Conditional generation of optical Schrödinger cat states

Given a source of two coherent state superpositions with small separation in a traveling wave optical setting, we show that by interference and balanced homodyne measurement it is possible to conditionally prepare a symmetrically placed superposition of coherent states around the origo of the phase space. The separation of the coherent states in the superposition will be amplified during the process.

Double self-Kerr scheme for optical Schrödinger-cat state preparation

We propose a scheme to prepare optical Schrödinger-cat states in a traveling wave setting. Two states are similarly prepared via the self-Kerr effect and after mixing them, one mode is measured by homodyne detection. In the other mode a superposition of coherent states is conditionally prepared. The advantage of the scheme is that assuming a small Kerr effect one can prepare with high probability one from a set of Schrödinger-cat states. The measured value of the quadrature provides the information, which state from the set is actually prepared.

Construction of quantum states by special superpositions of coherent states

We consider the optimal approximation of certain quantum states of a harmonic oscillator with the superposition of a finite number of coherent states in phase space placed either on an ellipse or on a certain lattice. These scenarios are currently experimentally feasible. The parameters of the ellipse and the lattice and the coefficients of the constituent coherent states are optimized numerically, via a genetic algorithm, in order to obtain the best approximation. It is found that for certain quantum states the obtained approximation is better than the ones known from the literature thus far.

Theory of the conductance of interacting quantum wires with good contacts and applications to carbon nanotubes

Using bosonization we derive the dc conductance G(L,T) of an interacting quantum wire with good contacts including current relaxing backscattering and Umklapp processes. Our result yields the dependence of the conductance on length L and temperature T in the energy range where the Luttinger model is applicable. For a system where only a part of the current is protected by a conservation law we surprisingly find an unreduced ideal quantum conductance as for a fully ballistic wire. As a second application, we calculate the conductance of metallic single-wall carbon nanotubes in an energy range where backscattering due to phonons dominates. In contrast to previous studies we treat the electrons as interacting by using the Luttinger liquid formulation. The obtained results for the scaling of the dc conductance with temperature and length are compared with experimental data and yield a better description than the previously used non-interacting theory. Possible reasons for the remaining discrepancies in the temperature dependence between theory and experiment are discussed.
