnets on a square lattice with competing nearest neighbour (J1) and next-nearest neighbour (J2) exchange couplings and it is shown that ξ(T) progressively decreases as the ratio J2/J1 approaches the critical value leading to the suppression of long-range magnetic order. In spite of the differences in the functional form of ξ(T) found in different vanadates, it is pointed out that the characteristic energy scale describing spin correlations in all those compounds appears to scale as |2J2 + J1|.

Spin and charge dynamics in [TbPc$_2$]$^0$ and [DyPc$_2$]$^0$ single molecule magnets

Magnetization, AC susceptibility and $μ$SR measurements have been performed in neutral phthalocyaninato lanthanide ([LnPc$_2]^0$) single molecule magnets in order to determine the low-energy levels structure and to compare the low-frequency spin excitations probed by means of macroscopic techniques, such as AC susceptibility, with the ones explored by means of techniques of microscopic character, such as $μ$SR. Both techniques show a high temperature thermally activated regime for the spin dynamics and a low temperature tunneling one. While in the activated regime the correlation times for the spin fluctuations estimated by AC susceptibility and $μ$SR basically agree, clear discrepancies are found in the tunneling regime. In particular, $μ$SR probes a faster dynamics with respect to AC susceptibility. It is argued that the tunneling dynamics probed by $μ$SR involves fluctuations which do not yield a net change in the macroscopic magnetization probed by AC susceptibiliy. Finally resistivity measurements in [TbPc$_2]^0$ crystals show a high temperature nearly metallic behaviour and a low temperature activated behaviour.

Fluctuations and correlations in a frustrated S=1/2 square lattice with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions: a muSR study

Zero and longitudinal field $μ$SR measurements in Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$ and BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$, two prototypes of the frustrated $S=1/2$ square lattice model with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, are presented. Both systems are observed to undergo a phase transition to a long-range magnetic order at $T_N\simeq 3.46$ K, for Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$, and at $T_N\simeq 0.99$ K, for BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$. In Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$ both the temperature dependence of the order parameter and the longitudinal relaxation rate above $T_N$ are consistent with a two-dimensional XY model. On the other hand, for BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$, which lies very close to the magnetically disordered region of the phase diagram where a bond-nematic order was predicted, a peculiar logarithmic increase of the relaxation is observed above $T_N$. In both systems a rather broad distribution of internal fields at the muon sites is noticed below $T_N$. The origin of this distribution is discussed in the light of the $μ$SR experiments already performed on $S=1/2$ frustrated antiferromagnets on a square lattice.

Spin dynamics in rare earth single molecule magnets from muSR and NMR in [TbPc$_{2}$]$^{0}$ and [DyPc$_{2}$]$^{0}$

The spin dynamics in [TbPc$_{2}$]$^{0}$ and [DyPc$_{2}$]$^{0}$ single molecule magnets have been investigated by means of muon and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements. The correlation time for the spin fluctuations was found to be close to 0.1 ms already at 50 K, about two orders of magnitude larger than the one previously found in other lanthanide based single molecule magnets. In [TbPc$_{2}$]$^{0}$ two different regimes for the spin fluctuations have been evidenced: a high temperature activated one involving spin fluctuations across a barrier $Δ\simeq 880 K$ separating the ground and first excited states and a low temperature regime involving quantum fluctuations within the twofold degenerate ground-state. In [DyPc$_{2}$]$^{0}$ a high temperature activated spin dynamics is also evidenced which, however, cannot be explained in terms of a single spin-phonon coupling constant.

Dilution effects in Ho$_{2-x}$Y$_x$Sn$_2$O$_7$: from the Spin Ice to the single-ion magnet

A study of the modifications of the magnetic properties of Ho$_{2-x}$Y$_x$Sn$_2$O$_7$ upon varying the concentration of diamagnetic Y$^{3+}$ ions is presented. Magnetization and specific heat measurements show that the Spin Ice ground-state is only weakly affected by doping for $x\leq 0.3$, even if non-negligible changes in the crystal field at Ho$^{3+}$ occur. In this low doping range $μ$SR relaxation measurements evidence a modification in the low-temperature dynamics with respect to the one observed in the pure Spin Ice. For $x\to 2$, or at high temperature, the dynamics involve fluctuations among Ho$^{3+}$ crystal field levels which give rise to a characteristic peak in $^{119}$Sn nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate. In this doping limit also the changes in Ho$^{3+}$ magnetic moment suggest a variation of the crystal field parameters.

The temperature (T) dependence of the muon and $^{63}$Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates $1/T_1$ in YbCu4.4Au0.6 is reported over nearly four decades. It is shown that for $T\to 0$ $1/T_1$ diverges following the behaviour predicted by the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) theory developed by Moriya for a ferromagnetic quantum critical point. On the other hand, the static uniform susceptibility $χ_s$ is observed to diverge as $T^{-2/3}$ and $1/T_1T\propto χ_s^2$, a behaviour which is not accounted for by SCR theory. The application of a magnetic field $H$ is observed to induce a crossover to a Fermi liquid behaviour and for $T\to 0$ $1/T_1$ is found to obey the scaling law $1/T_1(H)= 1/T_1(0)[1+(μ_BH/k_BT)^2]^{-1}$.

Low-energy excitations in electron-doped metal phthalocyanine from NMR in Li$_{0.5}$MnPc

$^7$Li and $^1$H NMR and magnetization measurements in \lpc (Pc$\equiv$C$_{32}$H$_{16}$N$_8$), recently proposed as a strongly correlated metal, are presented. Two different low-frequency dynamics are evidenced. The first one, probed by $^1$H nuclei gives rise to a slowly relaxing magnetization at low temperature and is associated with the freezing of MnPc $S=3/2$ spins. This dynamic is similar to the one observed in pristine $β$-MnPc and originates from Li depleted chain segments. The second one, evidenced by $^7$Li spin-lattice relaxation rate, is associated with the hopping of the electrons along Li-rich chains. The characteristic correlation times for the two dynamics are derived and the role of disorder is briefly discussed.

Superconducting fluctuations and anomalous diamagnetism in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x from magnetization and 63Cu NMR-NQR relaxation measurements

Magnetization and 63Cu NMR-NQR relaxation measurements are used to study the superconducting fluctuations in YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO) oriented powders. In optimally doped YBCO the fluctuating negative magnetization M_{fl}(H,T) is rather well described by an anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (GL) functional and the curves M_{fl}/sqrt{H} cross at Tc. In underdoped YBCO, instead, over a wide temperature range an anomalous diamagnetism is observed, stronger than in the optimally doped compound by about an order of magnitude. The field and temperature dependences of M_{fl} cannot be described either by an anisotropic GL functional or on the basis of scaling arguments. The anomalous diamagnetism is more pronounced in samples with a defined order in the Cu(1)O chains. The 63Cu(2) relaxation rate shows little, if any, field dependence in the vicinity of the transition temperature Tc(H=0). It is argued how the results in the underdoped compounds can be accounted for by the presence of charge inhomogeneities, favoured by chains ordering.
