Quantum calibrated magnetic force microscopy

We report the quantum calibration of a magnetic force microscope (MFM) by measuring the two-dimensional magnetic stray field distribution of the MFM tip using a single nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in diamond. From the measured stray field distribution and the mechanical properties of the cantilever a calibration function is derived allowing to convert MFM images to quantum calibrated stray field maps. This novel approach overcomes limitations of prior MFM calibration schemes and allows quantum calibrated nanoscale stray field measurements in a field range inaccessible to scanning NV magnetometry. Quantum calibrated measurements of a stray field reference sample allow its use as a transfer standard, opening the road towards fast and easily accessible quantum traceable calibrations of virtually any MFM.

Tuning Magnetic Properties Polycrystalline of PtCo Alloys Films with Pt

We experimentally investigated disordered PtxCo1-x (here x: 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6) alloy thin films magnetic properties which depended on Pt content. The magnetic properties of PtCo films were described with two effects, one of them is the hybridization between Co 3d and Pt 5d energy levels and it causes Pt magnetic polarization. The second one is the high spin orbit coupling constant of Pt which increases the ratio of magnetic orbital moment to spin moment. We investigated magnetic properties considering these effects by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) techniques.

Temperature-dependent exchange bias properties of polycrystalline PtxCo1-x/CoO bilayers

Temperature and PtCo composition dependence of exchange bias in PtxCo1-x/CoO bilayers is investigated. It is observed that exchange bias properties, blocking temperature and magnetic anisotropy of the PtxCo1-x/CoO thin films are strongly affected by the concentration of Pt at the common interface. A detailed structural analysis of antiferromagnetic CoO has been done by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS data revealed that CoO layer grows with non-stoichiometric behavior which results in other cobalt oxide phases and thus lowers blocking temperature for the exchange biased systems. Increase of Pt concentration in PtCo layer strengths the exchange bias and thus decreases training of the system. It also results in enhancement of growth-induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and onset of exchange bias at higher temperatures. The role of Pt concentration on the interfacial interactions between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers, and the effect of superstoichiometric CoO on blocking temperature are also discussed.
