Factorization of the Quantum Fractional Oscillator

The applicability of the factorization method is extended to the case of quantum fractional-differential Hamiltonians. In contrast with the conventional factorization, it is shown that the `factorization energy' is now a fractional-differential operator rather than a constant. As a first example, the energies and wave-functions of a fractional version of the quantum oscillator are determined. Interestingly, the energy eigenvalues are expressed as power-laws of the momentum in terms of the non-integer differential order of the eigenvalue equation.

Interaction-Free Measurements of Optical Semitransparent Objects

We substitute the fully absorbing obstacle in the Elitzur-Vaidman experiment by a semitransparent object and show that the probabilities of detection can be manipulated in dependence of the transparency of such an object. Then, we connect our results with the delayed choice experiment proposed by Wheeler. It is found that the transparency of the obstacle determines either a particle-like or a wave-like behaviour of a test photon.

On the geometry of spatial biphoton correlation in spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Analytical expressions are derived for the distribution rates of spatial coincidences in the counting of photons produced by spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC). Gaussian profiles are assumed for the wave function of the idler and signal light created in type-I SPDC. The distribution rates describe ellipses on the detection planes that are oriented at different angles according to the photon coincidences in either horizontal-horizontal, vertical-vertical, horizontal-vertical or vertical-horizontal position variables. The predictions are in agreement with the experimental data obtained with a type-I BBO crystal that is illuminated by a 100 mW violet pump laser as well as with the results obtained from the geometry defined by the phase-matching conditions.

Optimized Binomial Quantum States of Complex Oscillators with Real Spectrum

Classical and nonclassical states of quantum complex oscillators with real spectrum are presented. Such states are bi-orthonormal superpositions of $n+1$ energy eigenvectors of the system with binomial-like coefficients. For large values of $n$ these optimized binomial states behave as photon added coherent states when the imaginary part of the potential is cancelled.

SU(1,1) and SU(2) Approaches to the Radial Oscillator: Generalized Coherent States and Squeezing of Variances

It is shown that each one of the Lie algebras su(1,1) and su(2) determine the spectrum of the radial oscillator. States that share the same orbital angular momentum are used to construct the representation spaces of the non-compact Lie group SU(1,1). In addition, three different forms of obtaining the representation spaces of the compact Lie group SU(2) are introduced, they are based on the accidental degeneracies associated with the spherical symmetry of the system as well as on the selection rules that govern the transitions between different energy levels. In all cases the corresponding generalized coherent states are constructed and the conditions to squeeze the involved quadratures are analyzed.

Time-evolution of quantum systems via a complex nonlinear Riccati equation II. Dissipative systems

In our former contribution [Ann. Phys. 360 (2015) 44], we have shown the sensitivity to the choice of initial conditions in the evolution of Gaussian wave packets via the nonlinear Riccati equation. The formalism developed in the previous work is extended to effective approaches for the description of dissipative quantum systems. By means of simple examples we show the effects of the environment on the quantum uncertainties, correlation function, quantum energy contribution and tunneling currents. We prove that the environmental parameter $γ$ is strongly related with the sensitivity to the choice of initial conditions.

Leaky modes of waveguides as a classical optics analogy of quantum resonances

A classical optics waveguide structure is proposed to simulate resonances of short range one-dimensional potentials in quantum mechanics. The analogy is based on the well known resemblance between the guided and radiation modes of a waveguide with the bound and scattering states of a quantum well. As resonances are scattering states that spend some time in the zone of influence of the scatterer, we associate them with the leaky modes of a waveguide, the latter characterized by suffering attenuation in the direction of propagation but increasing exponentially in the transverse directions. The resemblance is complete since resonances (leaky modes) can be interpreted as bound states (guided modes) with definite lifetime (longitudinal shift). As an immediate application we calculate the leaky modes (resonances) associated with a dielectric homogeneous slab (square well potential) and show that these modes are attenuated as they propagate.

New supersymmetry-generated complex potentials with real spectra

A new form to construct complex superpotentials that produce real energy spectra in supersymmetric quantum mechanics is presented. This is based on the relation between the nonlinear Ermakov equation and a second order differential equation of the Schroedinger type. The superpotentials so constructed are characterized by the Ermakov parameters in such a way that they are always complex-valued and lead to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with real spectra, whose eigenfunctions form a bi-orthogonal system. As applications we present new complex supersymmetric partners of the free particle that are PT-symmetric and can be either periodic or regular (of the Poeschl-Teller form). A new family of complex oscillators with real frequencies that have the energies of the harmonic oscillator plus an additional real eigenvalue is introduced.

Time-evolution of quantum systems via a complex nonlinear Riccati equation. I. Conservative systems with time-independent Hamiltonian

The sensitivity of the evolution of quantum uncertainties to the choice of the initial conditions is shown via a complex nonlinear Riccati equation leading to a reformulation of quantum dynamics. This sensitivity is demonstrated for systems with exact analytic solutions with the form of Gaussian wave packets. In particular, one-dimensional conservative systems with at most quadratic Hamiltonians are studied.

Dynamical Equations, Invariants and Spectrum Generating Algebras of Mechanical Systems with Position-Dependent Mass

We analyze the dynamical equations obeyed by a classical system with position-dependent mass. It is shown that there is a non-conservative force quadratic in the velocity associated to the variable mass. We construct the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian for this system and find the modifications required in the Euler-Lagrange and Hamilton's equations to reproduce the appropriate Newton's dynamical law. Since the Hamiltonian is not time invariant, we get a constant of motion suited to write the dynamical equations in the form of the Hamilton's ones. The time-dependent first integrals of motion are then obtained from the factorization of such a constant. A canonical transformation is found to map the variable mass equations to those of a constant mass. As particular cases, we recover some recent results for which the dependence of the mass on the position was already unnoticed, and find new solvable potentials of the Pöschl-Teller form which seem to be new. The latter are associated to either the su(1,1) or the su(2) Lie algebras depending on the sign of the Hamiltonian.

Kronecker product in terms of Hubbard operators and the Clebsch-Gordan decomposition of SU(2)xSU(2)

We review the properties of the Kronecker (direct, or tensor) product of square matrices $A \otimes B \otimes C \cdots$ in terms of Hubbard operators. In its simplest form, a Hubbard operator $X_n^{i,j}$ can be expressed as the $n$-square matrix which has entry 1 in position $(i,j)$ and zero in all other entries. The algebra and group properties of the observables that define a multipartite quantum system are notably straightforward in such a framework. In particular, we use the Kronecker product in Hubbard notation to get the Clebsch-Gordan decomposition of the product group $SU(2) \times SU(2)$. Finally, the $n$-dimensional irreducible representations so obtained are used to derive closed forms of the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients that rule the addition of angular momenta. Our results can be further developed in many different directions.

Generalized coherent states for time-dependent and nonlinear Hamiltonians via complex Riccati equations

Based on the Gaussian wave packet solution for the harmonic oscillator and the corresponding creation and annihilation operators, a generalization is presented that also applies for wave packets with time-dependent width as they occur for systems with different initial conditions, time-dependent frequency or in contact with a dissipative environment. In all these cases the corresponding coherent states, position and momentum uncertainties and quantum mechanical energy contributions can be obtained in the same form if the creation and annihilation operators are expressed in terms of a complex variable that fulfills a nonlinear Riccati equation which determines the time-evolution of the wave packet width. The solutions of this Riccati equation depend on the physical system under consideration and on the (complex) initial conditions and have close formal similarities with general superpotentials leading to isospectral potentials in supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The definition of the generalized creation and annihilation operator is also in agreement with a factorization of the operator corresponding to the Ermakov invariant that exists in all cases considered.

Negative time delay for wave reflection from a one-dimensional semi-harmonic well

It is reported that the phase time of particles which are reflected by a one-dimensional semi-harmonic well includes a time delay term which is negative for definite intervals of the incoming energy. In this interval, the absolute value of the negative time delay becomes larger as the incident energy becomes smaller. The model is a rectangular well with zero potential energy at its right and a harmonic-like interaction at its left.

Extended WKB method, resonances and supersymmetric radial barriers

Semiclassical approximations are implemented in the calculation of position and width of low energy resonances for radial barriers. The numerical integrations are delimited by t/T<<8, with t the period of a classical particle in the barrier trap and T the resonance lifetime. These energies are used in the construction of `haired' short range potentials as the supersymmetric partners of a given radial barrier. The new potentials could be useful in the study of the transient phenomena which give rise to the Moshinsky's diffraction in time.

Rectangular Potentials in a Semi-Harmonic Background: Spectrum, Resonances and Dwell Time

We study the energy properties of a particle in one dimensional semi-harmonic rectangular wells and barriers. The integration of energies is obtained by solving a simple transcendental equation. Scattering states are shown to include cases in which the impinging particle is 'captured' by the semi-harmonic rectangular potentials. The 'time of capture' is connected with the dwell time of the scattered wave. Using the particle absorption method, it is shown that the dwell time $τ^a_D$ coincides with the phase time $τ_W$ of Eisenbud and Wigner, calculated as the energy derivative of the reflected wave phase shift. Analytical expressions are derived for the phase time $τ_W$ of the semi-harmonic delta well and barrier potentials.

Non-Hermitian SUSY Hydrogen-like Hamiltonians with real spectra

It is shown that the radial part of the Hydrogen Hamiltonian factorizes as the product of two not mutually adjoint first order differential operators plus a complex constant epsilon. The 1-susy approach is used to construct non-hermitian Hamiltonians with hydrogen spectra. Other non-hermitian Hamiltonians are shown to admit an extra `complex energy' at epsilon. New self-adjoint hydrogen-like Hamiltonians are also derived by using a 2-susy transformation with complex conjugate pairs epsilon, (c.c) epsilon.
