Scalar resonances in the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon $(g-2)$

We evaluate the contribution of scalar mesons to the hadronic light-by-light piece of the muon anomalous magnetic moment, using a warped five-dimensional model and holographic methods. We assess the contribution of the lightest, sub-GeV scalars $σ(500)$, $a_0(980)$ and $f_0(980)$ together with their associated towers of excited states, which the model generates automatically. Our results point at a clearly negative contribution, overwhelmingly dominated by the $σ(500)$ meson, that we estimate at $a_μ^{\rm{HLbL,S}}=-9(2)\cdot 10^{-11}$. This number is in very good agreement with the most recent determinations from dispersive analyses.

Effective Theory Approach to New Physics with Flavour: General Framework and a Leptoquark Example

Extending the Standard Model with higher-dimensional operators in an effective-field-theory (EFT) approach provides a systematic framework to study new-physics (NP) effects from a bottom-up perspective, as long as the NP scale is sufficiently large compared to the energies probed in the experimental observables. However, when taking into account the different quark and lepton flavours, the number of free parameters increases dramatically, which makes generic studies of the NP flavour structure infeasible. In this paper, we address this issue in view of the recently observed "flavour anomalies" in $B$-meson decays, which we take as a motivation to develop a general framework that allows us to systematically reduce the number of flavour parameters in the EFT. This framework can be easily used in global fits to flavour observables at Belle II and LHCb as well as in analyses of flavour-dependent collider signatures at the LHC. Our formalism represents an extension of the well-known minimal-flavour-violation approach, and uses Froggatt-Nielsen charges to define the flavour power-counting. As a relevant illustration of the formalism, we apply it to the flavour structures which could be induced by a $U_1$ vector leptoquark, which represents one of the possible explanations for the recent hints of flavour non-universality in semileptonic $B$-decays. We study the phenomenological viability of this specific framework performing a fit to low-energy flavour observables.

Dark matter decays from non-minimal coupling to gravity

We consider the Standard Model extended with a dark matter particle in curved spacetime, motivated by the fact that the only current evidence for dark matter is through its gravitational interactions, and we investigate the impact on the dark matter stability of terms in the Lagrangian linear in the dark matter field and proportional to the Ricci scalar. We show that this "gravity portal" induces decay even if the dark matter particle only has gravitational interactions, and that the decay branching ratios into Standard Model particles only depend on one free parameter: the dark matter mass. We study in detail the case of a singlet scalar as dark matter candidate, which is assumed to be absolutely stable in flat spacetime due to a discrete $Z_2$ symmetry, but which may decay in curved spacetimes due to a $Z_2$-breaking non-minimal coupling to gravity. We calculate the dark matter decay widths and we set conservative limits on the non-minimal coupling parameter from experiments. The limits are very stringent and suggest that there must exist an additional mechanism protecting the singlet scalar from decaying via this gravity portal.

Signatures of a nonstandard Higgs from flavor physics

We examine the constraints coming from incorporating the full Standard Model gauge symmetry into the effective field theory description of flavor processes, using semileptonic decays as paradigmatic examples. Depending on the dynamics triggering electroweak symmetry breaking, different patterns of correlations between the Wilson coefficients arise. Interestingly, this implies that flavor experiments are capable of shedding light upon the nature of the Higgs boson without actually requiring Higgs final states. Furthermore, the observed correlations can simplify model-independent analyses of these decays.

On the Extraction of the Strong Coupling from Hadronic Tau Decay

The finite energy sum rule extraction of the strong coupling α_s from hadronic τ decay data provides one of its most precise experimental determinations. As precision improves, small non-perturbative effects become increasingly relevant to both the central value and error. Here we present a new framework for this extraction employing a physically motivated model to accommodate violations of quark-hadron duality and enforcing a consistent treatment of higher-dimension operator product expansion contributions. Using 1998 OPAL data for the non-strange vector and axial-vector spectral functions, we find the n_f=3 values for α_s(m_τ^2) of 0.307(19) for fixed-order perturbation theory and 0.322(26) for contour-improved perturbation theory, corresponding to n_f=5 values for α_s(M_Z^2) of 0.1169(25) and 0.1187(32), respectively.
